The SpaceThe main house is a labor of love for us. As such, you will find a fun family environment that is open and welcoming. The kitchen, dining room, and living room are an open layout and you will find the kitchen contains any pots and pans you need, firewood by the porch, and a wardrobe full of boardgames in the living room. There is also wifi and the living room tv has a dvd player and apple tv. There is a bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and a futon , 2 queen bedrooms and a twin room upstairs. There are also an extra twin mattress and two very comfy couches if you expect a crowd :) A honeymoon suite above the garage is available in a separate listing. Guest AccessWe want this place to be as special to your family as ours, so please enjoy the house, porches, and dock. If you would like to use the canoe, kayak, or crab pots, please enjoy them carefully. The water off the dock is quite shallow (4 feet on average) so please enter carefully from the lower dock and do not jump or dive off the dock. The closest beaches are Cedar Island, which with extremely shallow and calm water is ideal for children. or Atlantic Beach in Morehead. An outdoor shower is next to the garage and helpful with removing initial sand from little feet. There is a marina nearby to launch a boat if you would like to dock your own at the house while you are visiting. There is also a nearby ferry that can take you to Portsmouth Island for a day or further out to Ocracoke or Hatteras Islands. Interaction with GuestsWe do not live nearby so at arrival, you will be greeted by the caretaker Mike who will check you in and lives nearby in case of emergency. All our information will be given to you so for any advice or questions, please contact us. Other than any communication with us, you will have complete privacy. The NeighborhoodExpect to be isolated, Atlantic has 600 people, a take out grill, and beautiful views but you will need to stop at a grocery store in Beaufort, 40 minutes away, on your drive out. There is a small convenience store about 15 minutes away on Cedar Island. That said, it is a blast from the past where you can truly relax. If you get "cabin fever", nearby Beaufort is a lovely coastal town that is worth a trip, complete with lovely waterfront restaurants and a sighting of wild ponies if you get lucky. Getting AroundThere is space for about 4-5 cars in front of the house but please do not park in the backyard as it hurts the septic field.

The Smyrna recreational fields are located close by with walking paths, tennis, soccer, softball/baseball and basketball courts that are open to the public. A mere 1 mile from our cottage is the well-known Poseidon Dive facility. You can arrange for half-day or full-day dive trips to several of our local area wrecks. • Beaufort, N.C. A short distance from the cottage, approximately 15 minutes, is the historic town of Beaufort – voted Coolest Small Town in America 2013! There you can enjoy dining at locally known restaurants such as Clawson’s, Aqua, Stillwater, and the Spouter’s Inn Restaurant. There is an abundance of shopping on the waterfront in Beaufort. You can take a sunset cruise, rent kayaks on the waterfront, and even rent a water taxi to take you to various locations nearby, including Cape Lookout Lighthouse, and Shackleford Banks. For the lover of history, the Old Burial Grounds, the Maritime Museum and Wooden Boat Building facility (part of the Maritime Museum) offer insight into the history and culture of this area. • Morehead City, N.C. Morehead City is approximately 20 minutes away. On the waterfront you can find charter fishing boats for half-day, full-day trips and even sunset cruises. There is also shopping and some of the best local restaurants and bars (Beach Bums Pizzeria, Jack’s, The Sanitary Restaurant, Ruddy Duck…to name a few). To learn about the unique history of our area, make sure to visit The History Place (museum) on Arendell Street. • Atlantic Beach, N.C. In Atlantic Beach, over the causeway, experience our beautiful Crystal Coast beaches! If you enjoy surf