The SpaceWe are Michael and Barbra Fox. We became empty nesters in 2014 and decided now it’s our turn. We are very fortunate to find our own little piece of hidden tropical paradise, and the opportunity to open a small beachfront villa mini-resort in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. We found the most amazing but forgotten 3.5 acre piece of Heaven on Earth. With it came three existing homes, all in need of renovations and TLC. When we found the property it densely overgrown, but with lush botanical gardens full of Heliconia, Birds of Paradise, and colorful Orchids. The property was full of life with carefree monkeys playing in the forest throughout the property. Shells were dropping to the ground from the scarlet macaws and toucans eating the nuts from the trees above us. The property sits alongside a quiet remote beach in a very private setting. We have two swimming pools, but taking a swim in the ocean is all too inviting, as the water is smooth as glass. It’s shallow with no waves or undercurrents and safe for all ages with no worries.
It took about a year as we assembled crews of local tradesmen slowly restoring the estate back to its original condition. We rebuilt structures, adding two new pools along with building extensive walking trails throughout the tropical gardens for nature hikes. We opened our doors on December 19th, 2014, booked our first guests one week later and our business was launched!
What makes us different?
We decided our concept would be different. Through our experiences we realized a niche that was being overlooked. We would offer our villa homes as a private beachfront mini-resort, inviting individual parties to use exclusively one group at a time. We provide an all-inclusive alternative to vacationers wanting to receive the same five star amenities of a resort but while enjoying your time together in a private setting, without the masses of a typical resort.
We offer two beautifully furnished villa homes on the 3.5 acre beachfront property, with each one having its own private pool and deck area. Our property sits on the edge of our own private beach, and surrounded by luscious tropical jungle. The Osa is home to about 400 species of birds and it's a natural habitat to four species of monkeys.
Our villas have A/C throughout and sleep 6 to 14 people comfortably. Our Garden Villa is 900 sq. ft.with it own fully equipped kitchen, it's own terrace and swimming pool. The beachfront villa is 3200 sq. ft. and has a very large fully equipped kitchen, a wet bar, and a great room for entertaining social gatherings. The large pool deck and terrace offers a gas grill and seating for more than 20 people, guaranteeing great pool party gatherings day and night.
In the mornings? Well you can expect to sit and drink your coffee on the balcony watching the monkeys playing as they jump from tree to tree. You never grow tired of watching them. You will probably spot a dolphin or two as they swim past the beach. If you're lucky and without leaving your seat, you might even see a launching Humpback whale shoot out of the water.
The Whale Resort is a great choice for group vacations at a very affordable price of about $115 pp per night. This property is one of a kind, offering an opportunity to rent your own exclusive private beachfront resort, with every amenity you should expect with any five-star experience!
We offer a very private out of the way setting, but we are only 10 minutes from Puerto Jiménez, a larger port town that offers every amenity such a grocery stores, clothing and souvenir shopping, restaurants, night clubs, medical facilities, pharmacies, banks, ATM’s and a commercial airport. If you don’t want to make a trip into town, we have the local Canaza grocery and liquor store about 5 minutes from the property.
We have a 24-hour concierge, along with a full-time staff taking care of the gardens, the pool, the house cleaning, and laundry services. We also offer private chef services. We have our own 5 star chef who studied culinary for 3 years in the US. We choose not to limit him with a menu and usually just turn him loose, but you name it, he’ll make it!
The Whale Resort offers several tours and they are designed for all ages.
A Taste of the Golfo Dulce
Our Very Own Private Customized 1/2 Day water tour on the Golfo Dulce Bay where you will be picked up from our beach. The package includes whale watching where you will search for humpback whales as they migrate twice a year to the Golfo Dulce. You will also have the opportunity to swim with the pod of about 300 dolphins that live in the bay year round. We also search or manta rays, sea turtles, schools of fish and sea birds. This excursion always proves to be one of biggest highlights of our guest’s trip! We are proud to boast that we have the very best and most knowledgeable guide in all of the Osa.
Hike to the Tigre River waterfalls
This is one of my favorite tours and one you don’t want to miss. We take a short hike up the Tigre River, sometimes through the river, sometimes crossing it to trails and hidden paths. We stop along the way to see the locals panning for gold. They are happy and willing to let you take a swing at it yourself, offering their pan and some quick instructions and before you know it, you will have your own little flakes of gold. It’s common for these panners to mine anywhere from $25 - $50 of gold per day, but sometimes hitting a nice nugget, bringing a nicer pay day. Then as we continue up the river we eventually come to a beautiful waterfall to swim in, and if you want, you can make a couple of safe jumps! You can swim back into a shallow cave and take a quick pic to send back on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) no doubt! The falls also have a nice spot to lay back in to enjoy a nice shoulder massage! We have some fun in the water, then enjoy a beverage and some fruit that we pack with us up the river.
We offer guided horseback tours with two trips to choose from.
Rain forest horseback tour - You can choose an excursion through trails of the tropical rain forest of Matapalo to witness the many types of tropical vegetation and wildlife including various species of monkeys, birds, and maybe even a jaguar along the way.
Beachfront horseback tour - You can choose a trip through Puerto Jimenez to see firsthand some of the cultural sites and meet and great some of the most genuine native Costarican people. We will stop along the way for lunch to enjoy some typical Costarican cuisine, then continue on to the beach to enjoy some one of the richest coastlines the country has to offer.
Zip Lining Tour that also includes a tour of our butterfly garden and serpentarium
Our zip line canopy tour has 11 platforms, two repelling lines, and a Tarzan swing. The guided trip takes you in an air-conditioned van being accompanied by entertaining English speaking guides that will explain various types of plants and tropical vegetation as we make stops along the way. Then we arrive to our ranchero deep into the mountains. There you will be greeted with a fresh tropical drink as you are given a short safety demonstration preparing for your thrill seeking mission to sore like an Eagle through the rain forest canopy course.
