Armitage House is on the seafront and was probably built around 1830 at the same time as the nearby harbour was being developed. The house is comfortable and well proportioned. It was completely renovated in 2014 and has 2 large double rooms, 3 twin rooms, a bathroom, 2 shower rooms and a downstairs cloakroom. The large kitchen-dining room has an Aga while the sitting room has a wood burning stove. There is a separate utility room. You can walk in the Donard forest behind/above the house, Tollymore in Bryansford and Castlewellan (both about a 10 min drive) - along the river in Tollymore, round the lake in Castlewellan. Castlewellan also has a number of off-road bike trails and you can hire bikes from Life in the old stable block. There are walks through the sand dunes at Murlough (NT) Nature reserve – by the twelve arches bridge halfway between Newcastle and Dundrum. Bloody Bridge a few miles down the coast has paths – rock hopping and scrambling is great fun if it is dry. There is a smart Spa at the Slieve Donard Hotel and Soak Seaweed baths close to the house are well recommended. Burrendale Hotel on the Castlewellan Road has a pool and more modest spa. Golf – you may get a game at RCD though booking is essential. The best alternative is Ardglass about 20 miles away which has nice views back across the bay to the mountains.
