The SpaceIf you have ever visited the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, you know what we are talking about! Beauty at every turn; lovely four seasons. This is a smoke-free rustic log cabin located on the quaint Upper Pig Pen Road in small-town Green Mountain. We've done some remodeling this year! We have installed new flooring, have a new queen mattress in the master bedroom as well as a new mattress on the additional bedroom off of the basement, a side by side refrigerator, fresh paint inside and out, remodeled bath in the basement, new metal roof! The cabin has a queen bed in the lovely guest bedroom and a loft bedroom with two double beds. There is a unheated basement' bedroom that has just been refurbished with a queen bed as well. There's a full kitchen and a full bath upstairs and a full refurbished bath downstairs. The cabin is about 40 minutes from the great city of Asheville, NC. It is only 6 miles from the lovely town of Burnsville. There you will find a pharmacy, quaint downtown area, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores, hospital, and movie theater. There is no public transit system, but getting around is easy. We are less than a mile from the North Toe River where the kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, and swimming are great! If you are looking a quiet place with easy access to Asheville, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Hot Springs, Roan Mountain, Grandfather Mountain, Mt. Mitchell, Linville Falls, Linville Caverns, Boone, Blowing Rock, Newland, Little Switzerland, Celo, the Black Mountain range, Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain, the Smokie Mountains, and points in between, this a good spot. Most of these are within an hour to two hours proximity. Come ski in the winter and go white-water rafting in the spring and summer! This is a leaf-looker's delight in the fall! My friends tell me that I am blessed with the gift of hospitality. I invite you to our cabin! Guest AccessThe outstanding 60th Annual Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair in Burnsville is the first weekend in August. The North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival of Spruce Pine is also the first weekend in August. The Eleventh Annual Carolina Literary Festival in Burnsville is in September. The cabin provides access to fishing, kayaking, bicycling, hiking, swimming, and many hikes and sites. Interaction with GuestsPlease note that we tend to leave guests alone. That is not because we are not friendly or interested, but many people choose our place because they want to get away for awhile. If you want me to meet you, please let me know. Otherwise, I leave the key and you alone! The NeighborhoodSo quiet you will not believe it! You, the very distant train, the babbling creek across the road, and the peepers, cows, owls, foxes, and coyotes at night in the summer are about all you'll hear! We value the lack of light and noise in our little 'neighborhood' of Upper Pig Pen. Getting AroundYou will need a car. Green Mountain is six miles from Burnsville, NC. Other Things to NoteThe basement has been remodeled this year. While it is clean and the bedroom and bath are quite nice, they are located in the basement. The bedroom has new windows, a separate entrance, a new queen mattress, and fresh paint and flooring. We urge you to use the laundry facilities only if emergency since the use of the water and electricity for the washer and dryer is not are included in the price of the cabin. Please respect this.

The SpaceThis 6 room Appalachian mountain home will give you a rare glimpse into the actual life of a family of 6 who built this house and lived in it for over 85 years. They grew most all they ate, farming with only a horse; the father also traded horses and grew tobacco for a little cash. They only used wood for all their cooking or heating. This roomy, tho simple, 900 sq ft house is right near CX RR tracks, with the Toe River steps beyond. To Lee Byrd's former home, I have added all the modern amenities one expects to be comfortable: fans in most every room, a fully equipped new kitchen and one new big bathroom with a rain shower. No tub. New electric service and plumbing throughout... We discovered the original walls and floors and meticulously restored them all. Both bedrooms only have double beds. Most furnishings are original to the period and this house, lovingly restored. One or two nights and up to four guests cost the same. Guest AccessI AM TAKING RESERVATIONS for a 2 night min. stay, starting APRIL 2016, and invite your early inquiries. You will have acces to 150 totally hike able acres; the beautiful big Toe River is in front; go tubing or just wading or fishing. Walk west along the RR tracks, a moderately active CSX route, formerly owned by The Clinchfield RR... for less than 1 mile to a small tunnel-dare to go thru it, (there is room to avoid an incoming train) and then walk across the Toe River on an old swinging bridge for super photo ops. There is a huge barn to explore above my farmhouse; Come up for breakfast if you don't want to cook. Nearby is the Appalachian Trail, Penland School of Crafts, hundreds of artists and craftsmen's homes and studios; Grandfather Mtn and Blue Ridge Parkway access close by too. Children and most pets welcome. You can bring air mattresses or a child’s small bed. No extra charge for children under 5. Park right at the door. AVL (NC) and TRI- cities (TN) airports are both about 1 hr away by car. Wi-Fi, internet, TV, washer & dryer avail in the 1906 Farmhouse up the drive, on request. You can bring your own grill for use outside. . Interaction with GuestsI love meeting new folks and am delighted to sit on the porch and visit here in the 1906 Farmhouse or down the drive to Lee Byrd's cottage. I am comfortable