Description
The Space

The 2 Station Huts were originally built in the 1900s as 'single man's quarters', for shepherds working on Four Peaks Station. We upgraded, re-lined and insulated, them 5 years ago. Situated on our working sheep & cattle station, these quaint rustic huts are cosy and comfortable in a rural setting, in the hills beyond Lake Opuha.

Guest Access

The Huts each have a verandah to sit and admire the view from. Because we are a working farm there are Health & Safety hazards so guests can only use the Hut area for their stay - it has a lawn and native garden to enjoy, and the donkey in the paddock next door is always up for a pat or an apple, or both!

Interaction with Guests

We will welcome you on arrival, and are happy to answer any questions of what to see and do in the area, and then leave you to enjoy your own space. There is a kitchenette with microwave, small oven & gas element cooktops in Hut No.1 for use by both Huts. We will leave a continental self-serve breakfast for you. Check out is 10.00am

The Neighborhood

The historic Station Huts give you a taste of living on a working farm, you may be woken by birdsong, sheep-dogs, or the tractor as the farmer starts his busy day! Four Peaks Station is 5,300 hectares running sheep, cattle and deer and employs 3 full-time staff. The Station Huts are situated near the homestead, the business base of the farm. The nights here are quiet, no road or street noise, only the river nearby and the odd farm animal chatter. The sky is truly spectacular on a clear night, the Mackenzie area being famous as one of the best star-gazing places in the world. The nearby Lake Opuha built in 1995 as an irrigation lake, is safe, warm and ideal for boating, fishing, swimming and general recreation. Only 15 minutes drive away is our service town of Fairlie with a population of approx 800. The town centre of Fairlie has a supermarket, medical centre, post shop agent, pharmacy, hotels, cafes and a now-famous bakery producing award winning gourmet pies! There are several skifields in the area - the Mt Dobson access road is 15 minutes west of us, then 15 minutes on unsealed road to the field; the Fox Peak Skifield is 10 minutes north of us, and another 10 minutes up the skifield road, only open at the weekends; and Round Hill skifield is near Tekapo. There are several hiking and mountain biking options in the area. Four Peaks High Country Track is a 4 day/night walk or bike ride over our station, operating in summer. That could be an option for your next visit to the area! There are a number of artists living and working in the area - Randall Froude in Kimbell and Julie Greig in Burkes Pass are 2 of them. The historic Fairlie Museum is well worth a visit particularly if you enjoy vintage and classic cars, and with it's welcoming cafe attached. Fairlie also has an 18 hole golf course, a modern swimming pool complex and squash club facilities. If you are here in winter you might like to join the lively parochial Mackenzie Ram Rugby supporters and watch a game of rugby on their home turf! Of course Lake Tekapo, another popular tourist destination is only 40 minutes drive, with stunning lake & mountain views. Here you can take a star-gazing tour at the Mt John Observatory, visit the famous Church of the Good Shepherd on the lake edge, and top your day off with a soak in the Tekapo Springs alpine hot pools.

Getting Around

There is no public transportation in the area, you need your own means of transport. We have plenty of safe off-road parking. Tips for overseas drivers: - drive on the LEFT side of the road - it's illegal to use your cell phone while driving - pull over and stop to take photos or admire the scenery
