The SpaceNote: The nightly price on the top right is mid week, off peak, with a small group, without linen. AirBnB adjusts with these variables. Otways Loft was specifically bought, renovated and set up for holiday accommodation, the long awaited sister property to Liptrap Loft (National winner of Peoples Choice 2014 + Romance 2013 + state winner of Outdoor Lovers 2012). It is not 5 star luxury, but we can say with confidence that it is unique. The builder lived in a shed using the train carriage as a workshop whist building the house. It is an eclectic construction built on a framework of tree poles in a triangular pattern. The interior is a mixture of train parts, local timber and salvaged materials. Every shingle over the house and train was hand cut from the forest. It was a labour of love. Forrest is set in the hinterland behind the Great Ocean Road. It is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain-forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Spoil yourself and make it a long weekend. Take the Great Ocean Road home on Monday when there is no one around. We scoured Victoria to find a property to match Liptrap Loft in unique character & charm. We think we have found it. There is still work to do, to get it to where we want it, but if you are not precious ;0) we think guests will enjoy the house and love Forrest. Special features include : - free standing claw foot bath in master bedroom ( with a lovely view over the green yard and landscape) - newly renovated bathroom - Wood fired heater with wood supply included - air con/split system in lounge room and master bed room - dishwasher - washing machine and dryer - WiFi - Hammock - Italian style stove-top coffee maker and French press (plunger) - Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap - Lush garden, fenced but not dog proof. -2 adult mountain bikes available for use. Ix toddler seat. I tag-along. 2 kids bikes (no training wheels). Helmets. - Pets and children welcome. There is a dog run around the balcony with a doggy bed and bowls. It is fenced and gated, but not completely dog proof. BEDDING 3 bedroom (with a 4th loft/space but no door) - upstairs master bedroom with claw foot bath . Two singles which are pushed together as a King -upstairs reading room with balcony has two singles which can also go together to make a King. -Down stairs is a third bedroom with a queen bed. -There is also a loft with a loft ladder and double futon. This is available as another bedroom for someone nimble. It is not suitable for elderly, but kids love it. Pricing includes linen. Total - 6 single beds (two of which convert to King beds), 1 queen bed and one double futon. The train carriage next door is also available for holiday rental. See the AirBnb listing: Steam Carriage In The Otways https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7294998 The two properties can be rented together for larger groups. Together the properties can sleep up to 14 guests ( but ideal for a total of 10-12). Guest AccessGuests have access to the house and garden. Entry is vial keys are in a key-safe. Interaction with GuestsThe owners are based an hour's drive from Forrest, so wont be seen during guests stay, but will be available via phone or email before during and after the stay to answer any questions. The NeighborhoodForrest was a logging town until a decade ago. Since then it has been reinvigorated as the center for mountain biking in the state. World class mountain bike trails surround the town like ski runs at a snow resort. The town is surrounded by gorgeous lush rain-forest, with massive gum trees, teeming with wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, wombats, wallaby's and echidnas. Scores of birds pass through the garden all day. Forrest is full of gorgeous birds. Getting AroundTrains run from Melbourne and Geelong to Colac. A bus runs from Colac to Forrest then on to the Great Ocean Road. The whole town is in walking distance including the Brewery, Bike Shop, Guest House and Pub. The Outdoor Bathroom / Shower / Toilet: remains outdoors, as traditional as they come. However it is undercover from the back door & there are no cobwebs or spiders in our old-style outdoor loo. The kitchen & lounge area are compact, more so, if the house is full ( 6 people ), but what it lacks in spaciousness, it makes up in character / charm & cosiness. Our yard has lots of space and seclusion. A high hedge shields the house from the road. Across the road is a farmer's paddock & hay shed, while the cottage backs onto a neighbour's paddock. The orientation of the house allows it to stay cool in Summer ( we haven't experienced an uncomfortable Summer without air-conditioning ) & for the duration of Winter, we are spoilt with heating options & an endless supply of