The SpaceThis is a beautiful garden spot surrounded by forest, with mountain views. It is completely private on ten acres. The grounds are lovely and the accommodation comfortable, homey, and tastfully decorated. It is a peaceful and charming spot for relaxation. Guest AccessThe kitchen is equipped with a double sink, four burner ceramic cooktop, microwave/convection oven, fridge, and dishwasher. The cupboards are fully stocked with cooking utinsels, dishes and cutlery. Kitchen basics are provided, such as an assortment of coffees and teas, spices and sauces. The cottage opens out onto a cedar deck where there is a three burner grill and outdoor coldwater sink. A fountain adds charm to the garden patio just outside the private entranc. The grounds are shared with the owner. Interaction with GuestsI live in the house attached to the cottage. Once guests have been given an orientation tour and have settled in comfortably, I leave the property to them if I have need to be elsewhere. A four year old female border collie, Suki, lives here. She is gentle and friendly. Children who have stayed here have loved playing with her. The NeighborhoodTilly Road is a quiet rural road with only five properties on its entire length. It is just off Highway 4, fifteen minutes past Port Alberni on the way to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park. It is very near Sproat Lake Provincial Park, where swimming, picnicing, water sports and fishing can be enjoyed. A convenience store, restaurant, and liquor store are within walking distance. There are many hiking trails in the area. Getting AroundA vehicle is necessary, as there is no public transportation to Port Alberni, the nearest city. The Tofino Bus can be caught, however, at its stop on the highway at the Sproat Lake Landing store, a few hundred yards away. The Tofino Bus or rental car can transport guests from the airport in Vancouver or from the ferry terminals on Vancouver Island. Other Things to NoteOn the deck side of the house is a barbeque with a nearby fire pit. It is a great place to tend a small campfire and watch the big open sky. There are long forks provided to toast sausages or marshmallows. On the other side of the house there is a hillside waterfall. This is a nice place at night, too. The solar powered lanterns come on, as well as lights hidden in the rocks which shine on the water. It is deeply relaxing to sit here at night and take in the sights and sounds of the waterfall while looking up at the starry sky. A fire pit table provides a cozy focus to the experience.

My mom really enjoyed being back on the Island, although we had a hard time taking ourselves away from Bayside to do anything. None of us wanted to leave! You have created the perfect beachhouse ambience. Loved the decor and discovering your special touches throughout the house! We will tell all our friends and family about it and hope that we can return soon!"

The SpaceThe apartment is comfortable for four adults. The bedroom is very spacious and the bathroom is large. There is a covered patio to have morning coffee or to watch the glorious sunsets in private. The wharf has been replaced with a larger lounge area for more sunbathing. Boats are $25.00 per day per boat, the same as guests, so add another guest if you want to bring your boat. Infants and children do not stay free, they are guests. Guest AccessYou have a private entrance via stairs next to the entrance of the upper floor. You should know there are lots of stairs to the lake as well, prepare for a workout you are going to love. Interaction with GuestsYour apartment is completely self contained. The wharf is shared with our family. The NeighborhoodWe are very rural and the road is a loop, great for early morning walks. Getting AroundWe are in the country so you have to have a car. Other Things to NoteThere are many things to see and do in the valley and surrounding area. Being rural we do have the odd sighting of bears, please be bear aware. We have often seen a beaver early in the morning or on his way home in the evening. There are lots of ducks, eagles, vultures and song birds. Because of all the mountains and trees, cell phone reception is spotty at best. We recommend you turn off your cell phones while you are here as it will continue to roam for a signal until the battery is dead.

