The SpaceLarge apartment with a fully equipped kitchen and two balconies: one in front and one in the rear. A living room with satellite TV and WIFI. There's a King size bed in the bedroom, and AC. You have a futon which opens into a full bed in the living room. There are stairs to the rooftop, where you can see the ocean. There's a Gazebo in the back yard where you may grill your dinner! You can walk to almost everything you need. A car is optional, not a necessity. Our street is safe and well lit at night. Enjoy all that Vieques has to offer in your own beachy apartment! Parking on the street, right in front of your apartment. There are beach chairs and coolers underneath the stairs. There's a Gazebo in the back yard, as well as coconut trees, guavas, mangos, plantains, and papaya- take whatever is in season. ( coconuts are around all year). WIFI is available, although many guests tell us that it works best on the balcony. The owners, Joe and Margo, live on the first floor. We are available whenever we are home ( most of the time!) Esperanza, our neighborhood, is wonderful because you can walk to just about everything you need, day or night. It has the popular Malecon ( Boardwalk). On the Malecon, there are restaurants, bars, gift shops, a small museum and aquarium, and several Biobay Tour companies. Of course, there is the beach, but there are several more swimming beaches. One just a 10 minute walk farther, and two more, a 15 min and a 20 min farther walk. Public transportation ( called Publicos) are easy, and reasonably priced, in case you don't feel like walking! They pass along the Malecon, dropping people off, and picking people up. We also have grocery stores, a bakery, a pizza shop, all within 1 or 2 blocks from the apartment. We are only one and a half blocks from the Malecon, an easy walk, but just far enough away to not hear the occasional noisiness of the Boardwalk activity. We know all of our neighbors, and feel great that we are always helping and watching out for each other. Also, there are two resident dogs who live in their own area on the property- they are friendly to guests, but keep the area safe. Publicos are the common method of getting around. They are usually vans, with writing on the windshield. They pass along the Malecon, dropping off people and also picking up passengers. They will take you wherever you need to go, at a very reasonable cost. Sometimes you will be in a Publico with other passengers. That's how they keep their prices low. There is also one taxi service, which costs a little more, but you ride only with your own group, and their vehicles are in excellent shape, and they answer their phone almost all the time- ( publicos might be unavailable for certain days). Guest AccessWashing Machine on back balcony. Parking on the street, right in front of your apartment. There are beach chairs and coolers underneath the stairs. The SpaceCasa Esperanza is located in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza on the south coast which definitely is the buzzing tourist side of the island with beaches such as Sun Bay, Esperanza Beach, Media Luna, Navio, and also restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance from the house. This newly decorated rental is located a little off the street, so there is private parking inside the lot under a carport and there is also a large shady backyard with patio furniture and hammocks to laze around in enjoying the breeze and garden or use the outdoor shower. A new outdoor covered porch has been added along with an additional bathroom. This season we have also improved the inside of our rental with some new amenities. There is new living room furniture and the kitchen has also been updated with new linens, supplies, and cookware. The bedrooms and bathroom have also been redone with new furniture, mattresses, and also higher quality linens. Some of the amenities include Gas BBQ, hammock, fully equipped kitchen, A/C in the bedrooms for your sleeping comfort, ceiling and floor fans throughout the house to keep the breezes flowing, HI-DEF TV w/ satellite and DVD player, Radio/CD Player, guest book with travel information, book, CD and DVD library, fresh linens, new washing machine, beach towels, beach chairs, cooler, a 5 -10 min walk to the beach, restaurants, and shops. The SpacePura Vida is an inviting home located in Esperanza, the quaint fishing town of Vieques as well as the most popular tourist area. The three bedroom, one bath house is located in a great neighborhood, only 1 block, or less than a 5 minute walk, to the Malecon. There is a lack of rental cars on Vieques, and if not reserved ahead