Do Drul Chorten is a very important stupa in Sikkim. An uphill walk up to the monastery with alpine forests on either side, leads to a calm and picturesque setting. This holy stupa was built under the direction of Late Truslshi Rimpoche in 1945. It is part of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. There are 108 prayer wheels and the wheels have a special meaning. Turning of these wheels goes along with the chanting of the mantras engraved on them. While turning the wheels, one ought to say ‘hail to the jewel in the lotus’. One can see the devout and monks do the same. The sound of a collective chant emanates from the prayer and meditation rooms in the monastery can also be heard in the background. The famous Do Drul Chorten has a gold plated spire. The Chorten is encircled by Chorten Lhakhang and Guru Lhakhang that boast of the two colossal statues of Guru Rinpoche (as Guru Padmasambhava is popularly referred as in these parts). One can see young and old lamas studying and working in the complex of Do Drul Chorten. Little monks peep out of the windows, looking radiantly robed in crimson silk, and with an impish smile on their young faces. This monastery has a great sanctity and the Sikkimese people from all over the state come to pay their respects. The monastery has rooms for religious studies, a well stocked library with important books and relics and other religious objects. As a result of this there is a fair amount of activity in the monastery. It also houses a small shop where authentic Tibetan artifacts, blessed by the lama’s (priest), can be purchased.
The Enchey Monastery was established in 1909 above Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. It belongs to the Nyingma order of Vajrayana Buddhism. The monastery built around the then small hamlet of Gangtok became a religious centre. The location was blessed by Lama Drupthob Karpo, a renowned exponent of tantric (adept) art in Buddhism with flying powers; initially a small Gompa was established by him after he flew from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim to this site. The literal meaning of Enchey Monastery is the Solitary Monastery. Its sacredness is attributed to the belief that Khangchendzonga and Yabdean , the protecting deities reside in this monastery. As, according to a legend, Guru Padmasambhava had subdued the spirits of the Khangchendzonga, Yabdean and Mahakala here. In view of this legend, the religious significance of Enchey Monastery is deeply ingrained in every household in Sikkim. It is also believed that these powerful deities always fulfill the wishes of the devotees.
