The SpaceWelcome to the Woods House at Ten Apple Farm! The house is both a Maine woods getaway and a farm retreat. Nestled in 17 acres of woods, just down the hill from our farmhouse, this charming Cape was where Margaret's dad retired to after 40 years as an English professor. The decor is part literary lair, part Wes Anderson, with many touches that reference Professor Hathaway's idiosyncratic taste. Set at the end of a 400-foot private drive, with a lawn that gives way to blackberry brambles and woods, The Woods House is quiet and private. Our second-growth woods are perfect for hiking and snow-shoeing, and are great for wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for Mr. Brown, our resident owl, and the family of deer who frequent the lawn at dusk. Guests are invited to visit the farm where we milk our herd of alpine dairy goats twice daily, make cheese, and keep chickens, turkeys, a large garden and small orchard. Let us know in advance if you'd like to schedule a goat hike! Find us on the web for more information about Ten Apple Farm. The house comfortably sleeps six in 3 bedrooms. There are 2 double beds and a trundle bed that can be configured to one or two single beds. There is a futon in the living room that can sleep two more, and for very large groups a second futon mattress that can be put on the floor in the master bedroom could sleep 2 more. Guest AccessThe house is completely private, and you will have total access. The well equipped kitchen includes Kitchen Aid mixer, heavy-bottomed cook's pans, and assorted gadgetry. Feel free to poke around the cabinets and use what you find. The kitchen is stocked with spices, coffee and tea, and some staples. Apologies for the electric stove—it’s on our list of future improvements. All guests are welcomed with fresh goat milk and cheese from the farm, as well as eggs from our chickens. There's almost always preserves from the farm, and really lucky guests, who time their arrival to a baking day, might get treated to Margaret's delicious homemade scones or other baked delights. Feel free to peruse the extensive library (heavily weighted toward masculine literary classics, many annotated by Professor Hathaway). Copies of our books about goats and the Maine food scene are available for sale -- check them out on our website, or the house coffee table. In addition to the library, there is a collection of DVDs, old vinyl records, board games and puzzles. There is wifi. There is access to a washer and dryer for those guests staying more than a few days. The house is not baby-proofed, but we do have many amenities for families with small children, such as a pack-and-play, a booster high chair, potty seat, and ergo carrier. We also have baby gates and a wrought iron fence that can be installed around the wood stove--just let us know in advance. If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to ask! Interaction with GuestsThe farm where we live with our family is adjacent, but separate. Guests at the Woods House are invited and encouraged to come up and visit the farm (just walk through the woods and into our small apple orchard), meet our goats and chickens and other seasonal animals. We love to share the farm, our animals and lifestyle with guests and new friends! Almost everyone who comes to visit learns how to milk a goat before they leave (though not required!), and we're always happy to take you for a hike in the woods with our goats. We are around if you need anything, but not present in the house with you. Getting AroundLocated only 2.5 miles from Exit 63 on the Maine turnpike you will have easy access to getting around Southern Maine and the rest of the state. There is parking at the house for 2-3 cars.

The SpaceCompleted in 2013 with LEED-Platinum construction standards in mind, this new home (we call it “The Lodge”) is built on the same spot where our extended family’s first Little Sebago “camp” used to sit. It was hard for some of us to see it go, but the design of the new Lodge was based on many years of vacationing together in this exact location, and our whole family thinks it’s great! The entire property has beautiful landscaping and mature trees. The waterside of the property has an outside granite stairway with a stainless handrail that winds down from the main floor’s screened porch to a terrace where there is another entrance, directly into the lower-level hallway. The stairway then goes a few more steps down to a partially-shaded grassy area - an ideal spot to spend time near the water, lounging or lake-watching. Nearby is a large waters-edge deck, an extra-large dock, and a storage shed for your beach stuff. But the main outside attraction, for many, is the great private beach, with nice natural sand and a shallow descent into Little Sebago’s great water. A float completes the waterfront, and the swimming is excellent in both directions. The heart of the Lodge is the great room, which features a modern kitchen that can handle a crowd with ease, a large island with 6 bar chairs, a 12-person dining table, a round table for games and puzzles that seats 6, plenty of comfy furniture for lounging, and big windows for light, views, and breezes. There are beautiful wood floors and finishes throughout. The Lodge’s bedrooms come in two basic types, “large” and “flexible”. There are 2 “large” bedrooms. The large bedroom on the main level is wheelchair accessible and has great sound insulation from the the rest of the house, so it can be good for folks who don’t want to deal with stairs or who may want to go to bed earlier than others. It has a two extra-long twin beds that can be cinched together to make a king bed, great storage, and a compartmentalized full bath (3 lavs) that can be made either private or accessible from the great room. The other large bedroom, on the upper level, is actually a “suite” that occupies that entire floor. It has the same twin/king bed set-up, great storage, and its own full bath. And it also has a “nook” room with two regular-length twin mattresses on the floor for children, if needed. The four “flexible” bedrooms are on the lower level, which has a center hallway and a pair of these rooms on each side. These four bedrooms are the same size, and each has its own door, 2 extra-long twin beds (that can also be cinched together to make a king bed), 2 night stands on rollers, and 2 wardrobe closets on rollers. The wardrobe closets that sit between each pair of rooms create a moveable wall that provides a good visual barrier (but not as much sound privacy as a real wall). For each pair of lower level bedrooms, this makes it possible to put 2 extra-long twin beds in each bedroom, or 3 extra-long twin beds in one bedroom and 1 in the other if you prefer. And any two twins can be made into a king. Also on the lower level are two compartmentalized full bathrooms. One full bath has one room with a stacked full-size laundry set and countertop lav, which leads to another room with a toilet or a third room with a shower. The other full bath on the lower level has one room with 3 countertop lavs, which leads to another room with a toilet or a third room with a tub/shower. The top part of the driveway is paved and is fine for parking, but it also has a heavy-duty adjustable basketball hoop and court (balls are provided). From there, the driveway slopes down toward the Lodge where there are 3-4 parking spaces close to the main entrance. (There are also two 'roadside' parking spaces.) The waterside of the Lodge faces west, and it sits on the southeast edge of Little Sebago Lake’s large central basin and across from Spider Island. All that said, many of us think the best part of this house is not really in the house or completely outside - it’s the screened porch. This porch features a vaulted ceiling, ceiling fan, stone fireplace, and screen “walls” on three sides that roll up or down, from floor into ceiling, at the touch of a button. It is often enjoyed all day and well into the evening for outside dining, fireside chatting or singing, and s’mores! Guest AccessThe place is yours! Interaction with GuestsThis property is now jointly owned by four branches of our family; "son" John is now doing most of the rental management. Family members have owned the property since 1997, but in 2012 the old "camp" was torn down and replaced by a new, energy-efficient home under the great leadership of eldest sister, Tammie. We hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we do! John is lives about 45 minutes from the property, and his happy to help out! thanks, The Extended Newlin Clan The NeighborhoodBeach, Swimming, Fishing on site.
