The SpaceThis newly finished apartment is exceptionally clean. A great "home away from home" with everything you need for extended stays -- kitchen, washer and dryer, king size bed, off street parking, TV, wireless internet, and a beautiful yard with deck, patio and views of the bluffs. Guest AccessYou'll have the entire lower-level apartment to yourself, off-street parking, TV and internet, and access to the yard, deck, patio, and grill. Interaction with GuestsOur family lives in the the home above the apartment, so you're likely to see us come and go, play outside, take our dog for walks, and grill outside during the summer. We have two children (12 and 7) and a dog, so you may hear the occasional pitter-patter of feet above you. We're conscious of being quiet for our guests, especially during sleeping hours. The NeighborhoodThe apartment is in a beautiful and quiet residential neighborhood, with the Trout Run Trail, river, and bluffs just beyond the backyard. Getting AroundThe apartment is 1/2 block from the Trout Run Trail access, and three blocks from downtown Decorah. It's easy to get anywhere in town by foot, bike, and car. If you need transportation, you can set up a ride with Decorah's friendly Hometown Taxi. Other Things to NoteThe apartment is in the lower level, so you will have to walk down seven steps to reach it. The ceiling is a dropped ceiling, and exceptionally tall people might find it feels close. Also, the bathroom is not right next to the bedroom. Just saying. :-)

The SpaceWe were early adopters of solar energy, having been off the grid since 1989. Daniel is pretty darned knowledgeable about many things having to do with alternative energy, sawdust toilets, gardening, building, wood splitting, rainwater collection, and more. Our home is a warm place of wood (mostly local) and old things made well in the distant past. We live by the maxim "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" and this makes space for much beauty. Guest AccessEverything where we live on 29 acres, plus walking trails through the woods to the creek and our neighbors at the Pepperfield Project. Interaction with GuestsWe're likely to bump into each other, sharing a bathroom and kitchen and the outside spaces. If you want privacy you'll stay in the bedroom, go out into the woods, or go to town. The NeighborhoodWe live in a beautiful rural neighborhood just 6 miles North of Decorah, where there is much to see and do. Sustainable agriculture and grassroots education are happening here in a big way, and if you are interested in learning things about some of the systems we have in place at Fern Hollow we'd be glad to show you. Getting AroundCars, carpooling, biking, walking, and hitchhiking are the ways to get around.

The SpaceTrout River meanders just down the hill from the cabin and can be accessed by a ten minute walk through the woods. We own over a half-mile of stream frontage. Its clear spring water makes for wonderful year-round trout fishing, or swimming and relaxing on a hot summer's day. The hiking is great, whether it be on the trails and deer tracks through the oak forest, along the meandering trout stream, or through our several fields of native prairie grasses. The state of Iowa owns 120 acres of public land just down the road available for fishing, hunting and hiking, too. And just a few miles beyond is the large and remote 1,000+ acre Coon Creek Wildlife Management Area. Come stay at one of the prettiest farms in all of the Driftless Region. The cabin was built in the 1850s as a Norwegian-Lutheran parochial school. Built of old growth oak, walnut, and elm trees, the house feels rich and textured, the product of a different era. In 1898 it was disassembled, moved across a field, and rebuilt as a house by Norwegian immigrant Peter Losen. It remained lived in until the late 1970s and fell into disrepair. In 2007 we disassembled the house, moved it to its present site, and spent three years lovingly restoring it. We warmly welcome you. Guest AccessThe cabin comfortably sleeps three. Upstairs is a comfy, yet very firm queen size bed. Linens, blankets and towels are provided. There is a pullout twin sized bed that may accommodate a third person, but note the pullout bed is in the same space as the queen bed. On the main level you'll find a small yet totally functional kitchen stocked with all the kitchen supplies you'll need, including fair trade and organic coffee and teas. Also on the main level you'll find comfy arm chairs, a kitchen table, a bookshelf of interesting books, board games, photo albums of the historic cabin and information of the surrounding area. The bathroom is on the main floor and the shower is upstairs in the bedroom. Both the bathroom and shower are stocked with organic soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Towels and wash cloths are provided. The porch is wonderful with amazing views of Trout River valley. The landscape is absolutely stunning- you'll agree! There is a fire ring with supplied firewood. With various infestations, please don’t bring your own wood. You're welcome to fish and swim in Trout River. The stream can be accessed by way of a five minute path down the hill and through the woods. We recently won an award for our conservation practices, which include set-aside Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) native prairie lands around the stream and throughout the farm, bank stabilization, tree planting, and public fishing access. We own the only piece of private ground on Trout River that's open to public fishing. We're proud of that. You're welcome to hike the many trails, birdwatch, and poke around the farm as much as you'd like. But sorry, no hunting. Your cell phone and cellular data work here, but sorry, no TV or wireless internet access. Interaction with GuestsMy philosophy is that your time here is your own. If you wish to stop over to the big house and say hello, please do so. You're always welcome and I love to meet new people. But if you want the time to yourself, I respect that.