of time, they may all be sold out. Avoid being left without a car to explore Vieques. Our SUV has three rows of seats holding 8 passengers. If you are a larger group staying at Pura Vida, an 8 passenger SUV negates the need to rent two vehicles, you can everyone fit in one SUV, thus saving you money on both rental fees, gas etc.We do charge extra for the SUV, please inquire and I will promptly respond with the rate. We are baby and child friendly! We had our first child in November of 2007, our second in January 2010. We enjoy bringing them to the island and they love Media Lunas gentle waves and shallow beach. At Pura Vida we have a Pack N Play crib, child booster seat for feeding (works well instead of high chair), Britax car seats, booster style car seats, and stroller. We also have a bunch of beach toys, child snorkel gear, books, games and puzzles to keep kids entertained. That is if they aren't worn out after a long day at the beach. We are happy to provide these child amenities to our guests free of charge, pending no abnormal damage to them. We also have a TV, Blu Ray DVD player, vast library of adult and children DVDs, Playstation 2 and Wii with games for you to enjoy. Although we offer a SUV, our convenient location allows one to easily enjoy much of what Vieques has to offer without driving. Stroll to dinner and dine overlooking the Caribbean, grab a drink at one of the oceanfront bars, spend the day at the park, or experience the beauty (and nightlife) of Esperanza Beach and the Malecon, all within walking distance. Guest AccessPura Vida is a single family home, there is no shared portions of the home, it is for the exclusive use of our guests. Interaction with GuestsWe will not be present during the guest's stay, the home is a single family home and exclusively yours. There is no sharing or separate apartments. Our care takers live a few blocks away in the same area. They have lived on Vieques since 2005 and are very knowledgeable about the island, restaurants, tours, beaches, just about everything! You will probably see Steeler Joe, our caretaker, on the Malecon during your stay. The NeighborhoodWe love the fact we can walk to the Malecon (oceanfront bar, restaurant and gift shop area). If some people in your party are getting ready and others want to walk down, it's very easy to do. The neighborhood is also very safe. Part of Puerto Rican culture revolves around roosters, from show to fighting. There are roosters in virtually all of Esperanza and Vieques as a whole. Locals living around Pura Vida, and many residences in Esperanza and Vieques, have roosters. You can hear roosters during the day at Pura Vida and most everywhere in Esperanza. Around dusk they are silent. With the AC running they are virtually inaudible within the house. Most people report roosters don't bother them and they get used to it. Therefore we want to make it clear that roosters do exist on Vieques and the neighborhood. Getting AroundWell, our SUV is perfect for getting around the island. Vieques does not have any public transportation other than Publicos which is a shared 15 passenger taxi van. Our SUV is an 8 seat Honda Pilot Limited. We do charge extra for the SUV, however our rates are significantly lower than an 8 seat vehicle with a car rental agency. Other Things to NoteAll bedrooms have Air Conditioning. We also have a central Air conditioning unit in the main living area giving Pura Vida 100% AC comfort. We also have WiFi at Pura Vida for your use.

Other Things to Notea review from a guest outside airbnb: "Nestled in the quiet neighborhood of Esperanza on the south side of Vieques, Casa Esperanza is the perfect get away for a couple, or two, or even a small family. This quaint and eccentric bungalow featuring guava, coconut, and breadfruit trees around a wonderful backyard porch is only a couple of minute's walk from the beach and thoroughfare of Esperanza. Being up on the hill allows the steady island breeze to sweep through the house and relieve tenants from the heat. The owner, Lili, is very nice and keeps her house colorful and clean. I've stayed here twice while down in Vieques for work purposes and have really enjoyed the open air, cool breezes, and relaxing island sounds, can't wait to return!"

