The SpaceWindy Ridge is 1880's historic - it was once the post office and general store for 'Max VA.' Today its a place of relaxation and restoration. Contemplate mountains and cows all day from the front porch or back deck. Or adventure out to trails, rivers, caves, or small towns. Whatever you do, DON"T RUSH or you will violate the spirit of the place. Master bedroom, Guest bedroom, Bunkroom (4 beds), Den with stone fireplace, Dining Room, Kitchen, Great Room (with great views). Note: Its an historic home, those with severe dust allergies don't do well at Windy Ridge. No air conditioning, which is no problem. Guest AccessFull kitchen with staples; 1 fireplace; firebowl; hammock; 'Harry Potter Memorial' Games Closet Under the Stairs (bb guns, tent, slip n slide, croquet, etc); foosball table; dvd player; TV gets basic network channels Interaction with GuestsInteraction with guests is via phone at any time. The NeighborhoodAcross the street in the front is a farm. The yearling cows are skinny and skittish in spring, fat and sassy in the fall. Ditto across the Blue Ridge Parkway in the back. To the sides of the house are a few acres of fields and woods that children can play in. Taking walks on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must. Other Things to NotePLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO FROM WINDY RIDGE: MAYBERRY: If you are a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, you can drive 25 minutes to Mt. Airy NC where Andy grew up. The adorable old downtown has preserved the Snappy Lunch Counter where Andy ate a 5cent porch chop sandwich everyday all the way through school (EAT THERE), and has many shops, restaurants, and Mayberry experiences (tour the town in a Mayberry replica sheriff's car, etc.) WINERIES: This is a jumping off point for NC and VA wineries. Follow the NC winery trail in the Yadkin River Valley, centered upon the grandest winery east of California – Shelton Vineyards (25 minutes away – feels like Napa Valley). Travel thirty minutes up the Blue Ridge Parkway to Chateau Morissette, a lavish old-world castle with wine-tasting, etc. Multiple smaller wineries abound in this region. BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN MUSIC CENTER: is ten minutes south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They feature DAILY mountain musicians sitting around playin' and talkin' in rocking chairs. Pull up a chair. Then walk through the MOUNTAIN AND COUNTRY MUSIC MUSEUM to understand the history and culture behind such music. Mountain music is the root for bluegrass and country music. One and three mile hiking trails circle from the Music Center. REX THEATER: in Galax VA, 20 minutes away. Every Friday night there is a live local mountain music band that is also a live regional radio broadcast. The Rex is a grand old early 20th century restored theater. You will observe locals showing up after work, stomping their feet and sometimes moving to the front and demonstrating their original clogging and other indigenous dances. SHOPS & DOWNTOWN GALAX VA: 20 minutes away. Barr's fiddle shop is the hub of ‘mountain music' and anchors downtown. Antique shops, a book store, an arts center, bbq restaurant, ice cream, coffee shop and more. Poke around, see what you find. GALAX MOVIE THEATER, WALMART, ETC: The movie theater plays the current 2-3 most popular movies. Other typical stores are in the outer part of Galax. HIKING: One of the best hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway is 15 minutes south of Windy Ridge. Cumberland Knob has a 2.5 mile gorge hike that goes WAY down, criss crosses a roaring stream (lots of spots for kids and adults to wade, swim, picnic), then hikes WAY back up. There's also a gentle ¾ mile hike from parking simply to the knob. There are one or two gentle hiking trails at the Blue Ridge Music Center, 10 miles south of Windy Ridge. Multiple other hikes can be found along the parkway. TUBING AND CANOING THE NEW RIVER: many outfitters will set you up for a long or short canoe or inner tube trip down portions of the New River, within a 20-30 minute drive. BIKING: The NEW RIVER TRAIL is a bike trail formed from repurposed train tracks through the mountains, thus the grade is gradual at every point. The southern entry point is in downtown Galax VA, where there are also bike rentals. Another fun entry/exit/rental point is the river town of Fries, VA (if renting bikes, that's where we usually begin). VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL is a 50 minute drive away, ending in Abingdon, VA. CAVING: THIS IS OUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH KIDS! DEVILS DEN CAVE and park is 15 minutes drive north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's a sparsely maintained park. Bring flashlights, clothes for getting dirty, and rope if you have it. Park the car, hike ½ mile down, and you will find a hole in the mountain. Free climb into any of the 4 or 5 openings within sight. Stay in pairs! We do not know of anyone who has yet defined the depths of these caves, and you are on your own (watch out for poison ivy on the trail down and up). PEACEFUL HEART ALPACAS FARM: Five minutes north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. “Along one of America's most scenic roads, you will find Peaceful Heart Alpacas. Our 27 acre, alpaca farm is located at Mile Post 204 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just a few miles from the Virginia/North Carolina border. We feel blessed every day to wake up to pastures full of beautiful animals and a fiber arts studio and store located in our 100 year old farm house. Our alpaca farm and store is always open to visitors, free of charge." MOUNTAIN GOLF. There are several golf courses within 5-20 minutes, varying according to price and quality. If you walk, you'd better be in shape!

