Beautiful hikes and cycling trails abound, and of course one can take a canoe up the Great Brak river which flows through the town. The other part is a unique Island, surrounded by the river, which flows to the sea on the south side. This island has been around for many years and has a colourful history going back to the 1800's. My grandmother had one of the first houses there - but in the old days they used to arrive by ox wagon and traverse the river by boat. Today the island is accessed by a very unique narrow little bridge, scary for some, but will just accommodate a car! - and has some permanent residents, but mostly holiday homes ( approximately 78 in all) The Island has a traditional charm, and is a free and safe environment, with the luxury of the river and the sea on your doorstep. See (website: hidden) for more attractions and activities. Every moment can be packed with a variety of activities, but you can also just chill out on the verandah and take in the river view, backed by a large hill covered in indigenous bushland and hosting many beautiful birds, and enjoy the peace while your barbeque fire is burning on the river edge. South Africa Garden Route. Walking distance to the sea and uninterrupted river frontage. Casual and relaxed. Pure outdoor beauty. Many opportunities for wildlife viewing, walking, hiking, cycling and swimming on your doorstep

The SpaceLocated on a working cattle farm, you'll immediately feel yourself relaxing into the slow and steady pace of farm life. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the entire house, bedroom, bathroom, lounge and kitchen. There's also a grassy area around the house, perfect for kids to play around on. Interaction with GuestsWe stay right next door. If we're home, we'll be able to assist you wherever needed. The NeighborhoodWe're surrounded by dairy and cattle farms, with the odd vegetable farmer here and there. The area if hilly with beautiful valleys in between. The surrounding farmers have not been able to plough everywhere, due to the hilly terrain, and there are plenty forested areas that have been left in tact. There's a rural settlement nearby, Friemersheim, which is a small farming community with an old church and a few small and very basic shops. The area is know as the Garden Route because of it's rainfall all year round, so there's no dry season and it's always green, hence the name 'Garden' Route. Getting AroundPublic transport is basically non-existent, the only option for getting here is driving yourself. Once you're here you can walk around to explore the area, it's perfectly safe. It's also ideal for cycling, with spectacular routes via gravel roads! But the area is hilly, so inexperienced / unfit cyclists will likely not make it very far. The nearest town, Groot Brak Rivier, is 15km away, so walking there for food or groceries isn't really an option. Groot Brak Rivier is easy to reach by car, it sits right next to the N2 highway, which makes getting up and down South Africa's southern and eastern coastlines very easy. From Groot Brak Rivier to where we are the road is tarred halfway while the rest of the road is gravel. The condition of the gravel road is relatively good and it is serviced fairly often. We've never had any problems driving around with a normal passenger car. Other Things to NoteDrinking water is provided from our own rain water tank. We've been drinking the water for years without ever having problems. It's crystal clear, pure rain water. Chemically untreated. If you're unsure about drinking untreated rain water, please bring your own drinking water. The shower, toilet and sink is provided with water from the a nearby mountain stream and / or dam. The water is perfectly clean and safe for showering and washing. We even use it for brushing teeth. But it is also untreated and therefore reflects the reddish brown colour of the area's soil.

With its mild year-round climate, Great Brak River is a mere hour’s drive from SA’s ostrich capital, Oudtshoorn and the world-renowned Cango Caves. Sweeping panoramic views complement the outstanding characteristics of this jewel of the Southern Cape. This is a little gem of a town situated at the confluence of the Great Brak River and the Indian Ocean on the Garden Route of the Southern Cape. Absorb the scenic beauty of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, and the azure blue sea with rolling green hills and pastures, rich agriculture and culture. River bush and fynbos, aloe and dolphin, whale, suikerbekkie and man live side by side in a place one can only describe as Paradise. The community is alive with cultural activities, musical events and art in all its forms. It’s a tourist’s paradise with plenty of sporting and leisure activities, just waiting to be fully discovered. Throughout the tranquil scenic area, there are plenty of picnic places, both secluded and areas where facilities are provided. Those areas not providing facilities, fires are not to be made. Places such as Pine Creek Holiday Resort have facilities directly on the rivers of Great Brak and Little Brak and also provide canoes for a fun filled day at a reasonable price. The beautiful, clean and unspoiled beaches in the area, and the lagoon, offer safe swimming – with lifesavers present during the December and January holidays. All beaches throughout the Garden Route are blessed with the presence of the Southern Right Whales, dolphins and seals. From July through to November you can quietly sit and admire these magnificent mammals. Rheebok and Tergniet beaches both have tidal pools whilst the rest have no serious rocks, all are swimming beaches. With day packages available, the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, (hosting four (4) of the Big Five for people to see), offers game drives, guided bush trails, horseback safari’s and outrides with an abundance of flora and Fauna to see, for the avid nature lover. The river that divides the village is rich in marine life while its wooded banks offer excellent opportunities for bird watching. There is an Art route, several Cycling and Hiking trails (near the Wolwedans Dam and Glentana), exhilarating mountain bike trails, the Fragrance route (lavender planted in local gardens) and a Historic route. Follow the circular route through the village and experience the quaint village which is rich in history and tradition Take a pleasant drive to close by Knysna and Plettenberg Bay and experience the Birds of Eden and Monkeyland just outside Plett at the Craggs. For the avid shopping enthusiast Mossel Bay Mall, Langeberg Mall and Bayside Centre will take care of all your shopping needs. There are also a variety of smaller home goods stores as well as market stalls and boutiques to pique your interest. Getting AroundOwn Transportation is essential to get around the little town and the surrounding areas. Although George Municipality has just recently implemented a bus service which is operational in the biggest parts of town and you can even travel to the Garden Route Mall by bus - it is not operational everywhere at the moment. Please look out for the GO GEORGE buses. Other Things to NoteOwn car essential. George Airport a mere 10km away. The SpaceOur cottage is called "Luilekker" -- an Afrikaans expression that is comprised of two words: "lui" (lazy) and "lekker" (we won't tell you what this means, but it's a word you HAVE to learn before coming to South Africa! :) The cottage does not have much of an ocean view, but don't let that fool you. It is located about a minute's walk from the large, particularly quiet and spectacular, misty beach. You will fall asleep listening to the ocean and wake up with the same peaceful sound. Glentana main beach is only a 5 minute drive if you prefer some company while swimming - or you can simply walk along the Outeniquastrand beach for about 20 minutes. The cottage is private and very well equipped with all the kitchen bits that you will need. Erina and Ken (both keen travellers) are there to assist with any queries about the area. They also have special recommendations on what to see and where to go in the surrounds. Guest AccessWhen you book Luilekker you get ALL of Luilekker! The cottage is entirely yours for the time that you need. The back garden is to be shared with Erina and Ken, but they are a quiet, respectful couple (and they are working most of the time) and will be more than happy to let you use this space to enjoy the salt water splash pool and the braai (another word for you to learn before you come!) facilities. Interaction with GuestsGuests are welcome to interact as much or as little with Erina and Ken as they want. Both hosts are very knowledgeable about the area and many other parts of South Africa and they would be happy to share advice and experiences! The NeighborhoodThe neighbourhood is quiet for most of the year (February - November) as it is mainly comprised of holiday homes - there are very few permanent residents. Outeniquastrand therefore has the feel of a romantic, isolated, misty beach-dorp but Great Brak is only about 7km away where you can do all your grocery shopping and have a nice coffee. Getting AroundGuest are advised not to rely on public transport in this area. It's best to rent a car to get around. Cars can be rented from George Airport or from Mossel Bay.
