The SpaceUpon arrival, let the red cinder path be your yellow brick road as you are lead through the jungle to your personal paradise. At ground level you will encounter a hanging bed, suspended beneath the floor of your new living quarters. Stop and relax or continue up the staircase to the trapdoor. It is through this trapdoor that you are allowed access to the lanai amongst the canopy of trees. A beautiful wrap around lanai allows for a 360 degree view of the lush jungle, while two sliding glass doors grant access to the bedroom. Upon entering, you will notice that the generous windows and doors allow for natural sunlight to flood into the house, complementing the bamboo fixtures and vintage 1970s wallpaper that backs the bed. The white bed linens reflect the light giving a dreamy, cloud-like aura to the space. There is counter stocked with a local coffee and snacks nestled into a corner of the house and overlooked by the handcrafted porthole windows. Bamboo backed cubby holes and hangers furnish the wall behind you and create an elegant, minimalist closet space for you to store your personal items for the duration of your stay. Just past the closet is a sliding door that accesses one of the most fun areas of the house: the bathroom. The bathroom jalousie windows stretch from the floor to the ceiling and the horizontal glass plates open up, creating an indoor-outdoor effect. Naturally caught rainwater cascades from the large shower head above before disappearing into the floor boards below. You'll notice that the natural theme spills over into the bathroom with sustainable cork board backing the shower and air plants intermittently growing throughout. The toilet and hand-made rock sink in the corner make use of grey water eco-principles by allowing you to wash your hands with fresh water before it goes on to fill the bowl. One of the most fun aspects of this property is that it allows you the opportunity to experience true off-grid living without sacrificing any of the comforts of normal life. Natural lighting, solar power and rain water catchment are the three principles that have been integrated into this tree top design, making it almost like a living organism itself. The beauty of this high flying haven is in the details. I spent the better part of three months personally constructing the building as well as the accessories inside. My goal was to create a customized and secluded space for your occasion. The chandelier, hanging lights, port-hole windows, rock sink and platform bed were all DIY projects that I specifically created to enhance your experience. The bamboo pillars that 'support' the lanai and the moss carpet under the hanging bed were harvested from local areas on the Big Island. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION Don't worry, the capital letters are just to emphasize importance. I'm not mad at you. But please read this entire section before making a reservation. As lush and inviting as the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse is, there are inevitable 'challenges' that come with staying in an off-grid treehouse in the Hawaiian jungle. My goal is give you an experience that combines adventure and luxury so I want to make sure that you are aware of the following things: 1. The treehouse is about 15-feet off the ground and is only accessible by the 'ladder-stairs'. 'Ladder-stairs' is just another way of saying 'very steep' stairs. There is a hand railing and none of my visitors have ever had a problem going up and down, but all luggage will need to be carried up via this access point. Only those who believe they are physically capable should book a stay. Just remember to go up and down facing them... like a ladder! 2. The running water comes from the rain falling on the roof and is not treated; therefore, the water is not potable. I will provide several bottles of drinking water. 3. The electricity you use is generated by sunlight and is stored in a battery. Once the battery runs out of power it has to recharge. This shouldn’t happen but just be mindful not to leave lights or power hungry items running for extended periods of time (mo hairdryers). The windows allow for plenty of light during the day. 4. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! Realize that the pitter-patter on the roof is the rain's first stop on its journey to the water tanks and then to your shower. Also notice how warm it is. Don't think of rain as a trip ruiner but instead an asset to be enjoyed! 