By request, there is a nice Memory Foam floor mat; no charge, XL Twin bed size. The large picnic table picnic table on the deck seats 8. Dayville has a population between 150 and 200. There's a school for the 58 students, a mini-market with gas, coffee drinks, and DVD rentals, a mercantile with a liquor shop and bike shop, a Growler Fill Station with ice cream and a café (open Wed 7:00 am -Sunday 3:00 pm). Dayville is 125 miles east of Bend, in the John Day Valley, at the confluence of the main stem of the John Day River with the South Fork John Day River, 4.5 hours from Portland Airport and 4 hours from Boise Airport. From any direction it is a beautiful drive to Dayville with few cars on the road and majestic views of open landscape with rolling hills. From Portland I suggest you head east on the Gorge before heading south at Biggs Jct, east at Wasco and traveling through the windmill covered grass lands, Condon, Fossil, Spray and the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. From Dayville, traveling back to Portland, if summer traffic will not be bad, I would stay on Hwy 26 to Prineville and Madras and the road will take you through the Indian Reservation in Warm Springs and over Mount Hood to Sandy. Dayville is a quiet place to stay, a place to get away to, a place to write a book or just enjoy a simpler life for awhile! Currently, Verizon is the only carrier providing cell coverage to Dayville. There is a land line for emergencies and for receiving calls. The Wi-Fi is good and there is a flat screen and HDMI cord for viewing Netflix via your phone or laptop, and DVD's for children, but no television reception. For those returning for a second stay, please know the resident tuxedo cat Oscar was loved well and adopted by a Park Intern. The nights are cold and the days are filled with dry blue skies perfect for hiking the Blue Basin, Time Left Behind, or Black Canyon Trails, going to the Visitor Center, or taking an auto tour through Picture Gorge, the Painted Hills and the Park. My favorite historical museums in the area are the Kum Wah Chung Museum in John Day and Dewitt Rail Road Museum in Prairie City. In the summer months plan a longer stay if you would like to visit Ritter Hot Springs, Magone Lake and the Strawberry Wilderness Area. Come, Enjoy and Play in Grant County!