Enjoy a rich bluegrass music heritage at the Old Galax Fiddlers’ Convention, Houston Fest or enjoy a concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center. Downtown Galax is only 4 miles from the Speckled Trout Cabin where you can visit the Rex Theater every Friday night for the Blue Ridge Backroads where bands entertain & refreshments are served. They also host many Saturday concerts and community plays. While downtown, visit the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts or the City Gallery where you will find wares for sale by various fine artists. Don’t leave without having a wonderful smoothie or cup of gourmet coffee at Cones & Coffee, then visit the antique store next door and find just the treasure you are looking for. There are many quaint antique shops, gift shops, book stores, wine shops and more to pop in while you walk the beautiful downtown community of Galax. The fun doesn’t stop there… bike, walk or run on The New River Trail – then go fishing or kayaking in Chestnut Creek (both of these are right outside the Speckled Trout Cabin door!) Other outdoor activities include canoeing on The New River & hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Relax or venture out to sample mountain culture or outdoors fun. Windy Ridge is a 3 chimney, 2 acre, 1 front porch, 1 back deck, 3 bedroom, 1 hammock, 1 grassy terrace beautiful home from which to sample the VA/NC line's relaxing natural beauty. While uniquely overlooking the Blue Ridge Parkway. Windy Ridge is 1880's historic - it was once the post office and general store for 'Max VA.' Today its a place of relaxation and restoration. Contemplate mountains and cows all day from the front porch or back deck. Or adventure out to trails, rivers, caves, or small towns. Whatever you do, DON'T RUSH or you will violate the spirit of the place. Full kitchen with staples; 2 fireplaces; firebowl; hammock; 'Harry Potter Memorial' Games Closet Under the Stairs (bb guns, tent, slip n slide, croquet, etc); foosball table; dvd player. Across the street in the front is a farm. The yearling cows are skinny and skittish in spring, fat and sassy in the fall. Ditto across the Blue Ridge Parkway in the back. To the sides of the house are a few acres of woods that children can play in. PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO FROM WINDY RIDGE: MAYBERRY: If you are a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, you can drive 25 minutes to Mt. Airy NC where Andy grew up. The adorable old downtown has preserved the Snappy Lunch Counter where Andy ate a 5cent porch chop sandwich everyday all the way through school (EAT THERE), and has many shops, restaurants, and Mayberry experiences (tour the town in a Mayberry replica sheriff’s car, etc.) WINERIES: This is a jumping off point for NC and VA wineries. They feature DAILY mountain musicians sitting around playin’ and talkin’ in rocking chairs. Barr’s fiddle shop is the hub of ‘mountain music’ and anchors downtown. There’s also a gentle ¾ mile hike from parking simply to the knob. Another fun entry/exit/rental point is the river town of Fries, VA (if renting bikes, that’s where we usually begin). VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL is a 50 minute drive away, ending in Abingdon, VA. CAVING: THIS IS OUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH KIDS! DEVILS DEN CAVE and park is 15 minutes north on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Google directions. It’s a sparsely maintained park. “Along one of America’s most scenic roads, you will find Peaceful Heart Alpacas. Our alpaca farm and store is always open to visitors, free of charge.” MOUNTAIN GOLF. There are several golf courses within 5-20 minutes, varying according to price and quality. If you walk, you’d better be in shape!