Guest AccessThe whole house to yourself, the beach 2 minutes away from our beautiful promenade, gorgeous sunsets, bars, shops, restaurants......Paradise!!!! Interaction with GuestsNone. Only to get keys and return them, At times I have someone on the island for that purpose only, but they are available on a limited basis. Please keep in mind that this is my home as well as a rental. All measures are taken to make the space as comfort driven as possible. You will find some stored items in the bathroom. Due to circumstances beyond my control I was forced to place them in this area. This in no way should impede access to any use of the facilities. I am making you aware so that it is not a surprise to you. I will mention as well that the house needs a new fence. You may find that the fence has not been repaired. Again you still have access to the property with no problems. The needed repairs are pending and will be made as soon as it is possible. This is one of the reasons I offer the cottage at such a low rate. Still the house is quaint and comfortable with a great location. I mention these details to avoid any undue expectations. The house is not a luxury property nor a hotel, just a simple casita near the beach, no frills and at a budget price for these reasons. I am in an ongoing process of improvement to the property but renting it is key. I appreciate your patronage. The NeighborhoodConvenience, The beach..... only steps away Near everything ....... Bio Bay tours meet down the street at the corner in front of the gazebo in the Malecón. 7% room tax is included in your rental fee Getting AroundTaxi /publico is available but renting a car is best. Snorkel from shore! Swim to the little island in Esperanza Bay? Baseball field and basketball court around the corner. Walk to Beaches: From Casita Rosita you can walk past 3 house and a short path down hill to a lovely cove. Walk around the rocks to your right and get to a wide open coconut grove lined beach. Or walk to the Malecon and take the entrance down steps by the Malecon Inn, or across from Duffy’s, or get in between the piers, or beyond the piers, or walk around the corner along the shore to the lower end of SunBay State Park. Drive to beaches: 1) U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge beaches are not to be missed, for the diversity of settings, beach entrances, most make you feel you own the place. See the island maps in the house and distributed everywhere. 2) Quick beach trip by car: Be at SunBay in 5 minutes if you drive; 3) Quick beach trip to the Refuge: Red Beach. Snorkeling from shore by Casita Rosita: The beach just down from our house has good snorkeling that continues along the high cliff and a short ways the other direction. Snorkel also on the west side of the little island you can see from shore—it’s a 15 minutes swim out. Bio Bay Phenomena: The water glows at night in the bioluminescent bay–here in Vieques, close to Casita Rosita. Single-celled organisms by the hundreds of thousands emit a flash of light when the water moves–the kayak, your hand, the paddle, the fish swimming by. It is a unique experience. Vieques’ bio bay is considered the best in the world. Many tour companies will take you out with a guide for about $30 a person. These one cell organisms, called dinofalgenates, are half-plant, half-animal. We have the greatest concentrations of these dinoflaggelates because of our healthy mangroves. Come see the water light up with a glittery trail when anything moves through it. Our bay is surrounded by healthy mangroves with roots reaching down into the water, acting as a nursery for fish. Is is in these roots, also, that the food for dinoflagellates is. There is a delicate balance between the bio bay, the narrow channel leading to the ocean and the exchange of water. The conditions for our bio bay are rare. Scientists say perhaps only six places in the world have bio bays like ours. The bio bay is a special thrill. You can go out on kayaks or on a ponton boat. It helps to have a red night headlight. FLY TO SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: You want to fly into Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (code SJU), the biggest airport in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. Low cost airlines that fly to San Juan, PR from the U.S. include AirTran (Southwest Airlines now owns them & their Rapid Rewards can be transfer to Air Tran) and Jet Blue. GETTING TO VIEQUES FROM SAN JUAN: Vieques is a small island 7 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico. You will land at the San Juan international airport about an hour northwest along the coast from Vieques. To get to Vieques after you land in San Juan, you need to choose between a ferry from Farjado; OR a short small airplane ride from one of three airports: 1) International Airport in San Juan; 2) Isla Grande Airport in San Juan; and 3) Ceiba Airport, 10 minutes south from Farjado ferry dock. Flights into Vieques run from 6:15 a.m . to 7:30 p.m. (depending on which airport) & out