5. There are bugs but this isn't the Amazon. For such a tropical climate you will be surprised at how few bugs there are. The main things you will see are moths, fruit flies (due to fruit falling off of the trees) and mosquitoes. Bug repellent is provided but it never hurts to bring your own. They really don't get that bad but their presence increases after a hard rain and during the twilight hours. Luckily, the hanging bed has mosquito netting that drapes down to encompass it. 6. Noises. Living off-grid in the jungle also brings about its own set of noises. The water pump and solar inverter will make soft noises throughout the day as they are used. The falling fruit from the vivie trees can also be alarming if you don't know what it is, and at night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. Rustling branches, grunts and squeals typically means that the cute family of wild pigs is nearby. They are harmless and will runoff as soon as they sense your presence. Quietly grab the binoculars and, if you are lucky, may catch a glimpse of them! All of these aspects are what makes this place so unique and, with the right mindset, only enhance your overall experience. Guests have free range to fully utilize every aspect of the house. The hanging bed, wrap-around porch, indoor-outdoor shower and closet are at your full disposal. I have recently installed a kitchenette that has a sink, cooler for storing food/drinks, and a coffee maker (also capable of heating up water). Any and all goodies stocked in the house are there for your enjoyment. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Indoor/Outdoor Shower •Toilet with Overlaid Sink •Organic Shampoo/Conditioner •Towels •Ample Parking •Tiki Torch ‘Flashlights’ •Hanging Bed •Table and Chairs for Lanai •Binoculars •Several Books •Outlets (3-prong and USB) •Kitchen Sink •Coffee Maker •Clean Linens •Gramophone Music Player for iPhones •Cooler for Food/Drink •Card Game Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. My goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable so you can always contact me via phone or email. Because I do not live on the island year round, a local neighbor can assist you if you have any problems that need tending to. Upon your arrival I can arrange to have someone greet you and show you the property or simply stow away the key for your convenience. The choice, of course, is yours. Even though I am not on site, I can always be reached. Feel free to call/text/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. I will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied. The treehouse is located at the end of a neighborhood street making it very private. It is set about 50 yards off the street behind a windy, jungle path further adding to your privacy. There are only about five full time neighbors scattered throughout the neighborhood so don't expect to see a lot of people. The treehouse is about 20 miles from Hilo, 23 miles from Pahoa, 12 miles from Keaau and 8 miles from Volcano. Volcano is the closest place for laundry, good restaurants and groceries, though you will pay a little more for the groceries than in Hilo or Keaau. I recommend you stop on your way in from Hilo. When you book I will include a guidebook that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park. Numerous opportunities for sightseeing and adventures are within a 40 minute drive of this treehouse paradise and they will be included in my guest guidebook as well. This is the ultimate spot for couples seeking romantic seclusion in the middle of a tropical jungle or individuals who want to escape the world. Unless you feel like hitchhiking, you will definitely need a rental car to comfortably explore the surrounding areas and access the treehouse. While nothing is 'far' on the big island, everything is just a bit out of reach by foot... except of course for those lovely, yet dense, jungle strolls. The SpaceThis charming and private bedroom/bathroom studio cottage sits 60 feet from the main house on our 3 acres of beautiful rain forest. The studio cottage includes a very comfortable queen bed, fan, UV filtered rain water, and hot showers, towels, bed linens, drinking water, soap, shampoo, blow dryer, etc. If your vacation plans include cooking your own meals, kitchen privileges at the "big" house are available. If you enjoy doing laundry on your vacation - we have state of the art washer and dryer available (and bio-degradable laundry detergent). Our temperatures are cool at night and pleasant during the day. The rain forest includes fresh clean air, lots of lush tropical foliage, beautiful anthuriums, hapu`u ferns, birds, crickets, and coqui frog - we enjoy their singing - and they are not too numerous. Star filled nights are also a bonus. Must love dogs goes without saying when staying at our house. They are our fur kids and family. Our pack has grown to include 4 dogs and 2 cats. They roam our property freely as do our guests. We have two very friendly mixed black labs, Miles and Ranger. We found them wandering near our home in fall of 2011 when they were 8 weeks old. We also have two cats, Xyla (3yrs) and Bruce (5yrs)- Xyla we found on the rain forest trail and Bruce, our daughter "loaned us" from Honolulu. In February of 2014 we added a new member to our pack, Lavender. A 2 yr old whippet/pit mix. She's a sweetheart. We adopted her from Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary. In June 2014 - we added Hank, a 1yr lab/shepherd mix. Brian would see him occasionally when he took the country road to work. After