The SpaceThis is a lovely, quiet double room in a traditional Victorian London terrace home, full of period touches. Light, airy and quiet - the room is at the back of the house and looks over the garden. The double bed is new, with a firm memory foam mattress - and the new hanging wardrobe has plenty of room to hang up/ store your clothes. From the room, floor-length windows lead directly onto a flat roof, creating a private outdoor area that only guests in the room have access to, overlooking the garden. A table and two chairs is available for this area - please just ask for this with your booking request. High speed WIFI access is free of charge and works throughout the house, just not the garden. Guests are welcome to use all shared rooms in the house (lounge, dining area, kitchen, etc.) and sit in the garden. There is also a private WC for you opposite the bedroom. We are a couple with no kids, who tend to be work or out and about, exploring the local pubs or walking our dog. We think it best to give our guests space and independence to come and go as they choose - but are happy to offer advice on the area or other information - just ask. While Barnes is only a short train ride away from London Waterloo and the major tourist attractions, it has plenty to offer visitors - traditional pubs and boutique shops, a village green, walks by the Thames and the stunning scenery of Richmond Park within walking distance. It's a lovely quaint area that many Londoners love and, if you're from overseas, will give you a lovely introduction to a quieter side of London life. Car parking is available in local streets - no permit needed. When it comes to public transport, there are many options. Both Barnes and Barnes Bridge rail stations are under a 15 minute walk, with trains leaving every quarter of an hour for London Waterloo (journey of 20-25 minutes). In addition to the trains, a host of buses leave from a bus stop a 5 minute walk away - with buses direct to Hammersmith, Putney, Clapham and Wimbledon. Happy to help you plan journeys - just ask! Not suitable for those with pet allergies or wanting to bring a pet. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to use all shared rooms in the house (lounge, dining area, kitchen, etc.) and sit in the garden. Thing of the past Cowley Road is three bedroom, two bathroom home in leafy Barnes. This area is famous for its vast array of beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings, so simply wandering the streets is an aesthetic indulgence. Visit the nearby sleepy Thames before swinging by picturesque Barnes Village, with its weekly Farmers market. There's nowhere else in the city that feels quite so much like the countryside, though the train goes straight to the city. So wander home over the idyllic village green for a glass of wine on the decked terrace. Tender age Your host is a charity director who’s devoted to her work. When she winds down she loves to entertain friends over dinner in her sociably-set-up home, or indulge in the local culinary scene. In particular she likes Time Out’s favourite London tea shop, Orange Pekoe, and The Depot, a nearby riverside restaurant. Charm offensive Be beguiled by Cowley Road’s blend of old and new as soon as you step into the hallway. Shimmy into the sitting room, which exudes an atmosphere of warmth, and get lost on one of the large, cream sofas. Make the most of the light which pours in through the wooden sash window, or draw the curtains for a film on the large, flat screen TV. A wide collection of books adds to this room’s air of distinction, while over in the kitchen, an impressive dining area dominates, complete with sweetly hanging lamps. Stepping outside, soak up the suburban air from the kitchen terrace, or head down to the shared garden patio. If you’re feeling weary, pick a bedroom and get comfortable. There’s a gentle single with an antique chest and regal drapes, or a girlish double with pink peony wallpaper and a wall of mirrors. Everybody smile The Thames laps at the end of the road, sunshine fills pastel-painted rooms, and the garden echoes with children’s laughter. There’s a country charm to First Avenue, a laid-back sense of fun unsullied by the demands of real life. Patchwork, wooden toys and heritage textiles welcome you home, so much so that you may never want to leave. But when you do, be sure to take some bread for the ducks. Cross the river to Dukes Meadows for green turf and a weekly famers’ market, or head down into Barnes village, where you’ve independent grocers, lovely restaurants and outrageously cute pubs. Home from home London’s calling, but so too are England’s green fields and skies of soaring swallows. And here at Vicarage Gardens you can have both. Calm and sweet, this home combines grand architecture with a very particular snugness. You’ve original windows and delicate cornicing, shelves of books and a mossy terraced garden. Barnes village, with its scrumptious cafés and venerable pubs, is only a walk away and so too is Richmond Park, where the red deer roam free. Feed the gulls on the Thames then return home to buttered crumpets by the open fire. Village people Your hosts have led glamorous lives as a label manager for an international record company and as a key link in the network of a global advertising agency. They’re now retired and spend half their time at Vicarage Gardens, the other half at their home near the Cognac region. Ivy clad Out in the garden, silver-tipped ivy climbs the fence and there’s a table for two to enjoy coffee and a croissant. Inside, you’ll spot an impressive array of Cognac posters, evidence of your hosts’ years in France, and a collection of hand-turned wood. The walls are soothingly plain in tones of mushroom and cream, while the soft fabrics showcase a range of classic British prints, from stripes through to paisley. The kitchen is modern in brushed chrome, while the dining room has a more rustic feel with white-washed, vintage chairs. And the bedroom is an idyllic nest, shaded in duck egg blue, with another original fireplace and a view out into the garden. Crystal clear With scenic Richmond Park and bustling independent coffee shops, this area certainly shines bright. And York Avenue II’s interior follows suit. Against pale-hued walls the furnishings appear gloriously glossy – from the metallic artworks to the kitchen’s black marble countertops and cloud-white dining chairs. Even the dusky antique furniture and textured silk curtains have an understated gleam. With seats for eight beneath the skylights you might linger long into the evening around the glass dining table, before settling on the generous corner sofa – with its own views of the wide garden. Sharp thinkers Your hosts, an events organiser and furniture maker, drew on their joint creative skills when redesigning their London home. They’ve worked hard to turn their idea into a reality: an inviting home for them and their young family. Light up At first glance you’ll notice this home’s decadent proportions, but there are also plenty of sparkling details. The drawing room is elegant with a striped velvet sofa, and there’s a collection of books and ornaments nestling in the fireplace’s alcove. Upstairs, the bedrooms each have their own imaginative embellishments – from the sweet birdcage stencil in the single bedroom to the double room’s exotic collection of masks. But the master bedroom is simply styled, with dark wooden furniture brightened by a curving bay window. Head outside to the peaceful garden, where there’s a collection of wicker armchairs to rest atop. Or go beyond the leafy walls in search of Richmond’s buzzing boutiques and cafés, or the verdant acres of Richmond Park – you won't need to search hard for the latter, which is just a short walk away. Additional amenities include: iron & ironing board, hob, toiletries, coffee machine, cafetiere, music player, hairdryer, onefinestay iphone.
