The ancient and historic town of Melrose, of which Gattonside is part, sits on the banks of the Tweed and makes a great base for any holiday in the Scottish Borders. It has a famous ruined abbey founded in 1136 and this is reputed to be the resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart.
Later, Melrose became a centre of trade, especially for wool and textiles, although not to the extent of some of its neighbouring towns.
Most visitors see the Abbey and surrounding gardens which are run and maintained by The National Trust.
The Commentators House, close by, contains artefacts and carvings which have been found in the area over the years.
The Roman history of the area is brought to life in the Trimontium Exhibition which marks the start of a 4 mile walk of the major Roman sites in the immediate vicinity.
Melrose has an abundance of quality shops, delicatessens, butchers, fishmonger, fruit and veg shop, mini supermarkets, chemist, high class clothes and gift shops, beauty therapy, hairdressers as well as loads of places to eat in hotels, bars or tea rooms with the famous Scottish home baking available just about everywhere!
The Greenyards, home of M.R.F.C and founders of the world famous seven a side rugby founded in 1883, is adjacent to the town centre and hosts “The Melrose 7's with all its international guests in April every year.( (website: hidden))
