Farm building formerly used for making maple syrup is under renovation. If you choose to draw or paint, work table and wall space available. Owner is landscape oil painter with regional reputation. Painting, drawing, and lithographs decorate the studio, dining area, sleeping loft. Other artists in his collection also represented. You are welcome in work in the studio area if you'd like.
Space in use as home, artist's studio, retreat. No TV or audio equipment; weather reports can be found on a small radio in kitchen. No internet access. No air conditioning.
Important: Studio is a farm building under renovation. Kitchen and bathroom construction in progress. Partially open ceiling in both spaces, insulation and wiring visible in kitchen. All fixtures and equipment work; wiring is safe, installed by licensed electrician. The kitchen is serviceable for travelers preparing straightforward meals. Interior and exterior spaces for dining are comfortable and relaxing.
Pots, utensils available for gas stove top cooking. Gas oven not operable but there is a good counter-top convection oven, electric, in which we bake the apple pie that we leave for your enjoyment.
There is no air-conditioning. Space cooled by floor fans in summer. In cool weather, space heated by LP gas and by wood stove. Guest AccessGuests who want to hike - snowshoe, Xcntry in winter - should wear layered, rugged clothing and suitable shoes. Trails are not marked except by tractor and small all-terrain vehicle use.
Guests should bring Approved Firewood, i.e. free of invasive pests like Emerald Ash Borer or Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Stewarts gas stations provide treated inspected for use. Seasoned firewood and kindling occurs naturally in woods just feet from the Saphouse Studio; please collect a supply for your use. Interaction with GuestsGuests welcomed by owner or a greeter to answer questions and instruct in use of wood stove and LP (liquid propane ) heating units, one in studio, one in bathroom. House manual emailed to all who make reservations. Included are instructions for self check-in for late arrivals. Please read House Manual for using wood stove. The NeighborhoodThe natural beauty, relative isolation on the dead-end road, and quietness of the neighborhood are highly valued by the hosts and other persons who live on the one mile road. Road maintenance excellent, by 7am after a 12" snow previous night. Sometimes there will be XCntry trails depending ....

Cooperstown, a pleasant 45 min. drive north, is a great destination. Ommegang Brewery, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmer's Museum, Baseball Hall of Fame. And handsome Otsego Lake, 7 mi. + long.
Delhi and Andes, nearby mountain towns, have galleries and shopping and a about 30 minutes away via NY28. Getting AroundSeveral guide books, maps available inside Saphouse Studio. USGS map for locale. Other Things to NoteWinter guests will want instruction in using the Jotul wood stove, if they're not familiar with wood burning stoves. Firewood and some kindling wood provided. Also matches and newspapers to ignite a fire. If you've never operated an interior wood stove you should look up basics on the internet or from a printed source.
