The NeighborhoodThings to do in the area: Stone Door: (10 minute drive to Rangers station/parking lot at most ~ 4 miles) From our house, return to Hwy 56 and turn left at the Grace Methodist church. – go about .5 miles on Hwy 56 just past the Methodist assembly and you will see signs pointing to Stone Door. Park at the ranger station, sign in…enjoy a 1 mile hike to the bluff! It is spectacular!! This easy trail affords one of the best views of the gulf area and ends at the Great Stone Door, an impressive crack in the rock bluff with a sloping floor that probably was used by Native Americans as a way in and out of Big Creek Gulf. Camping is available at the Stone Door Camp Area near the ranger station. Take the paved trail by the Stone Door Ranger's Station to Laurel Gulf Overlook. Continue following the rim of the gulf (with fantastic views) till you get to the 'Stone Door.' The Stone Door is a small split in the rock where you can reach the bottom of the cliff line. The South Cumberland State Park web site says: "The Stone Door was used for centuries by the Indians as a passage way from the top of the escarpment into the gorges below. Like a giant door left ajar, the crack is 10 feet wide and 100 feet deep. Go thru the “Door” and continue down to the base of the cliff for a great view of the cliff from below. Greeter Falls: From our house, return to Hwy 56 – turn right at the Grace Methodist church and go about ½ way back towards Altamont. There is a Brown sign denoting where to turn in for Greeter Falls. There is a parking area once you get down the gravel road…follow the blazed trail. This is a more challenging hike than Stone Door, but well worth the effort. Once you’ve seen the spectacular falls and are back on the trail, you may wish to go back by a different path toward Boardtree Falls, which will eventually loop back toward the trailhead. Beersheba Porcelain: (after 12 noon, please) From our house: return to Hwy 56 – turn left at the Grace Methodist church. – stay on Hwy 56 just past the Methodist assembly. Turn left on Dahlgren Ave. Take the 1st right onto Beersheba Lane. Shop is in 1st house, (fence around the yard). This is a home based business in the in the historical community of Beersheba Springs. Usually open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. most days. All porcelain pottery and wearable art jewelry are completely hand-made from their own porcelain recipe and fired in hand built kiln. Cumberland Caverns: about 35 minute drive. From our house turn left on Hwy 56 and go down the mountain towards McMinnville (about 17 miles). Turn right on Fairview Road and right on Hwy 8. Knowledgeable guides lead leisure tours every hour on the hour. No Reservations Required. The 1½ mile tour features incredible formations, a historic 1812 saltpeter mine, a beautiful waterfall and gleaming pools. University of the South: – about 40 minute drive (30 miles) From our house turn right on Hwy 56 for about 17 miles. In Tracy City, make a right on Hwy 41 North, then right on Hwy 41A at High Point restaurant in Monteagle. Cross I-24 and go a few more miles into University of the South at Sewanee. Known familiarly as “Sewanee” by its students, faculty, staff and friends, The University is located atop the Cumberland Plateau on a 13,000–acre Domain (as the campus and surrounding area is known). You guys, we are gearing up for holidays and we are super excited about it!!!! The Bird House is festive and getting dressed up Christmas! Bring your friends and family and come stay with us! Welcome to The Bird House and thank you in advance for considering us as your home away from home during your travels. If you'll come with me, I'll give you a quick tour of the facilities. Starting when you pull in, you'll notice the property is in the woods and is surrounded by trees and plenty of wildlife. Early mornings and evenings there are always deer around. There is a fire pit where you can enjoy roasting hot dogs and marshmallows or just sit around on the benches enjoying the crackle and pop of the burning logs from the firewood provided to When you walk up the steps onto your deck, you'll immediately see wrought iron patio furniture, and a 2 burner propane grill just in case you feel like cooking out one evening! Enter the house through the French doors and you're inside the fully equipped kitchen, side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher (there is dawn and finish detergent under the sink), glass topped stove, microwave, toaster, dishes, pots and pans and utensils, and my favorite, the coffee station!! Here you can brew an entire pot or use the Keurig to brew coffee, tea, or cocoa by the cup. You'll also find a fully furnished, complimentary, k-cup tree, cream, and raw sugar & stevia. There is also a snack free! There is a table and chairs and a bar with stools so there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the foods you prepare! You'll also notice a laundry closet in the kitchen with a washer and dryer and Tide detergent and hypoallergenic fabric softner sheets available (free). (And next to the Tide are a few citronella candles (free) in case you're enjoying your meal outdoors. For maximum effect, it's recommended you light these about one hour before you plan on spending time outdoors) Now, if you'll move with me into the living area, you'll find a very comfortable sectional sofa (plenty of space for everyone to sit), a coffee table, a 42" TV, Apple TV with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and many other apps, and high speed Wifi internet. However, if you're trying to disconnect, you'll also find books and board games in the cabinet. Down the hall, you'll find a coat rack, a map of Fall Creek Falls, and access to both bedrooms. The bedroom to your left is the Master bedroom. Here you'll find a queen size bed (that doesn't squeak) with a memory foam mattress, a walk in closet with hangers, and a full bathroom that provides clean towels & wash cloths, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion, and of course toilet paper. Inside the closet is a fold away cot if an extra bed is needed somewhere. It's pretty comfy too. There are sheets, pillows, and plush Queen blanket for it in the chest in the living room. Across the hall is the second bedroom. It too is a queen Serta mattress (that doesn't squeak), a closet with hangers, and a full bathroom with fresh clean towels & wash clothes, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. This bathroom is also accessible from the kitchen. If you forgot anything else, check under the sink, it just might be there. Every room is equipped with ceiling fans, lamps, & over head lighting. There are extra plush throws also for your comfort. This is a very quiet, family friendly, pet friendly environment. Come relax in the Bird House!

