Our two staff, Roshan and Ruane Chandana, will look after your every wish - cleaning, washing, shopping and cooking are all taken care of. If walking and boogie boarding are not enough to keep you entertained, then lie in a hammock and listen to the extraordinary sounds of nature around you. You can get out and about. Here are some of the local and not so local diversions: Dolphin and Whale Watching at Mirissa (December to April) Just south of Dondra, the most southerly point of Sri Lanka, you can join a boat to see pygmy blue whales and blue and sperm whales. Bryde, Fin and False Killer whales are often spotted - if you are lucky, you may see the stunning Killer Whales in December and April, due to seasonal migration between the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Dolphins are at their most profuse in the calm seas between January and April. Mulgirigalla Rock Temple Situated 35 minutes north of Tangalle, Mulgirigalla is a monastic site on an isolated 210m-high rock which rises almost vertically out of the surrounding forest. The rock was the site of an important discovery - the ola-leaf scripts discovered in the 19th century. These scripts offered a key to the translation of Sri Lanka's most informative ancient text, the "Mahavamsa". At the base of the rock temple are the monk's living quarters and a fairly steep path leads to the temple. The stepped path is separated by platforms where cave temples featuring murals and Buddha images can be explored. Turtle Watching at Rekawa and Turtle Conservation Project Just 30 minutes east of Tangalle, Rekawa is renowned for its long, undisturbed beaches and mangrove skirted lagoons. The beach near Rekawa is one of Sri Lanka's most important marine turtle nesting sites where five of the world's seven species of marine turtle come ashore to nest throughout the year. All five species of turtles that nest in Sri Lanka are either endangered or critically endangered. Amongst them is the Leatherback turtle, the largest of all the sea turtles, which can grow up to 3 meters in length and weighs up to 600 kg. It is at Rekawa beach that the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) has established an "in situ" nest protection and research programme, allowing the protection of nests where they are laid by the female turtle and for the hatchlings to scramble down to the ocean immediately after emergence from the nest. The project at Rekawa is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Turtles are most likely to come ashore under the cover of darkness. Join the people at the Turtle Conservation Project during their night watch in anticipation of that magical moment when a turtle comes ashore and lays her eggs. Bundala National Park Located 75 minutes east of Tangalle, this area of open scrub around the coast offers great opportunities for bird-watching (with around 150 reported species) and the occasional sighting of elephants and crocodiles. The salt pans attract a vast number of migratory shore birds, making this 6,216 hectare park one of the most important wetlands in Sri Lanka. The best time to visit Bundala is between November and March when the winter migratory birds arrive. Numerous grey langur monkeys populate the larger trees and in the scrub jungle you may also come across jackals, hares and spotted deer. Uda Walawe National Park Situated 90 minutes northeast of Tangalle, this is one of the island's most popular national parks totalling 30,800 hectares in size and bordering a reservoir. It is best known for its elephants (estimated to number around 400, including six tuskers) and bird-watching opportunities. It is primarily open parkland traversed by a main river and numerous streams which makes elephant sightings particularly accessible. Often the pachyderms can be seen in herds of up to 100 or more. Other animals which may be sighted here include spotted deer, langur monkeys, jackal, wild boar and water buffalo. Yala National Park Some two hours east of Tangalle, Yala National Park is world renowned as one of the best parks to observe and photograph leopards. Although it has one of the world's densest leopard populations, it still requires good luck to see one of the elusive creatures in its natural habitat. Covering an area in excess of 126,000 ha, the park is divided into 5 blocks, of which only Block One is open to the general public. The area consists of scrub jungle and brackish lagoons with stunning rock monoliths scattered throughout the park. The many different habitats provide a unique experience to anyone visiting the park and support a great variety of animals. The often low-density vegetation provides ideal conditions for safaris as it allows a clear and unobstructed view of the wildlife. Yala National Park