of Vieques’ only airport, 7 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. All these airplanes are 8-10 seaters. There are enough options to coordinate with your flight into San Juan, as long as you fly in time to connect to a flight or ferry. Book this leg of the trip in coordination with your main flight. If necessary, you can consider spending a night in the airport at the Best Western, or taking the opportunity to go into nearby historic & charming Old San Juan. It is less expensive to fly to Vieques from San Juan, if you switch from the international airport and take a $18 cab to the “Isla Grande” airport—you’ll think you’re in a Humphrey Bogart movie when you get there. Taxi vans (called PUB-LEE-COS) at the San Juan International Airport, just outside of the baggage pick up area exit, can take you to this smaller airport (or anywhere on the big island). It’s the same airlines, and the same planes, just less airport taxes. Flying from “Isla Grande” airport can cost $ 40 less, each way. FROM SAN JUAN INTERNATIONAL: To fly directly from San Juan international to Vieques, costs about $100 – 130 each way, depending on if you are buying one way or round trip, and which airlines you use. You can see the combined schedule of all the airlines in the Vieques Events (JUSTIN: internal LINK TO SCAN I have ATTACHed), but you must call the airlines, as times do change. Planes can fill up fast because they are small, so make your reservations immediately. Most regular flights are on Vieques Air Link**, Air Flamenco, Seaborne (only on Thurs. & Sun.) & Cape Air** (which offers a coupon book of 10 one-ways—around $ 77 each) that can be used by multiple passengers, and either direction, expires in 1 year.) Rosita’s personal favorites = **. FROM “ISLA GRANDE” AIRPORT IN SAN JUAN: To fly to Vieques from the little Isla Grande Airport, costs about $ 75 – 100, each way, depending on if you are buying one-way or round trip, and which airlines. Regular flights from this airport are on Vieques Air Link & Air Flamenco. (Cape Air & Seaborne do not fly from this airport.) Take a $18 taxi van (called PUB-LEE-COS) to this airport from the international airport, outside the baggage area (15 + minute drive depending on traffic). FROM CIEBA AIRPORT: Take a taxi van 1 hour/40 minutes south of San Juan International to the Ceiba airport (about 5 miles south of the Farjado ferry) and take a 10 minute flight for about $25 – 35 one way. Call airlines below, English spoken at all the toll free numbers. Vieques Air Link Toll free reservations: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)ck up local office in a pinch: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). This is the cheapest route if you have the time & especially if you are a group. Taxi vans (called PUB-LEE-COS) at the San Juan International Airport, just outside of the baggage pick up area exit, can take you to the Ferry dock in Fajado (no more than 1.5 hours), for a set fee of $80—which can be shared by a group that presents itself together—ask on your flight into San Juan if anyone wants to share a taxi van to Farjado (pronounced FAR-HAD-DO). There is usually a tourist aide who speaks English at a stand right there on the sidewalk and can show you the published rates. Once in Farjado, the ferry is very inexpensive, $2 one-way or $4 round trip. The office to buy tickets is across the street and around the corner in a trailer with a metal canopy. The other direction across the street is a breakfast/lunch coffee shop/café. There is a pizza joint inside the Farjado ferry station. The ferry ride can be 45 minutes or 1.5 hours—see the schedule—depending on which ferry you take. Note: Very occasionally, the ferries are delayed or full, or canceled for bad weather. The Fajado Inn is recommended in such rare instances. Note: the ferry ride can be very pretty standing outside (the new cargo ferries don’t allow one to stand outside, but do offer great seats & a group TV). Rough weather can cause the ferry to be choppy. Both cargo & passenger ferries take passengers, but on the cargos there are substantially less passengers. Buy tickets only in person. The new cargo ferries don’t allow one to stand outside, but do offer great seats & a group TV, and go twice as fast. Rentals are not allowed on the ferry! Note: when the cargo ferry gets their fill of cars, they leave early, and if transporting gasoline, they will further limit passengers—about once a week, one ferry. Farjado also has ferry’s to other destinations. There is an area on the left of the ferry dock station for passengers going to Cuelebra. Vieques passengers leave from the right