firewood. Our cottage & garden is great for children of all ages. One of my favourite reviews has been from a mum of older children. She wrote how her son's re-discovered the joys of jumping on a trampoline, and after a few expensive adventure-based activities in the Otway's, she asked them when heading home, what their favourite part of the holiday was, it was The Cottage. Guest AccessThe house & property ( almost one acre ) is ALL yours. For any amount of guests: up to 6. Interaction with GuestsI arrive the morning of check-in: make fresh beds, light the lounge room fire ( if cold ) leave a cake & I disappear, leaving you to enjoy your cake / fire etc. You will find a welcome note, with any instructions / suggestions & my contact phone number, should you need any assistance. We have a list of Important Contacts on the wall in the kitchen ( doctor, pharmacy, local emergency dept etc ). I also leave event details, Cycling Event Info ( for guests participating ), other festival / local attraction info. The Kids Eco Adventure Challenge at the Otway Fly is every day of the school holidays. The Zip Line is 25m above the ground & quite exhilarating. Book Online & Save. Closer to Barwon Downs are exceptionally unique markets, celebrating local Otway produce. Birregurra Market ( every 2nd Sun of month from Dec-April ). The Deans Marsh Market's (2) are held late in the year. During Easter, a drive to Allenvale for Apple Picking is very worthwhile. Varieties include Jonathan's and Cox's Orange Pippin, priced from $3-$4 kg: weigh your bounty in the apple shed: there's an old fashioned honesty box. The township of Lorne is just minutes from the orchard. The NeighborhoodThe neighbourhood is quiet. Farmers & Growers quietly produce & grow. Our next door neighbour is a horticulturist / his property is a fabulous berry farm. Cow's graze in the paddock opposite us. For weekenders like us, we come to escape the everyday. My favourite time to visit Barwon Downs, is December, filling our buckets with Wally's berries, and in Winter ( l love the smell burning wood ). Getting AroundA car is the best way to get around, however fuel trips must be factored in: Colac is the closest fuel stop: a 20 minute drive away. The Otway Treetop Walk / Zip Line is under one hour in drive time. A Gorgeous Drive: off the beaten track. Grab our bike's & pedal around Barwon Downs: it's a neighbourhood of old weatherboard cottages, valley view's & the odd kangaroo. Other Things to NoteLinen, Towels & Botanical Soaps are provided. There is an endless amount of firewood for your use. There is a washing machine & washing powder. Our pantry has the basics i.e. olive oil, spices, sugar, oats, coffee, tea, Vegemite etc. We have recently added a Honesty Bar, which includes beer, wine & a few extra's ( this idea came from the purchase of a very ordinary, pricey bottle of wine at the local pub ).

The SpaceThe carriage was used as a workshop, when the original owner was building the house next door. When we started renovating, the carriage did not have enough intact to restore it, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced. It has taken nine months to renovate the train from a pretty ragged start. Almost every surface had to have something done to it, and we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything over 100 years will have its challenges, but this was exceptional. It was opened for guests in July 2015. It is still a work in progress, there is a lot more to do before it reaches our vision, but we have been astounded by it's popularity. Special features include : - Can sleep 6 but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below. - 3 Bedrooms. Two in a single compartment with a double compartment master bed room. Two queen beds, two thin singles. - Linen, towels, hand towels and tea towels are provided. The beds will be made up when you arrive. - Bathroom with shower - Open plan kitchen/living room - Wood fire box heater with wood supply included - Nobo heaters - Industrial Fan - Full small kitchen with stove, oven, sink, fridge and cupboards - No washing machine and dryer - WiFi - Italian Stove top coffee maker and French Press (plunger) - Italian style stove-top coffee maker - Basic provisions like olive oil, spices, tea, coffee, Vegemite and Glad Wrap -2 adult mountain bikes suitable for trail riding. Helmets. - Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but a clever dog could easily escape. NO TV. There is a stereo, books and board games. Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were king! In the late 1800's trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to share it with guests. Guest AccessSLEEPING It can sleep six people, but two to four would be more comfortable. The two small bed rooms were train seating compartments, only 2.1m square, so they are only just longer than a bed. The rooms are close together, the bath room is between the kids and second bedroom and there is not a lot of audio insulation. You can hear what is happening in the next compartment. It is ideal for: •A couple, with the whole train for themselves it is pretty spacious. •A couple and two kids. It should work well for: •A couple, and up to four kids. Two kids would need to sleep in one queen bed. A great place for kids to take a friend. •Two couples, as long as they were good friends. It would be close living. It may work for: •Four adults, one in each bed. The single beds are train beds, like caravan beds (750mm wide). •Six adults would be possible, but only if you are planning to be out most of the day and out for dinner. If it a just place to sleep, it could work. Interaction with GuestsWe live an hour from Forrest, but we are available by phone if needed anytime. The NeighborhoodForrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is deafening. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Otways Loft is curious mix of tree-house, vintage train, raw and recycled materials, set in a rambling adventure garden. The long awaited sister property to Liptrap Loft (Stayz National winner of Peoples Choice 2014 + Stayz National winner Romance 2013 + Stayz Victorian State winner of Outdoor Lovers 2012). We scoured Victoria to find a property to match Liptrap Loft in unique character & charm. The property in Forrest was quite run-down, but we renovated the house and Otways Loft has been set up solely as holiday accommodation. It is not 5 star luxury, but we can say with confidence that it is UNIQUE. The builder lived in a shed on-site, and craned in a train carriage to use as a workshop, whist building the house. It is an eclectic construction built on a framework of tree poles in a triangular pattern. The interior is a mixture of parts from the train carriage, locally milled timber and salvaged materials from a local church, and other sources. The SpaceA majestic 44 hectare property like no other. This cheek rustic lake house is breathtaking. This majestic landscape has everything one would want from a Lakehouse. You drive down a beautiful lush driveway and you come across the shear beauty of a five-hectare lake. The Lakehouse has more of the look of a shearers quarters than a manor house. The exterior is made almost entirely of recycled materials, including timber salvaged from wharves along the Murray River - you can just imagine.. all kinds of ferries and paddle boats have probably been tethered to this wood over the years. The surfaces a roughly hewn and scarred, with remnant bolts trailing orange rust steaks down the wall. There’s something magical about the way aging corrugated iron and timber reminds you of things you’ve seen in Australian landscapes your whole life, and that you associated with the bush in either the heat or the cold. At night in summer the house clicks and ticks as it cools down, and there’s also the sound of the birds returning to the lake. Inside there’s a combined living and kitchen area. The kitchen is fully equipped with an old warhorse fridge and all the necessary pots and pans and cutlery, all you need is a little imagination and glass of wine. Sit around the 6 seater dining table and invite friends to join you. The wood burning heater will be set ready for you to enjoy. Relax on the comfy sofa with the fire lit and the birds chirping..and let yourself drift away. Downstairs you will find two bedrooms both with Queen size beds with one bedroom featuring beautiful wooden doors that open up to views of the lake. A central bathroom with shower and bath is also downstairs. The whole mezzanine level above contains a bedroom with a Queen size bed as well as a TV and DVD player with a selection of movies to choose from. This lake-house is perfect for entertaining and relaxing. Be it if you’re an avid cook or simply wish to sit on the verandah soaking the view of the lake, busy with bird life. We have several pairs of binoculars in the house and sitting on the deck watching the birdlife on the lake is a favourite past-time for most of our guests. The property itself is full of surprises and things to explore. Swimming hole - head down towards the lake from the front of the house and you will find a swimming hole, the water is clean and depending on the time of year a beautiful temperature. Jetty - you can set a table or some armchairs, start the BBQ (an original old farmers’ barbecue) and enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by water. The Shed - check out the shed where horses and gymkhanas hang out, right next to the old farmers jeep! Guest AccessYou have access to the whole property, we are happy to share it with