The kids area on the second floor is designed for play while the parents are downstairs relaxing or watching a movie. Interaction with GuestsWhen this property was listed in October 2014 we knew we wanted to own the house. John lived in Gilbertsville through high school and college until his first career job took him out of New York State. Gilbertsville has remained in his heart and many of his vacations have taken him back to his roots. His children spent weeks of many summers with their loving grandparents who lived in another beautiful home in Gilbertsville. That home was sold when the grandparents retired to Florida, before John was ready to buy it. Years later he had an opportunity to purchase this home in Butternut Valley. We are ready to share it with our guests. The NeighborhoodThe National Register of Historic Places awarded recognition of the entire village of Gilbertsville as an Historic District in May 1983. Overlook Park is a 100 year old park next to a stone arch bridge and surrounded by stone buildings. The Gilbertsville Free Library was built in 1818 as an academy and was converted to a library in 1888. It was the first Free Association Library in Otsego County. Getting AroundOur house is approximately a 45-50 minute drive from Cooperstown and the dreams field baseball park. The All Star Village baseball fields in Oneonta are only a 25-30 minute car ride from our house in Gilbertsville. Other Things to NoteThe house itself retains much of it's historical features. The hardwood floors were just refinished and are gorgeous. The molding and wood trim has been cleaned and painted. The children's rooms under the attic eaves are great for little ones and there is a large bedroom with a full size upstairs as well for supervising adults. The living room is spacious for a large group with couches cozy enough for napping or sitting with a book or a tablet.

At the last streetlight out of town, you'll find the enchanting country estate of Valle Vue. This historic country house was built in the 1850's and has been completely renovated with modern amenities while still retaining many of its original details. The property has 37 private acres of former farmland, where apples, turnips, corn and maple syrup were once harvested alongside roaming sheep and chickens. In fact, the basement still has a root cellar once used to store produce in the winter months. You'll spend your summer days in various vignettes throughout the grounds, including the gardens, hammock and creek, all overlooking the property's original namesake - a panoramic view of the valley. The fall foliage cannot be beaten, and the property transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months of the year. The home itself combines the charm of an 1850s Dutch Colonial farmhouse with vintage and modern furniture as well as contemporary art. As an artist and gallery owner (respectively), the owners have a strong passion for collecting and displaying artworks from an international body of contemporary artists, from as far as Africa, Israel, and The Netherlands, and as close as, Montreal, Los Angeles, and even Upstate New York. Their home features a diverse array of works – including drawings, paintings, sculptures, and pieces that blur any real categorization – that enter into a dialogue with the rest of the home’s design and challenge otherwise contrasting aesthetics. The ground floor centers around the parlor, and the the formal dining room features a wood-burning fireplace before meandering through a fully stocked chef's kitchen with breakfast table just off of the sun porch entrance. The sun porch is stocked with Wellies for adventuring on the grounds and exits into the herb garden and patio. Also extending from the parlor are two adjacent sitting rooms that open into one of several porches for lounging. The second floor houses all four bedrooms, including a King en suite with office, two Queens en suite and a single Twin room. The Twin guest has access to private full bathroom down the hallway. Each en suite bathroom features original cast-iron bathtubs, while the hallway bathroom has a shower. Other amenities include sleds, snowshoes, science fiction novels, a Stephen King collection and art books. Though privately situated, this artists' country escape is walkable to Gilbertsville, a curious little village of mansions and quaint general stores. Gilbertsville is right in the heart of The Butternut Valley in New York’s Otsego County. Once called “the most beautiful and fertile valley in the State of New York,” The Butternut Valley is defined by its lush farmland and majestic mountains. While originally a farm town, Gilbertsville transformed in the early 1900s, when wealthy New Yorkers began building mansions in grand English Tudor and Romanesque styles with immense polo fields as an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Since the 1920s, Gilbertsville has morphed into an artist enclave, with several studios and specialty shops. Today, Gilbertsville holds a spot on the New York State Registry for National Historic Locations. Additionally, the beach, fishing and boating at Gilbert Lake State Park is just 20 minutes from the property, and don't forget the Baseball Hall of Fame in nearby Cooperstown. The home and surrounding property, which includes a breathtaking view of The Butternut Valley from an easy accessible hillside overlook, provide an idyllic and tranquil escape to recharge from metropolitan life.