seeing the abandoned dog on and off for about 6 weeks - Brian was finally able to make that special connection. Hank got close enough to be pet, and has wanted to be pet ever since! Lazy Acres Golf, Grog, & Sliders Club (as we affectionately refer to our oasis) has no neighbors on the right side of us for 3 lots and none on the left side of us for 3 lots. Very private. Very quiet and peaceful. We are located 10 miles from Volcanoes National Park, historic Volcano Village, Volcano Arts Gallery, and Thai Thai restaurant. We are 23 miles from Hilo, about a 75 minute drive to Mauna Kea's summit and a 2 hour drive to the beautiful Kohala Coast. We believe the best type of vacation to the big island involves staying on both sides to avoid lots of driving. We spend a lot of time hiking at the Volcanoes Park. We know this area very well and have maps, pictures, stories, etc to help you get the most out of your stay. Nearby public transit is 3 miles down our country road. We do not use public transit on the Big Island but several people do. Our home is a joy in progress. Our water supply is from our 12,000 gallon catchment tank. We use propane fuel to heat our water and for our oven. Our current projects include clearing a driveway on our recently purchased 3 acre lot, deconstructing and reconstructing a yurt on this new property, finishing construction of our new carport (done!), constructing a hammock haven (almost complete), remodeling our bathroom (haven't started yet), new counter top in our kitchen, constant maintenance, and yard work. We are geo-cachers and adventurers. We thrive in the rain forest where we do things pono, embracing nature and the aloha spirit. Guest AccessGuests have access to the decks on the main house, A`a Casbah, Hammock Haven, Ohia Oasis, kitchen, our lovely and always heated spa, and are free to roam the property. Interaction with GuestsWe are as available to our guests as they want us to be. We respect one another's privacy and also enjoy each other's company. We work full time and are not on property during the day unless it's our day off. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. We enjoy the remoteness the Fern Forest offers and the eclectic group of people living here. We are 10 miles from the nearest restaurant. Our guests have been raving about Thai Thai restaurant in Volcano. We love it, too. Ohelo Cafe is a favorite of ours and typically crowded. It's in Volcano Village and you will want to make a reservation. They have great wood fired pizzas, fresh fish, beef, pork, and vegetarian entrees. We also enjoy a glass of wine at Volcano House in the park. We go when it's dark and enjoy a glass of Meomi while admiring Halema`uma`u's glow. We recently had breakfast at Kilauea Lodge and found it delicious and delightful. We also dined there for Brian's birthday - their prices make it special occasion for dinner for our budget, but they never disappoint. Restaurants close early around here and hours fluctuate. Be sure to be thinking about getting dinner between 6 and 8pm. The military camp at VNP also has dining options. Cafeteria and Bowling aisle style. The Lava Rock cafe located in Volcano Village is also an option if you're looking for a place to eat. Just remember, don't put off eating for too long, otherwise your best option will be a frozen pizza that we will bake for you :). Getting AroundPublic transportation is 3 miles from our house. Not particularly convenient. This is not the place to stay if you are relying on public transportation. Other Things to NoteAs part of our "pay it forward" practices, we donate $5.00 of every night's stay to Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary. This is a beautiful "no kill" animal shelter in Kurtistown, HI. (about 7 miles from us). We adopted Lavender from these fabulous folks. The nights are cool and the stars bright. It is the rainforest and you can expect it will rain. Be sure and pack your rain gear when heading our way. When the sun shines, look for rainbows!

We certainly have our opinions post arrival for destinations and activities; although our active lifestyle (we are not retired) may not allow for daily commentary. The NeighborhoodThe Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. The "Hottest Show in Hawaii" is the Lava Flow 61G. Almost all of the volcanic activity happens in this region. Beginning June 24, 2016, the current lava flow IS accessible to hikers and entered the Pacific waters around July 26, 2016; Pele will determine her timeline and longevity and destination path. View lava by land, air or SEA. The area also contains the largest remaining untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death as scientist scramble to discover the source and cure. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts. -Locals Beach Parks: Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Kehena Black Sands/Black Sands & green sea turtles, Green Sands, plus. -Warm Pools: Ahalanui, Kapoho Bay/Champagne Ponds, Pohoiki, plus. -Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Kalapana, plus. -AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale. -Reference books and maps are provided for your use. The current Lava Flow no longer threatens businesses or residents in Lower Puna/Pahoa area. Kilauea Volcano, in Haleamaumau Crater is experiencing levels of red lava lake activity. At around 50-100 ft below the Crater floor, she is spectacular for day and night viewing in Hawaii Volcanos National Park, particularly during a new moon! For the past 32 years since the Eruption began, our neighborhood on the slopes of Kilauea/Pu'u O'o has NOT been in the flow path. Getting AroundNormally distance/mileage matches drive time in east Hawaii Island due to the smaller population base and distinctly less traveled paths; with the exception of early morning drive time, 6am-8am. Hawaii Island public transportation bus service is limited to the major roadways around the island and as such does not service this neighborhood; 5 miles off Hwy 11. 15-20 miles in any direction from Eco Hale you typically will find much different weather patterns and vegetation growth. Eco Hale is Half Way between Hilo (shopping, provisions & mostly *** star dining at **-**** star pricing) and Hawaii Volcano National Park (stunning, inspiring, $$$$ dining and 4 star quality). Stargazers info: a 4-wheel drive is required to visit the Observatories atop Mauna Kea summit (43 miles from Hilo/70 miles from Kona) OR researching tour companies for a one evening trip may be most cost effective for you. Other Things to NoteSecure 4G Wireless WiFi provides Internet to our rural rainforest location and is currently at No Charge for ONE gig per booking accommodating email and general info. Almost "Digital-Detox", but up to you. Too slow for Media/Streaming. Example- Netflix, Hulu, Gaming, etc. Please let us know if you need to arrange additional gigs: payable before check out at $15 per gig. Various free Hotspots in Hilo, Volcano and the greater Puna area are additional options. Guest must bring their own lap top or NotePad. As a rural development "off-the-beaten track" your Holiday can be one of a kind but please remember, this is a Country Living location-Hawaiian style. The Space3 Acres of lush, park like landscape surrounds this charming vacation cottage located just 7 miles from Volcanoes National Park and quaint Volcano Village - a short 23 miles from Historic Hilo Town. Complete privacy in this newly renovated, comfortable cabin including a brand new bathroom and new kitchenette. Great for staying in to enjoy the rain forest or as base for exploring the island. Guest AccessThe cabin is completely detached from the main house which is owner occupied. Guests will have private, covered access as well as covered parking for one vehicle. Interaction with GuestsThe owners are retired professionals (a professor and a registered nurse) who will gladly provide conversation, direction and helpful hints to guests. They are happy to engage with guests if desired, but also free to provide complete privacy if that is preferred. The NeighborhoodVolcanoes National Park is the main attracted located just 7 miles from the property. It is open every day of the year for a nominal per car fee and it is free admission after 7:30 PM. There is a limited number of restaurants nearby including the Kilauea Lodge and Thai Thai, both located in Volcano VIllage. There is a golf course in Volcano which is surprisingly nice. We are 40 minutes from the Black Sand Beaches of Punalu'u and 23 miles from Rainbow Falls in Hilo. Akaka Falls is just past Hilo and something not to be missed. Hilo Bay Cafe or Cafe Pesto on the waterfront in Hilo are nice restaurants in town. Lucy's is the best Mexican taqueria outside of SoCal. We also recommend star gazing from our backyard on a clear night where you can see the Milky Way or for the more adventurous, from Mauna Kea which is approximately a 2 hour drive to the summit lookout. We are also a 2 hour drive to Kona. Getting AroundRental cars are strongly recommended for our island. Cars can be rented at either Hilo or Kona airports through all the national carriers. We are a 45 minute drive from the Hilo airport and a 2 hour drive from the Kona airport via the Saddle Road. Biking is a popular past time as well, but recommended for the serious enthusiast. There is a local public bus service that runs all the way around the island twice daily and stops on the highway approximately half a mile from our property. Other Things to NoteThe property is located in a park like setting that guests are welcome to enjoy and explore. Native trees and plants are abundant and weather is temperate all year long. Location is easy to find off the main highway and provides easy access to explore the volcano and surrounding environs. It is always good to be prepared on the Big Island for all types of weather. You can easily drive through hot sun and a quick rain shower in a matter of minutes. At night on the mountain it can be cool so layers and a hat are recommended.

