The SpaceThis space was created in 1913 and retains much of its character from that era. People come to adore the house; it has a way of living on in people. Staying at the house is an experience in and of itself, because the surrounding area is so peaceful and the energy of the house is so uplifting. My family built and maintained this property, including the surrounding farm, since before they built the house. I am the manager of this house. I am usually home during your stays. I am sometimes in and out, sometimes gone completely.
If you need to use my house for your own meeting, family or friends' gathering, or retreat, please do let me know. If there is something you are wondering about, equipment or otherwise, just ask! Guest AccessGuests can access their bedroom or bedrooms, private bathroom, and porch on the second floor, and the common bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and living room on the first floor.
It's a family tradition to welcome strangers and treat them as friends.
If you are coming by yourself or with a partner, you'll take the master suite either upstairs, or downstairs, with your own private bathroom.
For groups larger than 6 people, I offer shared sleeping areas in 6 bedrooms (1-3 twin beds in a room, for example,) or can configure differently for up to 14 people.
Only one party of 10 or more may book this space at any given time.
If you are coming with a work group, please note that I have space for 6 people to have their own private bedrooms. If you bring more than 6 people, the bedrooms will be shared. You might find out if any of your colleagues are willing to share a room just in case.
Also, be aware that this spiritual retreat house is in use as such. Interaction with GuestsI am sometimes, yet not always present for the beginnings and endings of your stays. I am usually not around, but can be present, during it when needed, if it feels right (or I need to be.) In all cases, I'll provide a verbal and/or written orientation to my house so you know how to handle things when I'm not there. I like to see what you are good at first, and then fill in the blanks so your stay can happen efficiently. I do enjoy getting to know you and feel that meeting you is a great opportunity that Air B-n-B affords. My presence in the house will be there though, no matter where you are.
I have an indoor/outdoor cat, who is a working cat. His job is to keep the rodent population within the house in check and to take care of you. He spends a lot of time outside, especially in the summer, and also has a home in the basement. His name is Henrick. He spends very little time in Air B-n-B bedrooms. Henrick is known to take entire walks with guests down the gravel road. If you have your own pet, that shouldn't be a problem. He welcomes the presence of other pets and does not disturb them. If you have a pet, it is OK that you stay in my house with your pet. My pet is a pretty advanced creature :) The NeighborhoodThis house is located in the countryside between the cities of DeKalb and Rochelle. It is some driving distance to town--please keep this in mind if you are used to having everything at hand. There are some really great Air B-n-B's in DeKalb proper if you wish to be close to everything in that town. I want you to stay here because you want to stay here, because of no other reason.
What makes my neighborhood unique is the surrounding countryside. You can see for miles around my house, which is located at the top of a hill. There are trees, a creek, corn, soybeans, hills, the train, and flat land.
You can spend hours on my first or second floor porches in the summertime, just watching the world go by. Getting AroundIt's easy to get around. Just hop on Route 38, a few miles away, to go to NIU (a 20 minute drive,) or greater DeKalb. The Interstate, I-88, will take you all the way to Chicago and surrounding suburbs, and is straight down Fairview Drive, about 8 miles. You can see it from my house.
Restaurants I recommend in DeKalb include:
Tapa da Luna--good for guests with high class tastes. Also features a bar that is good for singles who need a higher vibration.
The Mediterraneo--a very professional, sit-down restaurant that will impress. Unique, and greek, food.
The Thai Pavilion--who wouldn't want to sit on a Thai yoga mat while eating their pad thai? A fav.
The Lincoln Inn--A sit down restaurant with standard American fare that is always extremely hoppin'.
Pita Pete's--if you're on the go, this is GREAT food! You will not be hungry, you will be satisfied, you will eat healthy.
The House Cafe--you cannot beat the food here. It also doubles as a local band venue, so expect to meet characters!
The closest restaurant to my home that I can recommend is Martha's Kitchen in Malta. It is a very local, mom-and-pop place. My great-grandfather used to eat at its earlier incarnation, The Bird Cage. Other Things to NoteFor a couple, the cost of a night is often, but not always (depending on the season) double my single individual price. This is affected by whether or not I intend to attract large groups to stay at the house. So, if you are part of a couple, or alone, feel free to inquire about price structure, because I am flexible.
Most people use Air B-n-B to get away from hotels, but some still expect Air hosts to act like them simply because that's what they are used to. However, we open our homes to you as people who want to provide a great place to live, rather than a standardized experience exclusively.
