The SpaceThis is a beautiful, private cabin on a secluded stretch of the Baptism River, near the shore of Lake Superior. We built the place ourselves in 1995, using largely local materials and energy-saving building techniques (passive solar, extra insulation, etc.) There is a living room, kitchen, and bathroom downstairs, and a loft bedroom (with a stunning view) upstairs; outside the sliding glass doors is a deck with a view of the woods and the music of the rushing water below. The house has a queen bed upstairs, and you could accommodate an extra person or two on an air mattress. We have central heat and a shower, a full kitchen and high-speed Internet access. We enjoy renting the cabin to responsible people who love the woods as much as we do; this is NOT a commercial venture, but a way to share the beauty of the north woods on a budget, and we keep the price low by relying on you to leave it as you found it. (Think of it more like visiting your own cabin than a hotel or resort.) We generally avoid one-night bookings; please keep in mind that this is not a hotel, simply a cabin with a local person who helps with maintenance. Well behaved, nondestructive pets are welcome. No other homes are visible or audible from the cabin, even though it is only a 10-minute drive from small and historic Finland, MN. Great hiking nearby includes the Lake Superior Hiking Trail; a Boundary Waters Canoe Area entry point is just 20 minutes away in Isabella. The river offers a soothing backdrop as well as the challenge, for the fishermen and -women among you, of brown trout. Swimming is possible at several gorgeous swimming holes nearby. After you book, please make sure to look at the "Directions" and "House Manual" tabs—there's lots of information there that you need. Thanks, and hope you have a fantastic North Woods vacation!

The SpaceThis was originally a German immigrant cabin from 1868 that was relocated to this site many years ago. It's built of hand-hewn ash logs, 20 to 30 feet long and 12 to 14 inches thick. The floors are random width Doug Fir salvaged from a local saw mill. The windows are from an old warehouse in St. Peter, Minnesota. The floor joists are from a salvaged warehouse. Nearly every piece of this cabin has been re-purposed. Modern sky lights were added to bring in natural light, and reduce the dependence on electricity for lighting. Be sure to read the entire detailed description before making a reservation. Guest AccessThere is a living room, kitchen, first floor bedroom with dresser, and a loft bedroom upstairs with dresser and a TV for movies, there is no TV reception. There are two queen futon beds (top quality, foam filled) in the upstairs loft and a full size bed in the first floor bedroom. We do not recommend using the cabin with groups of more than four people. It's perfect for a couple, or a small group of friends. I wouldn't recommend the cabin for a very young family, simply because the interior of the cabin is rustic - it has a very steep staircase, rough surfaces, exposed nails, etc. Children need to be 10 or older to stay overnight at the cabin. We have a radiant floor heating system, and the fireplace provides additional heat with a built in blower fan. Firewood is available at the cabin. There is no internet access at the cabin, but public WiFi is available at the Finland Community Center, just down the road. There is AT&T and Verizon cell phone coverage available at the cabin. Staying here is a wilderness cabin experience, there is NO bathroom - but, there is a clean updated outhouse with heat and electricity. Interaction with GuestsWe love renting the cabin to responsible people who a love the wilderness experience as much as we do. This is NOT a commercial venture, but a way to share the beauty of the north woods in a very unique way. We require a (3) night minimum for all visits including holiday weekends. There will be clean linens on the bed in first floor bedroom when you arrive, we ask that you bring your own bed linens, pillows or sleeping bags for upstairs beds. There are towels and other basic linens available for everyday use. The NeighborhoodPick a quiet spot along the shore, step off the trail, or go beyond that first overlook and take it all in. Find time for the stillness to sit and watch the world you're a part of. It's amazing what you learn when you stop to listen. No other homes are visible or audible from the cabin, even though it is only a 10-minute drive from the small and historic town of Finland, MN. Within a 20-mile radius there are hiking trails, several BWCA entry points, numerous designated trout lakes and streams, including the Baptism, and non-BWCA backcountry campsites, plus the Superior hiking trail. A canoe and paddles are available for guests. There are local swim holes nearby, ping pong and darts in the garage, horse shoes, croquet, archery and badminton if you are so inclined. There is a safe harbor and marina on Lake Superior only a few miles away. If you plan on spending your entire time at the cabin, it's a good idea to bring some supplies with you. The nearest town for groceries, gas, fishing tackle, etc. is Finland. Getting AroundParking available on site. No public transportation. Other Things to NoteIt’s has been brought to my attention on numerous occasions that sometimes people see mice in the cabin. Just so you know, these mice live outside and get into the cabin through the smallest opening looking for food, usually at night. As much as we have tried to rid the cabin of mice, they will always find a way back in because the cabin is made of logs and as the weather changes the logs expand and contract creating little openings. You will occasionally see mice running along the top edge of the logs in plain sight. For some people this is a very disturbing sight! Please keep this in mind when you make a reservation and remember this is a primitive cabin set in a wilderness environment. There is a wood burning fireplace and we provide firewood free of charge, please try to limit your usage to the stack on the front porch. There is more firewood available if necessary, but we ask that you please try to avoid excessive wood burning. No more than 3-4 logs at a time in the outdoor fire pit. We suggest that you supplement outdoor burning with firewood purchased locally. Most people are very prudent about using the provided firewood, however some guests feel entitled to burn as much as possible because its free, which can be expensive for us and we really want to avoid adding any additional fees for firewood.

