Penny will ensure your stay at Portsmouth is a memorable experience and can provide information about Nevis and all the activities available. She can arrange car hire in advance of your arrival and recommend dining options around the Island. ABOUT NEVIS Nevis is a 36 square mile (96 square km.) unspoiled island jewel located in the Caribbean Sea 200 miles south of Puerto Rico and just west of Antigua. The Island is dominated by Nevis Peak which rises to a height of 3,262 feet in the centre and is encircled by one main Island road. On his second voyage to the New World in 1493 Christopher Columbus spied the Peak covered in clouds, which he thought was snow, and named the Island “Nuestra señora de las nieves” or “Our lady of the snows” - hence the name Nevis. She is also affectionately referred to as “the Queen of the Caribees”. The interior of the Island boast a lush rain forest while on the Caribbean side there are miles of unspoiled quiet beaches. The capital Charlestown is a charming town with many historical buildings , including the birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton, the first United States Secretary of the Treasury. The average air temperature is 79F (26C) with humidity of 71.5%. An average annual rainfall of 55 inches contributes to the lush green foliage and abundant wildlife. You will find goats and donkeys wandering along the roads, as well as the green vervet monkeys which inhabit the Island The unspoiled charm of Nevis allows visitors to step back in time to a quieter way of life which is unhurried and relaxed. A few years ago when enquiring in a local hardware store when they expected to receive a shipment of screwdrivers, your host was informed by the sales person “the boat fetches when she fetches” – that says it all – the ultimate relaxation of this magical island.

Built during the days of grand sugar plantations, Vervain Mill was originally a working, wind-powered mill for processing sugar cane. Located on the southeast side of the island, part way up the hill toward Mt. Nevis where ocean breezes cool and refresh, Vervain Mill offers three bedrooms, three baths, beautiful furnishings, swimming pool, gazebo, architectural ruins, sweeping views, and lots of privacy. The first level of the mill includes two large bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed and one with twin beds. Each has French doors opening to the lawn and pool, and each has a private bath. The stone-walled main floor of the tower, which includes the kitchen and indoor living/dining room, opens onto a dramatic wraparound terrace with sweeping views of the Atlantic and of Mt. Nevis. The large terrace includes sitting and dining areas covered by a series of flying canopies that provide shade with minimal interruption of the view. The third level is an airy bedroom with a queen-size bed, private bath, and two beautiful arched windows. The top floor is a sitting room with two daybeds, writing desk, and walkout terrace overlooking fields and ocean. Windows and doors are screened. The house is naturally cooled by its thick stone walls and a lovely breeze. There is rarely an uncomfortable night. The Mill's 1.75-acre grounds are landscaped with an assortment of palm trees and flowering shrubs. Families of monkeys are frequently seen in the lower yard in the morning or afternoon as they frolic their way up or down the hill. Next to the mill stands the ruin of the original boiling house. The swimming pool has incredible views over pasturelands, up the mountain, and out to sea. Next to the pool is a gazebo, the perfect place to read anytime of day or watch sunsets. The gazebo is also a very atmospheric place for a private wedding. Amenities include private swimming pool, maid service, washer and dryer, internet connection, VCR and DVD, stereo with CD/tape player, and a well-equipped kitchen. Electricity is 110v. With prior notice, guests can arrange for catered dinners. Keywords: Restored Sugar Mill

A charming cottage with breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic before you and Mount Nevis behind you. Nestled in lush gardens a top a quiet road in Gingerland a stone’s throw from Golden Rock Hotel, this idyllic cottage is built in a breezy, open style and is meticulously maintained. The cottage is furnished with a tasteful mix of vintage and new. Taj McCall, approximately 1,800 square feet, has two bedrooms, TV, Wi-Fi, several large fans, an on-deck swimming pool, and even a brand new ice cream maker. The master bedroom has a Queen and the second bedroom has twin beds. The bathroom has been modernized and a brand-new kitchen has been added with dishwasher. From the new pool and expansive deck, one can hear the ocean waves crashing on Windward Beach and enjoy stargazing at night. We arrange for easy complimentary pick-up in St. Kitts by our favorite driver, ‘Sea Moss’, who will deliver you to Reggae Beach where you will be taken on a 7-minute boat ride to Nevis. We also provide a welcome basket of groceries, wine and Carib beer. Twice-weekly maid service and all maintenance and utilities are included. Nevis is a tiny tropical island formed around an extinct volcano with a rainforest around the peak. Though long since independent from its colonial past, it retains a unique British charm. Nevis has escaped heavy development as a tourism spot -- the key to the peace, quiet and leisurely pace that are its greatest charms. The countryside – and Nevis is mostly countryside -- has an untamed and rustic quality, as in herds of goats roaming the roads. The weather is a constant treat. Daytime temperatures seldom vary from a balmy 80°F and it’s comfortably warm at night. Nevis is a wonderful throwback: all the pleasures of the Caribbean, before the Caribbean was overrun with commercialism. A rare and beautiful gem of an island.
