The SpaceHello! Welcome to Jefferson Chalmers! I have done much traveling, and I know the importance of having a friendly, clean, and safe refuge when traveling in unknown territory. Jefferson Chalmers is the neighborhood that I grew up in, and I have been working on homes here to preserve the community. This home is one of them. It is very large, and had been converted to an open floor plan, so it is perfect for hosting many people. There are five bedrooms shared with longterm roommates and airbnb guests. The home is always full of interesting and friendly people. There are 2 full baths, one with a tub, and one with a shower. A full and open kitchen is available for cooking and storing food. This house was built in the 20s, but has had some major renovation done to the interior. Given the increasing interest in Jefferson Chalmers, and given my need to fund my preservation projects in the community, I decided to make this space available to travelers looking for a quality, laid back living space, for a reasonable price. This provides a place for you, brings awareness to the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood, and funds improvements on the Marlborough block! Guest AccessThe house is fully furnished, and you can make yourself at home here. There is speedy wifi, a lot of space for working or relaxing in communal areas, and a washer and dryer. The neighborhood is filled with beautiful old homes, and a number of parks along the river. There are also canals that run through the neighborhood, and a couple of small single block islands with homes on them! Jefferson Chalmers is working to bring back its shopping district, but there are grocers and restaurants nearby. We can help you find anything you may be looking for. The Grosse Pointes are also situated on the edge of the neighborhood, providing upscale options for shopping if needed. Interaction with GuestsI don't live in this house but I am easy to contact for anything you might need. And guests often find that the roommates in the house are great resources for recommendations. Also, I will send a full list of suggestions for restaurants, grocers, and things to do once your booking is complete. The NeighborhoodThe housing consists of bungalows and Arts and Crafts houses built in the early 20th Century that have maintained their character and beauty. Most blocks have many owner occupied houses and mowed lawns. The neighborhood is on the Detroit River and is bordered by beautiful river side parks, canals, and residential islands accessible by bridge. The Jefferson-Chalmers Business District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 and is one of a few early twentieth-century neighborhood commercial districts that still survive in Detroit. During the 1920s, this district along Jefferson was the center of the east-side neighborhood's commercial, social, and cultural life. The district is unique in that two big-band era ballrooms, the cultural fulcrums of the early 20th century social scene, still exist within the district: the Monticello and the Vanity Ballroom.

The SpaceThe Duck 'N' Roll Inn has been a home to journalists, documentary filmmakers, artists, performers, urban planners and explorers, and this year, a temporary home for families reuniting. It's been a joy to teach the kids about the ducks! The "Duck 'N' Roll Inn" is an eclectic farmhouse on an urban duck farm, officially known as Laid In Detroit. The farm provides pasture raised duck eggs to the Woodbridge Pub, as well as local residents. Located in the easy-going east side, Laid In Detroit was voted "Best Inner City Duck Farm" by the staff of the Metro Times. Though it's not so much an "inner city" vibe as it is a laid back oasis amongst urban sprawl. It encompasses 4 city lots full of trees and garden, with a 3 lot community garden just across the street. The house has 3 bedrooms--a nautical room, and kid friendly room, and a spacious bedroom known as "the disco room," which features a large skylight, a woodburning stove, enormous chalk boards, and a sound system with a disco ball so that it doubles as a dance floor! There is one full bath with an extra wide jacuzzi tub, as well as a half bath on the first floor. The property also features a steel bbq in the form of a dinosaur, an adobe pizza oven on site, as well as panoramic views of the gardens and the ducks frolicking in the pasture. We have a new addition to the farm! Meg, the livestock guardian dog is keeping us safe from predators and prowlers, along with Sox the cat. Great Pyrenees guardian dogs are known for their friendly, gentle demeanor, as well as their superior livestock guarding abilities. She is still a puppy, but already a doing a great job with both ducks and people alike. When you meet her, give her a biscuit and a pat. She loves guests! (By the way, dogs and cats are off limits to the house unless invited! No worries if you are allergic or not an animal lover.) The house is full of character with a large kitchen and dining area. The property also has many ecological features, such as a green roof over the duck coop and permaculture gardens. Your stay here will not only be relaxing and fun, but educational as well. Typical guests who have really enjoyed the Duck 'N' Roll Inn are artists, urban gardening fans, photographers, journalists, film makers, animal lovers, students, musicians, world travelers and anyone with an adventurous mindset. You can also rest easy knowing that the money