The SpaceRustic cabin, built in 1901, now being lovingly nuzzled back to beauty. Spacious and cozy, woodsy and bright, with two big porches overlooking the Russian River Valley. A five-minute walk from the river, a five-minute drive from a bunch of wineries, and twenty-five minutes from the unbelievable Sonoma coast. Guest AccessNo internet. No TV. No phone. Yes hummingbirds and the occasional deer. Amenities include plenty of good books, a not-so-good record player, a harmonica, a grill on the deck, and a wood-burning stove with plenty of firewood. Other Things to Note-The sleeping spots are: a full-size bed in the master bedroom; a full-size futon mattress in the loft at the top of a ladder; a twin mattress that can be on the floor of the study; and plenty of deck space for sleeping under the stars. -Disclaimer: The place is a hundred years old and the renovation is still a work-in-progress, so there are still some quirks and rough edges: the kitchen table wobbles, the refrigerator is a mini-fridge, the half-bathroom door doesn't latch, etc. If things like that sound like "rustic charm," this house is for you; if they sound like offensive hazards, probably not.

The SpaceDown a private driveway, sitting on a hill, overlooking vineyard views and mountain vistas is a re-modeled 1920's guesthouse. We call it Casa Compostella, for 'field of stars'. Welcome to paradise in wine country! The 2 Bd./one bath/ farmhouse has everything you need to make your wine country vacation enjoyable. Luxury sheets and towels, a gas fireplace, cozy rooms professionally designed in a sunny, comfortable style. The kitchen is set-up to cook, or sit and look out on the 5 star view of vines and mountains. The location has more sun than anywhere in West Sonoma County! Cool mornings, warm afternoons and then cool evenings make this a perfect climate for living inside or out. A 60' solar heated lap pool is on the property, as well as a therapeutic hot tub with an outdoor shower. Adjacent to the guesthouse is a path leading to an organic garden, where raspberries can be plucked for your morning breakfast. It is all here, and so much more. Take a slow drive a short distance to some of the greatest pinot and chardonnay tasting rooms. We are minutes to Healdsburg or Sebastopol, where you can find ambitious chefs creating sumptuous meals using local ingredients. Exercise and activities abound. You can bike on the Joe Rodata trail, just beyond the house, or take a ride over Westside Rd. Hiking is just 15 minutes away beneath beautiful redwood groves. There are two 9 hole golf courses plus two 18 hole courses a short distance away. The pacific coastline is a beautiful drive over the hill from Graton through Occidental, both great towns worth exploring. You will never run out of things to do. Wineries, art galleries, shopping and enjoying life is what Sonoma is all about! If you are looking for a special treat, you can revive yourself with a day trip to the famous mud baths in Calistoga. If you desire something closer there are several day spas in the area that will pamper you like a princess! And - privacy! The house is away on its' own. We’ve built a screened-in sleeping porch off in the apple trees that is a perfect spot to read a book or have a massage from our favorite practitioner. Next to the porch is your own patio with barbecue and outdoor eating area. Here at Knowlton Farms you are away from town, but close enough to everything. Guest AccessGuesthouse, pool, hot tub, napping porch, outdoor dining eating areas. The SpaceEnjoy a trip back in time "riding the rails" in our 1941 Rio Railroad caboose, [Sonoma County Tax cert #1364N], while relaxing in the heart of the Russian River wine country. Set among gardens and fruit tree orchards, our remodeled train car offers a comfy vacation getaway for 2 with a kitchenette, queen bed, and access to a shared pool. Guest AccessThe spaces sits next to two private decks - one with a grill and the other on the shared pool; perfect for a relaxing afternoon after a day of wine tasting or cycling around our lovely countryside. Guests are welcome to wander our lovely fruit and vegetable gardens. We offer access to a laundry room for longer stays. One designated parking space. Interaction with GuestsOther than the shared pool which we occasionally use, the property is large enough that you can maintain a completely private stay. Or if you prefer, we are onsite in the main house to happily answer any questions you may have about the area's amenities or the property. The NeighborhoodThe area provides peace and quiet in a beautiful country setting. The wonderful town of Forestville offers great restaurants from $ - $$$$, a French style bakery, coffee shops, and is in the heart of Western Sonoma County's wine country. Less than a mile from the Russian River and minutes to Korbel, Mary Edwards, Rodney Strong, DeLoach wineries and close to Dry Creek , Alexander Valley, Kenwood, and Sonoma areas. This is a popular bicycling destination and is close to Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast. Getting AroundA rental car is advised. There is one dedicated parking space on the property. The towns of Graton, Sebastopol, Guerneville, Santa Rosa, and Healdsburg are all a short drive or bike ride away.

