So quiet and peaceful. Guest: Sabrina & Michael Date of Stay: 09/15/13 Review Submitted: 10/1/13 We had a great time – the house was well equipped, comfortable and clean. The area is so quiet and relaxing. It was a truly restful vacation experience. We saw eagles and seals while kayaking in West Harbor. We really enjoyed biking and hiking the Schoodic Peninsula. Recommended for: Couples, Sightseeing Acadia National Park, Kayake, Relaxing, Privacy We had a nice week at this house. Guest: Cindy M. Date of Stay: 07/26/13 Review Submitted: 8/1/13 We had a nice week at this new house overlooking Gouldsboro Bay (I think). Nice easy kayak launch down the hill from the house. Lots of nearby hiking and sights. Schoodic point (part of Acadia) is nearby, but the bigger park on My Dessert is about 1 hour south. There is a nice private beach in nearby Corea. Be aware that the stairs in the house are steep and creaky. Aside from that, great house. BONUS that it's the only house visible from the street. Very private. Recommended for: Couples, Families, Traveling with a Dog. Our stay in Matt and Nicole's cottage was fantastic. Guest: Daniel R. Date of Stay: 06/4/13 Review Submitted: 6/25/13 Our stay in Matt and Nicole's cottage was fantastic. It's a gorgeous piece of property with a very secluded feel. It doesn't have the vast ocean views but was still extremely peaceful. The house was beautiful, cozy, and very well stocked. You really feel like it's your vacation home and not some bare-bones rental. We really only had to buy perishable food— even the pantry was fully stocked. They did a great job making us feel at home with notes on how to use everything in the home and where the best local places are. It's a little bit of a drive to Acadia and Bar Harbor but it was nice to be away from the tourist scene and Ellsworth is close enough to make trips to get food and supplies. We would definitely stay again and recommend this to anyone who's interested in a nice getaway. Recommended for: Families, Friends, Couples Beautiful home Guest: sensei (chicago) Date of Stay: 06/30/12 Review Submitted: 11/25/12 We loved staying in this home. It was away from everything, yet close enough to be in Acadia within minutes. After driving through Bar Harbor, we were happy to be away from crowds. Each morning we had breakfast outside, facing the water. Each night the bullfrogs sang us to sleep. The only people we saw all week were paddling by.The kids loved swinging in the hammock and exploring the property. The house was well stocked with everything and was spotless. We have stayed in rental houses throughout the country and none have been as well stocked as this one. We loved the wall of windows in the living room and seeing the moon reflecting over the water. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone who wants seclusion and who would like to enjoy nature. It is a beautiful, comfortable home. Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway. Truly the way life should be Guest: happy traveler (New Boston, PA) Date of Stay: 09/29/12 Review Submitted: 10/09/12 My husband and myself along with our two four legged babies really enjoyed our week here. The cottage is everything described and then some. It was so comfortable, we didn't feel a need to go anywhere! Beautiful spot, secluded. Bald eagles in the cove viewed from the windows. The dogs had a blast as well. Thank you for the shopping tips. We've always gone into Ellsworth, never realized Milbridge was so much closer. Guidebook came in handy for that and we got the last bit of clams before state shut down for fresh water runoff due to the rain. We love this part of Maine and would definately rent here again. Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway. Beautiful, Comfortable Isolation Guest: Marybeth (Boston, MA) Date of Stay: 07/07/12 Review Submitted: 07/19/12 Your vacation home is wonderful. It is thoughtfully designed (the living room feels like a tree house!) and very well-stocked (even doggy towels) making for a relaxing vacation. The isolation is so peaceful especially from the hammock by the water. We went to Schoodic most days, especially after the one time we ventured into the main park. Schoodic was never crowded, easy to bike, and the views were dramatic. Your home allowed us to have the laid-back vacation of our dreams in absolute comfort. Thank you! The classic cottage hovers over Gouldsboro Bay. Relax on the deck with coffee or wine and enjoy the loons, cormorants, herons and, at times, seals skimming the ocean waters. Completely private, the only sound is the wind whistling through the trees.

