Set in Sydney's inner west, Newtown is well known for its colourful and quirky characters as well as being a melting pot of cultures and lifestyles.
The man behind these beautiful and quirky photographs is Grant Turner, who has been living in Newtown for the last 20 years.
'These photographs are deeply personal and I capture not just the people of Newtown, but the weather and the beautiful intact architecture of Sydney,' he told Daily Mail Australia.
'Its a costly changing suburb so nothing surprises you in Newtown and I'm never surprised by the unexpected.'
Devoid of much corporate presence, its main streets - King Street and Enmore Road - are dominated by low-key pubs and cafes as well as op shops and community centre-points, which still reflect remnants of the hippy generation, and more recently, hold a dominant hipster presence.
The 45-year-old said he decided to walk down King Street on Easter morning of Black Friday, in hope of finding 'something ghostly' to take.
'I stumbled across a guy with a black cat on his shoulder - nowhere else in Sydney would sum up the bizzare nature of Newtown,' he said.
Located only four kilometres from Sydney's CBD, art and music are some of the most important aspects of the suburb, which is a hot spot for live music and well known as a starting point for many hot shot bands - with rumours that AC/DC was founded there and Coldplay filming their latest music video while marching down the main streets.
The area is also well known to have a prominent gay and lesbian scene, well documented in pop culture including the award winning Australian film Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which had a number of scenes set in a local Newtown pub.
It is this unconventional and 'anything goes nature' that a long-term photo essay on the unique suburb, by Mr Turner, hopes to capture.
The photographs display the electric mix of personalities and events which make up the suburbs, from families and students to pets and soldiers, attending their local pubs and protests – or even simply just strolling the streets.