The SpaceWelcome to Fern Hollow Cabin, a rustic, historic log cabin in the lush woods of Northeast Iowa. This is the cabin of our great-great-great grandparents, Norwegian immigrants who came here in 1853. We restored it in 1989, and it's really beautiful...a walk into the simple and quiet past. The electricity is made right here, by our solar panels (in cooperation from a bright and reliable star). Our land is a Botanical Sanctuary with United Plant Savers, and is carpeted with native species that are medicinal and beautiful. The log house is filled with good energy from all the 165 years that people have lived here. It feels good to be connected to our past. It feels good to visit a place where the surfaces are brown, textured, and storied. And it feels good to remember that even without a phone ringing or email calling, you still know how to enjoy the passing of time. My ancestors didn't have any modern technology; we've added some but not too much. We get our electricity from the sun, which powers both the refrigerator and the lights. There is cold running water, and a simple way to heat it up. There's a completely modern cooking range, which doesn't fit the decor but works swell! There's a special toilet--ask for details if you're curious. If you want to use a computer, you can use a laptop and charge your battery but to get internet you'll need to drive to town. If you want to make a call, you can use the land line up at our house or take a short walk or drive up the hill to use your cell phone. Here you can experience what life was like before the constant ringing and beeping of now. In other words, it's simple. That's what you're looking for, right? A chance to get away from the clutter of everyday life, and a chance to step into another time: that's what you'll find at Fern Hollow Cabin. It is good. The cabin is 6 miles from Seed Savers Exchange and right next door to the Pepperfield Project, dedicated to promoting and teaching hands-on cooking, gardening and agrarian life skills. It's 6 miles from our beautiful town of Decorah, where interesting things in the arts and outdoor activities are happening all the time. Whether you are alone or with a partner, bringing children or even a dog, we warmly invite you to come and stay for a day or more. Wrap yourself in the songs of the woods. (URL HIDDEN) We Love Kids and Kids Love it Here Remember that time you went to an old museum cabin and wished you could stay all day and play? It’s like that, only this time you CAN stay. And not only do you get to read and play games and fall asleep and wake up in enchanted log house; on top of all that there’s the woods for running around, making forts, catching fireflies, picking flowers, and watching fairies. The Little Log House, just across the creek bed, is a favorite place for the young ones. It’s just far enough away that they feel brave to go there, but you can see them playing from the front yard of the (not-so) Big Log House. The tree fort, now sitting on stumps on the woods floor because the tree aged and died, is kinda’ modern art: it’s pentangular, with a sun roof! Three kids can sleep in there easily during camp-outs from the retreat! We like to sing and dance with children and their families, and if you ask for a family singalong at the cabin you're almost sure to get one! Plus: swimming in Canoe Creek, campfires, watching the work around the place, and seasonal events like cider pressing, gardening, black walnut gathering, maple syrup boiling, and maypole dancing. Our girls grew up in the log cabin, and we’ve left some of their favorite books, games, and art supplies down there for other kids to discover. There’s a small loom, marbles, wooden puzzles, homemade Lincoln logs, blocks, a flower press, and more. Guest AccessThe whole cabin is yours. The 29 acres where we live is yours to share with us. Interaction with GuestsOur house is a stone's throw away, and we are almost always available to answer questions or to chat. We've lived near Decorah for 35 years and on this land for 25 years, so we can help make lots of connections with the things you want to know about. The NeighborhoodThere are so many wonderful things to do in and around Decorah. It is easy to spend many days here. Here are some places you may want to visit. (sorry it's not possible to insert live links here--you'll have to look them up yourself.) (URL HIDDEN) builds local community through arts, cultural, and recreational events. Here's where you can learn almost everything that's happening while you're visiting. Seed Savers Exchange, famous and wonderful, our own local national park! Pepperfield Project, Fern Hollow's next-door neighbor, where you can take classes and walk trails. Decorah Bike Trails, extensive and growing Vesterheim, the Norwegian Heritage museum that people drive days to see. Canoeing in the area, one of our most popular outdoor activities. NorthEast Iowa Fly Fishing Guide Service ArtHaus, where you can take in arts events or take classes Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, your