The SpaceRemote, quiet cabin with loft bedroom and small, southern-exposure deck offer creative sanctuary. *Please note: winter weather advisory from Nov - Feb. We reserve the right to cancel any bookings at short notice in the event of radical weather (flooding, power-outs, road closures, weather warnings from NOAA); guests would receive complete refund. Also, we anticipate opening up the 2017 calendar sometime in December. In the meantime, if you have dates in mind, feel free to message us directly. Efficient, tiny galley, wood stove, on-demand heater, handcrafted woodwork. Rustic, yet elegant. 7 miles to the store or gourmet restaurants. Dozens of beaches, trails, bikeways, rivers, state parks to explore. Main room is 225 sq ft with cathedral ceiling and a 120 sq ft loft. A state-of-the art shower, toilet, and pedestal sink afford endless forest views, on-demand hot water, and antique touches. There's a loveseat, cozy chair, table and chairs in the main room. Up the 11-step ladder is a queen Flo-Bed, a small desk and a tree-house-like view of the forest. Filtered light and a restful sense of sanctuary insure sweet dreams. Galley is stocked with essentials including organic, locally roasted coffee, pristine, deep-well water and a small fridge for treats you find locally. Farm-fresh apples, berries or eggs on request (in season.) No TV. Your choice: disconnect from the information superhighway or connect to wireless and cell networks. Note, we are quite a ways from town and the cabin is self-catering (e.g. no room service breakfast like the inns provide). Designed for a getaway. We look forward to sharing this retreat with those who seek harmony and proximity to nature's moods. Please have a complete AirBnB profile before requesting a reservation, and feel free to send a message if you're interested in dates that appear to be blocked on the calendar. A few words about Owl Tree cabin to help you decide if you might want to stay here. We first noticed how undulating lacy green patterns change as the morning sun makes its way through the trees, an ideal place for a sanctuary. Probably, if you love Las Vegas, you most likely would not like it here. And if you love Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, you would be more inclined to like it here. It is similar to Deetjen's, rustic and natural merging with nature, but dissimilar, in that the Big Sur Inn is most always full to capacity, so you’re in close proximity to people. Here you have privacy, a retreat from the world. The Owl Tree cabin has its own level driveway; it takes less than a minute to walk from where you park to the cabin. We live on the far side of the property. All that you might hear at night will be the breeze in the top branches of the redwoods, and perhaps frogs, an owl, or the red-tailed hawk who lives somewhere nearby. Every spot on Earth has its own unique energy and the cabin and the small canyon it was built in are conducive to creative energy, to the creative mind, at work or play. The cabin is also a place for intimacy—hopefully more than just a place to sleep while you enjoy the coast, this place is designed to become part of your experience here. The oak table was the idea the cabin was built around—you can sit there, draw, write or daydream, warmed by the wood burning stove, and let your imagination germinate like the wild orchids in the canyon. Proximity. We are located about four and a half miles inland from Pacific Coast Highway, just beyond reach of summertime wind and fog. When it is cold and wet on the coast it is usually beautiful and warm here, summer tempered by the coastal marine layer. So you can enjoy the sunshine and enjoy the coast, without being stuck in the fog. Closest market, post office and gas are 7 miles from the cabin. Some of the best beaches, hiking trails, places to dive and kayak are between here and Elk, and of course the historic and picturesque village of Mendocino is about 13 miles away. A wine tasting trip to the magnificent Anderson valley is within 30 minutes. The Owl Tree cabin comes with its own picnic table and umbrella in a small meadow, next to redwood trees: also perfect for stargazing. Regardless of where you decide to stay, we hope you have a great time. It is hard to imagine a world in trouble when you are here. The meadows, the forests, and the pristine ocean seem timeless. Check in usually from 4 pm - 6 pm by prior arrangement for your particular arrival day. Try to arrive before dark! Check out at noon. Note: price includes 11% Mendocino County Bed Tax for stays less than 30 days. Interaction with GuestsGreeting upon arrival. After that you're on your own, unless you need something or want to chat, in which case we're available! The NeighborhoodOur homestead is in the middle of timberland. There really isn't a neighborhood. Closest restaurants (Ledford House)(Albion River Inn) are 6 miles; closest store and post office (Albion) are 7 miles. We also offer coffee and tea. There are books/games and a record player for music. * The queen bed is located in the second floor loft space. Just remember to go up and down facing them... like a ladder :) *The water tower seating is lower to the ground. Please see pictures for reference. Guest AccessGuest are free to explore around the forest and garden. *Unfortunately we don't offer Internet as the wifi plans in this area are very limited with caps on data. Some people have had success with Verizon, but no ATT reception. ATT reception only available in the bigger towns along the coast. . The SpaceAbalone Cottage is perched on 25-acres of Greenwood Ridge, in Mendocino County. This hexagonal, hand-crafted cottage offers rustic-charm and sweeping vistas of the forest and distant ocean views. The cottage is two levels - the upper main level houses the large sleeping area with queen bed (comfy feather bed mattress topper and down comforters), wood burning stove, space heater, sofa, toilet/sink (there is a discrete privacy wall but this is not a private enclosed bathroom), radio, blue tooth speaker, and expansive views from three large windows. Your private downstairs (which you access VIA OUTDOOR STAIRS - see photos) includes a large tiled shower and bathroom sink, and a complete kitchen with full-size refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, stovetop espresso maker, coffee maker, toaster, tea pot, blender, dishes, table and chairs. Views from the kitchen/dining area. The entrance to the owner's home is 50' from the cottage entrance, but your total privacy is assured. Enjoy the large main redwood deck with views of the distant sea (see photos). A charming kitchen garden and koi pond surround the deck, making it the perfect spot to enjoy your favorite