The SpaceThe LIVING ROOM has a cushy recliner, a hand-made rocking chair, and a full-size super comfy couch with matching pillows in American Indian motif. There is a modern, windowed wood-stove and a hand-made desk with mirror and table lamp. Etchings and lithographs adorn the walls and bookshelves are loaded with good books. Tall, old-fashioned, handmade windows give plenty of light and great views of the wild mountains and a chandelier and kerosene lamps warm your nights. The KITCHEN has a new electric range and oven and an ample refrigerator and microwave. A vintage pie safe contains a complete set of cups, glasses, dishes and bowls, and a full set of cutlery. Pots, pans and skillets, a chopping board, and a variety of utensils are ready to use along with a set of knives, a coffee maker, and an espresso unit. There are twin sinks, cupboards for storage, and a table for four with straight back chairs. The BEDROOM is a rustic charmer with two Queen beds with luxurious mattresses, crisp linens, warm blankets and down comforters. It has a sturdy woodstove, a chest of drawers, and a built-in closet for clothing. The BATHROOM has a glass enclosed shower, a toilet, a sink with cabinet and mirror, a full-size storage cabinet, and a ventilation window. The GYM has a Universal exercise machine, a free weight set, and a bench. Our SAUNA is a point of pride, with a woodstove heater and polished oak benches that easily seat six. It has an insulated ceiling paneled in cedar, an air-tight double-paned window and electric light. The floor is masoned mica schist as is the wall behind the exhaust chimney. It's the height of luxury on cool evenings. All rooms are carpeted, or have decorative rugs, or both. Windows are snugly fitted and can be opened as desired. Log walls are clean and polished and the roof is insulated to be cool in summer and warm in winter. (URL HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) * We have two other accomodations for overflow bookings: The Bunk House and Jim's Summer Place. Both are sturdy, hand-built, comfortable log cabins, situated up in the quiet woods above the main cabins but without the cushy amenities of the Winter Palace. The Bunk House has a small kitchen with an old Monarch woodstove, and a living room/bedroom with a bunk bed and full size mattresses, a comfy large chair, a chest of drawers, and a small, efficient wood stove to take the chill off spring or fall mornings. There is no running water but there is a functional outhouse. Guests whose parents or friends are in the Winter Palace will use the facilities there. Jim's Summer Cabin is similar in layout but without the bunk beds. It has a small kitchen with a microwave, and the bedroom holds one Queen bed, suitable for two kids or an adult couple. Again, there is no running water or indoor toilet, but occupants can use Winter Palace facilities. We don't advertise these cabins for rent but either or both can be had with bedding and towels for $150 per night (three night minimum) or $700 per week. Guest AccessGuests have the full use of the cabin, porch, and surrounding grounds. Interaction with GuestsWe are on the property from time to time during Spring, Summer, and Fall in our own Main cabin. If we're away we can be reached in Helena on our home ph(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). The NeighborhoodThe ranch is on the Sun River, directly below the soaring crags and ramparts of the Rocky Mountain Front. Our cabins, surrounded by Doug Fir and Limber Pine forest, are in de facto wilderness where grizzly forage and elk bugle in the rut, and Canada geese make sky music in the fall. The confusion and cares of modern city life are far away and there are no neighbors. At the ranch you feel the joy, peace and serenity of true wild country, and you might imagine that you are living in the land as it was when only the Blackfeet set their lodges here pursuing the vast herds of buffalo. Getting AroundThe Sun Canyon road to the ranch is good but there are very few roads on The Front and no public transportation. You arrive by car and you're on your own. The road to Gibson Lake and the Bob Marshall trailhead seven miles west is paved in the National Forest, our western property line. Other Things to NoteThe ranch is 18 miles northwest of the little ranching town of Augusta, home of the largest one-day rodeo in Montana. We are at the very edge of the Lewis and Clark National Forest and a good road leads to Gibson Lake that borders the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Many outdoor activities are at your door step, such as hiking, photography, running or biking. Also, there are over 1,000 miles of wilderness trails close by in the Lewis and Clark National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Plus, there are fishing, hunting and skiing opportunities in season. There are very few places to stay located on the Rocky Mountain Front. It is sparsely populated with plenty of wildlife viewing, including: mule and white tail deer, elk, many varieties of birds, grizzly and black bears, chipmunks, rabbits and squirrels. For those times you prefer to be cozy and stay indoors, the interior is comfortable and inviting, with quality furniture, and fully-equipped kitchen(s). The area is very quiet if you are looking for some writing or other creative time. The Retreat has just been upgraded with high speed internet and two flat screen TVs for streaming from the internet, together with DVD players for watching movies. High speed WiFi is available, as is a land line phone for local calls. Introductory pricing from $120 to 220 per night (plus cleaning fee and taxes). • The Rocky Mountain Front Retreat offers two suites: The Elk Suite and the Grizzly Suite. • Both suites together (this site) can accommodate up to 11 guests. • If you are interested in the one bedroom Grizzly Suite that can accommodate up to 5 guests, please see: vrbo #822351 • If you are interested in the two bedroom Elk Suite that can accommodate up to 6 guests, please see: vrbo #822466 The two suites are private and fully separated from each, joined only by a large common entry area containing the laundry and some reading/games materials. The Dupuyer Cache Cabin is over one hundred years old, artistically restored with many modern comforts. Just 12 miles from the Continental Divide, you can awaken to a spectacular view of Old Man of the Hills. Escape the city lights and traffic congestion with a stay in the sparsely populated region of the East Front of the Rocky Mountains minutes from Glacier National Park. Ivan Doig, the Nationally awarded author, describes Dupuyer in its earlier day glory magnificently in his autobiographical story This House of Sky. Dupuyer is also the inspiration in his fiction books descriptions and details of English Creek (Dupuyer Creek) and of the community of Gros Ventre. Perhaps you want to unwind from City life, take time for personal introspection and relaxation, read a good book or breathe plenty of fresh mountain air. The Cabin is artistically decorated and furnished, including arts and crafts from many Montana artists and artisans. In nearby Dupuyer (about 1/2 mile) is located Dupuyer Cache, the retail outlet for Beaverslide Dry Goods merino wool yarn, a bonanza for knitting and crocheting enthusiasts. This is a non-smoking household and is also pet free within TheCabin. Please, in respect to others and potential allergies, no smoking or pets inside the Cabin. Although children may certainly enjoy a wilderness experience, they must be supervised by an adult at all times. The Cabin is comfortable but also rustic and old without modern guidelines or safety features. Dupuyer Creek runs through the property attracting wildlife and fishing opportunities. Each season in this part of the country is unique, nature and wildlife abound. The Rocky Mountains and riparian areas provide ideal habitats. Large predators such as Grizzly Bears and Mountain Lions have been seen on location. Whitetail and Mule deer are spotted regularly. You may catch a glimpse of bobcat, fox, coyote, skunk, badger, cotton tail rabbits and Jack rabbits, chipmunk, and many more animals. A multitude of birds migrate through the area. Canadian Geese and Sandhill Cranes have been seen nesting. Raptors (Bald and Golden Eagles and a variety of hawk species) fly overhead in the Big Montana Sky. Many smaller birds from Meadowlark to Mountain Bluebird to Chickadee and hummingbirds can be spotted regularly.
