The man behind these beautiful and quirky photographs is Grant Turner, who has been living in Newtown for the last 20 years. 'These photographs are deeply personal and I capture not just the people of Newtown, but the weather and the beautiful intact architecture of Sydney,' he told Daily Mail Australia. 'Its a costly changing suburb so nothing surprises you in Newtown and I'm never surprised by the unexpected.' Devoid of much corporate presence, its main streets - King Street and Enmore Road - are dominated by low-key pubs and cafes as well as op shops and community centre-points, which still reflect remnants of the hippy generation, and more recently, hold a dominant hipster presence. The 45-year-old said he decided to walk down King Street on Easter morning of Black Friday, in hope of finding 'something ghostly' to take. 'I stumbled across a guy with a black cat on his shoulder - nowhere else in Sydney would sum up the bizzare nature of Newtown,' he said. Located only four kilometres from Sydney's CBD, art and music are some of the most important aspects of the suburb, which is a hot spot for live music and well known as a starting point for many hot shot bands - with rumours that AC/DC was founded there and Coldplay filming their latest music video while marching down the main streets. The area is also well known to have a prominent gay and lesbian scene, well documented in pop culture including the award winning Australian film Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which had a number of scenes set in a local Newtown pub. It is this unconventional and 'anything goes nature' that a long-term photo essay on the unique suburb, by Mr Turner, hopes to capture. The photographs display the electric mix of personalities and events which make up the suburbs, from families and students to pets and soldiers, attending their local pubs and protests – or even simply just strolling the streets. The SpaceOur light-filled loft room takes up the second floor of our three-bedroom home. The staircase opens directly onto a large attic-style bedroom with comfortable queen size bed, a fan, bar fridge and kettle and an enormous amount of cupboard space for luggage and clothing. The room will be made up for you with fresh linen and towels, a small selection of teas, milk, sugar & some crockery. The modern bathroom with an oversized tub (first floor) is shared with only one other resident. You will also have your own set of keys and access to free Wifi at all times. Other areas in the house include a comfy lounge with TV (though we are more often found reading or gardening than watching telly), and a large modern kitchen which opens onto our gorgeous green courtyard filled with veggies and potted herbs, an avocado & olive tree and if you're lucky, the melodic tunes of the local magpies. The house is on a leafy and mostly quiet street only a minute's walk from Enmore Road, however it can become bustling when the famous Enmore Theatre around the corner has a show or gig on. We are ideally located a stone's throw from some of the funkiest bars, cafes and pubs the area has to offer, as well as what is arguably the best gelato cafe in all of Sydney! This is also our recommendation for fantastic coffee & atmostphere. There is an indoor pool and gym within ten minutes walk, and heading down Enmore Road into the vibrant Newtown will take you amongst all the vintage & op shops, wine bars, yoga studios, theatres, cinemas, galleries, music venues and restaurants. A short stay in our town will never be enough to explore it all. We would love to make welcome guests who are respectful, positive, happy souls of any sexual preference. Guest AccessFull access to all common areas including the lounge room, kitchen & dining area, large relaxing plant-filled courtyard, laundry facilities. Sole access to the loft room on the second floor, with use of the enormous cupboard/luggage space on one side of the room. The other cupboard is house storage. Interaction with GuestsWe are an easy-going duo; friends that have lived together for years, both in our 30's. We work full time. We have a friendly & energetic Staffy named Remi, and a quiet Siamese cat named Link who adores a scratch behind the ears. Your main host is Lou who recently returned from a solo trip around the world where she discovered Airbnb in New York & is keen to offer the same warm & comfortable hospitality to people from around the globe. Our schedules are varied and can be very busy, we will stop for a chat & love to share knowledge of our wonderful town, but will mostly leave you in peace to enjoy the quiet privacy & security of our home. The NeighborhoodNewtown/Enmore is the creative hub of Sydney. It's multicultural, diverse and full of colourful and wonderful people. We love it most for the pubs - the Courty & the Townie, the Carlisle & Coopers. The incredible variety of cuisine from all over the world, the arty Dendy Theatre and the weekend markets and live music at The Hub in the centre of Newtown. It is a fantastic area to simply stroll through, the old houses and architecture are beautiful and the street art brilliant. Even if you have no plans in Sydney - Newtown holds many treasures to be discovered. Getting AroundWe are mere minutes from a myriad of public transport options to take you into the heart of Sydney, to Bondi or Coogee beach or to the Harbour or Circular Quay. To get to our place from the airport, taxi is the easiest and quickest option if you have luggage. It will cost you between $25 - $30, depending on traffic and the time of day. The AirportLink train is $15.40 one way. Change at Central for Newtown, 3 stops away. We are an eight minute walk from Newtown Train Station. Other Things to Note** Our house does have air conditioning, but the loft room itself does not. It can get quite warm up there in summer, however there is a window which opens and cools the room quickly in the evenings. ** The loft room is at the top of a staircase and has no bedroom door. Nobody else uses the stairs so absolute privacy is ensured. We are very careful with the amount of noise we make and how it affects others, and we ask that any guests show the same courtesy. We have hung heavy drapes on the staircase to alleviate noise issues. **Please note that we have a Siamese cat named Link, and as with all Siamese cats he can be quite vocal. He is very friendly and loves a pat and a cuddle, and on occasion he'll talk to you too! **We also now have a very friendly & energetic Staffy dog named Remi. She sleeps in the kitchen downstairs at night and does not have access to your room.

