The NeighborhoodThe Upper Valley offers lots to do, indoors and out, year-round. In Enfield, the Shaker Museum is right down the road, as well as LaSalette Shrine (a beautiful outdoor walk). We'd also recommend local farmers markets, the Montshire Museum of Science (super hands-on fun for all), the Hood Museum at Dartmouth, Dartmouth film offerings, live performances at the HOP at Dartmouth, King Arthur Flour, Simon Pearce glass blowing, tour Harpoon in Windsor, hiking and biking - and exploring all the unique, neighboring towns. These are all within 20-30 minutes, driving. Getting AroundWe have plenty of parking, including use of our garage for at least one car, if you'd like. Other Things to NoteAll bedrooms are upstairs (half-flight up from living areas). Beds are as follows: master suite with King bed, 2nd bedroom with queen bed and crib, 3rd bedroom with 2 twin bunks (top bunk for child only) and a toddler bed. The living room sofa pulls out to a queen bed. The sofa in the basement would accommodate one more adult. We also have a queen air mattress and a pack'n'play crib available upon request. The SpaceSpend this memorable weekend together in a beautiful lakehouse, just minutes from all the hubbub on campus but a world away. There's room for 8, more if we talk about it. Guest AccessYou have the whole house, so you will have three bedrooms, two on the main floor (queen and full) and one upstairs (bunk with full and twin plus one more twin). Full bath downstairs with jetted tub and upstairs full bath. Also, the rest of the house! Fully appointed kitchen, dining room and living room, plus the best feature is the front porch overlooking the lake. Your breakfast is up to you - I leave you with ingredients, a full kitchen and coffee. Interaction with GuestsI will be onsite or nearby but I want you to make this visit to Mascoma Lake your own. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions or guide you towards what you want to do in the area, but for the most part I will leave you alone (in a good way). The NeighborhoodA short trip from civilization - just 15 minutes from Dartmouth and Hanover, NH. This is an old, established neighborhood and one I love to be a part of. I don't mean to insult my neighbors by this "old" crack but I like to be direct. I've owned this house for 20+ years and it's been in my family forever. My dad lives next door in a cottage also in the family forever. Extended neighbors on both sides have been here for decades and we all enjoy a peaceful and comfortable environment - and I expect my guests to be respectful of this. Getting AroundWe are in a rural community. You can catch the local bus system (Advanced Transit) 3 miles away in downtown Enfield and this will take you to Lebanon, Hanover, West Lebanon, and White River Jct, VT, but only in the mornings and evening (commuter-based). Your own transportation is quite helpful. Other Things to NoteFrom our location at the south end of Mascoma Lake, we are 15 minutes from Lebanon, NH, 15-20 minutes from Hanover and Dartmouth College. To the south, New London is just 20 minutes. Locally, I can direct you to hiking trails within a short walk to Smith Pond or a short drive to various sites like Cardigan Mountain or larger climbs on the AT. I have a swimming area and ramp for non-motorized boat launching.

The SpaceEnjoy your summertime visit right on the lake with full use of the whole house. Bring your own non-motorized watercraft and enjoy the tranquility of lake life. As I'm adding a 4th bedroom for 2016 so pricing has changed - but I'm also offering a weekend rate vs a weekday rate - balancing out for a longer stay. Now there are two rooms on the first floor (double and queen) and two rooms on the second (1 with a double bed, the bunk room has 2 twins with a double as the bottom bunk). Guest AccessYou have the whole house, so you will have four bedrooms, two on the main floor (queen and full) and two upstairs (bunk with full and twin plus one more twin) and a double bed. The SpaceWithin my house is a completely separate 5 room apartment. The current tenant occupies it only 3 days a week. (You may have noticed that I have only one bedroom on the second floor. The rest of the second floor belongs to the apartment.) My entire space is available to you. In the barn/garage are one set of ladies cross country skis, snow shoes, and sleds, as well as snow shovels and salt which you may use. I should note that some of the appliances and fixtures have some age on them, but everything works fine. I truly hope that you enjoy your stay in my house! Guest AccessAll of my house will be available to you except for one storage closet on the third floor. My house is on a well-cared for state road. I will leave detailed information about shopping, entertainment, emergency help, museums, recreation, etc. Interaction with GuestsI will be out of state and out of country, but accessible by phone. I am sorry not to have a chance to meet you. I wish you a comfortable stay in my home. The NeighborhoodOur 1.2 mile historic district is a great place to walk. It is completely residential: old inns, stores, taverns, farms, a smithy, and even a church have been turned into lovely residences. The original village meetinghouse has been restored and is used in the warmer months. A small commercial center is 2 miles away. There are 4 local churches: Methodist, Catholic, Assembly of God, and Baptist. Getting AroundYou will need a car. Limited public bus transportation is 2 miles away. Other Things to NoteMy third floor is not centrally heated, but can easily be kept cozy with two oil filled electric radiators and convection. There are two forced hot water heating zones: one for the kitchen ell and one for the first and second floors of my part of the main house. A generator is available in case of a power outage, but you would probably need help with it. I have never needed to use it. There will be some firewood in the garage should you choose to use the fireplaces or wood stove.

