With the Lodge at Sunny Bay as your vacation base, you can easily drive or ferry to dozens of scenic and historic sites. A short 10 minute drive finds you in the historic Gig Harbor downtown waterfront, discovered in 1840 by Capt. Charles Wilke, USN, while seeking refuge in the Captain’s “gig” from a heavy storm during the United States Exploring Expedition. Wilke’s 1841 map of the Oregon Territory identifies the sheltered bay as ‘Gig Harbor’. Gig harbor traces its maritime heritage to the 1867 arrival of Samuel Jerisich, along with other immigrants from Sweden, Norway, and Croatia. These fishermen and boat builders, as well as loggers, formed the mainstay of the growth and prosperity of the community for decades. Until the Tacoma Narrows bridge was complete in 1940 linking the Gig Harbor peninsula with Tacoma, the primary means of transportation was steamship. The remnants of the old ferry dock in downtown Gig Harbor still provides a panoramic view of the Cascades, Mt. Rainier, and Pt. Defiance. The Lodge at Sunny Bay offers easy access to 3 of America's most outstanding National Parks: Mt. Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic. Charming Port Townsend, the once hopeful, yet ultimately shunned terminus for the transcontinental railroad, occupies an exquisite perch overlooking the confluence of Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Puget Sound, and is a mere 1 hr. 20 minute drive to the north. Of course there are also the exciting cities of Seattle and Tacoma much closer in proximity. With its Space Needle, Pike Place Market and Boeing tours, Seattle is an easy hour drive, (or a delightful 1 hr. Ferry ride from Bremerton, 20 miles up the road), while Tacoma, with its incredible Point Defiance Park & Zoo, Museum of Glass and glassblowing studio, and Lemay- America’s Car Museum, is just a short hop back over the bridge. After a day of sightseeing, golf, skiing, sailing, kayaking, or visiting the many of the excellent museums in the Seattle-Tacoma area, you can kick back at on the deck of the Lodge at Sunny Bay. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine as steaks sizzle on the grill, and experience Hale Passage and Fox Island reflect the spectacular palette of colors of eventide and the setting sun. Or, enjoy the Pacific Northwest traditional celebratory feast: succulent salmon caught in local waters grilled to perfection, with a cold glass of delicious locally crafted beer from the 7 Seas Brewery, a carefully balanced local whiskey from the heritage distillery, or perhaps a sampling from one of Washington or Oregon's outstanding wineries Prefer to dine out? The Lodge at Sunny bay is only 5 miles from downtown Gig Harbor, where you can find world-class dining at the snug JW restaurant, the genial Il Lucano Ristorante, or a killer breakfast/brunch at the Devoted Kiss. Choices abound. At the lower end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other familiar eateries are close and offer faster food alternatives. The larger, but still nearby towns of Tacoma, Port Orchard, and Bremerton boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget. For a quiet evening at the soothing Lodge, enjoy a movie or multiple TV viewing options on the cozy home theater’s large 52” HD TV. The home theater is well-equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and sink. For a quieter evening, curl up with a glass of wine and your favorite book – or one of ours – in front of a crackling fire.