boarding, there is no better place to be! Also make time to visit the Civil War Era Fort Macon. • Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. In Pine Knoll Shores experience the amazing N.C. Aquarium. If you prefer a quieter beach experience, Pine Knoll Shores has several public beach access areas. Sea turtles have been known to nest in this area. • Cedar Island. Cedar Island is known for duck hunting, fishing, and the Cedar Island ferry which takes you to Okracoke Island. Cedar Island is approximately 20 miles from our cottage. • Ocracoke Island, NC. Take the Cedar Island Ferry (20 miles from our cottage) to Ocracoke Island and spend the day visiting this community. The best way to enjoy Ocracoke is by renting a bicycle or golf cart on the island in order to access local shops, bars, and restaurants. • Cape Carteret / Swansboro, N.C. Have children? MacDaddy’s in Cape Carteret/Swansboro is the place to go for bowling, go carts, batting cages, video games, wonderful food, and much more. • Fishing. Depending on the time of year, you will find flounder, spanish, wahoo, cobia, blues, kings, trout, snapper, puppy drum, and mullet in abundance. There is also clamming and the local salty oysters are amazing. Catch your own fresh shrimp. • Diving. There are numerous diving opportunities found in this area. The Crystal Coast is known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” To access these wrecks, you can take your own boat or use one of many dive shops located throughout the county. Poseidon Dive facility is a mere 1 mile from our cottage. You can arrange for half-day or full-day dive trips to several of the local wrecks. • Churches. There are churches of many denominations within a short drive from the cottage. Walk to and visit the historic Straits United Methodist Church, only 100 yards away. The church has weathered many a downeaster storm, and the beautiful historic architecture exists to this day and is worth seeing and enjoying at a Sunday Service with the friendly members from the Straits community. • Entertainment. Our cottage is located in a very quiet area, but within a short drive of restaurants and bars in the town of Beaufort which provide local live music on weekends throughout the year. During the summer, there is nothing better than enjoying a meal on Front Street in Beaufort, and then going to the Beaufort Docks to listen to local musicians. Also enjoy walking along the Front Street Docks to see the many motor yachts and sport fishing boats that call Beaufort home, or who are visiting on their travels up and down the coast. There are also many specialty shops for those looking for a good deal, or for a memento of their travels to this area. • Special events to consider when determining when to book your stay: * February: There is a Down East Mardi Gras, featuring the Cajon Ziedeko band Unknown Tongues, in February of each year. You should visit their website for exact dates. This is something locals faithfully attend and something everyone should experience at least once. All food is prepared New Orleans style. Make sure to bring your costume and dress in Mardi Gras appropriate attire * February. Need a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? In February, there is the infamous, and local, Chocolate Festival, in Morehead City, NC at the Civic Center. Nothing is more romantic and entertaining. * September. The Pirate Invasion takes place in Beaufort, NC in September of each year. This is an outrageous, fun filled, weekend gathering. Bring your best pirate costume. * October of each year – the infamous Seafood Festival takes place in Morehead City, N.C. * Each Saturday, there is a local Farmer’s Market open to the public on the grounds of the Beaufort Courthouse. Purchase some local honey, vegetables, and/or crafts. * In Emerald Isle there is an annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. * Each summer, there is the wooden boat building event in Beaufort, NC. It is a must see. * December. The Decoy Festival takes place in Harker’s island and is the first weekend in December.