Our charming oceanfront cottage is situated on two acres of lawns and woods overlooking Pigeon Hill Bay and the open Atlantic. This three bedroom, two bath cottage features a traditional knotty pine interior and a deck and covered porch where you can watch for blue herons, loons, and bald eagles, enjoy a good book, or experience the serenity of the sun and moon rising over the water. Located on the lovely Petit Manan Point peninsula along a quiet, scenic road which ends in a wildlife refuge 1\2 mile away, the cottage property extends across the road to the shore--where there is private lawn, sitting area, and water access. The refuge has hiking trails and lots of wild blueberries free for the picking. Wonderful ocean and island views from throughout the cottage. The shore is ideal for putting in kayaks and kids love to explore tide pools and look for sea glass, shells and crabs here. There is a public boat launch 1/4 mile up the road. All rates are subject to the 8% Maine Lodging Tax. Pets may be allowed based on prior approval by owner and additional pet fee--please inquire. We are less than 10 miles to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, IF you could go via boat. However, it is just under one hour to drive there--which most of our guests do for a day trip. The Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park is closer, much less crowded and very beautiful--25 minute drive from the cottage. Make sure you go to the actual Point and hang out on the big rocks on the shore. An interesting hike there is the Anvil Trail. The Bar Harbor Ferry provides service between Winter Harbor/Schoodic Point area across the bay to Bar Harbor where you can make connections to the free Island Explorer shuttle buses which take you all around Acadia National Park. For information on the Bar Harbor Ferry call (207) 288-4585 or (207) 546-2927. See the park maps at: http://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/upload/schoodic.pdf http://www.acadiamagic.com/schoodic/map.htm Also, there are some very nice trails in the cottage neighborhood as well as hikes and lakes a short drive away: For Pigeon Hill, walk north (left) on the road from the cottage about 1/2 mile up the hill. There is an old small cemetery on the right, and a new parking area and trailhead on the left. Its only about a 20 minute hike to the top from there and well worth it--gorgeous views of Acadia, the Atlantic and islands! Hollingsworth Shore Loop Trail, drive (or bike or walk) to the wildlife refuge entrance about 1/2 mile down the road (right) from the cottage. Pass the main parking area and continue on the gravel road until you come to another parking area on the right. Trail is on the left. You could walk it in an hour if you hurried, but take your time instead and bring a lunch or snacks and stop at the sand beach and the cobblestone beach along the way. The field by the refuge entrance usually has good blueberry picking late July through August and there is also a longish trail there that goes through woods and blueberry fields all the way to the other side of the peninsula. This one can be a bit buggy so wear a hat and bring repellent. Check out the Maine Public Reserved Lands which are a half hour drive away. They are like an undiscovered park with lovely lakes and hiking trails. I would recommend the Black Mountain trails. Schoodic Lake is good for a swim afterwards! You can download a trail map here: http://tinyurl.com/8lzz9gr A peaceful spot you can walk to from the cottage--The Carrying Place Cove is a place where the peninsula is very narrow and a long cove comes in from the other side. At low tide it is empty of water, but on sunny days when the tide comes in over the flats, the water warms up to a quite swimmable temperature. It is also a nice spot for seeing eagles and sea birds and picking some blueberries. From the cottage, go right down the road for about 1/2 mile. Just before the point where the road turns sharply left and goes up a hill to the wildlife refuge, look for a grassy road/path on your right. It is between a grey cottage on the left, and another cottage up on a hill on the right. It could be mistaken for a driveway, but it is a public access. You can park (if you didn't walk there) on the side of the road past the curve and walk in to the cove. Jones Pond is a family friendly swimming spot with picnic tables and a changing room--about a 20 minute drive away. From the cottage, go back up to Route 1 and turn left. Continue out of Steuben and into Gouldsboro. Pass Rte 186 on your left and then watch for Rte 195 and turn left there. Go down the hill and look on your right for Recreation Rd. which ends at Jones Pond beach. Springriver Lake is really beautiful. About 1/2 hour away. From cottage, go back to Route 1 and turn right. Stay on Rte 1 through Milbridge heading towards Cherryfield (do not turn onto Route 1A.) In a few miles, turn left at stop sign onto Route 182 (Black Woods Road.) Go about 6 miles and then watch on your right for easy-to-miss turn off/public parking area in the woods. Park and take a one minute walk down to the lake. (If you come to the more obvious Tunk Lake public area on your left on 182, you have missed the Springriver Lake parking lot--but feel free to check out Tunk Lake too!) Donnell Pond. There is a nice sandy swimming beach with picnic tables--Schoodic Beach--on lovely Donnell Pond. This is best combined with a hike up Black Mountain. From Pigeon Hill Road, go left on Route 1 for 14.2 miles. Turn right onro Rte 183 north. Go about 4 miles until you cross over some railroad tracks. Take the first left after the tracks onto a gravel road (Schoodic Beach Road--but not sure if there is a sign.) Stay left at the first fork shortly after getting on this road. After that, follow the "main" road and do not take any left turns. The road ends in a parking area. Trail heads are here and it is a 1/2 mile walk in to the beach. I recommend downloading the Donnell Pond area trail maps if you'd like to explore this area: http://www.maine.gov/doc/parks/maps/donnellpond.pdf

