The SpaceOur father bought the little cabin near the road during a hunting trip 40 years ago, because he loved to fish, and it felt right. Many years later he and Mom built the main cabin. They began spending summers here, and their six granddaughters came to fly fish, hike, ride horses up mountains, play cards, have Iron Chef competitions, and day trip in all directions. We hope you form your own wonderful memories here. We fly fish out the back door (you WILL need a license per Colorado rules and game wardens have been known to come floating by checking.) The neighborhood treats the River as a sport fishing venue, so only flies or lures are used, and catch and release is expected. When we want to catch dinner, we head to McPhee Reservoir (or if we wake early enough, to Groundhog Reservoir). Over the years we have attracted a large hummingbird family that nests in the bushes. We would love it if you feed our friends on the back deck while you are here. You will find many good restaurants in the area. Our “go to” places include Pony Expresso, the Dolores River Brewery and The Depot in Dolores, Fiesta Mexicana in Cortez, Rustico Ristorante in Telluride, and Jailhouse Café in Moab. We haven’t decided on our favorite in Durango, so we would welcome your recommendations. Feel free to use the games, puzzles and DVDs stored in the cabinets at the base of the stairs. The books on the upstairs landing are (roughly) alphabetized. If you are unfamiliar with the Four Corners area, a Tony Hillerman mystery might be perfect hammock reading for you. We leave laundry and kitchen supplies and food staples as our family comes and goes through the summer. Please feel free to use what you find. We occasionally roast marshmallows for s’mores removing the grates from the gas grill. (Local conditions restrict campfires.) Complete grilling supplies are in the cabinet to the left of the store. There's no cell signal in the cabin, but there is a land line. Don't plan on trying to VOIP or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) over the internet. The satellite latency is very problematic. Speaking of internet, speed is 5Mb down, 1Mb up. Not lightning fast but glad to be able to get it in the canyon. Guest AccessRun of the house. Enjoy. We just have one closet locked with family supplies in it. Use whatever you find in the cupboards (spices, food items, coffee filters, etc.) Interaction with GuestsProbably won't see you. You'll let yourself in with key codes. Neighbors are wonderful and nice -- and they may check in to ensure you're not an interloper. The NeighborhoodSee the "GuideBook" for some local recommendations. You can get supplies at Walmart in Cortez, but the Dolores Grocery may meet your needs and be closer. Immediate neighbors are treat people all. Please honor and treat them as such. Getting AroundYou're on the highway up to Telluride, about 45 minutes away through amazing scenery of 14K peaks. Lots of trails along the road that direction. Other Things to NotePlease honor neighbor's property lines. Technically the river bed is private property -- the water and the fish in them are public. Neighbors aren't too uptight about walking the river, but be sensitive. Oh, and the property lines extend up the other side of the river another 100 ft or so. So those giant boulders that look fun to climb on are private property.

The SpaceThis home has 4 bedrooms to sleep 9. (Queen beds in 3 rooms and a double and a single in one bedroom.) With advance permission you could get several more people easily accommodated with sleeping bags and pads. It is a roomy comfortable home with two lovely open plan upstairs bedrooms. Guest Access201 is fully self contained with washer and dryer. Guests access the rest of the compound for recycling. Interaction with GuestsWe live on the compound and we enjoy meeting our guests and welcoming them to the area. However, guests are free to choose how much interaction they desire since they have an independent entrance. We have quite a bit of experience in the area being long term residents and are happy to share ideas and information as desired. There is also a pretty extensive book compiled with adventures and ideas of things to do in the area. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is pretty quaint. The Dolores River flows at the end of the block and is an exquisite relief at the end of a hot summers day adventure. The grocery store is 4 blocks to the West and the Library is 1 block to the East. A great park and Kids playground is about 8 blocks to the West of us. In the winter we can walk out the door, put on our cross country skis and ski away! In the summer we can jump on mountain bikes and head out. Boggy Draw is up the hill about 2 miles away - a local biking 'destination'. McPhee Lake is only about 1/2 mile away when we have a good snow year. Even in a low snow year the kayaking can be fun. Fishermen are always on the river and lake. We enjoy sailing when the lake is full. There are two scenic routes in the area, San Juan Skyway that takes you to Rico, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Durango, and the Trail of the Ancients leading you through the Desert and to many puebloan indian ruins. We have hosted several hunting groups because the mountains are nearby and hunting is a prime activity during the season. (Our elk hunters did fantastic, last year the Bow and Arrow season was not so productive.) Getting AroundPublic transport is not really a concept in rural SW Colorado. Bikes, walking or your own vehicle are pretty important. There is a bus route that goes from Durango to Grand Junction Colorado called the Road Runner.

