The Spaceplease go to are website GOLDENTREEHOSTEL to book your stay with us . Thank you safe travel. Golden Tree Hostel is in the landmark Donohue House (1890), listed on the National Historic Registry. The house has both architectural and cultural significance. Michael Donohue built the house seven years after his arrival on Orcas Island. The dwelling was constructed using an Upright-and-Wing building form, a late example of the Greek Revival style. Mr. Donohue used his skills to erect many other buildings on the island, including the Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1885), also listed on the Registry. The house sits on the last remaining part of a 180 acre homestead. The farm was a leading supplier of apples and milk from the island. Some of the original orchard is still present on this and neighboring properties, still producing delicious apples. The Donohues’ only surviving son, Harry, lived in the house with his wife Jean Donohue (Gibson) until their respective passings in 1947 and 1958. The house then passed through many hands before arriving in ours. We spent over two years renovating every building on the property, to create a unique hostel experience. Taking our combined years as both builders and artists, we transformed a tired building into a vibrant home. The house is located just a 10 minute stroll to both Eastsound, the commercial center of the island, and North Beach, a great place to watch a summer sunset, or drop some kayaks in the water. We built a sauna and put in a hot tub, to help you relax after a day of hiking or biking around the island. You can shoot a game of pool with a fellow traveler, or find a quiet spot on one of the porches. We hope to have created a spot where travelers can meet and connect with each other and with local residents. There’s a whole lot to do on the property and even more to do around the island. We hope that you enjoy your stay with us.

The SpaceThe Lodge is a 2 story, 2,900 sq. ft. European Style Guest House. There are 5 private rooms with beds to sleep 15 people. We offer 4 Standard Rooms and 1 Deluxe Suite. The 4 rooms share 3 common baths, and the Deluxe Suite has a private bath and sitting area. The Lodge on Orcas Island is an ideal venue for receptions, reunions, meetings, seminars and retreats. Plan to take advantage of the always spotless, fully equipped kitchen. You will find oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, numerous spices, dish soap, foil, wrap, wax paper, pots and pans, plates, dishes, flatware, glasses, sharp cooking knives and various utensils. At the Lodge we endorse slow living, voluntary simplicity and a love and respect for nature. For instance, instead of a garbage disposal you'll find a compost bucket. We got rid of the microwave and put in a toaster oven. Rather than mind numbing televisions we have four mind stimulating aquariums. So rather than electronic blather, the sounds you can expect to hear are the trickling of water, bird song, the breeze whispering through the trees, nocturnes by Chopin, ballads by Diana Krall. Our aesthetic is informed by the American Arts and Crafts movement. Though not a museum, you may notice many craftsman inspired touches throughout the house and adjoining property. We emphasize cleanliness. Allergy sufferers, the chemically sensitive and those who simply don't care to be assaulted by caustic fragrances will appreciate that we use only naturally scented soaps and cleansers for the laundry and household. The house always smells fresh and clean. We know how complicated it's gotten to take some toiletries along. So In the baths we provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste. Brands currently featured are Dr. Bronners or Trader Joe's. The Lodge is recognized by Washington State as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary. Nature lovers will enjoy basking in their soothing song as the resident birds gather at our baths and feeders. The grounds are green and manicured and the fruit orchard boasts 23 trees. Under the towering conifers you'll find a huge log picnic table, complementary charcoal barbecues and outdoor lounge furniture. If it is respite you are seeking, you've come to the right place. Put your ambitions aside and head for one of the several Pawley’s Island Presidential cotton rope hammocks hanging beneath the Western Red Cedars. Come………… study the art of the hammock. Guest AccessYou will have full access to the entire house. Most notably the aquarium lounge, 2nd story lanai, lawn and gardens with hammocks and swings, fully equipped kitchen. We are situated on one acre of lush and manicured gardens. Interaction with GuestsThe office for The Lodge is on the second story just off the living room. I come and go throughout the day. I am available to answer questions about local services and attractions and to help in any way. If my input is not needed or desired then I leave my guests in peace and seek to be as unobtrusive as possible. Getting AroundWe have scads of free on-site parking. There are 2 taxi services and a car rental available. New Orcas Taxi, ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Terry Mullen Taxi, ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Orcas Island Rent A Car, ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) We are approximately 1 mile from the airport. If you arrive by air we'll be happy to give you a ride to the Lodge. Other Things to NoteThe Lodge is ideally suited to accommodating large groups: Family reunions, seminars, receptions, meetings and retreats. Any situation that calls for a large number of people wanting to stay in a cozy, homelike environment.