Your private studio with large windows visually and energetically connect you to the volcano rainforest offers a premium Select Comfort Air Number Queen bed with dual controls. For more guests over two: ****additional fee of $16 per day for up to two children 12 years old and under, or one person age 13 years and over) or $45 per week flat rate**** A single air mattress can be set up with comfortable mattress topper that will sleep one adult or up to two small children: By request and must be arranged at least 24 hours prior to arrival. Wall-mounted 32" flat screen TV with Blu-Ray DVD Player and wide selection of DVDs are all within the studio. Basic internet access is provided via satellite: typically great for email access or basic internet surfing. We are proud of our water quality!! Wonderful rainwater (via catchment) is awesomely abundant on our property: No Water Issue Here!! The filtering system requires the water to pass through 2 Micron Filters (10 and 20 micron), a Carbon Filter (5 micron) and then zapped by a UV light system in order to provide quality drinking and washing water. No toxic chemicals used. To further maximize the level of quality drinking water we provide a SOMA Glass Carafe in the studio. After a long and/or vigorous day of hiking, you can ooze right into your own jacuzzi style tub in your upgraded master bathroom. And stay in it as long as you want: the tub's heater continues to keep the water luxuriously and comfortably hot. Your parking space is immediately adjacent to and exclusively reserved for your use, with additional nearby parking available on site. Your private lanai looks out to your very own portion of the mystically-inspiring Volcano Rainforest. This is the Real Deal! We are relatively remote and the road to our haven requires driving on dirt/gravel roads for about 1.5 miles. 3 miles from the nearest neighborhood convenience store (for the most basic of necessities; no organic items) with NO sidewalks or walking path aside from the roads that are either paved or dirt and gravel, and poor lighting makes it impractical --and not pedestrian-friendly to walk there and back in a timely manner for the average person. >>> If your food preferences are for quality fresh foods or organics, we heartily encourage planning on grocery shopping in Hilo before driving up. Contact us for suggestions on what stores might best serve you! For the adventurous type or those here to experience the many awesome 'nature' tourist attractions on the Big Island, our haven can provide a blissful, rejuvenating sanctuary after full days of vigorous explorations and adventuring. We are approximately: 6 minutes to highway, 11 minutes to Volcano National Park, 40 minutes to Hilo or Hilo Airport, 1 hour to South Point, Mauna Loa Volcano, and Kalapana, 1.5 hours to Kealakekua Bay, 2 hours to Waipio Valley, Waimea, Kohala, Waikoloa or Mauna Kea Volcano, 2.5 hours to Kona Airport/Kona. Rainforest Weather: We are in our rainy season for 2016, lasting towards the end of the year. Guests love being able to hear the sound of the rain on the roofs, looking out the multiple expanse of windows to see how mother nature provides its' own watering system for landscaping here :) Rainforest living often means outbursts of rain intermingled with sunny patches. The best we can offer regarding weather planning is to strongly encourage you to check your most reliable weather application online. Guest AccessThe laundry room is the only amenity that is shared- everything else is provided for you within your private studio and private parking space. We can arrange an agreed upon time frame and day for you to have full access, in advance. Hours for laundry: Starting time can be as early as 5am, last load must be completed by 6pm. As our Airbnb registered guest, an outstanding bonus included in your stay is the option of arranging for your free 30 minute, reinvigorating session to support your physical endurance and overall energy levels. Interaction with GuestsWe provide a 'meet and greet' upon your arrival, or the next morning (as arranged). Length of time can run as short as 5 minutes and up to a 40 minute orientation tailored to your needs to check you in and address your questions of the area or the Big Island in general, to the best of our ability. We practice aloha and are persnickety about room accommodations when we travel so it is our ongoing goal to provide a true quality experience that would meet --or excel-- the demanding guidelines we have when we book a room, cottage or home for ourselves. Please let us know how we can best optimize your stay. For our AirBnB guests, we are typically just a cell phone text away from responding to you or being at your door :) The NeighborhoodThis is a large subdivision ('Fern Forest') with 3 acre parcels of raw land typically filled with large or giant tree ferns, Ohia trees and Guava trees. Most of the parcels have not been developed. A subdivision block is about a mile long. The main road leading into and through the middle of our subdivision is asphalt paved. The off shoot roads are all dirt and gravel, typically with potholes that can be easy to maneuver around --when driving the suggested speed limit of 15mph :) Getting AroundIn our opinion, you really need to arrange to rent a car upon arrival! For those who find this 'impossible', pick up from Hilo or Hilo Airport can be arranged with us at an add'l fee. Public transportation comes in the form of the "Hele On" bus ((website hidden)) and can be boarded near the small neighborhood store mentioned above, about 3 miles away. Walking: Prepare for an hour to two hour walk (depending on your personal speed), with no sidewalks and poor street lighting just to get to the main highway (Highway 11). Our vast rainforest subdivision does not have 'walking lanes' or sidewalks and we feel it is not pedestrian friendly to attempt walking to the store or to the highway. Other Things to NoteA common question posed to us by guests is "You are so close to the Pu'u O'o Vent [about 8 miles from the active vent that has been flowing lava for several decades] -- why don't I feel the effects of the VOG [volcanic out gassing] like I hear about from others who've stayed much farther away, or even others who've stayed on neighboring Hawaiian islands and feel the affects?" We have no factual explanation for this, but having lived here for twelve years our personal explanation/best guess is that for whatever reason unknown to us, the VOG carries around us and this is the norm for (URL HIDDEN) a mystery to us that we don't want to complain about...
