The SpaceCentrally located, near the heart of Kathmandu, our house offers easy access to all the city while, at the same time, providing an oasis to escape to after a day out. There is a tranquility about the place that makes relaxing easy.
Trees surround the garden and house providing privacy and fresh air. Enjoy sitting out on the upstairs terrace, reading or writing, watching the birds and butterflies over breakfast and lunch, weather permitting. Another little oasis is the garden rooftop hung with Tibetan prayer flags, and full of plants. It is a special space.
Prospective visitors to Kathmandu might have heard about shortages of electricity and water. We have a well which has saved us from trucking in water during the driest of times, and a bio-sand filtration system through which all the water is moved before coming into the house. Drinking water is again purified by a new Euroguard system. Outside and inside lights, fridge, wifi and tv are run on solar power, when the mains electricity is down. Hot water is also solar heated.
We are well prepared for any emergency with fire extinguishers, earthquake alarms, and a fully equipped earthquake trunk in the garden. We mention this, not to worry guests, but to assure them that we have tried to cover all contingencies. This is not a fancy house, but definitely a friendly, comfortable, colorful home. You are welcome to enjoy our books and films, but ask you to leave them here when you leave. Our staff, a wonderful housekeeper/cook, gardener, and night watchman, are part of this family and take excellent care of us, and will do the same for guests. Guest AccessIf you become our guest, you have access to the whole house and gardens. We would hope that you can enjoy our place and care for it as you would your own. It is very special to us, and we are happy to offer lucky guests a bit of peace and happiness while they visit or work in Kathmandu and environs. Interaction with GuestsUnfortunately this summer, your host will not be on hand, but will communicate in setting up the bookings. A friend will be easily available to initially show you around, and answer any questions during your stay. The housekeeper and mali (gardener) have worked here for many years and know everything about the house and how we keep it. While they do not live at the house, they will always be glad to help. The NeighborhoodOur street is a quiet residential one, only 3 minutes to the main road. There is a new Korean restaurant with outdoor bar up the road, which is becoming quite popular. Nearby there are other restaurants and shopping - both open market, and popular supermarket. Getting AroundTaxis can be had only a couple minutes from the house. Very easy to get one. Also tempos and micro buses ply regularly to all parts of the city. We have parking in our driveway, and no car yet to use the space:-) Other Things to NoteWe will leave notes about important contacts, friendly taxi driver friends, as well as plenty of guide books and maps of Kathmandu Valley and the country, which should be useful for finding your way around. There are plenty of guidebooks and maps about Kathmandu and the Valley, as well as the region.