We are only one mile from shops and restaurants - 1/4 mile from North Beach. We have two rooms with Queen sized beds with Private Bathrooms, Lovely garden Hot Tub, Large Deck, Porch, and Living Room with Huge wood burning Fireplace. Based on 1 or 2 guests, *An additional guest could be added to 1 of the Queen rooms for an additional $35 + tax, but that room might not be available. We serve a full 3 course organic breakfast with many foods and ingredients grown right here on Orcas. Central Location in Eastsound, in the very center of the island, one mile from the shops and restaurants. Let us know if you can't find the dates that you need. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the living room, library, dining room porch and deck, back garden, hot tub, everything except our personal area and the kitchen. Check-in after 2:30PM. We don’t require you to check-in by a certain time. Please feel free to arrive at any time after 2:30 pm. If we happen to be out running errands, hiking, or otherwise enjoying the island, we will leave a note and room key for you. Please make yourself at home. Tea and cocoa are always available. You can sign up for a time in the hot tub, curl up with a book from our library, relax in the inn and gardens, or go explore the island. Orcas Island is an easy going/low crime place, but please don't leave super valuable items unattended. We don't have a safe and don't want to be responsible for your grandmother's brooch. Check-out by 11:00AM please. Interaction with GuestsWe generally spend time with our guests when they check in, perhaps in the evening if a conversation just naturally happens while enjoying a fire or whatnot, and for a nice while at & after breakfast if you want to hang out with us. But, if you have places to go and things to do, that's fine, too. The NeighborhoodIt is a real neighborhood where we know each other, and everyone is friendly. We are close to the beach, walking and hiking trails, the marina, downtown Eastsound, and right down the road from the performing arts center. Getting AroundWe can accommodate most vehicle types. 2 or 4 wheels are the best transit, but it is easy to walk the mile into Eastsound and to a couple of different beaches. We do it all the time. - If you do decide to come on foot, there is a shuttle in the summer and 3 taxi cab companies year around. Other Things to NoteWe have another listing for room with a Queen bed/private bathroom

The cabin is well appointed with everything you need for four adults plus. King-size bed in bedroom, full-bed in sleeping niche, plus two fold out mattresses for kids, with bedding for all. Guest AccessWander the acreage of meadow and forest, relax in the wood fired hot-tub and watch for deer and eagles. A private road and five acres ensures complete privacy and quiet. Or just curl up on the cozy leather couch with a novel. There are games, puzzles and books, but no TV or landline. Cell phone reception is usually good at the cabin. From the living room and large deck, you can see from Mount Constitution and the Olympic range to the south, Turtleback Mountain, the water and the lights of Victoria and Sydney to the west. Enjoy hiking Mount Constitution (there is a trail head 1000 feet from the cabin), shopping just four miles away in Eastsound Village, and all that lovely Orcas Island has to offer. The village has many great restaurants and cafes, one of the state’s best bookstores and an outdoor Saturday market featuring local organic food and artisan crafts. There are beaches to walk, sea kayaks, mopeds and mountain bikes to rent; go on whale-watching tours, and see lots of wildlife you won’t see on the mainland. Interaction with GuestsWe will be happy to share our personal favorites with you and answer any questions you may have. My husband Christian is an architect and I am an artist. We've enjoyed designing a simple retreat in this unspoiled place, and hope you will be moved by the experience of being here for a time. We are always available for questions during your stay. Getting AroundA reservation is needed for the ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island. Please see the Washington State Ferries website to make your reservations. There is a taxi service on the island but a car is needed to truly enjoy all there is to offer on Orcas. Other Things to NoteWith the cabin at 1200 feet, up a good, but in some places steep, mountain road; during the winter months there is a possibility of snow or ice on the road. We strongly recommend having chains just in case you need them. We will consider shorter rentals during the week or if there is a two day gap in the calendar. Please contact us!