Situated on the Petit Manan peninsula, the cottage is part of a small and peaceful community of summer and year-round homes. We love the openness of the area as not many of these cottages are surrounded by forest (which tends to be more typical in northern Maine). This gives us the advantage of knowing our neighbors, and giving and receiving a wave and a smile! Guest AccessThe entire cottage. Interaction with GuestsThe owners and the property manager are a phone call away. The NeighborhoodDown East Maine offers a tidbit of charm different from other areas on the coast. Abundant wildlife, eagles, heron, seal and puffin – wild blueberries in August and September -- amazing ocean hiking trails – island to island kayaking – antiquing -- and of course, those famous lobster rolls! All rolled into one very nice package of easy access and renowned Maine hospitality. With world-famous Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain just 50 minutes away, Pigeon Hill is the perfect jumping off point for all kinds of outdoor activities, whether they are exploring the back roads by car or foot, or the ocean by kayak. The hiking and biking trails at Schoodic Point, in Acadia National Park, are 12 miles away. In Jonesport there is hiking on Great Wass Island, and in Cutler, the Bold Coast trail. We're just down the road from trails in the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge; and our own Pigeon Hill, which at 317' is an easy-to-summit hill that has amazing panoramic views of the islands, including Cadillac Mountain on Mount Desert Island (pronounced by locals as “Dessert"!). And if you like to stargaze, at night the sky is totally black and those stars just pop -- Bring your spotter or binoculars! But of course, you don't have to be active on your vacation -- just sitting on the deck enjoying the peace and quiet, watching for the eagles, or perhaps merely enjoying a novel, goes a long way to emptying the mind of clutter and replenishing the spirit. What We Don't Have: Malls, Fast Food Restaurants, Traffic Jams. You can find those in Ellsworth, our nearest “big town". However, we do have a well-stocked supermarket about 10 minutes away in Milbridge, and there are some nice restaurants within 8 miles, so you don't have to drive to Ellsworth unless you're going through withdrawal for the hustle & bustle! Down East - The Way Life Should Be! Getting AroundSO close to local hiking trails, and those a few miles south and north along the coast. It is a wonderful area with so many places to explore! The bay is perfect for kayaks, and mountain bikes are useful if we want to go on a dirt road to the shore. It is ALL about the rocky coast! Other Things to NoteWithin walking distance to the Petit Manan Wildlife Area and hiking on Pigeon Hill.

The Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park, Petit Manaan Wildlife Refuge, Maine Public Lands, and conservancy lands are all close by and offer a wide variety of hiking, picnicking, and photo opportunities. Lobsters are delivered right to our dock or we may take you out to get your own from a lobster boat! Occasionally we offer rides down the Bay on our 25' sailboat. Whatever you choose to do from the wide array of activities listed in the cottage binder, you soon realize there are definitely more things to do than you'll have time for in a week's stay! Guest AccessYou have full access to the entire property, including the yards, 600 feet of shorefront, and owner's dock. Interaction with GuestsThe owner's home is located on the adjoining lot but is not visible from the cottage and we respect our guests' privacy. We are almost always available to our guests for answering questions, providing assistance and offering recommendations about local sites, activities, and establishments. We sometimes invite interested guests to join us for a ride on the Bay in our motorboat or 25' sailboat. The NeighborhoodThe cottage is in a very private setting, off a dead end road and right next to the water. In the summer, lobster boats in the Bay make more noise than the few cars on the road! Both the road and shoreline are great for walking. Many of our guests have enjoyed being out on the water while using the kayaks and canoe or on a ride with us in our motorboat or sailboat. The Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park is only 20 minutes away and is much less crowded than the main portion of the park on Mount Desert Island, which is an hour's drive away. Petite Manaan Wildlife Refuge, which offers wonderful hiking trails, a beach, bold oceanfront and vistas is also 20 minutes away in a neighboring community. Numerous trails on Maine Public Lands or conservancy lands are located within easy driving distance of the cottage. Many are highlighted in the large guest binder in the cottage. If you decide not to get your own lobsters off our dock and cook them yourself for dinner (we help with instructions) and want to eat out, we have a modest number but nice variety of dining possibilities in the area, which are also outlined in the guest binder. Getting AroundGuests either drive to the cottage in their own vehicle or rent one at the airport in Bangor, Portland, or Boston. A car is necessary to take full advantage of the many possibilities for sightseeing and hiking along the Downeast coast. We have two bikes (with helmets) that are available for renters to use at their own risk. There is a ferry nearby that goes to Bar Harbor and from there you can ride the free Island Explorer bus throughout Acadia National Park, getting off and on at numerous spots. Other Things to Note9% State of Maine lodging tax is included in the price. We rent the cottage Saturday to Saturday with check-in after 4:00 pm and check-out by 11:00 am. In special circumstances, primarily in the spring and fall seasons, a shorter stay may be considered if you contact the host.