side of the inside of the station. Vieques cargo ferries leave from outside the station across from where you bought the tickets. Vehicles load first, and then passengers. On all ferry’s the elderly and women with children are given preference. Here, a ferry is called (LA-LAN-CHA). The Casa de Kathy website is praised for being one of the most helpful sites for Vieques tourist information. Here is some of what you will find on the site: Vieques is a beautiful tropical island, 20 miles long and 4 miles wide, known for its pristine, sparsely populated beaches which attracts thousands of tourists each year. Vieques has been voted the Best Island in the Caribbean by the Travel and Leisure magazine. There are many good beaches within walking distance including Esperanza Beach (7 minutes walking), Sun Bay, Media Luna & Navio (between 20 to 60 minutes walking), Coco Beach (5 minutes). Very good snorkeling can be found on Cayo Afuera (Outside Key) right off Esperanza beach. In addition to the these beaches, taxis are available for visiting the Fish and Wildlife Refuge beaches. At Refuge beaches, you will find excellent snorkeling, especially at Playa Caracas (Red Beach) and at Playa La Chiva (Blue Beach). You need a car or bike to get to these beaches. Taxis to Red Beach: $30 for two people. Bikes for rent on the premises. One of Vieques' most famous and enjoyable attractions is the “Bio-Bay". It is best experienced with little or no moon. There is one “electric boat tour" which is operated by Island Adventures. With the kayak tours, you paddle your kayaks out a short distance from the shore and see the fish light up as they swim past. You may also arrange a horseback-riding tour with Esperanza Riding Company. I can also recommend a trip to the Conde Mirasol Fort & Museum and the Punta Mula Lighthouse in Isabel II and to the Puerto Ferro archaeological site north of the entrance to Sun Bay. In the west, visit the 375 year old ceiba tree, Mosquito pier, the ecumenical chapel & Laguna Kiani. There area several good restaurants and bars on the boardwalk and street vendors on the weekends. On weekends, there is often live music at one or two places, I have lots of tourist information and will gladly help you make the best out of your visit to beautiful Vieques. If I am going to the beach or the store, you can accompany me. At Casa de Kathy, Mi Casa es Tu Casa (My home is your home). We have been operating since 2003. The SpaceViva Esperanza is a newly renovated 900 sq ft first floor 2 Bedroom apartment in the quaint fishing village of Esperanza, on the Caribbean (south) side of Vieques. We are an easy 10 minute walk to the Malecon (waterfront w/ restaurants, bars, shops). It is also just a short walk to beautiful local beaches (Esperanza beach 10 min; the Cayo 15 min, Sun Bay 20 min; Media Luna 30 min & Navio 45 min-1 hr), two piers to watch awesome sunsets, groceries, bakeries, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding and bio bay tours (all bio luminescent bay tour companies meet here in Esperanza, only a few blocks away). The ferry dock in Isabel II and the Vieques airport are a quick 15 minute drive away (we can recommend taxi company for arrival/departure if you do not have a car rental). We are also only a 5-10 minute drive to main entrance of the largest nature reserve in the entire Caribbean - the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. Within the refuge you will find some of the most gorgeous untouched Caribbean beaches you have ever seen, such as - Playa Caracas (Red Beach), Playuela (Garcia Beach), Pata Prieta (Secret Beach), Bahia de la Chiva (Blue Beach), La Plata (Silver Beach) and Escondida. There is no development within the reserve area, so all of the beaches are in their beautiful natural state, and all you will see for miles is white sand, turquoise sea, rolling green hills, and palm trees. This is the Caribbean the way it used to be, before mass tourism. There are never any crowds, and you may even have the whole beach to yourself for a few hours as your own private tropical oasis. The entire apartment has been completely renovated and everything inside is new, including - comfortable furnishings and high quality mattresses (one Queen sized bed & one Full sized bed), ceramic tiles, a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a huge bathroom with a walk-in glass block shower, new ceiling fans throughout and air conditioners (in bedrooms only). It has been re-designed with a bright, airy floor plan, where the living, dining, and cooking areas flow together seamlessly, creating an open social space. The interior is decorated in a clean modern