REAL FARM EXPERIENCE
Ruby Slipper Ranch offers a range of farm-stay programs ranging from “hands-off” to “hands dirty.” Enjoy the farm ambiance and explore the island, or participate in a barn and garden tour, educational programs, and meal preparation using only organic ingredients from the farm.
Your cozy bedroom (with double bed) sits on the top floor of our unique hand-built straw-bale farm house. You have your own bathroom with shower and access to a spacious movement studio, you can look out at the farm, read, listen to music, or just relax.
Guest AccessREAL FOOD
One of the things we love best about our life at Ruby Slipper Ranch is the food – the flavours, the nutrition, the freshness, and the satisfaction of providing for ourselves and knowing that our food has been produced organically and locally. If you go for the full meal deal you will eat what we eat, and drink what we drink.
We drink coffee (good strong espresso!). While we recognize that it's not part of a 100 mile diet, we have not given up this addiction, so neither must you. We make a similar exception with bread. But otherwise, we mostly eat from the farm, supplemented by other local bounty, with only occasional ingredients purchased from elsewhere – so sorry no OJ, and a minimum of grains. Pasta, rice, etc. are part of the menu only when the potatoes and squash have run out... or when we really need some variety. We also have a wide variety of dried off-the-farm teas, and local apple juice.
You are welcome to participate in meal preparation, from chopping veggies to helping prep the meats to sharing your favourite recipes using food you have helped harvest or process from the farm. Meal prep is a great time for learning and sharing ideas about food, food prep, and the gardens.
A full meal deal can be arranged at Ruby Slipper Ranch. Meals ranging from $10 to $20 per person.
Also there are three local restaurants (hours of operation vary daily and seasonally), there is also a Saturday Farmers' Market (May long-weekend till Thanksgiving), and the Denman Island General Store (carrying lots of great local food, as well as non-local essentials). If you have special dietary needs we recommend shopping on Vancouver Island.
Interaction with GuestsREAL HUMAN EXPERIENCES
“Our ways aren't rules or laws, they're ways of living as good human beings. Rules and laws are made to be broken.” David Dick – Songhees Nation
At Ruby Slipper Ranch we are experimenting with ways of living as good human beings. To us, “a good human being” is one who lives a more balanced existence. A key aspect of this is the development of a “Positive Food Culture” one “that wrings the petroleum out of our food chain” (Barbara Kingsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). Another aspect is learning how to share with our land partners, co-farmers, and community members.
We strongly believe that the world needs this ongoing wave of “back to the landers” and “permaculturalists” to maintain and develop the skills that will enable us once again be in (better) balance with our environment.
Our farm programs invite visitors to walk “the way” with us, offering experiences that are fun, practical, delicious, at times challenging, and potentially transformative.
Experience Some of “The Ways”
You can go as deep as you want into authentic farm life with our farm-stay activities. We'd love to show you around, and if you're more than just curious, we offer you in-the-field learning from teachers who are living the life, every day.

The closest airport is the Comox Valley Airport which is a 30 min drive from the ferry to Denman Island. Public transport exists but is limited so renting a car might be in order. Please talk to your host about the best way for you to get here. Getting AroundThe island is small so there is no public transit. However, you can safely bike the island, walk to many points of interest (Downtown Denman is a 15min walk from our home), or get a ride from one of our many friendly neighbors.
