Sonia's house is on the beach front portion of the Amaya family property but faces the rainforest and a small private spring fed waterfall. You can see three of the four species of monkeys that reside in Costa Rica from the front porch or private covered gazebo (they come to eat the fruits from the palm next to the house and often look in from the skylight to see what you are doing-they cannot get in however). It is a wonderful experience for families and if you are interested in this special area of Costa Rica it is the best deal on lodging around. The home sleeps up to 10. There is a master bedroom with a king size bed, a loft with a double bed, a small bedroom with a twin size bed and two queen size beds in the main room/kitchen area. Everything in the home was made by hand including hand hewed timbers and decorative carved doors. The home took 4 years to complete and was constructed by Carlos Amaya. It is floor to ceiling all varnished tropical hardwoods (seven types) purchased from local subsistence farmers/neighbors under limited sustainable harvest permits (mostly brought in by horseback and dried on site). The Amaya family homestead along remote Playa Ricon on the Peninsula de Osa. This is the last frontier of Costa Rica. Accessible reliably only by horseback or boat this is the world of generations past. The house is next to one of the most biologically important spots on the planet, Corcovado National Park. Playa Ricon itself is virtually uninhabited where the only traffic seen is occasionally on horseback. Many of the local inhabitants on and behind the beach are related to the Amaya family, who were pioneers in this special corner of Costa Rica. Sonia uses the home when visiting but otherwise now lives in St Paul Mn with her husband and four children. The Beach The Playa Ricon has one of the largest concentrations of scarlet macaws in Costa Rica, and are seen daily snacking on the almond trees along the beach. The Pacific ocean out front looks out directly toward Cano Island providing some amazing sunsets. A favorite activity is just hanging out at the beach; swimming, boogie boarding, walking or just reading a book in a hammock. This portion of Pacific ocean is the perfect spot for deep sea fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, whale and dolphin watching and has an amazing number of endangered sea turtles. Playa Ricon is also very active protected sea turtle nesting site. Turtle releases are common during the nesting season. The Rainforest The resort and cabins back into into rainforest and the still partially working Amaya family farm, A specialty of the family are the horseback tours through the farmland and rainforest along the edge of Corcovado National Park, or take the horses to one of the best Canopy Tours in Costa Rica or just tour along the beach. No one knows this area better. Tours of Corcovado National Park are available with Consuelo Amaya (who speaks English, German and Spanish) who is one of the most experienced guides in this area of Costa Rica as well as from Samuel Amaya. Consuelo and her brother Samuel also give birding tours and have identified over 80 species of birds on the resort property itself. The normal way to reach Sonia's house is by boat from either Drake Bay or Sierpe. The Sierpe trip is itself a tour as you will pass through the mangroves of the tidal Sierpe River, then across Drake Bay and then along the Pacific Coast. The rental fee includes three meals a day at Dona Carmen's restaurant, which is part of the Amaya Family Cabins. Breakfast offers a variety of fresh, local fruits, juice, coffee, teas and your choice of made to order breakfasts. You can have a typical Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto, eggs and fruit, or choose pancakes, omelets, or eggs to order and toast. Lunch depends on how you plan your day. If you are taking a tour lunch is provided as a picnic. If you want to take off on your own and explore the nearby snorkeling beach Playa San Josecito or walk to the wonderful swimming hole Rio Claro lunch can be packed to go. If you just want to hang out at the resort a hot lunch will be prepared for you at the restaurant. Dinners are always a special event; everyone gathers to share stories of the day while enjoying a plentiful and delicious meal. The dinner frequently includes fresh fish, often from guests who decide to take the fishing tours(there is always enough to share), chicken or pork, with rice, beans, vegetables, a salad and a freshly made dessert. Vegetarian options are always available. Coffee and tea are available all day Unique location in center of undeveloped Playa Rincon just north of Cocovado National park and Casa Cocovado(. South of Drake Bay with closest resort to the north being Morenco(3-4 miles on beach trail).

A third house associated with the Amaya Family Cabins. This is Bernadette's house and it is located a short distance down the beach from the other two houses near the one room schoolhouse on Playa Rincon. You can cook your own meals in the small kitchen or have your meals at the resort for 25 dollars a day(for three meals) or pay ala Carte. It is literally at the end of the road, as long as you have a 4x4 or you can arrange for transportation with the resort.

I second house available in association with the Amaya Family Cabins on Playa Rincon. We are halfway between Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park. There are three houses available for rent on this isolated beach all of which are associated with the Amaya Family who were the original pioneers in this part of Costa Rica(excluding the pre columbian indian tribes who had their burial grounds on Cano Island, which is out front of the beach. You are not going to get anything like this in Drake Bay . It is like having your own semi private island without being on an island.