style with a focus on guest comfort. The kitchen is thoroughly stocked with everything you need to cook a great meal - a full sized stainless refrigerator & full stove/oven, pots, pans, utensils, plates, bowls, mugs, cups, wine glasses, toaster, and a coffee maker. All towels (for both bath & the beach) and 300 thread count 100% cotton bed linens are provided. We also offer complimentary beach gear, such as comfortable Tommy Bahama chairs, extra large beach umbrellas, coolers, and beach mats for all of your seaside adventures. There is a small library with books, cards and games for guest enjoyment. We have a brand new 40 inch flat screen smart TV in the living room which connects to the internet so that you can stream shows and movies through Roku, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu (account log in required), as well as high speed WIFI access, so you can surf the net from your laptop, tablet or phone. Esperanza is the only area on the island that is so easily accessible by foot or bike to so many beautiful beaches, attractions and amenities (the beaches on the south side near Esperanza and the Wildlife Reserve are the best on the island, hands down). It is a small Caribbean fishing village with a very unique Vieques flair. All of our neighbors are Viequense, and most of their families have lived here for generations. This is not an isolated resort area or a gated development. We are a very small friendly local community. Viva Esperanza is the perfect place for people who want to have an authentic Vieques experience - to walk around town to restaurants, bars, shops, and incredible beaches, to immerse themselves in the culture, meet neighbors, perhaps practice their Spanish, and see the island through the eyes of the people who live and work here everyday. As with every small town in Puerto Rico, there are many unique local sights, sounds and flavors - like the smell of slow cooked Sancocho on a Sunday afternoon, the sound of salsa or bachata playing on a tropical breeze, neighbors on Paso Fino horses trotting through town, children laughing and playing with their dogs, or the crow of a rooster welcoming a new day. Just a heads up: there are roosters everywhere in Vieques, in every single neighborhood no matter where you go, and it is a big part of our culture and island lifestyle. However, if you like to sleep late, the air conditioning will definitely block out any sounds, no problem. This is all a part of day to day life in Vieques, and it will be a part of your experience as well when you stay with us in Esperanza. Although the neighborhood is more active during the day, our neighbors usually go to bed early, so it is very quiet and peaceful at night, with only the sounds of the coqui frogs to lull you to sleep. Your hosts, Lauren and Edison, lived full time in Vieques for 5 years and over that time renovated this house with their own hands from the ground up, with much love, hard work, and support from friends, family and neighbors. Our dream was to create a small guest house in our home where visitors could experience and appreciate the unique spirit and magic of Vieques. It has been a true labor of love, on an island which we truly fell in love with, and are honored to share with you. Both of us have worked in the travel and hospitality industry for many years and have a passion for creating an awesome island experience for everyone who stays with us. We are more than happy to answer any questions you have and help you plan the best vacation possible. We love helping our guests explore our favorite parts of the island, and sharing all of the special places that make Vieques so beautiful and exceptional. Although we no longer live on Vieques full time, our property managers Janet & Ricky will be there to meet you at the house when you arrive, check you in and help you with anything that you need during your stay. They are a lovely Viequense couple who were raised here on the island and can give you all of the inside info that only a local can provide. They are fully bilingual in English and Spanish, live nearby and can be onsite if anything comes up, and they will definitely take great care of you during your stay. Please let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to give recommendations regarding travel logistics, sights, car, scooter or bike rentals, tours and outdoor adventures, restaurants, etc, or just point you in the direction of our favorite reef or untouched beach. We look forward to welcoming you into our home and sharing the incredible natural beauty of Vieques with you, your friends, and family! Guest Access. Interaction with Guests.