Tour of our Botanical Gardens
Once boarding the boat from our beach we take you across the bay to Casa Orquídea, a beautifully landscaped private tropical garden with hundreds of species of ornamental and edible plants along with various species of birds, loaded with too many varieties of humming birds to count. After you enjoy our guided tour, there is time to take a swim on the beach and enjoy a picnic lunch.
Our Sunset Sailing Cruise
Again you will be picked up mid-afternoon from our beach to catch the best breeze coming off of the bay. You will enjoy a tasty meal prepared on board along with your favorite cocktail beverage. We stop along the way and drop anchor to swim and snorkel some coral reefs. Then capping it all off, you will catch a sunset at the mouth of the bay!
A Tour of the Wild Life Sanctuary
You will be taken by boat to the largest wild animal rehabilitation reserve where injured animals are brought in from all over the country. First when coming ashore you will be greeted by ‘Sweety”, a Spider monkey that was rescued and rehabilitated, and never left. This tour is a great opportunity to see up close and in person the many different varieties of wild animals that live in the forests and jungles of Costa Rica. A/C Throughout Guest Access(URL HIDDEN) Playa Juanito Mora isn't a private beach, because there's no such thing in Costa Rica, but it's a quiet out of the way beach. You may see an occasional fisherman, or a local walking the beach, but for the most part you'll feel like you have it all to yourselves!
We have walking trails full of colorful flora and fauna, along with several beautiful varieties of Heliconia along the way, (otherwise known as Birds of Paradise). We also have colorful orchids sprinkled through-out!
Don't be surprised to find yourself sharing your nature walk with the monkeys because more than likely, they'll be above you jumping around from tree to tree.
There are three species of monkey's in Costa Rica. We have all three living on or near our property and you will find that they are all pretty social, and as curious about you as you are of them. Don't be afraid of them. They are never aggressive and if they feel safe, they will slowly come down out of the trees and let you feed them. If you're patient enough and have a large supply of banana's, you can get them to come up right on your lap to snatch a banana.
The property is also full of Palma Real, which is a tree that grows a special fruit preferred by Scarlet Macaws and Toucans. Have your camera ready. It's not uncommon to catch a monkey, a macaw, and a toucan, all in the same picture!
We also have small seating area's spread out through the trails to enjoy the nature, so you might find yourself wanting to sneak away to read a book, have a snack, or maybe to enjoy a bottle of wine, chilling out and fully enjoying all of the peaceful serenity surrounding you!
We have a friendly full time staff that you may see from time to time unless you request otherwise. They'll be taking care of the grounds, the pool, and house cleaning services. We provide you a 24 hour concierge to see to your every need. He's friendly and professional and speaks fluent English. No matter what your request, don't be afraid to ask. He is there to help you in every way possible to make your experience as enjoyable as possible, so please let him!
We always strive to maintain our home and property, but should anything break or go wrong, please notify our concierge, so we can take care of it right away.
Interaction with GuestsWe always strive to maintain our home and property to the best of our ability, but should anything break or go wrong, please notify our concierge, so we can take care of it right away.
The NeighborhoodOur villas are situated on a 3.5 acre property sitting alongside a quiet remote beach in a very private setting..The area is very safe and quiet, with one road in and one road out.
We also have a gated access entrance with enough parking for 5 cars.
We are located about about 10 minutes from Puerto Jimenez and about 40 minutes from Matapalo. Puerto Jimenez offers several restaurants, bars, banks/ATM's, pharmacies, medical facilities, tour operators, a commercial airport, and plenty of shopping. Getting AroundYou have several choices on transportation. We are about 5 hours by car from Santa Maria International, or about an hour by air if you choose to fly down the coast on Sansa Airlines or Nature Air.
You can make your own arrangements to fly into Puerto Jimenez, or we can help you. If you prefer to drive, there are several rental car options in San Jose, We can also pick you up at SJO and personally provide comfortable transportation to and from our resort, no matter how large or small your group may be.
If you choose to fly on one of the local airlines into Puerto Jimenez we suggest you schedule your inbound flights for early time arrivals into Costa Rica. If you can't arrange for an early arrival or get in too late, we can help you make arraignments to stay at a hotel near the airport, then fly in to Puerto Jimenez bright and early the next morning.
If you choose to rent your own transportation and make the drive yourself and you've never been to Costa Rica, don't be intimidated. It's an easy drive. All of the roads are excellent from door to door. Some of the trip is highway with toll roads, and all of the roads are asphalted highway and it's hard to get lost. All of the major car rental companies are near the airport, and they offer GPS. Your smart phone can get you there too. Other Things to NoteCosta Rica has a high season and a low season. The low season is basically from Aug to early Dec. mainly because it rains more. I wouldn't let the rain deter you from coming to CR in any month though. It's always beautiful. It mostly rains in the afternoons in the low season, and picks up heavier in October but still very enjoyable. There is plenty to see and do all year around, rain or shine. The Osa is always a haven for a rich diversity of wildlife. We have a pod of about 300 dolphins living year round in our bay, along with Humpback Whales as the migrate to the bay throughout the year.
If you decide to make the trip, you can only imagine what it must feel like, seeing a 60' whale surface or launch herself, with her baby close by her side! It's not uncommon for our guided boat to run around the bay with a mom and her baby for an hour at a time, or longer!
We also offer a special tour package "A TASTE OF THE GOLFO DULCE" exclusively for our Guests! Don't worry about leaving anyone out either, we designed it to safely accommodate all ages. Looking for something with more of an adrenalin rush, just ask!