How to get here by car: Option 1: Important note: To get all the way to Drake Bay by car we strongly recommend a car with 4 wheel drive. You need to pass four streams between Rincón and El Progreso (although it is not necessary to cross the big river “Rio Drake” to get to Rio Drake Farm). In raining season, we recommend to plan your arrival around midday or in the early afternoon in order to avoid possible heavy afternoon rain falls complicating the access due to rising rivers. If your car does not have 4×4 or if you don´t feel like driving all the way to Drake Bay we recommend to drive to Sierpe and come by boat to Drake Bay (see second option). From San José, San Isidro, Quepos or Uvita: Drive all the way south until Chacarita (last gasoline station before Drake Bay), at the intersection there turn right to Puerto Jimenez / Bahía Drake and follow this street until Rincón before the bridge. There you turn right in the direction to Drake (gravel road). Follow the road until the little village El Progreso. El Progreso is before the big river “Rio Drake” and before the center of Drake (which is also called Agujitas). In Progreso, follow our sign to the right to Rio Drake Farm /Drake Airport. Follow the signs along the little road parallel to the runway until our parking area. From Neily: Drive on the Interamericana north until Chacarita (last gasoline station before Drake Bay), there turn left in the direction to direction to Puerto Jiménez / Bahía Drake and follow this street until Rincón before the bridge. From Puerto Jiménez or La Palma: Drive north until after the bridge of Rincón where you turn to the left in the direction to Drake (gravel road). Option 2 If your car does not have 4×4 or you don´t feel like driving all the way to Drake Bay, we recommend to drive all the way to Sierpe (it’s close to Palmar Norte) and let your car in a safe parking (e. g. “El combo”, the parking of “Don Jorge”, cost: $10 per night). Then take a boat to Drake Bay (about 1 hour boat ride). We recommended taking the one at 11:30 a.m. ($15 p.p. = cheaper and you get here by daylight). Ask for Alex (“Chancha”), he will be your Captain. Or take the boat at 3:30 p.m. (20$ p.p.). We offer a free pick-up service from your arrival point. In order to be able to pick you up (in time) please let us know about your arrival place and time with anticipation or call us at (+(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). Other Things to NotePlease let us know with anticipation about your arrival time and place so we can wait for you on time and pick you up at your point of arrival if necessary (free service). If you come by car, use a 4×4 vehicle. Here you can find more information about how to get here. In Drake Bay there is no bank and no ATM. We do not accept credit cards. We recommend bringing cash for your activities. The tours to Caño Island (Snorkeling and Diving) and to Corcovado National Park need a reservation at midday/early afternoon the day before. Please let us know with anticipation if you want to participate in these tours. At Rio Drake Farm the only electricity is with a solar panel and very limited. We do not have electric installations and the illumination is with candles. Please bring flashlights. We recommend charging your personal electric equipment before your visit. We recommend bringing sun protection, insect repellent, raincoat and rubber boots (especially in raining season). We provide a couple of rubber boots (sizes 37 to 43).

The NeighborhoodEl Progreso A small village situated 6km North East of Agujitas, El Progreso is home to Drake Bay Backpackers and the Corcovado Foundation, and is the center of community-based tourism in the region. The village contains three grocery stores (pulperías), two small restaurants (sodas), a school, two churches, a bar, a community center and soccer field, and Drake Bay Airport. It is also home to the largest of the beaches in Drake Bay, playa Drake, a large river system home to myriad species of bird, and several uninhabited patches of jungle to explore. At the hostel, it is possible to watch howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, toucans, aracari, scarlet macaws and much more, all from the comfort of your hammock. El Progreso is also home to one of our community-based tours, Madre Selva, and is just a 30 walk from the remote and spectacular playa Ganado. Rancho Quemado This fine village is located around 10km East of El Progreso in a picturesque valley, and is home to five of our community-based tours. Los Planes A picturesque village around 5km South of Agujitas, Los Planes features a canopy tour and a number of spectacular viewpoints overlooking playa Rincón. Other Things to NoteHow to Get Here Please contact Drake Bay Backpackers and let us know how you will be arriving in Drake Bay, so that we can organise transfers if needed. Plane Both Nature Air and Sansa offer daily flights from Juan Santamaria International Airport, San José, to Drake Bay (weather-permitting). Boat Two boats leave daily from Sierpe (near to Palmar Norte) to Agujitas (Drake Bay) at 11:30am and 3:30pm. From San Jose, take any bus going to Palmar Norte (5.5 hours) departing from the TRACOPA terminal or take the Transportes Alvarez and Morales shuttle service directly to Sierpe. At Palmar Norte you can take a taxi to Sierpe. A ‘colectivo’ taxi is much cheaper ($4) than a private one (up to $20). The boat journey (1 hour) costs $15-$20. When you arrive in Agujitas (Drake Bay) you can either make use of our boat transfer service ($20 per car, $8 per motorbike) or take advantage of the local