The SpaceThis one and a half bedroom apartment has a large living room/dining room, a big kitchen, and a bedroom that's roomy enough for an office as well. In addition, there is a small outdoor enclosed porch. that now contains a couch that can be opened into a single bed. Three people fit comfortably in this apartment. Guest AccessWifi service, sheets, towels, dishes, microwave, and other kitchen utensils are provided. There is a shared washing machine and drier. Interaction with GuestsI'm happy to share what we know about birding and other activities via email. The NeighborhoodI love everything about the neighborhood! Gamboa is small and charming. It is also historic; most of the houses including this one were built in the 30's to house a Division of the Panama Canal Company. Many of the residents work at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), arguably the best institution of its kind in the world. The boat that takes people to STRI's Barro Colorado Island (Monkey Island) departs from Gamboa. Gamboa has the ambiance of both an isolated outpost in the rainforest and a comfortable modern suburb. It is embedded in Soberania National Park and bordered on one side by the Panama Canal. Fingers of the jungle run between the houses in Gamboa, providing access for wildlife to our backyard. In addition, Gamboa is only 2 miles from Pipeline Road, a world-famous birding location, and close to numerous other birding locations that can be done as day trips. If you're interested in a canopy tower experience, the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center has a great one on Pipeline Road(URL HIDDEN)Gamboa is also centrally located for other activities. It is a 5-minute walk to the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, with its many tours and other amenities. Watching the huge ships pass through the Miraflores Locks (20 minutes away) is a must-do. And it's only an hour to either the Pacific or the Caribbean coasts(URL HIDDEN) An advantage of renting a house or apartment and doing your own cooking is that you can take advantage of the amazing selection of fresh fish at the fish market in Panama City and of the locally-grown fruit and vegetables at the market (Abastos) there, both about a half-hour away. Getting AroundThere are buses into Panama City, but I haven't used them and don't know how convenient they are. Taxis are not terribly expensive - we took one from the city to Gamboa for $25 (in 2014). It would be more from the airport. Car rental is not hugely expensive, but be aware that there is mandatory insurance which can double the cost, and that if you're planning to use the Corredor Norte or Sur, you need a card. You may be able to get one from the rental car company. Other Things to NotePlease note that there is a three-day minimum. Contact me for reduced rental rates for two or more months.

Beautiful modern kitchen, four bathrooms, kids area, large decks, swimming pool, balcony and views. Huge louvered doors open up onto two large teak decks which are excellent for entertaining. House comes complete with gas BBQ, 10 meter swimming pool for cooling off from the tropical heat. Local things to do and amenities: You are a ten minute walk to the famous birding mecca, Pipeline Road. Fifteen minute walk to Gamboa Resort lookout tower. 10 minute walk to public dock where there are boat rentals for tours of the Gatun Lake or Rio Chagras for bass fishing. Access to community tennis courts with an international tennis pro. Ping Pong and Pool table in kids area. Morning and evening fly overs of Yellow Lord parrots. Location: Gamboa is located exactly half way up the Panama Canal, which puts it 1 hours drive from either the Pacific or the Atlantic coast. We are a unique community of international professionals, locals and Smithsonian scientist. I can also help with aspects of your travel plans if you need more assistance. Interaction with GuestsKarmir will meet you when you arrive and show the house and explain things. She lives in Gamboa so can help you once you settle in. She speaks Spanish and a little English. The NeighborhoodGamboa is a sleepy town of 200 residence. Gamboa was once the booming hub of the Panama Canal Dredging Division with over 2000 residences. There is a small "tiendita" in the little neighborhood of Santa Cruz called "El Vieja Tiendita" Getting AroundI have contacts for transportation to and from the airport as well as touring Panama and the surrounding areas. I also can help connect you with one of the best tour/birding guides in Panama.

The SpaceBuilt in the 1930's for the U.S. dredging division of the canal, the houses in Gamboa are a rare example of good tropical design: large roof overhangs, tons of windows and ventilation, and raised off the ground for plenty of outdoor covered space (great for hammocks). Refurbished original wood floors, and a new deck in the back yard perfect for viewing flora and fauna. Mangos, plantains, and coconuts in back yard when in season. Guest AccessFridge, gas stove, toaster, various other kitchen appliances. Very comfortable king-size bed. Also a comfortable couch for extra guest but it's in the living room with lots of windows and streetlights outside. Tons of books, couple yoga mats, weights, binoculars, TV(no cable), gaming console, some movies, and a machete. There's also a ping-pong table and dart board in the chilling area downstairs. Interaction with GuestsI live next door and work up the street so I can help you out with anything you need. The NeighborhoodIt's quiet, the neighbors are friendly and diverse, there's constantly animals roaming the yard and skies, and there are many outdoor adventures to be had, day or night. I recommend the Rainforest Discovery Center or a hike along Pipeline road. There is a small store for buying the very basics, and a few places to grab a simple lunch. Otherwise it is advised to bring groceries from the city. Getting AroundThere is a bus to and from Albrook Terminal about every 2 hours. Takes 45 minutes and costs 65 cents. Other Things to NoteThere is a fruit and herb garden that can be utilized depending on the season. May be in need of TLC.
