The SpaceFern Creek is a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) & u-pick farm nestled in Yamhill County. The five acres includes a forest of evergreen, maple, and oak, nearly two acres of attractively designed vegetable gardens, orchard, and berry fields, and two charming (I know, really?) hen houses.
Guests stay in a 1250 square-foot two-bedroom apartment with 9-foot ceilings and good natural light. Unique features add interest to the space, like the kitchen and bath cabinets built from reclaimed lumber from a barn in Gaston. French doors off the master bedroom (king bed) lead to a private patio. A second bedroom with a queen bed is available for an additional $20/night if one person uses it, or $40/night for two. The open design kitchen, dining room, and living room make you feel like you’ve entered a place with room to breathe. Stay two nights or six and rest in the beauty and quiet of this small working farm.
Amenities include a private entrance, private courtyard with hot tub, flat-screen TV, wireless Internet, ironing and bath amenities. Organic, fair trade coffee and tea, organic oats, brown sugar and dried fruit are stocked in the fully equipped kitchen. Fresh eggs from our hens are often available for $5 a dozen or $3 for half a dozen, and fresh fruit and vegetables from Fern Creek can be purchased as seasonally available. We grow our food sustainably, solar panels supply much of our electricity, and we strive to live as gently as we can. To that end cleaning supplies and bath amenities are Earth-friendly. Guest AccessThe apartment is the lower level of our home and includes the adjacent courtyard and hot tub. Guests are welcome and encouraged to walk through the forest, check out the orchard and gardens, and sit in the gazebo down by the creek. Except for the hot tub and courtyard, other outdoor spaces are shared with others who come and go at Fern Creek, primarily CSA members who pick up crates of produce on Monday or Thursday afternoons from May through October. Mark and I live in a separate space upstairs, so you’ll hear us patter around when we’re home, and some evenings the smell of our homegrown popcorn may waft downstairs. Interaction with GuestsWe assume people choose Fern Creek partly because they are seeking the kind of quiet found in hiking, walking, reading, sitting, and wine tasting, and/or are attending events at George Fox University. Since we are a working farm we’re often around, and I'll pause what I’m doing to welcome you once I notice you have arrived. Otherwise, I’m available (text me) to answer questions and to offer ideas of what to do and where to go while you're here.
We've also added a pup to Fern Creek, who is now about 6 months old. Her name is Emma and she will grow up to be our farm dog. She loves attention, and is super friendly. Please do NOT let her inside (she is an outdoor dog only), and thank you for not feeding her extra treats! The NeighborhoodFern Creek is less than an hour from Portland and just over an hour from the Oregon coast. We are 10 minutes outside of Newberg, home to George Fox University (where we both have faculty appointments), and within 15 minutes of a number of very fine wineries and restaurants. Our immediate neighborhood is pastoral. A walk up Williamson or Dudley Road takes you by vineyards, horses, sheep, and cows. If walks are your thing (they are ours) we've put together a description of 4 jaunts you can take in the neighborhood, ranging from 1 to 10 miles. Our hope is that a stay at Fern Creek takes you away from the noise of your regular life and steeps you in sounds, smells, and sights of an older, more natural world. Other Things to NoteFor an extra touch pre-order (via email) a welcome basket or a picnic basket to take with you wine tasting. You can pay for it when you arrive or I can have it added onto your reservation. The Simply Unwind Basket includes a bottle of local Pinot Noir or Chardonnay (your choice) and assorted fair trade organic chocolate ($40); or choose All Things Local, which includes the above plus roasted hazelnuts, seasonal fruit, 1/2 dozen eggs from our hens, and a bundle of fresh herbs from Fern Creek's herb garden ($55). The Picnic Basket includes cheeses, hummus, crackers or bread, roasted hazelnuts, Deviled eggs, veggy sticks (from Fern Creek as seasonally available), and homemade cookies ($40).