link to lots of businesses in the area. Ryumonji Zen Monastery, yes it's true and it's warm, welcoming, and unspeakably beautiful there. The SpaceIt is a small room with a full bed and should have everything you'll need. I am easy to contact by phone or Airbnb messenger so you can always contact me if you are in need of something. Guest AccessWe have a kitchen, living, and dining room that are all common living areas. You're welcome to make a meal there as long as the dishes are done afterwards, or sit out on the porch and relax. Interaction with GuestsWe tend to stay fairly busy so there will often be times when my husband and I or our other housemates aren't in the house. However, I'm always happy to answer a text or phone call. We know the area pretty well and would be happy to give any recommendations! The NeighborhoodMain Street is just one street over from Water Street and we are only about a 5-7 minute walk from downtown Decorah. Guest AccessWe encourage our guests to utilize our flat as they would their own space. Interaction with GuestsDoug and Andrew welcome you to our flat in the heart of Decorah. We moved to Decorah a year ago with our children from Southern California. Immersing our family into life in Decorah makes us great tour guides as we have recently become explorers of the beauty, diversity and culture of the Driftless Region. Owning a space where everyone feels welcome and well known was a dream difficult to realize in the heart of Southern California. Having both been raised in small towns, we felt it important to allow our soon to be teenagers the opportunity to experience life in a place where "everyone knows your name." Although we occasionally miss the warmth during winter, this is an amazing place to call home. The NeighborhoodOur flat is in the center of downtown Decorah. Getting AroundAlthough there is no public transit, our local taxi service is excellent. Other Things to NoteWake up cradled in luxury cotton sheets, to the smell of freshly roasted and brewed coffee from Java John's Coffeehouse, literally downstairs from your bedroom. Stroll down the stairs and order breakfast or better yet, give us a a call and we'll bring whatever you order to your door. The large deck off the kitchen begs for you to read the morning paper and enjoy the 270 degree views of downtown, the bluffs and the Vesterheim complex. No other property in downtown Decorah boasts views from literally every window.

The SpaceThe house was built in the early 1860s, and we think the back annex may have been added a bit later for a maid or mother-in-law. The layout is a one-up, one-down configuration, with the living room and kitchen on the main floor, and the bedroom and bathroom on top. Guest AccessWith this full apartment rental, you'll have a private entrance through a 3-season porch, an outdoor deck off the upstairs bedroom, plus a patio table and four chairs for summer dining under the apple tree. Interaction with GuestsWe live right next door and will be happy to greet you when you arrive if you prefer, but most often we'll just leave the door unlocked and the key on the counter so you can check in on your own schedule. You'll find information about Decorah on the table but feel free to ask us anything! The NeighborhoodThe Roost is located in Decorah's historic district. Just steps away is the Porter House Museum and a series of signs guiding you on a historic walking trail. Walk up the hill a few blocks to Phelps Park for a scenic overlook of the Upper Iowa River and surrounding bluffs. Walk downhill two blocks to the Vesterheim Museum, and beautiful downtown Decorah. Bring your bike and pedal just three blocks to hit the 11 mile Trout Run Trail loop, which takes you past the famous Decorah eagles' nest and the local trout hatchery. Our favorite local spots for eating & drinking... *La Rana Bistro for a fresh locally-sourced gourmet lunch or dinn(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), corner of Washington and Main) *Oneota Community Co-op for a great lunch from the hot bar, salad bar, housemade soups, wine and beer to go ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), corner of River and Water St) *Rubaiyat for happy hour and a good bar menu (563.382.WINE, 117 W. Water St.) *Pulpit Rock Brewery or Toppling Goliath Brewery for fantastic local ales *The Courtyard & Cellar for the best bar pizza you'll have, live music *check out (URL HIDDEN) or (URL HIDDEN) for local event listings! Getting AroundOne of the things we love about living in Decorah is going days without getting in a car. The Roost is within easy walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, museums, breweries, parks, the Upper Iowa River and the Trout Run Trail. You'll find maps and brochures on the table in the Roost. Other Things to NoteWe've set check-in and check-out times based on the time we need to clean between guests. If we don't have other guests right before or after your visit, we are happy to have you arrive early or stay through the day! Just ask.