The SpaceAll of this very large space in the apartment is for your use including all closets and storage. The space is set up like a very large studio with two separate bedrooms in addition in addition to the great room or common room. There is one bathroom accessed from the common room. The common room bed is located in an alcove off the main part of the common room. The common room has a large walk in closet, a large under staircase storage area and the bedrooms each have a closet with a door. At the base of the interior stairs is a common room we call the carriage room for hanging warm clothes, dressing for the weather, getting one's skis on or the like and will be your entrance in the winter and by request can be used for secure storage year round. Limited yard space with natural and slightly improved access has granite seats and a fire pit with permit fires (website hidden) Cardigan as well as pastoral and forest views can be seen from the apartment. There is a small shared deck with chairs for your use outside the main entrance next to the bridge. The bridge leads to a terrace, garden, granite seats, fire pit and small backyard you may use. These are natural or improved irregular ground which may be slippery under local conditions year round. Guest AccessPlease park next to the main house on the High Street side for your convenience. You will see a sign in front of your access way that says "Free Lobster" at the entrance to the carriage way; the apartment is about 65' behind the Lobster sign at the end of the carriage way and at the top of the exterior stairway. Feel free to park in front of the sign and gate. After entering the carriage way gate to the left of the Lobster sign as above, not the gate to the main house porch on the right, walk down the carriage way about 65' straight to the exterior staircase and climb the stairs to your exterior entry door of the apartment. The gates, apartment, and carriage room (common room) are unlocked. When you need the keys you will find the keys hanging on a hook near the door or on the dining room table. In the winter, enter the Carriage Room (common room) of the Carriage House under the exterior stairs; at the end of the carriage way is the carriage house door, enter this common space and leave unlocked, the interior stairs to the apartment are to the left. The entrance to our home is to the right and off limits please. Interaction with GuestsCell phone service is spotty here in the village at this time. Text and email do work well for us. The NeighborhoodCanaan, NH is in the Dartmouth Lakes region of New Hampshire. The Carriage House apartment is attached to the historic 1895 Rand House which is located on the corner of former Parker Street (23 NH RT 118 now) at the south end of High Street. The Rand House overlooks the common or green of the Canaan Village at the junction of US RT 4 and NH RT 118. The Rand House has a wrap around porch, a tower, beautiful interior woodwork and a rich history. Free tours of the Rand House by appointment only with a Carriage House stay. Geologically Canaan is within the White Mountains but it is about one half hour from the White Mountain National Forest. We are surrounded by public lands which are readily accessible for year round recreation. Dartmouth College, Hanover, the Lebanon Opera House and others provides much cultural activities available to the public. Canaan, NH is part of the Upper Valley (of the Connecticut River) Community which includes 25 municipalities and a 2012 census of 78,152 people. Getting AroundNew Hampshire provides very good storm clean up and plowing. Advance Transit - Free bus to and from Canaan Village with Lebanon NH and connecting destinations in Hanover NH, White River Junction VT , Norwich VT and the region. Geologically we are located within the edge of the White Mountains. Thousands of miles of all kinds of year round trails connect with the Canaan Village. Other Things to NoteShopping for groceries in Canaan; I use Pap Z's a quarter mile further east on NH RT 118 from the apartment. Breakfast and lunch can be had across the common at Dishing it Out Wednesday through Sunday. Let us know if you plan to do much cooking in the apartment and will upgrade the cookware for special needs. Two other restaurants are within a block of the commons everyday for lunch and dinner. Some GPS vendors use the old street name so try 23 Parker Street, Canaan, NH if it can not find 23 New Hampshire Route 118. Washer and Dryer - If you use the dryer the vent is commonly left on the floor of the upper sitting loft. Heat and moisture will safely vent into the apartment if the vent is ignored. If you wish to avoid the humidity from the dryer insert the vent end into an opened window. Close the window on the vent frame to hold the vent in place and the heat and moisture will be directed outside. Trails - You are near trails which connect to thousands of miles of recreation trails. The Northern Rail Trail (website hidden) and Railroad Park are a few hundred yards away from the apartment for longer walks with your animal or for your recreation. Cross the green to the south and west, go around the ball fields to the river (left) or Depot Street (right).

The SpaceAt its peak in the mid 19th century, the community was home to three "Families" of Shakers. They practiced equality of the sexes and races, celibacy, pacifism and communal ownership of property. Shakers farmed over 3,000 acres of land, educated children in model schools and worshiped in the “Shaker Way." Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site is a vibrant cultural, community and educational center. Interaction with GuestsThe Museum is open for tours 10am - 4pm. The Events Coordinator and Executive Director are usually available during those hours, and available via email/phone for questions before your stay.