For our modest friends, the bath now has a door that replaced the curtain. This will far exceed your expectations if you are not looking for a traditional home/hotel experience! Guest AccessThe Moon Room is open for your convenience and is near the proprietor 's residence if you have any needs. We invite you to take advantage of our shared hot tub and out door grill after your day's activities. Round this out with lounging in the shade of the nearby grape arbor. When visiting area sites such as Mesa Verde that prohibit pets, a large fenced in yard off another building gives them plenty of running room. A doggie door with access to the inside provides comfort during the nights or inclement weather. Your four-legged friends can stay safely and happily secured in your absence. Our private hiking/biking trail built by the master of "Phil's World" in Cortez, is awaiting your footsteps for daily walks. Stretch out in the separate Sun Room which has rugs and cushions for yoga, meditation, and other quiet activities. Large open parking areas allow for small RV's, vans, and trailers. Interaction with GuestsInformation about local activities like hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, rafting, eating out and other festivities and events is eagerly shared with our guests to enrich their stay in this enchanted area of the southwest. The NeighborhoodAfter a day full of outdoor activity or ambling through the streets and shops of our nearby towns of Telluride and Durango we can steer you towards our local places of "color" and entertainment. Just 5 minutes away in the village of Dolores, our micro brew pub offers super wood-fired oven pizzas, unique salads and "suds" and almost weekly live music. The small, local market offers a variety of locally grown organic veggies and on-site butchered meats and deli items. Only 15 minutes away in Cortez, you can enjoy a variety of ethnic restaurants offering Thai, Mexican, sushi, or down-home BBQ and breakfast joints. Summer brings oodles of produce to our local farmers market on Saturday mornings in Cortez and Wednesday afternoons in Dolores. There are boat and paddle board rentals to round out water play on the Dolores river and McPhee reservoir and bicycle rentals are available. Getting AroundNo public transportation only cabs or hitch hiking...!!! Other Things to NoteThe infrastructure of this small space is not equipped to handle the harder freezes that can occur in our area. As a consequence of this limitation, we most likely will not remain open during January, February or March. But you can contact us to see if this could change during any given time period. Check out our larger retreat home on airbnb called Casa Cielo Retreats which can house up to 6 individuals and is a fully appointed house with all the amenities of your own home. Beware !!! of (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps- it is sending guests north on CR 30 off Hwy184 and you need to go south on CR30 off Hwy 184 !!!

There's also a twin size sleeping nook in the living room for one person. Some guests have also had a 6th person sleep on the couch in the living room (usually for families that have 4 children). The NeighborhoodOur little mountain farm has the most wonderful, huge, ponderosa pines all over it. We also have great mountain views of the La Platas, Mesa Verde, Sleeping Ute, and the La Salles. It's peaceful and tranquil - a great spot for your family or to spend time with your fellow travelers stargazing, telling stories, and catching up with one another. Getting AroundThis is a rural setting so you will need a car, motorcycle, or bike. That being said, we are a 10 minute drive to both Mancos and Dolores where there are grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and playgrounds. We are easily a a 10 minute drive to some great mountain bike and hiking trails as well. You can easily spend 2 days at Mesa Verde National Park, a day exploring Telluride and the high mountain hot springs, and a day in the local canyons, nearby wineries, local food restaurants, and other hidden treasures of our region. Other Things to NoteWe are located on the San Juan Skyway, a great mountain scenic byway. Close to Mesa Verde National Park (20 minute drive to the entrance). During the right season be prepared to receive complimentary home-grown veggies. Nothing like a tomato fresh from the garden! Fresh eggs and goats milk may also be available seasonally. :) Our place is excellent for stargazing at night, friendly for families (room to explore outside, board games and a baby gate for the top of the stairs), and our guests have said the beds are very comfortable to sleep in.
