The SpaceSuitable for a couple or one guest - the queen size bed is fitted with wool underlay and electric blanket....we are told it's a very comfortable bed. The room is large (4m x 4m) with high ceiling - very spacious. Bedside tables, small desk, wardrobe and dresser complete the space. The Victorian style open fire with tiled and wood surround is a special feature, and we encourage guests to use it. Firewood and instructions are provided. As well as warming the room in winter, it gives a lovely romantic ambience. An electric heater is also provided for easy convenience. Please note that because this is an old house, there is only one shared bathroom. It has a tiled floor (with underfloor heating) & features separate shower, claw-foot bath, toilet & wash basin. We encourage our guests to be part of our family and to share our lounge, kitchen /dining and outside living areas. A favorite spot is our sunny front verandah for morning coffees. Our back lawn has a large rustic picnic table for lunches on nice warm days - and Zoe, our little Jack Russell dog, will entertain you with her tricks in an attempt to beg some food from you! Guest AccessWe are happy to share the kitchen, dining and lounge rooms with our guests - we like people to feel at home, as if you were our family friends! One very friendly Jack Russell dog (Zoe) & 2 cats will greet you at the back door! Just make sure the gate is latched after you enter, because Zoe's nickname is Houdini, the escape artist! ;-) In the house there is a shared bathroom complete with large claw-foot bath, tiled shower, handbasin and toilet. An additional toilet is in the outside laundry. There's plenty of parking available on the grass in front of the house, or in our driveway. Please enjoy our garden areas - feel free to use the picnic tables and chairs. Interaction with GuestsWe lead busy lives but when we are home we are happy to interact with our guests as much or as little as they wish. We love hearing about other places and the travel stories and experiences of others, being keen travellers ourselves. Our little Jack Russell terrier, Zoe just loves to interact with guests too! She'll oblige with tricks in exchange for treats ;-) If you wish to know anything about the area or the local amenities, just ask us. We can suggest many places and activities that may be of interest. The NeighborhoodWe live right in the Fairlie township in a large old villa on a 1/4 acre (1010 sq.m) section in a spacious residential area. Our lush cottage garden is full of flowers and blossoms in spring. Just 50m away is the historic Fairlie Museum with a cafe right beside it. The Red Stag restaurant (licensed) is just on the other side of the museum. The village centre has a supermarket, bakery, post shop, cafes, petrol stations, two hotels and an assortment of shops - all within 700m from our house. In winter, the Mount Dobson skifield access road is reached in just 10 minutes by car along a sealed highway. Lake Opuha is 15 minutes away by car - a great spot for boating and fishing. The Fairlie town is small (population around 750) and rural and surrounded by mountains - in less than 5 minutes you can be enjoying open countryside, walking or biking alongside the Opihi river, or relaxing in great cafes with superb coffee and locally-made food. The local 18 hole golf course welcomes visitors. Lake Tekapo is a very popular nearby tourist destination just 30 minutes drive west by car, with spectacular mountain and lake views. It is well known for stargazing tours at the nearby Mount John observatory, and for alpine hot pools on the lake shore. The Round Hill skifield is close by, and there are lots of hiking and mountain biking tracks in the area. Getting AroundThere is no public transport in Fairlie. It's only a short walk to anywhere within the Fairlie village. To go anywhere outside of Fairlie really does require your own transportation. Two bus services between Christchurch and Queenstown stop in Fairlie. They both cover the Christchurch - Queenstown route and return to Christchurch daily. Safety tips for overseas drivers:- * Stay Left! In NZ we drive on the left side of the road. It can be easy to forget especially with our lower traffic numbers! * Watch the Road! Our awesome scenery often distracts overseas drivers. It's safer to pull over and stop to look and take photos. * Park Safely! Stop well clear of highways when stopping. While we don't have as many cars on our roads as you might be used to, they travel fast! Open highway speed is 100 kph. * Use footpaths and walkways! It is very unsafe to walk on our highways. If it is unavoidable, walk on the RIGHT side of the road facing oncoming traffic and wear bright coloured clothes. Carry a light at night. Have a safe and enjoyable journey! :-) Other Things to NoteWe are keen hikers, mountain bikers and skiers and happy to share our knowledge of our lovely region. Excellent star gazing can be had on clear nights. Ask us about our favorite nearby hill location for best night sky viewing! ;-)

The SpaceThe 2 Station Huts were originally built in the 1900s as 'single man's quarters', for shepherds working on Four Peaks Station. We upgraded, re-lined and insulated, them 5 years ago. Situated on our working sheep & cattle station, these quaint rustic huts are cosy and comfortable in a rural setting, in the hills beyond Lake Opuha. Guest AccessThe Huts each have a verandah to sit and admire the view from. Because we are a working farm there are Health & Safety hazards so guests can only use the Hut area for their stay - it has a lawn and native garden to enjoy, and the donkey in the paddock next door is always up for a pat or an apple, or both! Interaction with GuestsWe will welcome you on arrival, and are happy to answer any questions of what to see and do in the area, and then leave you to enjoy your own space. There is a kitchenette with microwave, small oven & gas element cooktops in Hut No.1 for use by both Huts. We will leave a continental self-serve breakfast for you. Check out is 10.00am The NeighborhoodThe historic Station Huts give you a taste of living on a working farm, you may be woken by birdsong, sheep-dogs, or the tractor as the farmer starts his busy day! Four Peaks Station is 5,300 hectares running sheep, cattle and deer and employs 3 full-time staff. The Station Huts are situated near the homestead, the business base of the farm. The nights here are quiet, no road or street noise, only the river nearby and the odd farm animal chatter. The sky is truly spectacular on a clear night, the Mackenzie area being famous as one of the best star-gazing places in the world. The nearby Lake Opuha built in 1995 as an irrigation lake, is safe, warm and ideal for boating, fishing, swimming and general recreation. Only 15 minutes drive away is our service town of Fairlie with a population of approx 800. The town centre of Fairlie has a supermarket, medical centre, post shop agent, pharmacy, hotels, cafes and a now-famous bakery producing award winning gourmet pies! There are several skifields in the area - the Mt Dobson access road is 15 minutes west of us, then 15 minutes on unsealed road to the field; the Fox Peak Skifield is 10 minutes north of us, and another 10 minutes up the skifield road, only open at the weekends; and Round Hill skifield is near Tekapo. There are several hiking and mountain biking options in the area. Four Peaks High Country Track is a 4 day/night walk or bike ride over our station, operating in summer. That could be an option for your next visit to the area! There are a number of artists living and working in the area - Randall Froude in Kimbell and Julie Greig in Burkes Pass are 2 of them. The historic Fairlie Museum is well worth a visit particularly if you enjoy vintage and classic cars, and with it's welcoming cafe attached. Fairlie also has an 18 hole golf course, a modern swimming pool complex and squash club facilities. If you are here in winter you might like to join the lively parochial Mackenzie Ram Rugby supporters and watch a game of rugby on their home turf! Of course Lake Tekapo, another popular tourist destination is only 40 minutes drive, with stunning lake & mountain views. Here you can take a star-gazing tour at the Mt John Observatory, visit the famous Church of the Good Shepherd on the lake edge, and top your day off with a soak in the Tekapo Springs alpine hot pools. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation in the area, you need your own means of transport. We have plenty of safe off-road parking. Tips for overseas drivers: - drive on the LEFT side of the road - it's illegal to use your cell phone while driving - pull over and stop to take photos or admire the scenery