from your reservation is going directly to a small farm business in a developing neighborhood in Detroit. Cornerstone Village, once a stable working class neighborhood founded by Belgian immigrants (some refer to it as "the Belgian triangle") has also been affected by the recent mass exodus from Detroit. But a strong coalition of homeowners with deep roots in the community have held things together. You will encounter some blight and vacant homes in the neighborhood. There are characters, and oftentimes people are out and about, playing music and socializing, but it is a friendly neighborhood, All guests have had a safe experience here. There are many great restaurants nearby, as well as bars, pubs, and grocery stores. The Cadieux Cafe and Ye Olde Tap Room have been around for a century. Trader Joe's and Kroger grocery are within walking distance. Laid In Detroit has hosts many events, including an annual Easter party for the kids, and a Christmas party for the adults! Interaction with GuestsI live right next door to the inn, and I am often home most of the day. Should you need anything, even a light bulb changed, I can get to it quickly. In the past, guests have a had special requests, everything from tours of the city, to barbeques and small weddings. If you give me enough notice, I am happy to clear my calendar so that we can make the best of your stay here in Detroit! Getting AroundDetroit is not known for its convenient public transit (not yet, anyway). We recommend renting a car. In the end, it's cheaper and more convenient than a cab, and a good way to get to and from the airport. Detroit does have a growing web of bike paths, however, and it can be a great way to see the city. I have four bikes available for guests to use, and, if given enough notice, I will be even take you on a tour!

Are you visiting the Windsor–Detroit area for business or pleasure and want to escape to a quiet retreat? This is your home away from home. Located on our private property, this was a 2.5 car, 1 3/4 story secondary garage that we have renovated. It is located about 3/4 of the way down our driveway between the road and our home. All the amenities of home are yours; full kitchen, propane BBQ, air TV, DVD player, bathroom with shower, washer/dryer, air conditioning and a king-sized bed with a pillow-top mattress. All of this AND a beautiful view of Lake St. Clair. In the summer, feel free to use the volleyball court or the horse shoe pit but remember that this property is a private area, shared with us and our neighbours, so loud partying is not appropriate. This property is most comfortable for two adults however, a third (over 10 years of age) person can be accommodated (in a single futon). While we love animals and have a very friendly Labradoodle (Milo) as well as an Irish Wolfhound (Otis) of our own, we respect our guests with allergies to animals and for this reason, animals are not allowed inside The Villa. Shopping, restaurants and a movie theatre are just an 4-minute drive away. You will need a car or taxi to get around, especially if you are going into Windsor. The public transit is about 2.5km away. Security deposit will not be returned if additional cleaning is required, if smoking is detected in the unit, or if keys are not returned. **RATES***We set our rates based upon the area, the season, the amenities, the utilities used, and the cleaning time/charges we incur. We do not overcharge and feel our prices are reasonable. We are set on not "gouging" our guest and ask that you respect our rate policy. We are not a large hotel and can not make up for money lost on one guest because another overpays. Please do not ask us to reduce our rates, cut you some slack, or take cash. All payments must be made through the website that you are booking through and the rates posted are non negotiable. This is not only for our security but for yours. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to sit by the water on our breakwall, enjoy the fire pit (when the wind is off shore only), or go into the lake to swim/cool off. Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to answer any questions you might have and will greet you when outdoors in our common area and may even invite you to play volley ball with our group if we get a game going but we certainly respect everyone's privacy. The NeighborhoodOur neighbourhood is quiet, mainly occupied professionals who enjoy the serenity of the water, the slower pace of suburban living, and their privacy. Getting Aroundpublic transit is about 2.5km away so having a car or hiring a cab is much more convenient, in fact pretty much a necessity. "Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) is a historic river-front neighborhood located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms. A RICH HISTORY: THE BIRTH OF THE AUTOMOBILE & PROHIBITION Built in 1923, this home is part of an exciting history that we hope you will learn more about. Local history highlights include: * During the “roaring 1920s” prohibition swept the country and alcohol was banned. The Fox Creek, located just behind the house, became a major channel for smuggling illegal booze from Canada. Legend has it this house was used as a speakeasy (secret bar) where people gathered for a drink. * In 1905: Henry Ford raced through this neighborhood and proved his ability as an automotive pioneer which helped him get financing and launch the Ford motor company. The automotive industry