The Space(URL HIDDEN) SAN GALLO is a truly beautiful and comfortable farm cottage within the outstanding historic property called BERGAMO HOUSE. It is nestled amongst vineyard, olive- and chestnut grove, century-old trees and garden. Noted as a key property of the first substantial agricultural settlement of Italians in Australia, BERGAMO HOUSE dates from the mid-19th century. The surrounding landscape is hilly with a lovely mix of vineyards, pastures and bushland, totally tranquil and reminiscent architecturally and scenically of the ancient farmlands of northern Italy. An extensive network of undisturbed country lanes, many of them sealed, and old bush tracks invite to hike and bike, whether to explore the northern fringes of the Wombat Sate Forest or the many remnants of the districts rich history. All surrounding country towns like Daylesford, Castlemaine, Maldon, Clunes, Talbot and many more are of particular interest and easily accessible, each being only an easy 15 to 30 minutes drive away. Need a getaway, need a break from city noise and traffic. Look no further than Forty Acres Shed. It is basic. Concrete floors and unlined walls. It does however have character and you need not worry about breaking anything or making a mess. On the plus, its set amongst Australian bush with abundant stars and outdoor fire pit. A quaint solar powered shed located about 100m from the main farm house, the shed is totally self sufficient. It has a double bed, large lounge suite with sofa bed, small kitchenette, fridge, gas cooker, bathroom with tub and separate toilet. Outside you have your own patio, outdoor table and chairs and BBQ. I must reinforce here that the shed is just that a shed. Whilst it has and continues to be refurbished you need to realise its basic living. In winter you'll be super warm using the coonara fireplace, in summer it could get a little warm, although fans are available. But if its all too hot in summer take a dip in the dam to cool off. The advantage of the shed being basic living, you and your family can enjoy it for what it is, need not fear dirtying any carpets or breaking things.Linen and towels are provided, as are kitchen utensils. The area is historically rich in gold mining during the boom days of the late 1800s. Now predominantly a farming area of sheep and crops like lucerne depending on the season you could see fields with loads of lambs or yellow canola for as far as the eye can see. Local markets operate every Saturday or Sunday and then larger community markets work on a rotating roster. At Forty Acres you are sure to see a kangaroo or black wallaby at sunrise or sunset. While with us you can collect eggs, pick in season fruit, meet Gus the pet sheep and Peachie the pup. In summer time you can cool off with a dip in the dam, and in winter light the indoor and outdoor fireplaces.

The SpaceThis recently restored historical building was once a Blacksmiths shop forming part of the heritage listed buildings of the former Gervasoni Homestead. The original stone building is now a large bedroom which includes a queen size bed, wardrobe, dressing table and bedside table and small table and chairs. A portable cot is available upon request. The new addition sitting room includes a sofa-bed couch (suitable for 1 adult at a squeeze, but is more suited to kids as it works better in the small space to sleep on the couch rather than pulling out the sofa-bed). There is a TV and DVD, bean bag, coffee table and magazines for your relaxation and enjoyment. The bathroom includes a bath with shower over the top. Toilet and vanity. The cupboard includes a mini-fridge, toaster, kettle and tea & coffee making facilities. Bedding and towels are provided. The rear courtyard space opens off the sitting room. A secure (and awesome) playground is accessible from the car parking space and is directly behind the courtyard. Guest AccessYou have full access to the Blacksmiths Villa and shared access to the playground and stables BBQ area. You are very cosy in cold weather with electric blanket on the bed and bar heater... The small pot belly stove only for looks due to building fire regulations. Interaction with GuestsWe are generally on site in an adjacent building during your stay. The NeighborhoodOur buildings are part of the rich Swiss Italian heritage of this area. These historical buildings were constructed during the gold rush era and produce from the picturesque surrounding land was sold to miners. Getting AroundThe closest town to us is Newstead (10 minute drive)which has a great restaurant / café "Dig", a general store / bakery, two pubs and takeaway food. An artspace, playgrounds and the Loddon River make Newstead a very lovely little town. Guildford is also close by (12 minute drive) and has a great general store / and pub. Bigger towns are either Castlemaine (25 minutes north) or Hepburn and Daylesford (20 minutes in the opposite direction). Both great to explore with lots of interesting things to see and do along the way. We highly recommend the Daylesford market on a Sunday morning. Other Things to NoteThe tiny pot belly stove in the Blacksmiths Villa is not functional (just for looks - it must not be lit). The SpaceThis is a one-off, very special place. Dating back to 1864 and constructed of beautiful local stone, it's not at all modernised. There are two double bedrooms, both with slat-style beds, and a foldout couch in the living room. The house is often used by writers and other creative types. We have lots of books to read, records to play, and there's a hammock you can sling under the back verandah. The garden area is not landscaped; it's a mix of open grass, native trees, a slightly neglected vegie garden and a number of pretty fruit trees. Come here to relax, sleep, sit in front of the fire; if you must go out, it's a ten minute drive to Castlemaine and twenty minutes to Daylesford, both of which have great markets, shops, restaurants and cultural events. It's priced to reflect its unrenovated condition and the need for you to be fairly self-sufficient; this is a house where you can unwind and be at peace. Guest AccessAccess to the whole property, including half an acre of fenced land. Interaction with GuestsWe don't live nearby but are usually available to advise by phone. We provide full written instructions on how to "drive" the house before you go and urge you to read that carefully in advance. There are various local guides and maps at the house. Checkin is via a keysafe. The NeighborhoodThe house is in a rural area; there are a couple of houses nearby but not directly overlooking the house, so you can feel alone but not isolated. A short drive to Castlemaine, a little more to Daylesford, and the Goldfields National Park is on your doorstep. The nearest shop is a 3 minute drive/10 minute bike ride away. When we're there, we do a lot of walking up bush roads... Getting AroundIt's possible to get to the house by train to Castlemaine and then taxi and then use the bike provided to go to the shop 15 mins away, but it's best to have a car. Other Things to NoteThis is a private weekender as well as being available to rent; sometimes we and/or friends are there but it's not shown on the calendar, so we do require contact before booking, and really prefer at least three days' notice. It's also not a traditional b&b; we aren't nearby and suggest that you only book if you are fine with very simple tasks like turning the gas on and off, making up your beds, getting the fire going etc. We don't have a cleaner (or cleaning fee), just a local who checks the place before and after you go, so we do ask that you leave it as clean as you found it (vacuum, cleaning cloths etc are provided of course). There's a bike on site which you are welcome to use. Portacot also provided. NB: We do not provide linen; you MUST bring your own sheets, towels etc, as well as food. The cooking facilities are basic (see photos) but adequate to whip up a curry or make your porridge on a cold winter morning. There is a landline but no internet, and you may find mobile coverage sometimes drops out. There is a TV but no reception; we have DVDs and videos (and a radio and record player) A portacot is available.