I renovated this over 200 year-old property with much care over the last fifteen years, maintaining the original charm while bringing it up-to- date with modern amenities, and with the original heart pine flooring. The house itself is extremely relaxing to be in, with three porches, but the areas of Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout, both national parks, are the real draw, whether you're looking for excellent fishing, shelling, secluded beaches, white sand, wild horses, a plethora of wildlife, all sorts of birds, museums, nearby access to deep-sea fishing charters, ten-minute ferries to the islands, round trip $15 ... departing every half hour. Beaufort has wonderful restaurants, park your car or boat and experience local fare or world-class meals. If you bring a boat, there's a neighborhood boat ramp about two hundred yards from the property, or use the free NC boat ramp just before the Harkers Island Bridge, only about a half mile away, and with plenty of parking for your vehicle and trailer. This is immediate access to a wonderful fishing area, whether you're going for mackerel or drum, flounder or bluefish. I've even caught octopus and eel. This is really one of the best fishing areas around, but there are so many other things to do as well, both for kids and adults. It's my favorite spot in the world, I don't think there's any place as relaxing on earth as the Cape Lookout National Seashore area. I've never had any problems with damage or theft, so I don't require additional deposits for these, unless your name is Anmol Patar, who stole towels, pillows, and sofa cushions from the house. If your name IS Anmol Patar, there is a $50k damage deposit, per day.... The cabin is a labor of love for us. As such, you will find a fun family environment that is open and welcoming. The kitchen, dining and living room are an open layout and you will find the kitchen fully equipped for your needs. If you come during the winter, we have a masonry fireplace with wood on the front porch and there is a wardrobe full of games and art supplies in the living room. There is also WiFi, the living room TV has apple TV as well as a DVD player and we have a large collection of movies. There are two master bedrooms, one up and one down with queen beds and full bathrooms. The downstairs master also has a futon. Two additional rooms are upstairs. One features a queen bed, the other two twins. They share a full bath, but the twin room also has a small attached area with a sink and a toilet. There are also two extra twin mattresses and two comfy couches if you expect additional company! We want this place to be as special to your family as ours, so please enjoy the house, porches and dock. If you would like to use the canoe, kayak or crab pots, please enjoy them carefully. The water off the dock is quite shallow (avg. 4 ft) so please enter carefully from the lower dock and do not jump or dive off the dock. The closest beaches are Cedar Island (shallow calm waters on Pamlico Sound ideal for children) or Atlantic Beach opposite Morehead City. Cedar Creek Marina is nearby to launch a boat if you would like to dock your own at the cabin while you are visiting so you can get over to Core Banks and explore the area's waters. There is also a ferry at Morris Marina in Atlantic that can take you to Portsmouth Island for the day. Another ferry at Cedar Island takes you to Ocracoke Island, which is also a wonderful day trip. We do not live nearby, so at arrival you will be met by our caretaker, Mike, who will check you in and lives nearby in case of an emergency. All our information will be given to you, so for any questions or advice, please contact us. Other then any communication with us, you will have complete privacy. Expect to be isolated, Atlantic has 600 people, a take-out grill and Morris Marina grill; as well as beautiful views, but you will need to stop in Morehead City or Beaufort at the grocery store (about 30 - 40 minutes away. There is also a liquor store in Beaufort. There is a convenience store about 12 mile away in Cedar Island and a small grocery in Smryna (17 miles). That said, it is a blast from the past where you can truly relax. If you get "cabin fever", nearby Beaufort is a lovely, historic, coastal town that is worth a visit, complete with wonderful waterfront restaurants, the pirate Blackbeard's home, a maritime museum and a sighting of wild ponies across Taylor's Creek if you get lucky! Parking areas are clearly identified. Please do not park in marked areas as that is our septic field. Please respect the house and furnishings. This is a family vacation home that we are opening up since we are using it less frequently. Please treat it as your own home. Please, no smoking inside. House trained, flea-free animals are allowed with approval, so please include information about your pets if you would like to bring them. Use common sense on the dock and in the water - NO SWIMMING AT NIGHT. Please load and run the dishwasher before you leave, wash your beach towels and leave beds unmade in the rooms used so we can change the linens. Finally, watch the sun as it sets and go stargazing on the dock at least once, but preferably every night. (Mats are available if you prefer lying down to watch -- August can bring spectacular meteor showers if the sky cooperates). The true magic is on the dock.

Hyggelig (hoo-ga-lee) is a Danish word expressing an atmosphere of well-being, comfort, and togetherness: a grand coziness found right here in Marshallberg, NC! Marshallberg is a peaceful little fishing village on Core Sound with a sense of place and permanence. Marshallberg streets are perfect for dog-walking and biking. Its shallow shores are ideal for clamming, birding, and kayaking. Cape Lookout, Harker's Island and Shackleford Banks are a short boat ride from the Marshallberg boat ramp.