was literally born here! Our home is located along the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are just across the street from the water and you can throw a rock & hit the nearest canal from our backyard (but please don't do that haha). We are also within 1-2 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park. FAST FORWARD TO TODAY Since 2015, we’ve worked on this home continuously and we are excited to share it with you and fellow travelers. In a way, our home is just like the city of Detroit – it had a glorious past and went through some very tough times, but if you dig through the surface, it’s not hard to find its beauty. This charming home, like many others in Detroit, was abandoned and abused, and just needed to be re-discovered, re-invented and brought back to life… WHAT BROUGHT US HERE After driving through Detroit in 2013 we fell in love with the city and its people so we decided to move here. Since 2013 we have been busy saving old houses, removing them from the "demo list" and helping to bring them back to life. We scouted literally every neighborhood in Detroit when we first arrived and we chose this particular neighborhood (Jefferson Chalmers) because of its rich history, great neighbors, and its outstanding natural resources. This neighborhood is not the closest to downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car) but our convenient river access, proximity to nearby parks, and overall friendly and safe vibe makes this our favorite neighborhood in Detroit and we hope you will like it here too! HELP US CONTINUE RESTORATION WORK All proceeds from AirBNB help us fund our continuing restoration work so each guest brings us one step closer to saving these awesome historic homes. WE'RE HERE TO HELP We hope our place serves as a great base for your Detroit adventures and we hope you enjoy your stay. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience here even better! Getting AroundAlthough bus service is available, we recommend driving a car during your stay in Detroit. Biking is also a good way to move around the city and we can arrange bikes for you to use during your stay if you'd like. Other Things to NoteNo smoking inside the home. Please clean up after yourself. Have fun & be respectful of others :-)

Getting AroundThere is plenty of street parking in front of the house. And for public transit the house is a block and a half from the 25 Jefferson bus line which runs frequently and will take you downtown. There are also the 9 Chalmers and the 13 Connor routes within very close walking distance.

Local history highlights include: * During the “roaring 1920s" prohibition swept the country and alcohol was banned. We are conveniently located only 5.5 miles to downtown (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike). Off-street parking is available in the driveway. Guests will also have access to a washer / dryer in our other house located on the same block. OUR CONTINUING RENOVATION WORK We have recently brought this house online and still have some occasional renovation work to complete. The NeighborhoodLOCATION: The home is conveniently located 5.5 miles east of downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike). "Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) is a historic river-front neighborhood located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms. WHY IS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IMPORTANT? It was literally the birthplace of the automotive industry and marked the changeover from an agrarian horse-driven society to the modern industrial based urban world. In the late 1800s and early 1900s this neighborhood was home to 3 of the region's most famous horse racing tracks. In 1901 the Detroit Driving Club held the first automobile race which featured the young Henry Ford who was the only man willing to race against the formidable Alexander Winton (a leading auto manufacturer). After a spectacular upset, Henry Ford won the race and with this demonstration, seeded the founding of the modern Ford Motor Company. Between the years 1911 and 1919, Chalmers motorcars operated the world's first automotive test track here. Chalmers Street (named after the company) and East Jefferson Avenue intersect, and as such the neighborhood became known as "Jefferson Chalmers". Our home is located along the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are less than 1 block from the famous canals that once served as "bootleggers alley" during prohibition where rum and other illegal substances were quietly smuggled in from Canadian suppliers right across the river. We are also within 1-2 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park. Nearby you will find world-class fishing (musky), boat launch facilities, and many nice neighbors. Interaction with GuestsI live right next door if you have any questions, concerns, or emergencies! The NeighborhoodI'm not going to lie, since the housing crash, many people left this neighborhood, so there is blight, empty houses, and empty lots where houses used to be. But the good news is, it is considered one of the more stable neighborhoods in the city. In the entire three years I have been renting on airbnb, over 100 rentals per year, we have not experienced a single crime incident. We are also located blocks from Grosse Pointe, one of the safest suburbs in the area, where there is shopping, groceries, coffee shops, restaurants, and most other amenities.