The SpaceMy house is an old shop front that used to be a newsagent. Most Thursdays to Saturdays I turn it into a intimate 40 capacity venue (aptly named "The Newsagency") for solo/duo/bands to come and perform. Down the back there is a two bedroom apartment with kitchen, (tiny) bathroom, courtyard and office/sun room. The room available has a double bed and built-in cupboards. (It's also lockable don't worry!) Fresh linen and towels provided If travelling as a group there is extra floor space available for short stays. Ideal for touring musicians who need a place to crash and a place to rehearse. There is a bus stop right at the front door or a 20 minute walk to Newtown station and plenty of street parking. There is a beautiful park with a gym and swimming pool directly opposite and one of the hippest pubs in Sydney across the road. Cafes, shopping centre, Addison Rd Markets and great small bars are all within walking distance too. Why so cheap you wonder? What's the catch? Everything sounds too good to be that cheap?! Well... the room you would be occupying doesn't have a window - actually it does but it looks out onto the hallway wall. (The place definitely has it's quirks.) There is a skylight that let's in natural light though and the courtyard is pretty super sweet for sunlight. This is not your normal living arrangement but it's THE perfect place for creative people or night owls who love live music or want to be in a good vibe. I try and make shows finish at the very latest 12am. I do most of my work from home (I'm a freelance musician as well as venue operator) so I'm fairly flexible with my time so will most likely be about to help make your holiday in Sydney super fun!

The SpaceSituated only minutes to Newtown and Stanmore strips. The apartment is one bedroom unit featuring sleek near new gourmet kitchen and living room plus sunroom, awesome 3 corner bath, internal laundry It is a great location and a really cute apartment. The apartment is on the ground floor and and only has one half step to get into the sunroom. So the apartment might be good for people with disabilities/ mobility issues or with kids and prams. The bath as you can see from the photos is quite high, which might be a positive or a negative depending on your mobility. If you have questions about this, please let me know. The apartment is a 9 min walk to Newtown (the Hub) and 12 min walk to Newtown Station. 6 min walk to Enmore - you could get buses to the city and Marrickville and beyond from there. The sun room has a fold down futon, which potentially could be good for a bed for another 1 or 2 people. Or a family with kids. The space is very queer and family friendly. If you are unfamiliar with the area, I am more than happy to give you some tips. The only consideration for the space is that it is near a train-line, so you will hear trains passing from time to time. If you live in a city this should be nothing that you don't experience at home. Let me know if you need a parking space, this might be possible Newtown is a pretty great neighborhood, with a history of working class struggle and is home to lots of queer people. It has been gentrified/ hipsterised over the last few years, but it is pretty great, probably the best that Sydney has to offer. The SpaceThere are two bedrooms available to rent (one queen and one double). Both have high quality mattresses with more than adequate cupboard and hanging space. Both rooms open onto the front verandah, providing beautiful morning light. The living room has a large flat screen LCD TV with a selection of DVD's available to you. The study has tea/coffee facilities and your own fridge in case you would like to have a drink without going downstairs. The bathroom is compact, however the shower is well sized. I have a beautiful large grassed backyard (unheard of in the inner west) - that's just calling out for a picnic! The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils (there is also a barbecue outside), and on the off chance I am home to cook dinner, I may also be using the kitchen. However, just as a warning, with the number of amazing and varied cuisines available just minutes away you're unlikely to waste any of your holiday time cooking. My property is listed under 'entire home/apt' because you will have access to the whole home & backyard including a full kitchen. Guest AccessIt is a 2 storey home and you will have sole access to the upper floor ( which is street level), 2 bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and study. The kitchen, dining area, laundry, backyard and BBQ is shared with me. I do eat out a lot and often work till late. Interaction with GuestsI have my own self contained living area (just off the kitchen), however I work full time (shift work) which means I may be here in the mornings or at nights, varies from