bus ($2) that leaves Agujitas for El Progreso (15mins) at 1.30pm Monday to Saturday during dry season. Please note that this service is not always reliable. Bus By far the most economical option is to arrive using buses only. The route is slow (9-10 hours) but only involves one connection and is straight-forward. However, you must contact Drake Bay Backpackers before you leave to check that the local connecting service is operating. From San José, take the 8:00am bus to Puerto Jiménez from outside Terminal Transportes Blanco (Address: Calle 14, between Avenida 9 and 11). The ticket costs around $13. Tell the driver that you wish to get off at La Palma (Osa) (8 hours). A local ‘colectivo’ minibus leaves La Palma for Drake Bay at around 4:45pm (Monday to Saturday only). Tell the driver that you wish to get off at Fundación Corcovado in El Progreso (1 hour). It’s a bumpy ride! This journey costs around $5. Click here to download the Local Bus Timetable as a PDF (please note that these times are approximate!) Car From San José take either the coastal highway (via Quepos; route 34) or the mountain route (via San Isidro and Buenos Aires; routes 2 and 237) to Palmar Norte, before continuing on the Pan-Americana highway (route 2) toward the Panama border. At Chacarita turn West into the Osa Peninsula toward Puerto Jiménez (route 245). At Rincón de Osa, turn West onto the unsealed road and follow signs to Drake Bay. Once you have passed through the village of Rancho Quemado you will climb over the last mountain range and begin to see the sea. Immediately after the third river crossing you will see the hostel on your left, recognizable from a large sign saying Fundación Corcovado. Note: There are three rivers to cross and some steep inclines and so it is highly recommended that you have 4WD. It is not recommended to attempt the journey at night.

Casa Nirvanita is the main home of Nirvanita de Osa, our family's little Biological Jewel for the last 33 years, located in front of the beach in the last cove to the Southwest of Drake Bay, in the Southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Nirvanita de Osa is a beautiful 23 Hectare property, which enjoys 440 Mts of oceanfront, 4 clear streams that flow from the farm to the sea year around.(3 are born in the property) There are about 3 Hectares of various fruit trees including Mango, Rambutan, Starfruit, Mamey, Colombian Zapote, 2 types of breadfruit, Malaysian Water apple, Araza, Fruta milagrosa, 3 types of bananas, Oranges, Cashews, 5 types of cooconuts; gardens, and other crops; about 3 Hectares of 50 year old secondary rainforest; and the rest is composed of some of the Osa Peninsula's famous Primary rainforest (reputed to be one of the world's tallest) which is connected to Corcovado National Park a few miles away. The house which is about 410 M2; was designed by us and our architect to provide a simple, ample, open, luxurious shelter, that blends with the beautiful surroundings, and works well with the ocean, surrounding trees, and streams to stay cool and comfortable. It has a natural Air conditioning system by roof water mist cooling which we rarely use, as the house stays cool from the ocean breezes that flow thru it and the huge trees that surround and shade it. It is a unique beach front home located 70 Mts from the sand at Las Caletas Beach, and conveniently located to all the other beaches, islands, parks, and all other adventures available in Drake Bay, and Bahia Ballena. The house has in the first floor the kitchen, living ,dinnings rooms and a full bathroom. in the second floor you will find the 3 bedrooms with one king and 2 queen beds and private full bathrooms and has very beautiful ocean or forest views from every room. It has been powered by a combination of Micro-Hydro and Solar for many years, but it was recently connected to the grid for back-up and energy storage. Our house is open, with only half walls (which can be shuttered) and no screens (although all the beds have quality net canopies which we rarely have to use). All in all, our house is very much a part of the natural surroundings. Nature lovers love our house, but if you are not comfortable with the great outdoors, this is probably not the vacation spot for you. It is a place to disconnect, (There is cel phone and 3g internet but it is available 70-90% of the time and sometimes slooow), Casa Nirvanita is a place to practice or train in some serious Hammockology, relax, unwind, and enjoy the peace, natural beauty, and serenity. There are a couple of Kayaks for your enjoyment. (1 single, 1 double) We can help you arranging tours as : Horseback riding, Canopy and Zip line thru the forest, night forest walks, Boats and guides to take you Whale and dolphin watching, to Corcovado or Isla del Ca単o National Parks, sports fishing, or any of the other fun and adventure activities available in the area. The Osa Peninsula has been called by some botanists the 'Galapagos of Mesoamerica' due to its great diversity in plant and animal species. The Osa most probably has many more secrets to reveal about its flora and fauna, since only about 75% of the species believed to exist here have been recorded. With its unique climate, unlike that of any other area for hundreds of miles in any direction, The Osa harbors up to 500 different species of trees of which at least 4 species only exist in the Osa peninsula making it very important to keep the forest intact. The Osa Peninsula has the single largest expanse of a lowland tropical rainforest in the Pacific coast of Central America and is reputed to have one