The SpaceGreetings from the motor city capital of the world, and welcome to Mama’s Place! As dedicated and seasoned travelers we understand the need for a perfect “home-away-from home.” Safety, cleanliness, and comfort are our top three priorities here at Mama’s Place and we are always striving to improve your travelling experience. This century-old home is large, spacious, and cozy; the perfect setting for hosting guests. Mama’s Place offers two floors of guest access. The first floor boasts a full kitchen, dining area, and common area. The kitchen includes a microwave, stove, and refrigerator lightly stocked with breakfast fixings and snacks for the duration of your stay. Cable television is available in the common area and Blast! speed internet wifi is available throughout the house. Office space is also located on the lower level, ideal for quiet study or a place to jot down a quick note or two. The second floor has three bedrooms: two single rooms, and one double with an adjoining private sunroom. There is also a full bathroom (tub+shower) located on this floor as well. All rooms are equipped with sound docks, alarm stations, and charging ports for your convenience. Fresh linens and towels are always a mainstay here, although we also provide guests access to hair dryers, flat irons, (and ear plugs) if you need them ;-) There is free parking on the premises but for those of you who are in need of public transit Mama’s Place is only a half block from the 25 Jefferson/610 Jefferson bus lines which run frequently and can get you downtown in no time at all. Downtown Detroit has a variety of things to offer from the university/cultural districts, entertainment/shopping districts, as well as the internationally-acclaimed Detroit Medical Center (DMC). The 9 Chalmers and the 13 Conner routes are also nearby if you are looking to explore places outside of downtown. If taking the bus isn't your thing we highly suggest you use Uber. The app is free to download on smartphones and they offer extremely reasonable prices for luxurious driving accommodations. Jefferson Chalmers itself is working diligently to restore its main shopping district, but there are grocers and restaurants nearby. The Grosse Pointe communities are also close for those in search of upscale shopping and dining options, and the Mama’s Place staff is also available to help point you in the right direction. Mama’s Place is a labor of love shared by a mother-daughter duo wanting to bring greater awareness and longevity to the city we have known and loved our entire lives. We both grew up in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood and have experienced nothing but warm smiles, friendly people, and great memories. Given our attachment to the neighborhood we wanted to create a space that allowed us to show some fine city hospitality to weary travelers, while also allowing us to continue to strengthen revitalization efforts within the community. We are situated next door to Hope House, a wonderful non-profit, offering housing to students and occasional travelers. They host weekly events in their home for the surrounding community and would love to have you pop by for a visit. Our community is quiet, close-knit, vibrant, and will offer you a truly authentic Detroit experience. Treat yourself to a leisurely walk along our red cobbled street and enjoy the beautifully historic homes around you. There are a number of public parks along the nearby Detroit river, and the neighborhood is riddled with hidden canals and small single block islands with homes on them. Rai, an occasional tenant here (and the daughter part of this team), is working on becoming a flight attendant, loves to dance and practice yoga, and is very involved in the revitalization efforts happening here in Detroit. She lives nearby and will meet you here to help get you checked in to Mama’s Place. We here at Mama’s Place want you to kick back and relax in this fully furnished, vintage home. We are family friendly here and hope to have you as a part of ours soon. ~Come make some memories and Enjoy Detroit!

We love to meet new people and learn about cultures and cuisines from around the world. :) The NeighborhoodLOCATION The home is conveniently located 5.5 miles east of downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike).