day to day. I am happy to give you total privacy or offer you directions and suggestions as required. Can always be convinced to share a wine with you (if you enjoy a red) and hear of your days activities or help with future planning. The NeighborhoodA neighborhood with a Greenwich Village vibe, Newtown/Enmore is a great place to stray from tourist traffic and duck into funky clothing, books, homewares and tea shops housed in Victorian-style buildings. The plentiful cafes and restaurants along King Street have earned the roadway the nickname of 'Eat Street.' (TripAdviser). Newtown/Enmore is in the perfect position being close enough to the city to feel the hustle and bustle of city living, however is far enough away that you can sit in the back yard and enjoy the Sydney sunshine and the sound of the native birds. Getting AroundThe house is situated 10min away for Newtown train station, and 2min walk from various bus stops. You can get to the city via the train (10min), or walk along King St/Broadway (30min). USYD and UTS are 10min away by bus, and UNSW only 30min. Coogee beach is only 30 min away by bus, and the famous Bondi beach is only 45min. An Opal card used for buses/trains/ferries is available from convenience stores close to my home or you can buy on your arrival at the airport. For more than 3 people a taxi is the cheapest & most convenient form of transport from the airport. Approx. $40 and 35 minutes, traffic dependent of course. If you're interested in short term/hourly car rental there is a spot opposite my home with a 'GoGet' car. Other Things to NoteGarbage day is Wednesday morning and may be a little noisy for 5 minutes, so I have placed earplugs in the bathroom cupboard for light sleepers. I have only had 1 guest in 3 years comment on the noise on garbage day. There is a study where a single mattress can be added for anyone needing accommodation for more than 4 people. Please contact me as to the availability and pricing. If you're interested in short term/hourly car rental there is a spot opposite my home with a 'GoGet' car.

The Enmore Theatre's distinctive art deco style has led to it being listed in the Historic Buildings Register of the Australian Institute of Architects, and the theatre's listing in the Office of Environment and Heritage states that the building "illustrates the development of suburban theatres in the late 1930s - early 1940s and is of social significance for the local community" Interaction with GuestsWe would interact with our guest prior to their arrival, and greeting them upon their arrival, from here there would be no interaction unless needed. The SpaceI manifested this place as a sanctuary for sleep and creativity. Space is my ultimate luxury so I haven't furnished it with the usual suspects. The simplicity of Japanese living is my inspiration. I sit on futon cushions on the floor to do work and eat so this place suits someone who's still physically agile and prefers the straightforwardness of minimal living. Units of floor furniture can be moved and stacked to enable a clearing of space in which to do creative and physically expressive work. So this place suits clean and sober yogis, dancers, artists who love to maintain practice while still travelling. (something I've found hard to find in the past - people love to clutter their homes with so much furniture and deco objects!) The unit is northeast facing so morning light filters in directly and brightly, so the place heats up fast and dissipates around 9:30am. It gets a fair breeze billowing through in the afternoon. Guest AccessTop floor unit (2 flights of stairs) Wifi Fridge Microwave Futon cushions for seating Shiki futon for sleeping Fan Full bath Coin Op laundry downstairs Large Garden Great location - towards St Peters end of Newtown, so quiet and bird filled. Short walks to Enmore Rd and Marrickville Metro The studio lights will be removed Interaction with GuestsI'll be able to set you up or ensure a close friend can do the same. The NeighborhoodSeriously, it's the most diverse catchment in Sydney. Those of you who get irked by homogeneity, look no further. Eateries and other venues stay open later than the rest of Sydney, there are book shops, cafes, small stores aplenty. The Dendy Cinemas ares up the road on the effervescent King St. For the vegans and foodies out there - plenty of options! I'm currently under the flight path but it's been no trouble as I wake around 7am and they start around then. It's also nice to wake up to the chirps of the resident native birds for which Australia's renown. Getting AroundPublic transport is a dream around here with buses heading in many directions (including the beach) and Newtown Station a short walk away. There's plenty of street parking too. Other Things to NoteWill post more photos of garden and area soon. Teas are provided.