has a substantial elephant population along with many other species like spotted deer, sambur, wild buffalo, sloth bear, mongoose and crocodiles to name a few. Also more than one hundred and thirty different species of birds can be seen, ranging from the lesser flamingos to Paradise Flycatchers, Crested Hawk Eagles and the rare Black necked Stork. Take the bus to Tangalle town or ask Ruane Chandana to take you in his tuk-tuk. For trips further afield, ask Roshan to organise a van or car with driver (additional costs for all transport). As the heat of the day turns to dusk, take an evening swim in the Indian Ocean below, join a game of cricket on the beach, stroll beneath the cool canopy of the coconut plantation or enjoy a cup of delicious Ceylon tea on the verandah. Nothing is too much trouble for our staff. After a day or so, you won't even have to ask - a refreshing drink will simply appear. Early mornings are very special at The Teak House. As the sun rises and the hibiscus flowers open, the garden is a truly special place. Renowned as one of the Sri Lanka's most picturesque and unspoilt sandy beaches, Seenimodera offers safe swimming all year round and incomparable walking. Stroll across to neighbouring Mahawella beach, a horseshoe shaped bay of over 3 km, long celebrated by CN Traveller magazine. If you are tired of lying in a hammock or fed up of boogie boarding in the Indian Ocean, you can reach the following diversions with great ease: Mulgirigalla Rock Temple Situated 35 minutes north of Tangalle, Mulgirigalla is a monastic site on an isolated 210m-high rock which rises almost vertically out of the surrounding forest. The rock was the site of an important discovery of the ola-leaf scripts discovered in the 19th century. These scripts offered a key to the translation of Sri Lanka's most informative ancient text, the MahavamsaÂ?. Yala National Park Some two hours east of Tangalle, Yala National Park is world renowned as one of the best parks to observe and photograph leopards. Although it has one of the world's densest leopard populations, it still requires good luck to see one of the elusive creatures in its natural habitat.

Designed by Geoffrey Bawa Claughton House is spectacular. It is one of the, if not THE luxury villa along this coast line and boasts 5 air con and ensuite bedrooms all with ocean views. Open plan and open sided dining and sitting area. Acres of garden. Pool. Pool side pavilion with BBQ facilities. Direct beach access to seasonally safe swimming and surfing. The bedrooms are separated in two buildings. 3 in the main house and the other 2 in separate buildings accessed by a covered walkway. One of these bedrooms doubles as a TV and games room (table tennis). The slope down to the pool..and further along to the beach is fairly steep and there is an internal communication system between the pool side pavilion and the kitchens.

The SpaceThe room is located in Lumi Holiday House which is one of the few properties in Sri Lanka where you can fully enjoy privacy. It has a large yard with lovely coconut trees and it's ideal for for two couples looking for relaxing and peaceful holiday. Guest AccessThe room has it's own entrance, the bedroom is spacious and functional, containing an A/C unit. It's furnished with a double bed, two chairs and wardrobe closet. It has it's own shower, sink and toilet. The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering. Our guests have access to everything in the house. We also have a baby crib and an extra bed. Interaction with GuestsSince the owners of Lumi holiday house are European, we have a Srilankan manager (Ananda) that interacts with our guests and provides his services when needed. Our caretaker Danister will be around (he lives just few meters away), so if you need anything just ask him. Please speak slowly as he is not so familiar with English and he is still learning. He will come to the house every few days to take out the garbage and water the garden. The NeighborhoodLumi Holiday House is built in an area of 700 square meters filled with coconut trees and offers a charming view to the Indian ocean. House is surrounded by stone wall and rich vegetation and offers privacy and moments of calm and relaxation. The external space affords the opportunity for endless games, safety and fun for children. The nights at Lumi holiday house are transformed under the starry nights with the help of discreet lighting which has been installed in the property. And while the landscape is the ideal place for isolation and tranquillity away from tension and crowds, it is close enough to the market place (tavernas, pharmacy, supermarket, bakery and clinic) as well as one of the most beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. Getting AroundWe can arrange Tuk Tuk (taxi) service for a reasonable price with certified and experienced driver Upul. Transportation from and to major airports and tours around Sri Lanka are also available. Other Things to NoteYou can cook your own meals or order traditional Srilankan food from our caretaker's wife. If you'll provide the ingredients she will cook you meals for free, otherwise you have to pay her, but the price will be reasonable. If you need her to clean the house, she will take care of that also (for free). When you'll arrive to the house our staff will prepare a "first aid kit" for you: some water, fruit, biscuits etc., so you won't be hungry :)