The SpaceI believe it would be almost impossible to find a house with a comparable setting. You feel like you have a long stretch of the Russian River all to yourselves when you stay here! Very Private, as it is at the end of a short private road. River access right from the house. You can literally throw a rock into the water from the deck. Note: Please do NOT make a Reservation Request until AFTER you and I have communicated a bit. 2-stories, 1,700 square feet, redwood trees on either side AND growing up through the deck next to the hot tub (it is SO COOL!) with an amazing view of the Russian River. 2 miles from the Korbel Champagne Cellars and wineries are everywhere. 5 miles East of Guerneville with its fun shops & restaurants. 10 miles West of Santa Rosa, This is charming, rustic, cabin-style house is decorated with comfort and relaxation in mind and a few antiques thrown in for good measure. It’s spacious (2 Living Rooms) comfortable and very cozy. 4 Bedrooms. One on the main floor of the house, off the kitchen, with a twin bed and curtains instead of doors. It has a door directly to the downstairs bathroom. Perfect for a person who can't do stairs easily. The The 3 larger bedrooms (one is HUGE and has a fireplace - you'll have to draw straws :) are upstairs. 2 Full Bathrooms plus a Shower on the Huge Deck. Six-Person Hot Tub Good Wifi Charcoal AND Gas Barbecues to Choose From Very Well-Appointed Kitchen DVD player / Stereo Receiver / TV for watching movies. There is a drawer full of movies to choose from. No Cable-on purpose :) Fireplace in Master Bedroom and wood stove in downstairs Living Room. I supply the firewood. I send guests a "House Tips" sheet with suggested things to do and places to eat. $125 cleaning fee. Sleeps 8, and I have an 8-person limit. If your party is a bit larger than that I would consider it for $25 more per night per person, but no more than 10 adults may stay at the house. Too much wear-and-tear and too much water use for the septic system to handle. Small children and babies excepted. Note: During the SUPER busy months (July & August), I have a 5-night minimum stay policy. Or we can work out a higher nightly rate and you can stay fewer nights. 2-night stays are fine between Sunday and Thursday. In September things calm down quite a bit and I can start taking weekend-only bookings again. Guest AccessThe River! A staircase and path right next to the carport take you on a one-minute walk to the river's edge. Country roads off the beaten path to hike or ride bikes around on. Washer & dryer are available to guests staying 5 nights or longer. Just don't go onto the down-river neighbor's property or try to access the river that way, which shouldn't be difficult because there's a fence. Interaction with GuestsGuests will have the whole area to themselves. I live 75 miles from the property but my caretaker lives within easy walking distance, so if there are any questions or issues, he's there to help. His phone number and the housekeeper's number are provided in case anyone has questions and you can't reach me. The housekeeper will leave the door unlocked for you and house keys will be hanging on a hook on the refrigerator. The NeighborhoodI LOVE the fact that it's SO peaceful! I advise my guests to bring binoculars to watch the various large birds (Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Ospreys, Hawks) and Deer that are commonly seen from the deck. Sometimes a River Otter or seal is seen swimming by. And great BIG fish of some kind - Steehlead? Also, since the house is at the end of a private road, there are no cars driving by my house and the public is not allowed on our road. One thing to note: You will pass a house that belongs to my caretaker. It's a "work in progress" as far as clearing out his accumulations, but he's a very nice person and very helpful to my guests when they need local info or a raft inflated :) I suggest that my guests consider him "local color". Getting AroundThere is a Sonoma County bus stop about 3/4 of a mile form the house. It runs East to Santa Rosa and West possibly to the coast. But it makes many stops and I don't recommend it as a regular means of transportation. There is room for 3 cars at the property. More cars will cause you to block each other in. Carpool! Other Things to NoteThe path to the River starts at the bottom of the stairs that take you to the lower part of the property. They are right next to the carport. Since there isn't a beach right there, you might want to bring up some folding chairs so you can sit in the shallow water and not have to stand up all the time. Also, the first time you come to the house, do your best to arrive before dark, or see to it that at least one member of your party does so they can talk you in if you do arrive after dark. There aren't any streetlights out there and the house is difficult to find at night. Plus you'll miss the drop-dead scenery on the way in, which is quite dramatic. It really is an exciting drive in. It's a narrow road though, so go slowly.

