Interaction with GuestsSince we started our homestay, we have had guests' from diverse backgrounds, countries and interests. Some were solo travellers, few couples, families as well as large groups. We are really enjoying this idea and learning a lot from the honest feedbacks we receive from our guests.
We are simple hill folks with the love for life, community, music, people and nature. My Dad is a writer and he has a great collection of books in his library which our guest are most welcome to use. Ask him to teach you Nepali or talk about Nepali literature; English classic; Russian and Chinese folks tales. He also voluntarily runs a community school - Mahatma Gandhi High School. We would love if you would like to volunteer, teach and intermingle with students and teachers.
We are comfortable speaking in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tibetan and Nepali.
We aim to contribute in the further development of Mahatma Gandhi High School. Our guests are welcome to make financial contribution or are encouraged to volunteer in educating students on career opportunities, especially in growing field of IT, Environment, Energy, Engineering and Medicals
Environmental Initiatives and Challenges
Waste - Waste is a big challenge for us as Darjeeling does not have any infrastructure for proper pickup and disposal for residential or commercial waste. Recycling does not even exist. We aim to gradually work towards creating proper community waste disposal bins, and regular pick schedules from the Municipality for our Bhutia Busty community. Big challenge!
Water - Water is another big challenge. We harvest water during the monsoon season, which helps us in many ways, but it is still not enough. The plan in progress is to build a water reservoir, where we can store more water, and also, help few homes nearby during water scarce seasons.
Energy - Power is currently beyond our control. The only option we have is backup inverters during the power outage. Unfortunately, the batteries that run the inverters are not at all environmentally friendly. In winter, we use room heaters that run on LPG and provide in-bed hot water bottles for our guests. The NeighborhoodA couple of minutes' walk farther down our home is the heritage Bhutia Busty Monastery, The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, The Lebong Race Course and mini hiking trails. We will be happy to take you around for short hiking trails most tourist wouldn't know about :) Getting AroundThe Darjeeling Bus Station is 3 km away, Darjeeling Railway Station is 4.5 km and the Bagdogra Airport is 65 km away. Everyone in Darjeeling walks within Darjeeling town. However, to travel around Darjeeling visitors can book private taxis or use shared taxi's. We will give you full details on your arrival. Other Things to NoteTHIS TO NOTE
We are not a full-service hotel. Our home is in a quiet residential area, close to nature, with an exquisite view of the Himalayas. If don't like short uphill walks or prefer hustle-bustle of the bazaar, please ask in detail before booking.
Taxis - Please inform us in advance for all taxi requirements and airport/railway pickups. LOCAL TAXIS WILL DROP YOU RIGHT AT OUR DOORSTEP! Yes, taxis are available and reach our home!
Meals - Guest are to inform us a day in advance for all meals. We want to make sure that food we serve is yummy and of the best quality.
Resources: Please...Please use water sparingly. Unfortunately, Darjeeling has a serious shortage of water.
Room Service: We only provide room service and change of towels on request -- this helps us save a lot of water! Please feel free to let us know anytime.
Location - Our home is about 10-15 minutes walk from the town centre, with a slight uphill walk when heading out to the market.
Car Park - Car park is available only within our premises. It is an open car park, and only suitable for small cars. Please inform us if you are driving to Darjeeling. We highly recommend hiring a local taxi driver rather than driving yourself, as the roads are narrow, windy and can get tricky.
Tea Tasting Tours - If you would like to visit tea gardens for tea tasting/sampling tours, please let us know in advance and we can arrange that for you.
We can help arrange various sight-seeing, tours etc in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim and Bhutan. Please ask.
