The SpaceMercedes House originally called "Tarra" was built in 1895 but as a single story home for a local merchant, in later years the Catholic Church/Marist Brother purchased the residence and added an additional story to accommodate boys boarding and schooling (Circa 1921). Mercedes later change to all girls under the guidance of the Sister Of Mercy and continued the boarding school till 1975. Mercedes is now a privately owned home (Circa 1984) and has recently been opened to accommodate Home Stays, Bed & Breakfasts and Large Group Accommodation. Mercedes House has many of the original features of homes built in the last two centuries but has been updated quite extensively to accommodate later styles of living. You can still find throughout the house period installations like high press metal ceilings, lead light windows, porcelain tiled foyer, original fireplaces, tongue and groove flooring, large open spaced verandas, large semi-formal gardens and the odd quiet nock to just sit and relax. The Semi-self contained apartment, two person maximum, was a later addition to the main house it is an open planned multifunctional designed living space, with a fully equipped kitchen for self catering, large walk in wardrobe, large shower en suite and Queen sized bed with quality bed and bathroom linen. Michael and Denise, the live in owners, are more than happy to give booking guests a guided tour of Mercedes House upon request. The SpaceOur studio is as large as a small house (76 sq m) -- an open-plan hideaway for people who need some peace and time to slow down and chill out for a few days. Our younger guests call it a really ‘funky’ space. It’s great for two as a romantic weekender. It’s also nice for parents who want to keep an eye on a toddler. Alternatively, there’s plenty of room for up to 4 good mates and travellers. The SpaceThe Retreat occupies one pavilion of a newly built award winning contemporary eco - farmhouse on our beautiful 50 acre organic farm on the Lachlan river, just a four minute drive from the Forbes CBD and 1.7 Km off the Newell Highway connecting Melbourne to Brisbane. Your house can accommodate up to four people in two bedrooms, both ensuite. Beds may be set up as Kings or King singles - your choice just let us know! Two rollaways are also available for children taking possible occupancy to 6. There is a $25 fee per rollaway. Please let us know if these are required The Retreat is completely self contained with its own private entry and undercover parking. Your comfort is assured with air conditioning and heating throughout. A fully equipped kitchen allows you to self- cater and is generously stocked with healthy breakfast provisions including our own organic free range eggs; cereals including Girragirra's house made muesli; sourdough bread; yoghurt; milk; house made jams and marmalade; seasonal fruit and filtered rain water on tap. Blinds and double glazing ensure complete visual and audio privacy for both parties. The NeighborhoodForbes has to be the prettiest little town in the Central West. Built on the flood plain of the Lachlan River, Forbes is picturesque year round and an absolute oasis in our hot western summers. It’s a town steeped in the history of the 1800’s gold rush, wild and woolly bush rangers (looking remarkably like the modern day hipster) and of course farming of every description. Add to this a gorgeous little boutique shopping centre, a championship Golf course and a beautifully kept Olympic swimming pool and everybody’s happy. There's so much to see and do in and around this fabulous little town of ours! The town is rich with heritage buildings and the Gum Swamp Bird Hide (just a three K round trip walk from the Retreat) is a must for birdwatchers. Walk the heritage trail and check out our magnificent old buildings including the Town Hall above. Forbes Historic Museum is a gem, car buffs will just love McFeeter’s Motor Museum and if you’re into bushrangers a visit to Ben Hall and Kate Kelly at the Forbes cemetery is an optional extra. A walking track around our glorious Lake Forbes entices you to go for a leisurely stroll or a brisk 5K walk, run or ride – whatever takes your fancy. There are plenty of grassy banks to unroll the picnic rug and while away a few hours or throw a line in and catch your dinner. Either way, you’ll soak up the essence of this lovely country town and I’m sure more than one local will offer you a friendly “g’day”. Wander into town and enjoy our beautifully laid out boutique shopping centre with its great coffee, country pubs and clubs and thriving arts community. Visit the Platypus Gallery, the Sculpture Art Park and Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre for your Arts hit and don’t forget the huge Wool Mural on the wall out at the Homemakers Centre on the Parkes Rd, it’s worth the short drive! For the nature lovers among you, the River is a huge draw card for fishing, canoeing or just sitting back and