The SpaceOur home is on a quiet meadow near the forest. I built this house myself about 12 years ago. It is a good place to get away and connect with nature. High south facing clerestory windows fill the house with natural light, and it is a 15 minute walk to the ocean bluff and access to beaches with tide pools to explore, and opportunities to view harbor seals and migrating whales. The house comes with guest passes to Sea Ranch community swimming pool, sauna, and tennis courts. This space was made for a family of 3 and we have 2 beds - one queen and one double. Lots of games and puzzles are available. There is a washer, dryer, satellite TV, and kitchen appliances. Wifi is available at the community centers - Del Mar Rec Center is the closest. The Sea Ranch Golf course is close by. We would like to meet our guests when they arrive or leave - but it depends on everyone's schedule. Interaction is not necessary if guests prefer privacy. Around the house, there are miles of beautiful trails that will take you through douglas fir and redwood forests, across creeks and bridges, under cypress archways and over waterfalls, and climb up to high breathtaking ocean views and down to beaches and tidepools. Nature is spectacular here - the tranquil setting is excellent for birdwatchers and all nature enthusiasts. We have seen within walking distance of our house wild rabbits, quail families, foxes and their kits, deer and their spotted fawns, osprey carrying fish, and many other animals. The Sea Ranch Chapel (Please see it on the internet if you aren't familiar) is a little over an hour hike. The town of Gualala is only a 5 minute drive away. The local supermarket has fresh produce from many excellent local farms, Trinks cafe has terrific food and coffee, and there are art galleries, boutiques, and a book store to while away the afternoon in town. The Gualala Arts Center is the center of local festivals and plays/musicals. There are also relaxing spas with all different types of massages offered. Just outside of Gualala is St. Orres. Within the beautiful Russian structures and stained glass windows is a large fireplace, excellent cuisine and service as listed in Zagat, and a perfect place for a romantic meal with a full view of the ocean. Within Sea Ranch, Two Fish bakery offers artisanal foods and amazing baked goods, and the nearby Annapolis Winery is a great place to do some (free) wine tasting on the Sonoma coast - their port is not to be missed. Local sports include kayaking, hiking and biking, fishing, and diving. Farther north, Mendocino is 1.25 hrs away from Sea Ranch and an easy trip for a full day of exploration. We are on route 95 of the MTA - Mendicino Transit Authority. Public transit service is limited, a car is the best way to go. We do have satellite TV, but do not have internet or wifi. There is a phone in the house, and there is Verizon cell phone service -our cell phones work OK for calls but only pick up Verizon 3G service occasionally. Please note that listed price includes our local 9% transient tax. Please no pets as I am allergic. Please no young children under age 10. The SpaceThis cute little cob cottage was designed and built entirely by students of Sundog School of Natural Building during the 2014 summer season. It features a little wood fired Rocket Mass Heater for heating, 12 volt off-grid electricity with USB and automotive outlets and views of the redwood forest. Guest AccessGuests will have access to seasonal garden including fruit trees which provide (depending on the season) summer lettuces and winter greens, plums, peaches, pears, apples and figs. AMENITIES ARE RUSTIC, including access to an outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen and outdoor composting toilet. (composting toilets are like outhouses, but less objectionable) The site is within 10 minuets drive to the towns of Gualala or Anchor Bay and 20 minuets to Point Arena. Cell phone reception for Verizon customers is spotty at best, non-existant for most others. There is limited (very slow) wifi/internet access, in the kitchen area. Interaction with GuestsWe will be glad to meet you when you arrive, check you in, give tours of the other earthen buildings, of the garden and orient you to the facilities. If we know ahead, the time of your arrival, we can start the stove and warm the space for you. When in the mood we can be quite talkative and may invite you to join us, cooking in the outdoor kitchen, working at the forge or in the garden. More often, we are very private people and will leave you to your own devices. Be aware that between the months of May and August, we teach workshops here on the land. There may be MANY people camping and using the facilities, depending on the date. If you are looking for a private getaway between these months, this may not be ideal for you. The quiet season here comes starting October and lasts until the following May. If on the other hand, the idea of meeting new people and learning new things excites you, this may be the ideal time to join us for the weekend. The NeighborhoodThe setting is a secluded area, quietly nestled into a mixed species, Redwood forest. We are located off of a popular alternate bike route, between Gualala and Point Arena. This is a quiet place, immersed in nature, no streetlights, no noise other than forest animals, the wind and on ocassion, the sound of storm whipped waves crashing on rocks and/or far off seal lions. Getting AroundYou will need a car. There is a bus route into Gualala/Point Arena, you would need to arrange with us for pick-up/drop off to and from the bus stop. We are about a 3-4 hour drive from the SF and Oakland Airports, depending on traffic. Please use the driving directions provided here, as online and GPS maps tend to give poor results. Other Things to NoteBe careful driving on our dirt road, the surface is rough and a little pot-holed. If you drive too fast, it MAY damage your car and it WILL upset the neighbors. It gets better down at the end (as long as you don't drive past), so don't despair.