The SpaceArtist's Loft, with its incomparable view of the Harbor, Sailboats, Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station, is the only private home rental in Downtown Grand Marais on the Harbor. The view is what it is all about! Artist's Loft is right in the heart of downtown Grand Marais on beautiful Harbor Park. It is a great home-base for enjoying the gentle activity of the Village or easily getting away for day trips to the BWCA. Drive up the Gunflint Trail for day adventures and hikes, but stay at the Artist Loft to experience all that downtown has to offer...just footsteps out the front door. Artist's Loft has two bedrooms and one bathroom with a claw foot tub and a view of the Harbor. The Artist Loft is an upper unit with beautiful views & there is also a lower unit (The Storefront) where guests also stay. Both units have private, separate & secure entrances. Ask about renting both units for larger groups. Both units joined together can sleep up to 10!! Even though Artist's Loft is right downtown on the harbor front, it is graced with a gorgeous secluded quiet off street wildflower garden with decks and lounging chairs and tables to relax in the sun or have a intimate outside breakfast lunch or dinner. Cook in with our fully equipped kitchen or get it to go, semi-catered from a choice of several fabulous restaurants. Your own private campfires in the backyard at night. You can even book & rent the backyard for private events, wedding receptions, or any other intimate get-togethers. In the evening, step right next door to the Gunflint Tavern and enjoy a craft beer at their newly opened brewpub or Mojito in the 'Ravens Nest' lake-view deck and then listen to world class music in the early evening. The music at 'The Tavern' ranges from gentle Gypsy Jazz to Folk and Folk Rock for the occasional night of dancing. Also, the all-new Voyageur Brewing's taproom just opened and is a short 2 block walk! Wake with the gulls in the morning sun and enjoy the quiet solitude of downtown as it gently comes to life. Walk to The Pie Place, The Crooked Spoon Restaurant, Angry Trout Cafe, Hughies Taco's, The Dockside Fish Market, the Gunflint Tavern, Voyageur Brewing, breakfast at the Blue Water Cafe and Donuts and World's Best Donuts!! All within 1-2 blocks! You have it all at Artists Loft. Oh, and don't forget that Legendary Sven and Ole's Pizza is right up the street. The thing to remember about Artist's Loft is that every day is a beautiful magical day whether it is sunny and warm or stormy and wild; all year round nature's magic unfolds right in front of you over the greatest of lakes, Lake Superior. A little History about Artist's Loft: It was built in the early 1900s by Chet Boisvert. Chet was the village barber and the shop was equipped with showers for the lumberjacks to come in from the woods for a hot shower. He was also an avid Democrat and held party meetings at the Loft on Main Street. In the guest book it was found that his grandchildren had stayed here when our friend Stephen, the previous owner, first opened Artists Loft. They left an entry in the guestbook telling of heartwarming memories such as... - ' The last time I slept in this bedroom was 43 years ago. I can still remember hearing my people cheering at 6 am when they announced the Victory of Harry Truman over Dewey in 1948!' - 'I remember watching, from the front windows, pulp boats loading logs from the thousands of logs floating in the harbor' You can still feel those memories at Artist's Loft as you gaze out the windows and still see fishing boats and sailboats bobbing in the breezes. Come share the Magic! Guest AccessThere is a coded lockbox with very easy instructions on how to access. Interaction with GuestsEmail or cell phone. (EMAIL HIDDEN)

We are close to town and yet well off the road and tucked into the forest on all sides. The cabin itself is a gem and the glass wall facing south makes for a beautiful bright view. Large grassy (mowed) area in front with the firepit is nice to lounge on right up to the Little Devil Track river. The fishing (and swimming) here is for kids, but there are unlimited places a few miles away for various types of adult fishing. Beaver, Great Blue Heron, Kingfisher, mink and moose move up and down the river at dusk. We have a complete circle turnaround for parking. The woodstove is modern and efficient with ample split birch firewood, and small European wall heat panels heat the rooms. The loft has an inflatable (automatic) full mattress although many people, especially the kids prefer sleeping bags. All linens are provided though. You can see the water from our Artesian well flowing just outside the window, ice cold and pure. Cancellation policy: Full refund within 30 days of your first rental day. This is a wilderness cabin...the beaver, the eagles above, the silence. Our one neighbor is rarely heard from for seen at all. The small river is accessible right out your front door, and kids like to splash, catch and net things! But so many things to do beckon beyond the cabin property it's almost overwhelming. The Lake Superior Hiking Trail (which runs from Duluth to Canada) is very nearby. Devils Track Lake, a rather large lake has good fishing and swimming is down the road a couple of miles. The galleries, food and music in "town" are extraordinary. Grand Marais really has become quite a hub for artists of all types. The North House Folk School is a one of a kind craftshop with adult classes and the Gunflint Tavern features local and national talent in a funky intimate atmosphere. Almost half of the people who stay at our cabin are repeat visitors. When you read our guestbook you can see the fun (and quiet relaxation) unfold for so many, rain or shine.