The SpaceThis gorgeous property is located right on the Russian River and is very close to legendary wineries, redwoods and Sonoma coast beaches. The property has a REAL BEACH (sand and pebbles) which is quite rare for the Russian River. Also very rare: The property is large, private, very sunny (and mostly bug-free); The house has real character, warmth, simplicity and style. It is small and cozy (but has a gourmet kitchen and a huge tile shower). The neighborhood and locals are funky/colorful/eccentric, which is not rare at all around here. Visitors all say the same thing- this place is "magical" *****Please note that summer bookings (June 1st-September 30th) will be 1 week long (check-in/check out on Fridays). Exceptions will be made on a case to case basis- Feel free to ask.***** The house is beautiful, light, airy, modern, rustic, simple, minimal and serene. The decks are perfect for sunning, outdoor dining and drinking. The beach is perfect for swimming, playing, boating (kayaks and canoe provided) and just soaking in the sun, river and scenery (views up and down the river valley including the Hacienda Bridge). The yard is lush and private and dotted with fruit trees, a mini vineyard, hammocks and a fire pit. This is a perfect romantic getaway or a place to indulge yourself while also thrilling your kids and dog (bring your own-neither provided). Please note that the house is loft style (no door on the bedroom) so your people must like (or at least tolerate) each other. Inside the house, you'll find redwood ceilings, fir floors, skylights and dozens of wood windows (all with gorgeous views- some of the river). The house is appointed with striking mid century furniture, a perfect queen bed and a fully equipped modern kitchen (including gas cooktop and convection oven). The house is also equipped with a wood burning stove, audiophile stereo (to connect with your laptop, iPhone or iPad), 50Mbs WiFi, TV/DVD, sumptuous linens and gas heat. The house has almost every single detail covered- you will want for almost nothing. This is a fully remodeled mid-century cottage, designed by me, for me- but now for you to enjoy as well. The house opens to 2 decks (furnished with gas grill, dining tables and lounge chairs) overlooking the yard, the river and beyond. Moving outside, the house is framed by fruit trees (plum, apple, fig, pear, orange, etc), olive trees, grape vines and bay laurels. Under the orange tree, with a view of the river, is a large hot tub, which is adjacent to a fire pit and a tomato/herb garden (help yourself). Moving towards the river, the more orderly yard gives way to fertile riparian habitat- gently rolling grassy meadow with native willow/elder/maple/cottonwood trees cradling a shaded hammock. Descend a little further and the sandy riverbank draped with willows and wild grapevines lead you to the luscious beach made of only sand, pebbles and sun carved by the flowing waters of the glorious Russian River (This thing just writes itself, huh?). The beach frontage is 125 feet long and is laced with a dozen types of willows. The river is shallow and calm in the summer (perfect for boating or tubing- canoe, kayaks and innertubes provided), but the mighty Russian grows immensely (depth and width) and dramatically thunders to life in the winter. It is amazing to see, hear and feel. The Russian River Watershed is home to ducks, great blue herons, osprey, hawks, foxes, river otters, deer, mountain lions and and wild turkeys as well as salmon, steelhead, bass, sturgeon, hippies and rednecks. The property is very sunny (no redwoods), yet has shade trees (with hammocks) for comfort in the summer. The air is scented with bay leaves, lemon balm, fennel, mugwort, redwood and orange blossoms. Summer is hot and lush, but the water in the river is the perfect temperature for cooling. On winter mornings the sun rises through river fog wisping through the hills and between the redwoods, which typically burns off by 9am leaving sun and clear skies. The nights are cool all year round, which is why the local wine is so good (and so necessary!). The night skies are dark and soaked with stars- unless there is a full moon, which bathes the river in light and makes you wonder why the hell you would ever want to be anywhere else (note - waxing lunar surcharges are applicable). Amenities: ~ THE BEACH! ~ THE RIVER! ~ 1.5 acre property ~ Hot tub ~ Wood burning stove ~ Gourmet kitchen ~ Gas cooktop ~ Gas grill ~ Fire Pit ~ Canoe and 2 Kayaks ~ Hammocks ~ Dozens of windows and skylights ~ Gas