with all nationalities and understand "broken English" with ease. I have summered here over 43 years and know the area and the locals and can direct you to find all sorts of adventures and beauty spots for photo ops in addition to those right here on my 150 acres and 1/2 mile riverfront.. The NeighborhoodIt is NOT a neighborhood. This is a hamlet called "Red Hill" right on the Mitchell-Yancy county line. My nearest permanent neighbor is 1/2 mile away. I am 73, live alone with 2 cats, and have spent most every summer here since 1973 with no adverse incidents that I didn't cause myself!. In spite of being a "summer person", I have been accepted into this local mountain community. Always ready to share my experiences living and raising two childen, during summers and school vacations, in this remote and formerly geographically isolated mountain area ----as you wish.. Getting AroundNO public transportion. Must have a car with enough power to climb steep hills. 4 WD is NOT necessary. Fly into to Tri-Cities, TN or Ashville, NC airports. Car rentals avail at both. Both are about 1 hr away. Roads from either are safe and easy, tho some are curvy and hilly. Other Things to NoteThis is THE perfect place to be if you are a railroad buff and/or want to enjoy unspoiled nature in all its majesty . This is was a busy track, now only a few daily trains....First week in July, usually tracks are under repair. Star gazing behind the barn is amazing...also fireflies, hummingbirds , and many other critters... Since everything is newly refurbished, redone or new, it is a great time to visit . Remember: A TWO NIGHT MIN. CHARGE, for 2 - 4 persons. There is a $35 cleaning fee for 2 guests and $45 for 4 guests.

Very comfortable beds include a King and twin sofa bed in the master bedroom and 2 twins in the other bedroom. Perfect for a family or friends traveling together. Second bedroom also has twin sofa bed chair that is good for small child. Total beds can sleep 6. The home also has a mother-in-law style apartment that is listed separately. There is an onsite caretaker that occupies a bedroom in the basement. Guest AccessGuests may use the kitchen/living downstairs in main house. Guests have their own full size refrigerator to use in the kitchen. The kitchen is fully stocked and includes a Keurig coffee maker. The living room has amazing views of the mountains, comfortable furniture, and a smart TV but there is no cable TV, you can watch movies over the internet via Netflix or Amazon. Interaction with GuestsThe caretaker on the farm is John and he will be there to greet you and show you around. We may come and go as needed, but we live about 45 min away. The NeighborhoodThe farm is fairly remote, in a rural area in the Appalachian Mountains. Although it is only 13 miles from Burnsville and 35 miles from Asheville, the trip seems longer because of the curvy mountain roads. Driving anywhere in the mountains is breathtaking as you pass old farmhouses and barns, clear mountain rivers, and green trees, mountain flowers, and wildlife. Our farm is at the end of a private road shared by only 5 other property owners and no other homes can be seen from the farm. The Smokey Mountain National Park, Cherokee, NC are west and south of Asheville, so about 2 hours away from the farm. Boone NC, Grandfather Mountain, and the ski slopes in that area are also about 2 hours from the farm. There is a great ski lodge at Wolf Mountain that less than a hour drive from the farm. Visiting Mount Mitchell makes a nice day trip and is about 1.5 hours from the farm. You can see Mount Mitchell in the view from the farm. You may hike on the logging trails around the property but be sure not to approach another house if you come near to one. Be aware of the trail you have chosen and look for landmarks so that you can find your way back the way you came. If you are hiking with children or pets, be sure to keep them nearby. Sound can be muffled in the woods - meaning they can be just around a bend in the trail and not be able to hear you. Getting AroundABOUT THE DRIVEWAY: Please be aware that the driveway to the farm is gravel and steep in some places. AWD or 4WD vehicles are necessary and tire chains may be necessary in winter months if there is snow. The road is maintained and in good condition but can be intimidating if you are unaccustomed to mountain terrain. That said, the trip up the road is well worth it because the farm is beautiful. Please drive SLOWLY on the driveway. If you come upon a car traveling in the opposite direction it is customary for one car to pull onto the side in the closest space possible and let the other pass. Be aware of the pull over spaces as you travel up and down the driveway. Passing another car is rare, but it does happen. There also may be pets or pedestrians in the road so driving carefully is much appreciated. Other Things to NoteWe recommend that you shop for groceries before arriving at the farm since the drive into Burnsville takes approximately 25 min. You may not want to leave once you arrive. We also request that you bring shoes to wear indoors and leave shoes worn outdoors at the front door to keep the floors and carpets cleaner. House was built in the early 70's with passive solar design. It faces south, so the sun warms the house during the day. The living room has a large fireplace and also a large kerosene heater. The heat flows up the stairwell, to warm the entire house. There are also space heaters available for use in the bedrooms and bathrooms if needed. Cell phone service is very weak in the mountains. We do have a Verizon network extender in the house so if you have Verizon service your phone will work. Otherwise you may get weak signal up the hill behind the house. There is a land line in the house that you may use for local and long distance calls within the US.