Do you really want to get away from it all and take a step back in time? Make your way to our cabin that overlooks part of the Savage Gulf State Natural Area, and it sits on the edge of a bluff which has a great 180 degree unobstructed views of the mountains and valley. There are family-friendly activities such as a basketball court, tennis court, and hiking. You’ll love our place because of the coziness and how rustic it is. Great for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids older than 2 years old), and medium size groups. Activities on the property include hiking, basketball, and tennis. The property sits on 15 acres and you do not see any other man made structures in the view from the back porch. The wood on the main part of this cabin comes from an old farm house that was built in the 1800s an hour away from Beersheba Springs, torn down, and reassembled at its current location. The large porches provide a wonderful outdoor living space that helps you soak in that 180 degree view of the mountains and valley below. There is even a couch swing so you can take a nap or enjoy the view with several of your closest friends or family. There is a working wood burning fire place that helps add even more charm to your stay. Outside of the basketball and tennis courts there is a game and puzzle closet to keep you busy on those cold and rainy days. There is also a life size jenga as well as a cornhole set located in the downstairs suite. This cabin has everything you need to truly relax and spend quality time with your closest friends and family. Local activities within a five mile radius include Greeter Falls and Stone Door which is part of Savage Gulf State Park. 4 Bedroom 3 Full Bathrooms Sleeps 12

Relax and renew on The Cumberland Plateau at Whimsy Tree! Nestled on a wooded four acres, overlooking a rippling creek, and situated in a gated (but rustic) community, this log cabin is truly your “home” during your stay, and not just a traditional rental. Whimsy Tree, named for the towering native hemlock that leans and sways “whimsically” at the corner of the side and front porch, is filled with love and fun! Experience the overlook of the adjacent Savage Gulf State Natural Area and hear Ranger Creek roaring 1900 feet below in the gorge. Hike to the headwaters of this sometimes vigorous mountain “creek”. There is plenty of walking to be done right from the cabin, but you might want to rent the cabin for 2 weeks, using the peaceful surroundings to write your thesis, as did one of our renters! The great room, which features 24’ ceilings and a wood burning fireplace, is perfect to relax or entertain. The master bedroom and the guest bedroom are located downstairs, and each has queen beds. The master bedroom has private access to the front porch. The loft upstairs has three twin beds, and each has a trundle under it, allowing the loft to sleep six. There are two full bathrooms, one on each floor. The kitchen is fully equipped. The cabin offers Wi-Fi, cable, DVD players upstairs and down, with a nice collection of movies for all ages. The cabin is stocked with games and puzzles, including a mini shuffle board game and table top poker. Outside, enjoy a basketball court, fire pit, tree house for the kids, and of course hiking. The red shed offers a place for crafts, and houses bird seed for the number of feeders on the property. There is also a full size bed upstairs! The shed does have a small half bathroom. Whimsy Tree has been a family centered getaway since 2007. It is centrally located to many wonders of nature. Some of our favorites are located within The South Cumberland State Recreation Area, including Stone Door, The Blue Hole (a great swimming hole), Greeter Falls, Foster Falls, Fiery Gizzard Trail, and Grundy Lakes (with historic coke ovens) for swimming, paddling, walking and picnicking. This recreation area offers even more sites for hiking, backpacking, nature study, camping, rock climbing and repelling. Off the plateau, check out Cumberland Caverns, home of Bluegrass Underground. Take a day trip to raft the Ocoee, or visit one of several festivals in Beersheba, Ketner’s Mill, and Bonnaroo in Manchester, just to name a few. Sewanee and The University of The South offer breathtaking views and quaint little restaurants and shops. Also near that location is the Mountain Goat Trail for bicycling. Canoe the Sequatchie. Golfers can enjoy the Sewanee Golf Course. Something fun to do for all ! Keywords: Mountain home; Retreat; Fireplace, Hiking, Backpacking, Cabin
