The SpaceComfortably sleeping 8, we offer a fab place for families, couples or a party of friends alike. We have installed a brand new kitchen and there is a large wrap around deck to sit and enjoy the views, whatever the weather. There is a 2 night minimum booking ( 3 nights on long weekends). As you can see from the pictures there is a strong tradition of the "shack" in Tasmania- dating from the early 1900's families have established seaside homes to relax kick back and spend time with their families...usually made with leftover timber and recycled goodies from the family home, some are now so loved they are a national icon, and even heritage listed! Reflecting their owners with affectionately given names like "Pops Place" this is a community built over generations ..we just love it here- and want to share a family place that would rarely be discovered by tourists as it is well off the beaten track. Whilst we are surrounded by these little home made old beauties we have made our newly extended larger house much more comfortable and luxurious so that you are definitely not "roughing it!"... There is a queen bedroom upstairs with ocean views, two singles in rear bedroom with bush views, bathroom, separate toilet, fully equipped kitchen to cook up a storm, with a stove and a microwave and all the basics you will need for your stay. Breakfast is not provided as we are not at the location. Southport Pub nearby does great counter meals if you decide not to cook, and of course you can buy beer and wine there too. If you want to take the 20 minute drive to Dover, you can dine at the Dover Wood Fired pizza for the best pizza in Southern Tasmania. Downstairs is a double bedroom, a single and a bunk bed, with a brand new bathroom. There is a secure front lawn area with plenty of room to park your car and your boat. We even have a mooring if you want to hitch your boat to it and use our dinghy to row out to your boat. Remember to bring your life jackets as we are unable to supply them. Some of the comforts include: Wood fire to watch the mesmerising glow of a log fire on chilly nights- you can't beat a real fire. Laundry facilities down in the garage and you can line dry your clothes on the line provided near the downstairs access. Pure cotton luxury bed linen and towels with natural handmade soap from Tasmania's iconic Beauty and the bees skincare brand. Your own "tinny" as we Tasmanians call a dinghy (with oars only) to explore the bay or drop a fishing line for some fathead. If you have your own boat, Southport has an all weather/ all tide boat ramp and is the main launching point for Southern diving locations, cray fishing and game fishing for destinations such as the Friars, Actaeon Islands and the magnificent Pedre Branca. There is good fishing and cray fishing in the sheltered waters of Southport Bay. If you are adventurous, on a low tide, you might be lucky to get some abalone from the rocks around Southport Isand or oysters from the rocks near the boat ramp.Make sure you pick up your fishing licence from Service Tasmania. Check with Service Tasmania as to which licences you may require. Guest AccessIf 4 guests book- the top floor only is available, more than 4 guests, the whole house. Please note that there is external access only to the two downstairs bedrooms and bathroom. This may not suit a family Interaction with GuestsThis is our own holiday home, but we live elsewhere so we do not often get to see guests- but are on the mobile and email if you need us. Warning: there is limited coverage for mobile phones and internet. Try putting your phone on the window ledge! If need to make a phone call, there is a public phone booth by the jetty. The NeighborhoodSouthport is at the gateway to the South West Wilderness National Park. Keep driving south and you will find the iconic Hastings Caves and Thermal Pools. Take a guided tour of the caves and then take a dip in the tepid waters of the thermal pool. Head further south to Lune River from which you can take a trip on the Ida Bay train then another 20 minutes to the tiny settlement of Cockle Creek and the pristine waters of Reserche Bay and the beautiful white sandy beaches. If you are modestly equipped and reasonably fit you can take the 2-4 hour return walk to the stunning South Cape Bay which is mainly duck boarded through button grass plains and forest to see the sandy beaches and crumbling cliffs which make up Tasmania's Southern most tip. From here you can see the pounding surf sought after by the most courageous (or you might say "crazy") surfers. There is also an easy short walk to Fishers Point to see the bronze whale and a bit further to Planters Beach to see the ruins of the old Pilots Station (later converted to the Sawyers Arms Hotel). Getting AroundThere is no public transport. You will need a car.