those that appreciate the rawness and beauty of nature. Interaction with GuestsWe have a wonderful local who cares for our place and we are always here should you need anything. The NeighborhoodJust mins way from the Forrest Brewery, the Lakehouse is near Victoria’s Great Otway National Park. The lovely hamlet of Forrest and the nearby national park, some two hours from Melbourne, offer a great mix of small country town and farmland stretching to thick bush, while the surf at Apollo Bay, on the Great Ocean Road, is a mere 25 minute drive away. Only minutes away you will find the local pub, Forrest brewery and a milkbar. They have a regular market there. Other Things to NotePlease note: special rates apply for overnight stays. Activities There are world-renowned mountain bike tracks in the forest all around the farm. Walking around Lake Elizabeth is beautiful. Walking around our property is also beautiful, as is throughout the national forest surrounding the property. The boundaries of the property are the forest on one side and the river on the other. There was not enough intact to restore it authentically, so we have developed our own style that is vaguely steam-punk influenced. Almost every surface had to have something done to it. We thought we would strip out and move around a few panels and dividers, but we found that carriages were really tightly put together (all that rattling) and hard to pull apart. When we did get panels off, we had no idea what we would find. We completely stripped and rewired the electrical, and did plumbing from scratch. Renovating anything nearly a century old will have its challenges, but this was exceptional. It is not 5 star luxury, and certainly not for everyone, but it is one of a kind. Steam's popularity with guests has amazed us. Forrest is a gorgeous small town of weatherboard shacks, surrounded by towering Mountain Ash rain forest with lush ferny under-story. The dawn birdsong is extraordinary. There is a lot to do around Forrest even if you are not a mountain biker. Special features include : - 3 bedrooms. Can sleep 6 guests but 2 or 4 would be more comfortable. See Sleeping Options below. - Linen, towels, hand towels and tea towels are provided. Helmets. - Pets and children welcome. The yard is fenced but not necessarily dog proof. NO TV. There is a sound system, books and board games. Enter via Sanderson Lane. You cant miss it, it is the only train carriage at the elbow in the lane. SLEEPING OPTIONS The train can sleep six people, but four would be more comfortable. The small bed rooms used to be train seating compartments, only 2.1m square, so they are only just longer than a bed. The rooms are close together, the bath room is between the kids and second bedroom and there is not a lot of audio insulation. You can hear what is happening in the next compartment. It is ideal for: • A couple (with the whole train for themselves it is pretty spacious). • A couple and two kids. It should work well for: • A couple, and up to four kids. Two kids would need to sleep in one queen bed. It would be a great place for kids to bring a friend. • Two couples, as long as they were good friends. It would be close living. It may work for: • Four adults, one in each bed. The single beds are train beds, like caravan beds (750mm wide). • Any more adults would be possible, but only if you are planning to be out most of the day and out for dinner. If it a just place to sleep, it could work. BEDROOMS Master: Two compartments long, with a queen bed. Second: Single compartment with two thin single beds. Third: Single compartment with a queen bed. QUIRKY LOG HOUSE NEXT DOOR The house next door (Otway's Loft) was built using recycled materials, locally milled timber and train parts. The two properties can be rented together if you have a larger group. Together they can sleep a maximum of 14 (10-12 ideal) http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/vic/great-ocean-road/forrest/143843 CARRIAGE HISTORY The carriage is no stranger to conversion. It has had an amazing history, with 7 lives and 5 conversions. It was built as a First Class carriage in 1926 and converted between First and Second Class 4 times, then retired in 1983. More detailed history, some photos and original plans of the carriage are available on booking. THE GREAT AGE OF STEAM Steam, certainly wont be for everyone, but we have had great feedback from the young and the young at heart. There seems to be a great fondness for the "Great Age of Steam", when locomotives were king! At the turn of the century trains were the greatest technological achievement of humans, they opened new horizons, and were a symbol of power and progress. We hope we have tapped in to this, and we're excited to be able to offer this unique accommodation to guests.