of the tallest tropical rain forests in the world. The Osa Peninsula is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. The home of over, 375 species of birds (including several endemic species), It has the largest population of Scarlet Macaws in Central America, 117 species of reptiles, and over 10,000 species of insects. Flocks of macaws, toucans, parrots, monkeys of four different types, coatis, kinkajous, agoutis, and sloths can be seen often. Peccaries, and from time to time even jungle cats (like pumas, jaguarundis, ocelots and very rarely jaguars) can be spotted by the careful observer. Drake Bay Drake Bay (Bahia Drake) lies on the northern end of the Osa Peninsula in the Puntarenas province. Probably one of the most well known destinations in the region, the tiny town of Agujitas in the bay was actually one of the most in-accessible places in the entire country for many years but that has changed recently. There is a small airport in the bay with several daily flights from San Jose, and Puerto Jimenez. Several daily public boats now make the beautiful 90 minute trip from Sierpe in the morning about 11 Am, and 1 about 3PM. The road access from the Golfo Dulce is long but beautiful, and passable year around. You can take a day trip to Drake Bay, but at least 2-7 days are recommended. After being 'discovered' by Sir Francis Drake in 1579 during his circumnavigation of the globe, Drake Bay has now become the gateway to Isla del Ca単o island and Corcovado National Park. There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area including ocean kayaking, river canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and zip lines. Bird watching and photography are also very popular around the bay and beaches. Ca単o island offers some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in all of Costa Rica. Nirvanita de Osa is probably the most beautiful and most private beachfront property in Drake Bay. Marino Ballena National Park is named after the Humpback Whales that migrate here each year to mate and calve their young in the warm waters, before returning to frigid waters to the north or south. This species of Whale is called a Humpback for the way they arch their backs on the surface before diving down. Whales from the southern hemisphere are here from August to October, and whales from the northern hemisphere come later and remain longer from December to April. The song of the Humpback Whale is a very unique phenomenon in nature. The male emits a melody of series of unique sounds that resemble musical instruments. The male may sing for close to 15 minutes, and when his song is complete, he usually repeats the song almost exactly the same for sometimes up to an hour. These marvelous songs will travel through the ocean for up to several kilometers, so this fascinating behavior may be heard while swimming, snorkeling, or diving in around Marino Ballena National Park, Corcovado National Park, and Drake Bay. During this two separate Costa Rica Whale watching seasons each year, you may see and interact with some of the various beautiful Whales and Dolphins that migrate to the warm waters around Drake Bay to calve their young. Many of the Humpback whales in the world are conceived or are born in the waters of the Osa Peninsula. Whale sightings are common in the waters of the Osa Region to Puerto Jimenez in the southern part of the peninsula. The peak Whale observation months are January thru April, followed closely by July thru October. Nutrient rich and warm Osa Peninsula waters also draw Sperm whales, Pilot whales, Bryde whales, Killer whales, and False killer whales. Large Dolphin schools with many species can be seen at play in the waters of the park, Drake Bay, the Golfo Dulce, and the near by continental shelf. Corcovado National Park: FORBES MAGAZINE HAS NAMED CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK AS ONE OF THE 'TOP 10 MOST BEAUTIFUL PARKS IN THE WORLD' The 41,000 hectare Corcovado National Park is known as the crown jewel of the Costa Rican national parks system. It protects 13 major eco-system habitats including a montane forest, which covers mo than half the park, a cloud forest, located in the highest region, richly populated by oak trees and tree ferns, swamp forests, flooded practically all year round, a yolillo forest, predominated by palms, a mangrove swamp, located on the estuaries of the Corcovado, Llorona, and Sirena Rivers, and a freshwater herbaceous swamp. The park lands are home to some 500 species of trees, an amount equivalent to a quarter of all the tree species in Costa Rica. Corcovado National Park contains approximately 140 species of mammals, an estimated 375 species of birds, 117 amphibian and reptile species, 40 types of freshwater fish, and it is estimated that there are some 6,000 types of insects. All four Costa Rican monkey species can be seen within the park, including the endangered squirrel monkey, white faced capuchin, mantled howler, and spider monkey. Other mammals include two and three-toed sloth, northern tamandua, the silky anteater, agoutis, tayras, and coatimundi. There is a large variety of bird species with trogons, tiger herons, guans, hawks, tanagers, parrots, toucans and two distinct macaw species. All four of the sea turtle species that nest in Costa Rica visit the beaches of Corcovado as well. Over 40 species of frogs including red-eyed tree, rain, glass, dink, and poison dart varieties, dozens of snakes including a variety of boas and the bushmaster, 28 species of lizards, and more than 100 species of butterflies call the Osa Peninsula home.