Heat ~ Washer/Dryer ~ Fruit trees ~ Tomato & herb garden/ Vineyard/Asparagus patch ~ Dog friendly ~ 2 decks with shaded dining Table ~ Very sunny ~ River and Bridge views ~ 50 Mbs WiFi ~ Orthopedic Queen bed and small very comfy Sofa bed ~ Extra Queen airbed ~ Luxurious linens ~ TV/DVD ~ Audiophile Stereo with Apple Airplay Guest AccessThe house, the yard, the spa, the beach, the boats, the neighborhood, the redwoods, the coast... Interaction with GuestsWhen my house is rented, I am exiled to San Francisco or Graton- so I am not on the property. You will have the place to yourself (but unfortunately not the pleasure of my company). However, I am easily reachable by email, text or phone. Disclaimer- Please note that every once in a while, I will come take one of the boats out for a spin. The boats are in the far back yard, in the brush and near the beach, so you won't see or hear me. I can access them from the beach without ever going through the property or anywhere near the house. The NeighborhoodA block away (downstream) is Sunset Beach State Park with several beaches and trails. Hacienda beach is 200 feet upstream. A block away in yet another direction (we have 4 of them) is Westside Road (a Wine Country landmark), which follows the river and meanders through miles and miles of vineyards and dozens of some of the best wineries in the world (ending up in wonderful Healdsburg). Away from the river are mysterious majestic redwood covered hills that eventually lead to the dramatic rocky Sonoma coast with its beautiful and dramatic rocky cliffs and beaches. The neighborhood has unusual diversity: old hippies, LGBT couples, rednecks, new agers, working class families, old school Italian family summer dwellers, tweakers, scavengers and expat urbanites. Don't be scared off by any of the above- we all seem to get along quite well (except the crazy attorney with the foul mouth across the street). The area has great restaurants, farms, wineries and artisan food makers of all sorts. The scenery in Sonoma county is unprecedented- redwoods, rivers, lakes, lagunas and especially the coast. See the House Manual for specific recommendations for places to visit, shop, eat and drink. Also check out (website hidden) pages of 101 Things To Do in Sonoma County and Russian River Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. Getting AroundThe property is only 10 minutes off the Highway 101 River Road exit- which is only an hour drive from the Golden Gate Bridge (less if you are less than law abiding). Nearby are Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Graton, Guerneville, Occidental and Jenner. There is also a bus that stops 2 blocks away from the house that goes directly to Downtown Santa Rosa. Other Things to NoteNOTE- A 10% Sonoma County Tourist tax is not included and will be added to the rental rate at the time of booking. Currently airbnb has no easy way to facilitate this- so after your reservation is confirmed, You will receive a "request for alteration" of the reservation, which adds on an extra 10%. NOTE- The house is small and therefore ideal for a couple with or without a child. It comfortably accommodates 3 people (2 in the bedroom (queen bed) and 1 on the very comfortable sofa bed). There is also an airbed that can accommodate another person or 2, but there is very limited floor space for it unless you locate it alfresco on the deck (great in summer). The house is small, so 4 humans sharing it is very cozy (too cozy for some). Please note that the bedroom doesn't have a door. however, there is a hallway which physically and visually separates it from the living area. NOTE- Summer Bookings (June-September) will be 1 week long (check-in/check out on Fridays). Exceptions will be made on a case to case basis. NOTE- Outside of Summer, bookings can start or end on any day of the week except for Saturday. Well behaved children and pets are welcome as long as they clean up after themselves and don't chew or pee/poo on the furniture or on any of the neighbors. There is an additional $50 per stay cleaning fee for pets. The house is pet friendly- which means that dogs (and an occasional cat) come into the house. The house is thoroughly cleaned after each guest, but if you are allergic, you probably should not rent this house. Please note that in the Winter the beach is typically completely under water due to the swollen size of the river. In the Spring the beach is smaller than in Summer. Fall when the beach is at its biggest- by far (and therefore the river is at its shallowest).