The SpaceMAKE IT REAL @ RUBY SLIPPER RANCH Are you... > curious about an authentic rural life? > hungry for a zero-to-100 mile diet? > want to know what 'sustainability' actually looks, feels and tastes like? > looking to experience the view, not just look at it? Join us – your hosts Shayne and Tracy – as we explore what it means to be connected to the land, to the seasons and to the community on our busy permaculture farm. Come experience the joy of seasonal local food and learn why our motto is “there's no taste like home!” REAL FARM EXPERIENCE Ruby Slipper Ranch offers a range of farm-stay programs ranging from “hands-off” to “hands dirty.” Enjoy the farm ambiance and explore the island, or participate in a barn and garden tour, educational programs, and meal preparation using only organic ingredients from the farm. ACCOMMODATION Your cozy bedroom (with double bed) sits on the top floor of our unique hand-built straw-bale farm house. You have your own bathroom with shower and access to a spacious movement studio, you can look out at the farm, read, listen to music, or just relax. Guest AccessREAL FOOD One of the things we love best about our life at Ruby Slipper Ranch is the food – the flavours, the nutrition, the freshness, and the satisfaction of providing for ourselves and knowing that our food has been produced organically and locally. If you go for the full meal deal you will eat what we eat, and drink what we drink. We drink coffee (good strong espresso!). While we recognize that it's not part of a 100 mile diet, we have not given up this addiction, so neither must you. We make a similar exception with bread. But otherwise, we mostly eat from the farm, supplemented by other local bounty, with only occasional ingredients purchased from elsewhere – so sorry no OJ, and a minimum of grains. Pasta, rice, etc. are part of the menu only when the potatoes and squash have run out... or when we really need some variety. We also have a wide variety of dried off-the-farm teas, and local apple juice. You are welcome to participate in meal preparation, from chopping veggies to helping prep the meats to sharing your favourite recipes using food you have helped harvest or process from the farm. Meal prep is a great time for learning and sharing ideas about food, food prep, and the gardens. A full meal deal can be arranged at Ruby Slipper Ranch. Meals ranging from $10 to $20 per person. Also there are three local restaurants (hours of operation vary daily and seasonally), there is also a Saturday Farmers' Market (May long-weekend till Thanksgiving), and the Denman Island General Store (carrying lots of great local food, as well as non-local essentials). If you have special dietary needs we recommend shopping on Vancouver Island. Interaction with GuestsREAL HUMAN EXPERIENCES “Our ways aren't rules or laws, they're ways of living as good human beings. Rules and laws are made to be broken.” David Dick – Songhees Nation At Ruby Slipper Ranch we are experimenting with ways of living as good human beings. To us, “a good human being” is one who lives a more balanced existence. A key aspect of this is the development of a “Positive Food Culture” one “that wrings the petroleum out of our food chain” (Barbara Kingsolver, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle). Another aspect is learning how to share with our land partners, co-farmers, and community members. We strongly believe that the world needs this ongoing wave of “back to the landers” and “permaculturalists” to maintain and develop the skills that will enable us once again be in (better) balance with our environment. Our farm programs invite visitors to walk “the way” with us, offering experiences that are fun, practical, delicious, at times challenging, and potentially transformative. Experience Some of “The Ways” FARM PROGRAMS You can go as deep as you want into authentic farm life with our farm-stay activities. We'd love to show you around, and if you're more than just curious, we offer you in-the-field learning from teachers who are living the life, every day. Basic Farm Tour Walk to the barn to feed the pigs, and then tour through the free-range poultry area and the permaculture-designed gardens surrounding the house. Your hosts helped create all this and are happy to answer your questions and share stories about the joys and challenges of the sustainable farming life-style. Length: 1 hour Rate: included in accommodation. Farm Education Tour A more in-depth interaction with your hosts, learning about permaculture design, organic gardening practices, at-home food processing (such as canning, pickling, using the solar dehydrator, smoking bacon, ham, and other meat and making beef jerky) free-range animal husbandry, slaughtering, and butchering meat. These tours will be custom designed to meet individual interests, and can range from walking discussions to hands-on participation. Length: a couple of hours over a couple of days. Rate: 2-hour discussion tour – $40 Day tour – $60 The NeighborhoodDENMAN ISLAND ACTIVITIES Enjoy the slow life of this tranquil Gulf Island. Rent bikes, canoes or kayaks, or bring youglaur own. Spend time in Coastal Dos Fir rain-forests and on beaches teeming with life. Visit our many art and craft studios, our Farmers' Market, or one of our many festivals. GETTING HERE There are may ways to get to Denman Island, all starting with arriving on Vancouver Island, BC. Vancouver Island can be reached by driving and taking a ferry from Vancouver, BC or by flying into one of the 3 main airports on Vancouver Island. The closest airport is the Comox Valley Airport which is a 30 min drive from the ferry to Denman Island. Public transport exists but is limited so renting a car might be in order. Please talk to your host about the best way for you to get here. Getting AroundThe island is small so there is no public transit. However, you can safely bike the island, walk to many points of interest (Downtown Denman is a 15min walk from our home), or get a ride from one of our many friendly neighbors.
