The SpaceWhile the bedrooms are large and airy, the house revolves around the kitchen and the outdoor area outside the kitchen, at the back of the house, which is private and with an awesome view. The kitchen has an electric stove as well as a wood stove, which keeps it very cozy in the winter. And a big blue couch to lie back and read on. The spacious main bedroom has a fireplace in it, also a writing table. In the fourth bedroom is an amateur benchpress for anyone who might be inclined. Guest AccessTravellers have full access to the main house and garden. Interaction with GuestsI spend most of my time in Cape Town, so I won't often be able to meet my guests and interact with them, but I do know that most people visiting the house are as reclusive as I am and won't mind. A friend in the town is intimate with the house and will welcome you, settle you in and lock up after you leave. His name is Koos. He'll also highlight to you where to go for food etc. The NeighborhoodWhile Waterval Boven / Emgwenya is wonderfully quiet and peaceful, there's a ton of things to do in the vicinity... and many hidden gems. In terms of places to eat and socialise at, there's also the quaint and quirky Aloes on the N4, the Five Owls at Bergwater Lodge, also the lovely Malaga Hotel, and then Black Eagle further down the main road. In town, Acra Retreat is highly recommended: it's got a lovely homestyle bar and restaurant, also a pool and an extraordinary view from the escarpment edge. I make it a point of watching the big and waxy Dutch cheese of a full moon rise from there when I'm in town. There's also the Steam Inn (across from the police station) for pub grub and a 'local is lekker' Mpumalanga bar experience. Also, highly recommended are the cheeseburgers and plunger coffee at Travellers (daytime only) in the Main Road of Waterval Boven, just next to the (only) petrol station. Getting AroundWaterval Boven is 2 km from the N4 that connects Johannesburg & Pretoria with Mbombela / Neslpruit and the RSA / Mozambique border. Maputo is only 300 km away: I've often been there and back in one day, enjoying sumptuous East Coast prawns and Mozambiquean beer in Maputo for lunch. Waterval Boven is ideal for day trips to Dullstroom, Kaapsehoop, Mashishing / Lydenburg, the Long Tom Pass, Sabie, Graskop, God's Window and Kruger National Park. Other Things to NoteThere's a portable braai for use outside, you'll find it kept in the kitchen. We'll make sure you have a complementary bag of wood and because I'd encourage you to only drink bottled water, a complementary 5-ltr bottle of local spring water. Basic foodstuffs can be sourced from TARS supermarket on the right-hand side as you enter the town. There's also a bottle store and two butcheries in town (please ask for directions) and an FNB with two ATMs.
