The SpaceWe live in a geodesic dome on a quiet mountainside in Eagle River. The home is architecturally interesting, eco-friendly and energy-efficient. It has lots of natural light, open living spaces, and nooks and crannies for reading, puzzles, board games, or quiet activities. We are a mile drive/walk from the Mount Baldy trailhead, 5 minutes from downtown Eagle River, and 20 minutes from downtown Anchorage. Guest AccessThis listing is for a private bedroom (queen-sized) and bath with a tub/shower and double sinks on the main floor of the dome. The main floor has a washer/dryer, kitchen, living room, dining room, sun porch, and eat-in kitchen. Downstairs, we have another available airbnb guest bedroom and bath (listed separately), another living room, and a full kitchen. Guests are welcome to use any of these common spaces on the main and bottom floor. The large driveway has parking space for multiple vehicles and RVs. The home would be a good option for two couples traveling together. We have WiFi a large television on each floor with cable TV and a large selection of DVDs. Interaction with GuestsPlease let us know what works for you as far as interaction. If you want suggestions for hikes, restaurants, or things to do, let us know! If you would like to just relax on your own, we won't disturb you. The house has quiet and common spaces, and we figure that if you're in one of the common areas, you're up for conversation. We live in the home and use the kitchen and main floor living room, so you’ll see us in the house and working in our offices. We sometimes have additional airbnb guests in the downstairs apartment, so you may meet some additional travelers as well. Our dog Chaco is a friendly border collie who stays in the house all day. She seldom goes downstairs or into the bedrooms (unless invited), and she will leave you alone if you wish, but if you like dogs, she will give you all of the attention you could possibly desire. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is quiet with natural vegetation. All of the homes are custom and the lots are large, so the neighborhood provides a feeling of solitude. The view from the top of our mountain (1 mile drive/walk) is one of the best in Anchorage – you can see Cook Inlet, downtown Anchorage, and the Talkeetna Range. On a clear day, it gives you a beautiful view of Denali. We are close to several nice hikes for a range of ability levels. Getting AroundThough there are taxi and bus services in Eagle River, they are very limited, and you do need a car to access our home. Because we live on a mountain, snow tires are recommended in the winter months. Our driveway provides ample space for RV parking. Other Things to NoteWe collect rocks, minerals, fossils, antiques, and the house has an eclectic style.

The SpaceWe live in Alaska's only Bioshelter. This house, built as a research and development facility in 1985 by environmental engineer Bob Crosby, was recognized for its commitment to earth-friendly practices with the 1987 Energy Innovation Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. Called a bioshelter, it was built entirely from eco-friendly and sustainable materials available at the time and is still on the cutting edge of sustainable living practices. We continue to collect data for the builder. Designed to bring nature indoors, the 42 foot front of the house is a solarium, naturally warmed by the midnight sun and the ground’s thermal mass. It is complete with wetlands, a koi pond, a babbling brook and a small waterfall. We compost kitchen scraps in our enclosed worm farm to create a rich fertilizer for our gardens. Because the house is buried into the mountain, the indoor climate is easily controlled: warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Rainwater is collected on the roof for use in the house, the greenhouse as well as the rooftop garden. We treat our water and reuse it so that we only spend 2 gallons a day per person, whereas the typical American house spends 2-5 gallons of clean water every time they flush their toilet and about 75 gallons per person per day. Our koi check the water for us, so that we are sure we can reuse it. If they die, we stop using the water immediately and try to figure out what we added to our system to make that happen. Our toilets are composting toilets which we empty every six months. One is a purchased biolet and the other is an indoor composter which collects all of our newspaper, cardboard, left-overs, as well as pruned leaves and grass from the solarium. The bioshelter is located in the Chugach Mountains, so that during the winter we have no sun for about six weeks. We are currently pricing solar systems to see if—even without sun for six weeks, it would be economically feasible for us. Chugach State Park and just 2.5 miles from the Eagle River Nature Center. We ask that you not leave food in your car and be very bear aware during your stay. If you stay a second night, it's only $100 because you won't need the tour again! ;-)If you'd like to add extra people, let us know. Each extra person is $20/night. We have 2 trundle beds in the library and there's always floor space. Guest AccessGuests have access to the shared bathroom, shower, composting toilet. There's a microwave in the room. There is a TV with a lot of DVDs available to watch, but no regular TV. There is wireless internet and a printer. NOTE: You must use our toothpaste, shampoo, etc. so as not to disturb the house's ecosystem. Interaction with GuestsGuests will need a tour of the house to get acquainted with living in a living house and how it works, as well as the greenhouse, worm farm, etc. Really, this is more of a hostel----we won't treat you like guests, really. You are more than welcome to hang out and weed the garden, or water the tomatoes. :-) Breakfast is served either in your room or downstairs in the solarium. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood has its own (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) "critter watch" page so we can be aware of which bears are where, or which moose have calves, or which birds are injured, etc. The Eagle River Nature Center is just 2.5 miles away and it offers all sorts of hiking. Again---bring your best singing voice to make sure the animals know where you are and can go around you. (Bear spray is also required--please bring some) Getting AroundYou must have your own transportation. The best activity to do out here is hike/ski. This is my neighbor's blog about hiking. It gives you lots of details and pictures about where you can hike and the level of difficulty. (URL HIDDEN) Other Things to NoteCurt and Cindee are both life long Alaskans and speak fluent German (although it's kinda rusty).

