The SpaceWhen our youngest son was heading off to college, we were looking for a place to call 'home' that incorporated mountains, water, tranquility, mild winters, easy access, and a walkable beach. Discovering this nearly 2 acres of prime southern exposure 115' waterfront in the gorgeous South Puget Sound fit the bill perfectly. It is magnificently situated to provide- we think- some of the best views in the Sound. Many years later we share daily experiences that are simply breathtaking. Eagles, seals, and porpoises play endlessly within shouting distance from the deck. Building a newer residence to take advantage of it all was a no-brainer. The Lodge at Sunny Bay was designed by Margo to take advantage of light, seasons, views, and sounds. It is serenely quiet in the evenings with tantalizing twilight views that rival the most majestic daytime experiences. We are an easy 40 minutes from SEA-TAC Int'l Airport, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Seattle and Tacoma. In addition to its location in the center of America's historic Pacific Northwest maritime heritage, The Lodge at Sunny Bay is situated among some of America's most heart-stopping scenery, pastoral countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms and orchards. We want to share this magical place with people who love the pioneer and maritime history and this country's adventurous spirit. Guest AccessGuests will greatly enjoy the privacy of their individual rooms, as well as the use of the Home Theater with its sink, microwave, and refrigerator. It's an easy walk down the stairway to the beach where you can explore the wonders of the water and wildlife. Shared access of the kitchen, the deck and the Great Room will make the adventure completely relaxing and elegant. Interaction with GuestsWe look forward greeting and attending the needs of our guests while respecting their privacy. The NeighborhoodHave you ever been someplace or stood on a spot and said to yourself, 'I'm HOME!'? After 14 years on this property, we say it often and with heartfelt gratitude. Whether it's coffee on the deck as the morning unfolds, long walks on the beach at the end of a stressful day, kayaking among the seals and wildlife, or watching a winter storm through the Great Room windows with a cozy fire burning, it all comes down to the grateful sigh, 'We're home.' Getting AroundThe quaint and charming downtown of Gig Harbor is a 10 minute drive. The Harbor is a popular place to walk and enjoy the many shops an restaurants, or simply enjoy the scenery. Other Things to NoteThere is a marvelous cascading staircase from the house to the pristine beach, which is walk-able in either direction for miles.

The large, well-equipped kitchen will delight any chef. Culinary experts and amateurs alike will appreciate the fine and plentiful tools, utensils, and cookware provided for preparing fine meals. Enjoy dining inside the intimate Captain’s Cabin, with seating for 8-10 diners, or outside on the broad deck. With either choice, enjoy the ambiance of hummingbirds flitting about, boats transiting the passage, and the sunlight or moonlight dancing on the water--all part of your own private waterfront estate! With the Lodge at Sunny Bay as your vacation base, you can easily drive or ferry to dozens of scenic and historic sites. A short 10 minute drive finds you in the historic Gig Harbor downtown waterfront, discovered in 1840 by Capt. Charles Wilke, USN, while seeking refuge in the Captain’s “gig” from a heavy storm during the United States Exploring Expedition. Wilke’s 1841 map of the Oregon Territory identifies the sheltered bay as ‘Gig Harbor’. Gig harbor traces its maritime heritage to the 1867 arrival of Samuel Jerisich, along with other immigrants from Sweden, Norway, and Croatia. These fishermen and boat builders, as well as loggers, formed the mainstay of the growth and prosperity of the community for decades. Until the Tacoma Narrows bridge was complete in 1940 linking the Gig Harbor peninsula with Tacoma, the primary means of transportation was steamship. The remnants of the old ferry dock in downtown Gig Harbor still provides a panoramic view of the Cascades, Mt. Rainier, and Pt. Defiance. The Lodge at Sunny Bay offers easy access to 3 of America's most outstanding National Parks: Mt. Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic. Charming Port Townsend, the once hopeful, yet ultimately shunned terminus for the transcontinental railroad, occupies an exquisite perch overlooking the confluence of Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Puget Sound, and is a mere 1 hr. 20 minute drive to the north. Of course there are also the exciting cities of Seattle and Tacoma much closer in proximity. With its Space Needle, Pike Place Market and Boeing tours, Seattle is an easy hour drive, (or a delightful 1 hr. Ferry ride from Bremerton, 20 miles up the road), while Tacoma, with its incredible Point Defiance Park & Zoo, Museum of Glass and glassblowing studio, and Lemay- America’s Car Museum, is just a short hop back over the bridge. After a day of sightseeing, golf, skiing, sailing, kayaking, or visiting the many of the excellent museums in the Seattle-Tacoma area, you can kick back at on the deck of the Lodge at Sunny Bay. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine as steaks sizzle on the grill, and experience Hale Passage and Fox Island reflect the spectacular palette of colors of eventide and the setting sun. Or, enjoy the Pacific Northwest traditional celebratory feast: succulent salmon caught in local waters grilled to perfection, with a cold glass of delicious locally crafted beer from the 7 Seas Brewery, a carefully balanced local whiskey from the heritage distillery, or perhaps a sampling from one of Washington or Oregon's outstanding wineries Prefer to dine out? The Lodge at Sunny bay is only 5 miles from downtown Gig Harbor, where you can find world-class dining at the snug JW restaurant, the genial Il Lucano Ristorante, or a killer breakfast/brunch at the Devoted Kiss. Choices abound. At the lower end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other familiar eateries are close and offer faster food alternatives. The larger, but still nearby towns of Tacoma, Port Orchard, and Bremerton boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget. For a quiet evening at the soothing Lodge, enjoy a movie or multiple TV viewing options on the cozy home theater’s large 52” HD TV. The home theater is well-equipped with a refrigerator, microwave and sink. For a quieter evening, curl up with a glass of wine and your favorite book – or one of ours – in front of a crackling fire. The Lodge at Sunny Bay also offers WiFi for high-speed internet access. Use it to create exciting travel plans, savory dining options, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having! Check the details and photos listed elsewhere on this website to find many more appealing features of The Lodge at Sunny Bay. We invite you to be our guest for a fun and unforgettable experience that you will cherish and will want to share with friends and family again and again!
