Welcome to Harbor House, a family-designed and built timber-framed, 18th century reproduction, gambrel roof home on mid-coast Maine’s St. George peninsula. Harbor House is delightfully sited on two-and-a-half acres of ocean front property with private dock facing a secluded harbor, several islands, and the open waters of the Atlantic. It is located on a private road away from the bustle of summer traffic, yet only two miles from the Port Clyde working waterfront and Monhegan ferry, and three miles from the restaurants, library, bakery, public tennis courts, and yachting fleet of Tenants Harbor. Drift Inn Beach, a public beach great for swimming, and Marshall Point Lighthouse are also close at hand. Let’s start out on Harbor House’s broad south-facing deck with its glorious ocean views, perfect for lingering over your morning cup of coffee, watching windjammers coast along on the southwesterly breeze, taking an afternoon nap on the hammock, grilling today’s catch for dinner on the gas grill, or star gazing after dark, with the Milky Way so close you feel you can almost touch it. On the deck you are literally surrounded by nature’s bounty, sharing the bracing sea air with the ospreys busily tending to their young on Grandfather’s Island, great blue herons wading in the harbor at low tide, and kingfishers perched on the dock waiting for you to snap a photo. Out on the dock linger over the views of the surf breaking on rocky ledges, intriguing tide pools, and the scent of beach roses and raspberries. Don’t be at all surprised to come face-to-face with an inquisitive seal or to hear the soaring cry of loons at the mouth of the harbor. Moving into Harbor House, you pass through a cheery sun room with tile flooring, ready to receive the treasures you picked up from your seaside stroll or your sandy shoes and beach toys. Through the glass doors now you are in the living room with its pleasant mix of contemporary and antique furniture, and fireplace (firewood included) if the nights get chilly. Your eye is drawn to the exposed post and beam framing of hand-finished red and white oak cut from trees in Amherst, Massachusetts. The construction technique used is mortise and tenon joinery with oak pegs locking the frame in place. Notice, too, decorative details such as chamfering of the primary beams with lambs tongue stops and extensive raised panels used as wainscoting, all harkening back to New England’s architectural past. To your left is a complete modern kitchen with two refrigerators and stocked with all the utensils you’ll need to prepare simple or lavish meals, and dining area that can comfortably accommodate ten. On the main level you will also find the cozy library, with a collection of books about Maine and the sea, thrillers and classics, and a second working fireplace as well as cable TV. For those needing to stay in touch with the outside world, please note that Internet wifi has recently been installed at Harbor House, so by all means bring your laptops! Overflow guests can sleep in the library on a comfortable queen inflatable bed provided for that purpose. You will also find a half bath on this level, and an outside shower open to the sky that is great to start your day with a shower as the sun filters through the leaves of nearby birches, or to wash off sand and salt at day’s end.

Harbor Cottage is a deeply comfortable, architect-renovated seaside home furnished with sensitivity to its idyllic location on the shore of a serene bay. Just a short walk across the lawn is an architect-designed, two-bedroomed guest house. The property is always let as one property. Most of our guests staying at Harbor Cottage make use of the guest house for additional accommodation and others, including artists and writers, use it as a quiet place to work on projects. Built-in day-beds in both houses provide quiet places to read, work and nap. Each house has a wood-burning stove for the Fall and winter months. There is high-speed internet, a CD player and a DVD player with a large screen in Harbor Cottage. The guest house is intentionally free of these. The main house (Harbor Cottage) is double-storied, its large master bedroom upstairs looking out to sea and offshore islands. It has a queen-sized bed, ample closets and bookshelves, and a desk overlooking the wetland estuary. There is a full bathroom with deep tub bath and hand-held rinsing shower, and a separate laundry room. An outdoor shower, built of cedar, is attached to the house. Downstairs the open plan living and dining room has large windows facing the sea. There is a well-equipped gourmet kitchen with 5-burner Gaggenau gas hob, a Sub-Zero fridge/freezer, and dishwasher. The generous dining and living area comfortably seats 6 - 8 people and there is a wood burning stove in the living area. A long antique vintner's table is used as a desk, set in front of the sea view. Windows on all exposures offer views of water and wetland, and flood the house with light. The single-storied, two-bedroom guest house allows our property to be used as a generous family home. The guest house is simply furnished and comfortably sleeps four people in two bedrooms, each with queen-sized beds. Each bedroom has closets and shelves, and the small full bathroom has a tub bath and hand-held rinsing shower. There is also an outdoor shower with stunning sea views attached to the side of the guest house. Our guest-house kitchen is equipped for preparing coffee, tea and simple meals, with a small refrigerator, toaster oven, electric toaster, electric cordless kettle, microwave and coffee maker. In the open plan guest house living area there is a wood burning stove, a generous daybed with linen slipcovers, comfortable chairs, an antique pine kitchen table and a desk. The guest house is quiet, sun-filled, and its large screened cabin windows open out fully to catch passing breezes. Harbor Cottage and the guest house share the same dazzling views of sea and offshore islands and have direct access to the water for playing on the rocks, swimming, fishing and kayaking. Facing due south, both cottage and guest house share endlessly changing views of light and sea. An old millpond nearby streams into the sea to the east side of our land where a small wetland is a haven for ducks, terns, herons, migratory and sea birds. Our home is ideal for couples, families and when more than one generation of a family want to vacation together. Older kids love the guest house, giving their parents peace and quiet in the main house. Grandparents sometimes share the guest house with younger children. Couples often use the guest house for working on projects. The two-house arrangement allows people to enjoy quiet times in between sharing meals and activities. We provide a large dome-type Weber charcoal outdoor grill, and there is a picnic table with benches set on the front lawn that comfortably seats 8. We regularly eat breakfast and lunch at the outdoor table, and our outdoor lobster and corn suppers round the picnic table are a messy summer ritual. In summer we swim off our front rocks, and launch our kayak through a passage in the rugosa rose hedge. Talented fishermen friends catch sea bass off our rocks! In late summer the shore in front of our two houses is tinted blue with sea heather and lavender, and in Autumn the grasses and wild roses turn russet and golden. Year-round our view of the tidal bay and offshore islands is a source of pleasure and wonder. Each house has been renovated with fidelity to its own modest history and character. Together they express our deeply felt love for the tradition of such wooden houses and the ways of life they stand for along the shores of Maine, and our wish to perpetuate them. Our home is available all year for rent.