The SpaceThis house is ideally located close to downtown, a historic city park, a large school playground, and Decorah's 12-mile paved bike loop. Once you arrive, chances are good you'll be able to walk most everywhere you want to go. If you're looking for a convenient home base while visiting Decorah (Luther grads? Toppling Goliath fans?), it's a pleasant and affordable alternative to hotel lodging. The house comfortably sleeps four in its second-floor bedrooms (queen and full), which share a bathroom. There's also a full first-floor bath, for more privacy or guests, if you'll need the sofa beds. Enjoy the privacy and convenience of this quaint, historic home, just a few blocks from downtown restaurants, coffee shops, the Coop, and more. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the whole house: two bedrooms, two full newly remodeled baths, dining room, living room and kitchen in the house, and a loft/office studio (with gorgeous skylights) above the garage. Have early risers or night owls among you? Step out to the private, shaded deck and patio area with fire pit for early morning coffee or late-night catching up. Or, hang out in the loft, with comfy chairs for reading. Our library reflects our eclectic interests as business owners, outdoor adventure junkies, and art enthusiasts. NOTE: the studio loft is a sleeping/work space only and does not have its own bathroom. Interaction with GuestsWe try to make check-in easy and convenient. In most cases, I'll have the house open for your arrival, with keys and everything you need to get acclimated on the kitchen counter inside. If I cannot leave the house unlocked for any reason, I will text or e-mail you detailed instructions for retrieving the keys from a handy lockbox inside the screen door facing Mill Street. Need the WiFi password ASAP or recommendations for dinner, shopping or events? Check out the House Manual (set out with your keys) upon arrival. Or, shoot me a text. We're happy to give up-to-the-hour recommendations, whatever your interests! Have some questions or any concerns? I'm on-call throughout your stay and am often in the area in person. Text me for prompt response. Decorah is a community of trustworthy folks -- rest assured that if I can't be there immediately, I'll have someone on site ASAP to assist you. The NeighborhoodThis house is in a quiet residential neighborhood full of mature trees and well-kept, restored historic homes, just four blocks from Water Street, Decorah's downtown district. We particularly love being just blocks from downtown shopping and restaurants, as well as historic Phelps Park, a large playground located at nearby Carrie Lee Middle School, and a trailhead to Decorah's paved bike trail, along the Upper Iowa River. (Yes, most of it has reopened, after the flooding of summer 2016!) Getting AroundDecorah is walkable/bikeable from the house, and downtown parking is abundant. You won't have any difficulty getting around by whatever mode of transport suits. If you need to rent bikes, Decorah Bicycles on Water Street/College Drive (5 blocks) and Oneota Cycles (6 blocks) will help you out. Need to store your bikes once you unload? Feel free to lock them in the garage when not in use. Other Things to NoteThis house includes off-street parking: one garage bay, and one outdoor parking spot on the property. Guests may also park on Mill Street in front of the house. The historic nature of this home -- the majority built in 1890 -- gives the rooms a cozy, efficient feel, capped by high ceilings. While we can host as many as seven people in your party, it's best that you are comfortable with each other, as floor space is limited once the sofa beds are engaged! Both bedrooms, traditional in that day, are up the stairs, which are narrow, distinctly Norwegian originals! Also note that availability is heavily influenced by Decorah community events and Luther College events, as traditional hotel lodging is limited.