The SpaceThe property consists in 4 houses: the main house with the kitchen and sitting room, the Ocean villa with two bedrooms and en suite bathroom, the White Lotus villa with its own sitting room, bedroom and bathroom and the Tree House, built in wood, with its two large bedrooms and bathroom. The property can comfortably sleep 11 adults. Guest AccessThe full property is accessible to guests. The house was built by our family who have been coming to Sri Lanka for 20 years. The area is still very local, and it is important to respect local customs on the property and on the beach. Interaction with GuestsThe house is fully staffed: there are two housekeepers and a gardener. Darshika understands and speaks some English but she is not fluent. The staff are extremely friendly, they can cook local food on demand. Kandewattha has been designed so guests have full flexibility to ask the staff for help or cook themselves . Dharshika and Madu are not professional cooks but they can prepare local meals if you let them know in advance. They will pass you the bill for the cost of buying the food on a daily basis. Breakfast can be Western or Sri Lankan. For lunch and dinner, there is a simple menu to choose from. If you would like to cook yourself, you can find plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables at the market in Tangalle. There is also a supermarket, Cargill's Food City, which stocks all the basics but does not sell any wine or spirits. The NeighborhoodThe area is still very rural, mostly inhabited by local fishermen and their families. There are two natural beaches within 5mn walk: Mawella stretching over 2 km of pristine sand and Rock Beach, with spectacular waves, not for the faint-hearted. If you wish to eat out you can try Manahara guest house on the beach for local food. For more sophisticated food, we recommend Coco Tangalla, at the entrance of Tangalla. For a magical sunset try to go for drinks at Amanwella, just ten minutes away by tuk-tuk. Getting AroundThere is a daily sea plane from and to Colombo, landing on the lagoon, 5mn away from the house. Check Sri Lankan Airlines Colombo-Dickwella for schedule. The traditional transport from Colombo airport is with a van and driver, cost is around 15000 to 18000 Roupies depending on the van> It takes 3 hours. A car and driver can also be arranged to visit the Mulkirigala Rock Temple, the Yala or Udawalawe national parks. The magnificent UNESCO protected Galle is about 90mn by car and Colombo is 3hrs via the new highway. Other Things to NoteThe property is located on a small hill overlooking the sea. This means guests have to go up some stairs to get to the house as cars have no access up on the hill. There are about 3o stairs> We prefer to share that these stairs could prevent elderly people to go up and down during their stay. Luggage can be carried by the staff.

Walatta House is one of the most unique villas on the south coast. The house is partially ‘submerged’ into a hillside that overlooks the Indian Ocean and offers a seamless junction between architecture and nature. It is a superb example of contemporary design. The imperative was to maximise interaction between the indoors and out, to create a sense of openness and space. Thus the landscape is used as an integral design element with an open sided living room offering stunning views across the infinity pool to the ocean, the beaches and the sky. Indoors, too, the design blurs any distinction between house and garden. Courtyards and landscape penetrate the bedrooms and bathrooms, allowing maximum airflow and natural ventilation, and the heat absorbing grass roof also minimises the need for air conditioning - although all 3 bedrooms do have that option available. The rectangular infinity pools runs the length of the house, and the secluded beaches are just a few metres down the slope. There are 3 bedrooms - 2 doubles and 1 twin - all ensuite and with air con. The bathrooms are indoor / outdoor and have views onto the gardens. The kitchen and staff house is in a separate building adjacent to the main house.