beverage and the often picturesque sunsets, or sip your coffee in the morning with the birds and other forest life. You also have the cottage's private deck with its koi pond beckoning you to sit and enjoy the sun. For your morning we provide coffee and tea, and a light starter to prepare you for an exciting day of adventure on the Mendocino coast! IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTE: Although only 130 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, Abalone Cottage offers a soothing respite amidst the vastness of nature. This special property is 20 minutes from Elk and the Pacific Ocean, 30 minutes from Boonville and the many wineries of the cutting-edge Anderson Valley, and 40 minutes from the famed village of Mendocino. The roads are windy (motion sickness sufferers, beware), and for those who aren't regular navigators of coastal routes, expect to take much more time than you are used to getting from point to point. If you want very close proximity and short drives to local dining and wining, we suggest you look at other nice options in the AirBnB community in the Village of Mendocino or elsewhere. If, however, you're in need of a real break and enjoy - night skies teeming with stars, wind rustling in the trees, rain on the roof while you're sleeping - Abalone Cottage might very well be the place for you! There are some very nice dining choices and local wineries in the area but, as noted, they do require a bit of drive: 20 - 40+ minutes. As we've suggested to our many happy guests, the best ways to experience the joys of Abalone Cottage are to spend the day exploring on the coast or in the valley, then return to the cottage to enjoy wine and a spectacular sunset on the deck and delight in the use of the kitchen facilities. Note that cell phone and related network access is good for most carriers (but is carrier dependent) and the cottage has limited access to wireless internet and there is no television. Visit our guidebook on this site for a taste of our favorite restaurants, wineries and bars and an idea of the many offerings of the county, and if this sounds like the spot for you, we hope to hear from you soon! Interaction with GuestsWe live on the property, and our house is ~ 50' cottage. We are available either in person or via cell in real time to make activity/winery/restaurant suggestions, answers questions, or address concerns. We go to great lengths to assure your privacy, and encourage you to make exclusive use of the main deck and the smaller cottage deck. Our level of interactions with guests are based on the guests' wishes, and range from no more than a friendly welcome and introduction to the property for those who want privacy, to the many delightful guests with whom we've shared glasses of wine and even meals.

There are also two bedrooms downstairs, an ocean view queen master bedroom suite and another queen bedroom with direct access to a newly remodeled full bath. Altogether, there's room for as many as 12 guests, with a maximum of eight adults. A large deck with a hot tub, and lots of seating complete the picture of this perfect Elk vacation getaway—ideal for a family vacation or couples traveling together with kids. The SpaceThe Space (completely private): The Dreaming Tower is on the 3rd and 4th floor of the main house (where we live) and is accessible by a private outdoor grapevine lined staircase. Once you breathe in the fresh air and the view at the top the stairs – you’ll take a right into your room. The art-filled main room (3rd floor) is an open studio design with lots of windows, a queen sized bed, dining table and a kitchenette. The kitchen area includes a mini-fridge, 2 burner gas stove, sink, microwave, toaster oven, coffee grinder and marker, utensils, cookware and dinnerware. Also provided is a bottle of my favorite red wine from a local winery, coffee/ tea and essential condiments, including sugar, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. The private full bathroom is accessible by a very short walk OUTSIDE on your covered deck and is equipped with a standing shower (see photos). If you want to get even higher, climb the inside stairs to the 4th floor loft, where you’ll discover an enchanted space with more awe inspiring views and the “Turret Art Gallery & Mini Museum” with changing exhibits for your pleasure. *The location: Since we share the property with Ross Ranch horseback rides can easily be arranged in advance ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)) – for either the surrounding redwood forest area or on Manchester beach, a 40 minute drive away. We are also conveniently located between the charming, and often overlooked, coastal town of Elk (30 min drive) and the Anderson Valley tasting rooms (30 min drive). Make a trip to Elk for a great breakfast at Queenie’s Roadhouse café (closed bet Dec 13 and mid Feb), a nice walk on Greenwood Beach and then either head along the coast south to tour the Point Arena Lighthouse (30 min drive) or north to the historic town of Mendocino (30 min drive). Or head to the quaint Anderson Valley for a stroll beneath the giant old-growth redwood trees at Hendy Woods State Park (20 min drive) and an afternoon of wine tasting and bahl gorms (“good food” in Boontling, the almost extinct local language). *Note: getting here and around requires driving on windy rural roads and even thought we are only 130 miles north of San Francisco - it will take you at least 3 hours to get here, unless you know the roads and drive like a bat out of hell local... so plan accordingly. Animals: We are a small working farm; therefore we have to be strict about our no pet policy. It is not that we dislike animals, on the contrary we are already flooded with them – we have resident pets (cats and dogs) and livestock (chickens and horses) that we need to consider. We do apologize for the inconvenience! Guest AccessIn addition to your private space, you are welcome to relax on our large deck and enjoy the sunshine. You are also free to walk around the property and visit our gardens and walk the driveway. But my sister's house area is private (we will point that out). Interaction with GuestsWe are available to help make your stay a pleasant one and make recommendations on activities, food, hikes, etc. We are open friendly and up for interacting as much or as little as you like. Other Things to NoteWe do allow smoking outside but not in the room. We do have wireless internet but we have a very limited plan (since satellite is the only option here) and are charged heavily for going over - so we ask that guests please don't live stream movies and download large files. Basic use - email, social media, etc. is fine. Thank you in advance.