Property Reviews from 2012 and 2011: Brian T. Very Comfortable Home Review Submitted: August 7, 2012 Date of Stay: July 2012 We had a great stay at this house on Orcas. Location of the house is perfect, close walking distance to Eastsound. The house is well stocked with kitchen item and products, so you don't have to go buy all those accessories like condiments, sugar, paper towels, etc. Good experience, would rent here again. Fantastic home and awesome location! Review Submitted: June 11, 2012 Date of Stay: June 2012 This was a great house to accomodate my fairly large group. It was spacious and clean, and had great furniture and everything was organized. They included paper product, trash bags, condiments, etc., and the kitchen was fully loaded with cooking items like pots and pans. As well, the appliances were top of the line, there was a cool game room in the basement with board games like Cranium and Apples to Apples, and there's an iPod dock + some movies. We had a great time on Orcas taking mopeds to the top of Mt. Constitution, hiking around the trails in Moran State Park, and enjoying the restaurants of Eastsound. Kari's daughter recommended the New Leaf as a breakfast place, and it was so great we ate there two days in a row. Thanks! Can't say enough about this perfect vacation home! Review Submitted: August 23, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011 We stayed in this beautiful home in early August and we were very happy with it. There was plenty of room for my husband and I, our children, and our extended family members. The home was very neat and clean, decorated nicely, and very functional. It was a short walk to the cute shops and restaurants of Eastsound. The owner was helpful and easy to work with. We had a great experience and would highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone! Guest AccessEntire home except for the garage Interaction with GuestsWe are residents of Orcas and will be available during your stay. The SpaceOrcas Island - Lovely, sunny, warm, furnished and fully self contained writers lair with large deck, beach access, gardens, gorgeous view of ocean waters and Mount Baker. The Loft has a Full size (as opposed to a "Queen size) bed with firm mattress/soft topper. Large window seat with sea and garden view out front. K There is a small kitchen, pantry, writing desk, easy chair, dining table, bathroom with shower, skylight at the roof peak and over the bed for star gazing. No smoking in the house or on the property. Internet service is pretty poor at this spot, but free and good in town at the library and Enzo's Cafe. Please do not ask to bring your dogs or cats along as we cannot accommodate more than we already have. The resident cat "Zumi" is the official host and greatly enjoys visiting and relaxing with the guests, so if you are allergic this is something to consider. The Loft is kept as clean as possible but guests do often invite Zumi inside. There is an easy 2 mile walk to the village of Eastsound where you will find tennis courts, the library, theater, restaurants, a great book store with coffee, a brewery, groceries, shops, schools, spa and medical clinic. The hiking in Moran State Park and on the Turtleback Mountain Preserve is not to be missed. And if you leave your car behind: The best part is you won't have to wait in the car lane to board a ferry - but you must make a ferry reservation if you bring your car over. Hitch hiking is allowed on the island. Many hardy souls come over on bikes, but be aware that bike lanes are not always existent and Orcas is hilly. Starting on Solstice weekend and running through the Labor Day weekend, Orcas Island has a shuttle bus service which is available on weekends, Friday through Monday. Travelers can download the schedule and pick-up sites at sanjuantransit/orcas-schedule. There is a local taxi service as well. Orcas also has a bicycle rental shop in Eastsound, and a moped rental shop just above the ferry landing. Guest AccessGuests have their own private deck looking out over the Salish Sea and towards Mt Baker, access to the beach below, and to a beautiful yard in front. There are stairs up to the Loft. The internet can be iffy or even unavailable in certain spots on the island. Right now it is not working well here, but who knows about tomorrow... AT&T and Verizon smart phones do work in this location but wifi is poor unless you have your own hotspot. One can most always get fast and excellent internet reception at the Eastsound library even in the library parking lot and at Enzos cyber cafe. Interaction with GuestsI enjoy sharing this lovely place with my guests, and am happy to get to know them; however, often they come to be by themselves and have quiet time - which I do respect - and so I am friendly but careful to allow them their privacy. The NeighborhoodThis is a very small old rural neighborhood about two miles from the village of Eastsound, with Buck Mountain very nearby, and many birds, wild turkeys, and deer who roam freely on the road and in everyone's backyard. Because they do roam freely and some people feed them, they have no fear of people or cars, so it is necessary to drive very slowly as you drive on Buckhorn Rd. Bald Eagles, seals, and resident River Otters can often be seen on the beach. A few young children also live at Buckhorn and play in the neighborhood and on the beach. Getting AroundBest to have a car, or a bicycle with you, although we encourage carpooling and hitch hiking and there are designated signs and spots for catching a ride. There is a summer transit bus operating throughout the island, and taxi service year round. Other Things to NoteI do have small dogs, my own highly trained heeler/corgi mix named Lulu, who adores everyone even if she doesn't know them, and two small neighbor dogs that moved in a while ago. I thought I was just fostering them for elderly neighbors but of course that was my mistake and they are determined to stay here....these two little guys, Bertie and Leonard, need to be introduced before you access the garden because they are 10 pound chihuahua mixes and can be territorial. Just so you know....I kick myself for ever letting them through the gate, but there we are....

The SpaceEnjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it for the summer of 2013! The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat. Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West. As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people. We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from. There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island. Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use! We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation. Guest AccessWe have tried to offer the most complete island experience we can so you can get the most out of your time on Orcas for the best value. So here is what we have included: kayaks, row boat, bicycles, hot tub, hammock, crab traps, pingpong table, inflatable water toys, over 100 VHS movies, lawn picnic table, Gas BBQ, and it's all just a 15 minute bike ride to town. Interaction with GuestsCall, email or text us with any questions any time, day or night. Otherwise, enjoy your private time at our home. The NeighborhoodIt's quiet, private, and secluded, yet close enough to town that you can ride your bike there in 15 minutes. The ocean is there to play in during the day and the sound of the waves lull you to sleep at night. It's the most peaceful place we know. Getting AroundNope - need a car or bike to get around. Orcas is the hilliest island in the San Juans, so biking around the entire island is challenging, but just riding to town and back is easy. Other Things to NoteThere are two queen beds in the main bedrooms. In the loft there are 2 cots and 4 fold out beds. We provide basics such as cooking oils, some spices and a full set of cookware. We also provide enough firewood (for the wood stove or firepit) for 1-2 days, but after that we ask you to supply your own wood.

The SpaceOur building was constructed in the 1940's and added to in the 1970's. It houses an artist's studio and an acupuncture/Chinese medicine practice on the ground floor. The apartment occupies the entire top floor of the building and has a view of East Sound in the winter and of trees and gardens in the summer. The guest room is suitable for two adults. Ours is a non-smoking property, and we are keen recyclers. Guest AccessGuests have access to the living/dining room, to the shared bathroom, and to the large bedroom/sitting room. There is very limited access to kitchen facilities. Interaction with GuestsMy son, Charles Dalton who founded The Kitchen restaurant in the village, will be sharing the apartment with you. I live in a small studio on the south side of the ground floor. We both look forward to welcoming you and will be happy to answer questions and give all sorts of unneeded advice. The NeighborhoodEastsound Village is the heart of Orcas Island. All major services are here and are only steps from our building. Orcas Center for the performing arts, Seaview Movie Theatre, Orcas Island Historical Museum are all within shouting distance as are North Beach and East Sound, both good places to launch kayaks, have a picnic, or just lay back and take in the magnificent views. Getting AroundYou did not need a vehicle if you plan to spend your time in Eastsound. There is a shuttle bus in summer which travels from the ferry to Doe Bay at the east end of the island, with stops along the way. There are also taxis and rental cars available. Our favorite mode of transportation after walking is cycling, and we have a shop a few doors away that rents, sells, and repairs bicycles. Other Things to NoteI am flexible re arrival/departure times which are dependent upon ferry schedules. However, in order to keep your spot clean it would be best if you planned to check in about 1pm and to leave by 10am. Also, I do not use a cellphone, do not access social media, etc., so please email. Thank you.