The SpaceThe ceilings are all at least 10ft for those who feel claustrophobic. Very kid friendly, we can leave out anything you need for kids or tuck them away depending on your needs. We do have a cat who is very kid friendly and more like a dog than a cat, she stays outside mostly during the summer though. Guest AccessYou will have access to all of the spaces listed in the photographs I also have a craft room next to the kitchen that has the washer and dryer attached to it. It can easily fit another bed in it. We will lock the garage and workshop though. Interaction with GuestsWe will only be a phone call or text away if you need anything or help planning your trip! The NeighborhoodWe are a couple stone throws from the ocean and from the mountains both are fun to explore (stay out of the mud by the ocean though...seriously tourist die in it every year!) We can help you plan out a vaca that is perfect for you and your crew! Getting AroundWe have more parking than you will ever need. There is a great train station in Anchorage to all the major sight seeing tours. The bus system here is not really worth mentioning for getting around on. Renting a car is highly recommended! Other Things to NoteWe are just outside of the 'city' if you can call Anchorage that. The Denali National park and Matanuska Glacier are North of us, the fishing and sight seeing charters are South of us. And hiking all around our house. No matter where you stay in Alaska you will have to drive to anything you want to see which makes this a great place to rest in between adventures.

The SpaceWe live in a three-story house which, in true Alaskan fashion, I built myself with the help of my then-13-year old son. If you are interested to know what is involved in such a project, I’ll be happy to show all the unique features of our house and share with you the story behind building it. Guest AccessYour room is on the second floor. The room has a double-size bed (a longer one: 54"*80"), and there is possible to fit a mattress or folding bed for a third person. Also on the second floor there is a nice open area with big windows on both sides of the house – the ideal place to read or just relax. Enjoy the view of the mountains from both inside the house and the two large decks. A simple breakfast – yogurt, cereal, cottage cheese, bread, coffee or tea – is included, and you are welcome to use the kitchen for preparing more elaborate breakfast and also lunch and dinner. We don't provide WiFi, but you can always access the internet from our computer if you need. Washer and dryer are free. Interaction with GuestsHaving lived here for 15 years, we know all the great outdoor places around and will be glad to share our knowledge. My wife Yulia likes mushroom/berry-picking and can, during the right season, show you bountiful places for both. I love kayaking, and can help you with getting a couple of kayaks for a kayaking trip on neighboring lake. We have two dogs. They are very friendly, so if you like dogs, you are welcome to interact with them. If not - the dogs will understand… In any case, they are not allowed at the second floor, where your room is. The NeighborhoodWe are located 25 minutes from Anchorage (10 minutes from downtown Eagle River). We live in a valley among beautiful mountains. There is a forest just half a mile from the house, with numerous trails: to the waterfall on South Fork, to the confluence of South Fork and Eagle River, etc. Many other wonderful mountains and lakes are a short driving distance from us. Getting AroundYou will need a car - there is no public transportation near the house. In the winter 4WD or AWD is advisable, Front Wheel Drive is OK most of the time, Rear Wheel Drive can get you in trouble on an icy day. We have plenty of parking space in the yard, even for an RV. Other Things to NoteI am a pianist and practice a couple of hours almost every day. I don’t like to disturb people (as the saying goes, “music is an impolite art”), so I’ll work around your schedule, practicing when you are not at home. But if you plan to stay here all day – well, you will hear me… I do think you’ll enjoy it!