watching the antics of the many birds and the odd human that call it home. Gum Swamp Bird Hide is birdwatcher heaven – just four km out of town and, ahem, only a 3km return stroll from Girragirra. It’s possible to observe over 60 species of birds in just a few hours with a number listed as threatened or endangered. Farming is the back bone of our community so you’ll see plenty of farmers in utes with keen dogs on the back and of course paddocks full of sheep, cattle and a multitude of crops plus machinery of all shapes and sizes. They’re out there doing their thing, growing your food and fibre for you. Give them a wave as you drive past eh? Forbes serves as an ideal base for exploring the Central West or as a stop-over on the Newell Highway linking Melbourne and Brisbane. It is just 1 1/2 hours to Dubbo and Orange and 3 hours to the nation's capital, Canberra. Getting AroundThere is a train service to Forbes and daily flights from Sydney to the nearby Parkes airport. Other Things to NoteThe Retreat is part of a working organic farm. The billabong in front of the Retreat is unfenced. There is a bird sanctuary an easy 3K round trip walk from the Retreat. The SpaceTake a break, stay a while.... and experience our 320,000 acre backyard. Our two bedroom Overseer's Cottage is situated by the beautiful Darling River in Outback NSW Australia - enjoy canoeing, fishing, yabbying, swimming, bushwalks, plentiful Australian wildlife, delicious home cooked country style meals and self guided mud map tours on the station. Observe seasonal station activities such as sheep shearing, goat mustering, lambing and all the usual run of the mill activities that make life on a vast station so interesting to visitors. Guest AccessWe offer use of our canoes,( with life jackets and paddles), yabby nets and some bait to get you started, hand fishing lines, our beautiful pool, walking trails and detailed trip notes for self guided touring on the station. Interaction with GuestsStation life is very busy for us - in fact we don't work a 9 to 5 job but rather a 5 to 9 job.... 7 days a week. My husband says Sunday is the first day of the working week!! So yes, we're busy, but we do love a chat. Liz spends her time working within the tourism business while Gary runs the stock side of things. As such, Liz is always on hand to offer advice, have a chat (often around a campfire at night) and answer your queries, though of course she's also very tied up actually looking after the business, the cleans, the meals etc etc single handedly! The NeighborhoodI absolutely love the wide open spaces, the endless skies, the amazing stars (there is no light pollution out this way so the stars are absolutely awesome!), the solitude, kangaroos and emus grazing near the homestead, birds calling at daylight ..... I could go on forever but hopefully you get the idea. We're 125 km from our nearest large town with no nearby neighbours.... total serenity in a wonderful outback landscape. Getting AroundBourke or Cobar are our closest towns offering public transport, and hire cars are available from both locations ... we're 125 m from Bourke and 160km from Cobar on good, unsealed roads. You do need to keep a bit of an eye on the weather though. Rain makes the roads slippery and often impassable, so it's best to always check road conditions with me before heading out, if the weather looks iffy.

This heritage listed building was once Hillston's local bank and the large built in safe still remains. This accommodation is designed to be a home away from home and so provides facilities for at home cooking and dining. The Furnishings are of high quality for a comfortable stay and a taste of outback luxury. Guest AccessThe Old Bank is part of a larger building where the owners also make their home. The accommodation is a combination of the old bank itself, the old manager's office and minor extensions. There is also a small rose garden and veranda that is yours for the duration of your stay. Behind this is the old manager's residence which is where Dolph and Cathy Meyer (owners) live. This area and the back yard is private property and is not free to the access of guests. The NeighborhoodHillston is a small town located on the edge of outback Australia and is a humble community that sits on the Lachlan River. It has a few shops and restaurant options including 2 pubs that often have live bands on the weekend. There is also a variety of recreational activities that are available in Hillston including walks, fishing and a lake in the Summer. It is a great place for a quiet getaway. Getting AroundHillston is not a large place so does not have a need for public transport within the town. It is a great place to get out and walk around or just take a drive. Other Things to NoteThe price includes continental breakfast supplies for the first day. eg: cereal, fruit, yoghurt and bread. Tea and coffee is supplied. Please note this unit is not serviced daily.
