There is nothing quite like relaxing on the veranda watching the wonders of nature take place all around. Bessie Baker is a haven for birds, particularly the island's humming birds, and they are easily spotted in the trees surrounding the garden.
Many villagers live largely from fresh produce grown nearby. This includes mangos, avocados, bread fruit, oranges, bananas, coconuts, pineapples, sweet potato, yam, cocoa and plantain - all of which are seasonally available to buy from villagers. There is also plenty of opportunity to try fruits which are only found in Jamaica, and are well worth experiencing. Bessie Baker and the surrounding area also offers an abundance of plants and herbs which have been used by generations of families for their healing properties - villagers are more than happy to explain the background, uses and stories surrounding these plants which often have medicinal uses. There are several small shops within a few minutes walk and there are always villagers selling fresh produce picked from the area on the roadsides.
