This lovely historic home was built in 1902 when the Rich Lumber Company built a mill town in this charming hamlet. This cottage was originally a mill worker boarding house, then later converted into a family owned home purchased by John T. Olsen from Sweden. The cottage is made out of original hemlock and has two bedrooms, one bath with a claw foot tub/shower, a cozy family room with a wood pellet stove, a morning room, a large enclosed porch, full kitchen, breakfast bar and dining area. Two kayaks and two bicycles are included with the cottage available for your use. The home still has many of the original antique furnishings including the icebox that the Olsen family stored their cow milk in, to sell to the townspeople of Wanakena. Enjoy your morning coffee in front of the wood pellet stove in the cozy living room or in an Adirondack chair on the large wrap-around, screened-in porch surrounded by the aroma of balsam firs. Walk one block to the quaint village center to shop at the Wanakena General Store or to catch a summer concert in the gazebo. Go for a swim or launch the house kayaks at the public beach. Walk to the tennis courts, basketball court or playground. Take a self-guided walking tour of Wanakena, courtesy of the Wanakena Historical Association. Enjoy a delicious meal at the local favorite Pine Cone Restaurant overlooking the river. Take advantage of abundant opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, and exploring, as well as easy day trips to visit the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, or the tourist shops in Lake Placid and the High Peaks Region. ALTHOUGH THIS PROPERTY SLEEPS 4, WE HAVE TWO AIR MATTRESSES AND WILL SLEEP 6 PEOPLE EASILY. The town of Wanakena has a public beach area for swimming in the Oswegatchie river. The river feeds into Cranberry lake which is know for its fishing. You will find the Wanakena General Store a block down the street with many staples and a fun visit anyway. The town has a self guided historical tour that is a must. There is a public tennis court and basketball hoop at the town playground area. There are several hiking trails walking distance from the cottage. Also, the Presbyterian Church is a few houses down the street!

The SpaceThis is our camp. It's been in our family since my grandparents bought it in 1965. It's a simple cabin, cozy and fun. The 2 bedrooms have curtains instead of doors. The bathroom is small but clean, with a new water-saving toilet. To take a shower, you walk outside and down a short path to the back shed. We store tools in the shed, but they're on one side behind curtains. There's a nice soft area rug in front of the shower, which is a newer fiberglass unit, and plenty of room. On cool days you can warm up the room with a small space heater. Across the road is a large open boathouse. One boat slip available for your use. There's a 25'x25' deck on top, with gorgeous views of the lake. Table with umbrella and 4 chairs. The chairs are stored below, inside the boathouse. Guest AccessThis is a single-family camp. You'll have the entire place to yourself. Interaction with GuestsFeel free to call me any time. My phone number will be posted on a bulletin board across from the fridge. The NeighborhoodThe camp is near other camps. The neighboring properties are mostly second homes, where the owners come up to enjoy vacation time near the lake. Throughout the summer, especially on weekends, the area is busy and festive. Generally when kids are in school - early in the year or after Labor Day, it's amazing how quiet and peaceful it is. Getting AroundRoom for 3 cars across the road, in front of the boathouse. Other Things to NoteWe provide pillows and blankets. You provide sheets and towels.

The SpaceOur vintage guest cottage has a village and wilderness location on the western arm of Cranberry Lake where the Oswegatchie River flows into the lake. Located on a point across from the historic village of Wanakena, it is a visual favorite for visitors touring the village on shore or by boat. From spring ephemerals to autumn color, this secluded village is an attractive location for your Adirondack vacation. The comfortable 2 bedroom cottage sleeps 4, with two additional daybeds. It has one full bath, a cozy living room, and a very nicely equipped kitchen with dining area. The ample waterfront sitting porch has views down to the dock and across the flow to a wooded shoreline and the village. Great for small group or family vacations. Boats available Guest AccessThere is parking close to the house, a dock suitable for swimming and mooring a boat, a fire ring and grill, and a canoe available for your use. The house has a washer and dryer. Interaction with GuestsWe will greet our guests and be available for any questions about the area. We will be present during our guests stay as our own home is close by. Still plenty of privacy. The NeighborhoodThe village of Wanakena is located inside the Adirondack Park on the northwest slope of the mountains near State Route 3 about 1 1/2 hours east of Watertown NY, and 1 hour west of the Saranac Lakes. The 1 mile access road off Rt. 3 provides seclusion and separation from road noise. The village was founded as a logging center in 1902, and has maintained its turn of the century character. There is a sense of community among the seasonal and full-time residents fostered by the general store, rustic restaurant, post office, church, summer concert series, and other community events. Four trailheads within a brief walk of the cottage provide access to the Five Ponds Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the eastern US. A description of the Cranberry Lake Region including the Five Ponds trail system can be found on the following websites (replace * with . ) cranberrylake50*org www*dec*ny*gov/lands/34719*html www*dec*ny*gov/lands/34715*html These trails provide opportunities for short hikes of a few miles, longer day hikes, and multiday hiking-camping. Many of them have destinations overlooking wild lake shoreline, and the upper Oswegatchie River. Wanakena’s location on the western flow provides boat access to Cranberry Lake, one of the largest of the remote Adirondack lakes with its 55 miles of shoreline, about 85 percent of which is forest preserve. Along this wild shoreline is an extensive series of boat-access campsites, and trailheads leading into the wilderness. The NYS Ranger School, located down the Wanakena Flow a mile away, has an extensive system of forest roads and trails good for walking and biking. A trailhead provides access to the Peavine Creek trail system, another opportunity for hiking and more technical mountain biking. A short drive from Wanakena takes you to a launch point on the Oswegatchie River above the village, from where you can paddle upstream (no motor boats!) more than 15 miles as the river makes serpentine turns through marshlands and forested shoreline. Campsites provide opportunity for an overnight stay. Town resources: Some supplies are available from the general store in Wanakena. The village of Star Lake 6 miles away has a small supermarket, a bank, a gas station with convenience store, several restaurants, a pharmacy, a small but well equipped medical clinic/hospital, and a builders supply. Getting AroundNo public transportation. No traffic lights within 50 miles. Easy drive to Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, the Wild Center (Tupper Lake), the Adirondack Museum (Blue Mountain Lake), and many of the recently opened wilderness areas in the park. Other Things to NoteMay-June is the season for Spring ephemeral flowers. Trillium and Ladies Slipper will be blooming. Ask us about which trails to take for this springtime show in the woods. July-August is high season for swimming and boating. Excellent swimming right off the dock in front of the cottage. Late August - mid October is for us the best season for hiking, since it's a little cooler. The leaves start to turn by mid September, and by the end of the month the woods are a blaze of color. The cottage is most accommodating to 4 people, but could sleep an additional two family members in daybeds on the porch and in the living room. A canoe and day kayaks are available for your use. Logs cut to length are provided for use in the fire ring.
