The SpaceDragonfly Flats is a serene getaway perched in the mountains overlooking the sea, built by hand. The cabin offers rare access to the publicly protected Davenport coastline and mountains, and is the perfect retreat for two. The cozy structure features skylights and airy french doors to maximize access to nature, and is furnished with rustic ranch-style decor. The space includes a bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a bathroom, an outdoor/indoor kitchen with full amenities (fridge, stove, oven, microwave), and sunny porch with adirondack chairs and soaking tub, and an outdoor laundry area with washer/dryer. The beach is a 3-mile drive away, along historic Swanton Road. Keep going another 5 minutes south on Highway One to explore the postcard stamp-sized town of Davenport, where you can pick up a freshly baked breakfast at our beloved Whale City Bakery. Linger a little longer to explore the artists studios and antique shops along the coastline. After 30 years of living here, we have lots of local recommendations for secret beaches, hiking and "U-Pick-Em" strawberry picking :) Stay for a weekend or stay for a few weeks! Guest AccessThe property is a 5-acre ranch that has three structures (including the cabin). The host lives at the main house on the property and full-time tenants live in the adjacent studio (both about 400 feet away from the cabin). The cabin was constructed with privacy in mind and is enclosed by trees on one side and a golden grassy hill on the other. You are welcome to explore the gardens as you wish and please pick fruit during your stay here. Interaction with GuestsI'm typically available to greet you, and if I'm not home, my property managers, Wendy & Chris are often here to welcome you and show you the cabin. Aside from that, we all live quite privately on the property, so you'll enjoy privacy during your stay. If you explore the other side of the property, you may see us gardening or tending to the bees or chickens that we sometimes raise here. Of course, if you have questions or need anything at all, you are welcome to swing by the main house! The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is tucked away off the famous Swanton Road on the Slow Coast of Davenport. We are a community of potters, sculptors, writers and organic farmers. Local highlights are all about nature -- exploring the tidepools at Davenport Landing Beach, visiting Swanton Berry Farm where you can pick strawberries (and experience their home-cooked strawberry desserts), hiking and bike-riding the many trails in the region, and so much more. A 10-minute drive south is the little town of Davenport, where you can find a handful of local restaurants (oceanside Whale City Bakery is our absolute favorite for a latte and turkey-cheese croissant), and Santa Cruz is another 10-minute drive south. If you head north, there are wonderful local breweries, restaurants and shops in the small towns of Pescadero (30 min drive) and Half Moon Bay (40 min drive), with tons of wild, uninhabited beaches to stop at along the way. Driving Highway One is half the fun! Getting AroundYou will definitely need a car to get here. Unfortunately there is no access to public transportation. Other Things to NoteAccess: there is no wifi/internet at the cabin and very limited cell coverage. We do have internet at the main house on the property, so of course you are always welcome to swing by if you need it! Remember you will mostly be out of service during your stay here. History: The cabin is named for the historic local nickname of this property -- Dragonfly Flats -- because of the dragonflies that congregate in this sunny area. In addition, you'll see lots of extraordinary wildlife (butterflies, bobcats, hummingbirds, owls, foxes) on the property.

The home is surrounded by State Protected open land and has no fencing, which leads to an incredible feeling of expansiveness and privacy. The neighborhood has only 5 other homes on the sand. You have a 360 degree view of green, rolling hills, cows, wildflowers, and ocean. The home was constructed around the view and the natural setting. Look for natural finishes (bamboo, slate, granite, maple, zebra wood, etc.) along with personal touches in the construction (porthole-windowed mahogany front door, custom surfboard-inspired fireplace mantel, compass in laid into the tile, wetsuit hooks in the Master Bathroom, etc.) The visit feels like a remote retreat, but is conveniently located near everything one could want (a small town within a mile; the City of Santa Cruz within a 10 minute drive; and the metropolis of San Francisco only an hour or so away...with all driving being along the spectacular ocean Highway One. The SpaceMake it a retreat for the whole family, or gather some friends and get away for some blissful quiet this winter in Davenport. This is a family-friendly space, good for kids 5 and up. The welcoming home includes cable (17" tv), wifi, dishwasher, washer & dryer, and a well-appointed kitchen. The property has a hot tub and two semi-private sleeping areas off the main bedrooms for kids/others. Guest AccessThe whole home will be accessible to guests with the following exceptions: the 'pool' (an unimproved and UNFILLED pool at the back of the property) the upstairs main closet (there will be a portable closet made available) and the garage. There are two workspaces for desk work, a living room with entertainment center, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, pots & pans, service for 8, juicer, coffee maker, etc.), hot tub, and cottage. The yard is mostly unimproved, but there is a deck and private kitchen garden for hanging out. Interaction with GuestsWe will provide you with the numbers of a few people you can call with questions or if you need help with anything during your stay. John and I will be out of the country in the Yucatan and Chiapas. The NeighborhoodSurrounded on three-sides by protected open space now being considered for National Monument Status, the space gives you a sense of being on retreat from the world. Great access to world-class beaches and surfing, wonderful local options within walking-distance for wine tasting, great music and food, outdoor dining, pastries and coffee in the mornings, etc. 'Town' (i.e. the Westside of Santa Cruz) is only 10 minutes away by car and has natural food stores, bakeries, breweries, great eateries, and West Cliff Drive and Natural Bridges State Park are right there. Año Nuevo State Park, lovely Pescadero, Pie Ranch, Greyhound Rock, and Waddell creek are all just a hop skip to the north. Getting AroundPretty much need a car to be able to get to Santa Cruz and to access the many cool destinations along the coast that make this spot so unique. Public transportation is very limited. Also great for bicycle tourists. Other Things to NoteThe space (particularly the yard) is NOT APPROPRIATE FOR SMALL OR UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN. I care a lot about kids, and our property has several hazzards--particularly the empty concrete pool at the back of the large yard (out of view), with a (non-safety approved!) suspension bridge over it. (We will eventually fill this.)
